The Warblers by Birds Canada

Should we feed birds? When and why? These are some of the questions we explore with Kerrie Wilcox, Birds Canada's bird feeding expert. With decades of experience leading Project FeederWatch, Kerrie explains the value of observing the birds in your yard and what the data tells us about bird population trends. And what watching ‘our' birds contributes to our own well-being.We'll also talk to experts to answer some of the amazing questions listeners submitted. Together, we learn why some birds change colour, why birds have different flight styles, different types of nests and what is the most diverse family of birds.Kerrie Wilcox manages Project FeederWatch in Canada, a program that turns people's bird feeding hobby into research for conservation. Participants feed birds in their backyards and send counts of those birds to us online. She loves feeling the enthusiasm and commitment of the volunteers. On this episode we talk to Jacquie Taylor and Brielle Reidlinger who are with the Cowichan Bring Back the Bluebirds Project. This amazing organization is working to reintroduce Western Bluebirds which disappeared from southern Vancouver Island in the late 1990's due to habitat loss and out-competition by invasive cavity-nesting species such as the house sparrow.   Cowichan Bring Back the Bluebirds Project links   https://cowichanbluebird.wordpress.com/   https://www.facebook.com/CowichanValleyBluebird/   https://www.instagram.com/cowichan_valley_bluebirds/   https://cowichanbluebird.wordpress.com/contact/     Also, the RPBO Fall Migration Project is now underway after uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic and there have been a few surprises so far after the first week of operations.    To purchase the 36 bird Art Cards you can do so at  http://rpbo.org/art_bird_cards.php   To find out more about the Rocky Point Bird Observatory visit rpbo.org   Please be sure to visit and follow us on the Bird Babble Podcast Facebook Page or on Bird Babble Instagram .   If you have any questions or comments, they can be sent to us at birdbabblerpbo@gmail.com   Music for this Bird Babble episode is provided with thanks by Purple Planet and their website can be found at purple-planet.com

Musician Kate Voss joins today with guest host Jasmine Silvera filling in for Manny. Silas and Jasmine talk to Kate about her musical journey and what lead her to be selected as the winner of the NW Jazz Vocalist of the Year by Earshot Magazine.  She also discusses her primary performances with Sundae + Mr. Goessl, her Duo Specialty jazz act. About Our Guest Kate Voss has been a bubbling volcano her entire life. And she’s about to blow you away. She received Special Mention at the Seattle-Kobe Jazz Vocal Queen contest in both 2014 and 2016. After being nominated 2 years in a row, in 2016 she received the esteemed NW Vocalist of the Year Award from Earshot Magazine. (http://www.earshot.org/) For the past 15 years, Seattle has been her home and she’s been politely leaving her mark in artsy corners and creative hubs all over this city. In the early days, her art took form as an actress, director, playwright, songwriter and piano instructor. Seamlessly moving into the music scene with indie bands such as Argo (http://www.argotheband.com/) and A Breakthrough in Field Studies (https://abreakthroughinfieldstudies.bandcamp.com/) to weirdo pop like Mannequin BBQ (http://parlourtrick.com/artists/mannequinbbq/) and The Stevedore (https://www.facebook.com/thestevedore/) to western swing with the Western Bluebirds (https://www.facebook.com/westernbluebirds/) and a complicated relationship with old/alt country, (Check out Collapsible Rodeo (https://www.facebook.com/Collapsible-Rodeo-1675325039411479/) featuring sweet sister harmonies) Voss has done it all. And her favorite is a four letter word in this city: jazz. Kate puts the term (and genre) in perspective with such projects as Sundae + Mr. Goessl (http://sundaeandmrgoessl.com/) and Kate Voss & The Big Boss Band. (Sundae + Mr. Goessl being her vintage-inspired nationally touring duo with husband and guitarist Jason Goessl. )
