117 - Good Deal or Bad Strategy? The Right Way to Use Loss Leaders

Sports Marketing Machine Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2025 11:53

Send us a textIn this episode of The Sports Marketing Machine Podcast, host Jeremy Neisser breaks down one of the most misunderstood tactics in sports marketing: the loss leader. While promotions like $1 hot dogs or “Kids Eat Free” nights can pack the stands and drive in-game revenue, not every deal is a good deal. Jeremy explains how smart promotions protect perceived value, generate buzz, and increase total spend — while bad ones can erode your brand and season ticket strategy. Learn which deals drive revenue, which ones backfire, and how to craft promotions that make fans feel like they scored — without your team taking a loss.✅ Top TakeawaysNot Every Deal Is a Good Deal: Free or steeply discounted offers can do more harm than good.Loss Leaders Should Drive Spend: The goal isn't cheap tickets — it's getting fans in the door to spend more.Perception Is Everything: A $1 hot dog feels like a steal; a free ticket feels like a handout.Avoid Undermining Value: Don't train fans to wait for discounts — protect your full-price strategy.Use Promotions to Increase Per Cap: Target food, drink, and merchandise add-ons that drive incremental revenue.Track the Right Metrics: Redemption rates and per-cap spending are your best indicators of success.Smart Bundles Win: Pair tickets with value-added incentives (not price cuts) to boost attendance and loyalty.

How a Mistake in Confronting Workplace Discrimination Shaped a Leadership Career – Karin Hurt on Speaking Up the Right Way

My Favorite Mistake

My guest for Episode #311 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Karin Hurt, CEO of Let's Grow Leaders, a global leadership development firm. Karin is a former Verizon Wireless executive and the award-winning author of five books, including her latest, Powerful Phrases for Dealing with Workplace Conflict. Episode page with video, transcript, and more In this episode, she shares a deeply personal and professionally pivotal story from her corporate days—an impassioned confrontation over a discriminatory hiring decision that, while well-intentioned, caused serious damage to her career. Karin unpacks how her emotional reaction—rooted in a strong sense of justice—ultimately undermined her goal. Despite advocating successfully for her team member, her public and heated delivery hurt her leadership reputation. She reflects on the importance of staying calm under pressure, choosing the right time and place to speak up, and communicating with both courage and strategy. These lessons became the foundation for the work she does today, helping leaders navigate difficult conversations with confidence and compassion. Throughout the episode, we also discuss her transition from corporate executive to keynote speaker, author, and entrepreneur. Karin explains how she and her co-author (and husband), David Dye, help teams build cultures of “productive conflict,” where differences lead to innovation rather than division. From real-world mistakes to powerful communication tools, this episode is full of insight for leaders who want to lead with heart—and get results. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake, and what did you learn from it? Do you think the hiring manager eventually saw the light, or was the outcome driven by HR? Did that incident influence your decision to leave the corporate world and start your own company? How did your background in HR and operations shape your leadership approach? When did you realize you had something valuable to share publicly through your blog? How did your speaking career take off, and what was the turning point? How do you stay calm in conflict now, compared to earlier in your career? What are the four dimensions of productive conflict? How often do leaders get in trouble for what they say versus staying silent? How do you advise someone to say “no” to their boss without hurting their reputation? What are the dynamics of working with your husband as a business partner? How can teams embrace conflict as a source of innovation, not dysfunction? What's the danger of trying to fix systemic conflict at the interpersonal level? How do you handle conflict on hybrid or global teams where trust is harder to build? Is it easier to de-escalate conflict in person versus virtual or text-based communication? How do you balance encouraging courage with creating psychological safety?

Filing for Bankruptcy the Right Way with Ashley Morgan

Ashley Morgan is here to share on filing for bankruptcy the right way. There has been a rising demand for bankruptcy services amid job losses and contracting challenges in the D.C. area, particularly among government contractors, and Ashley's VA based Law Practice has been doing a lot of work on these cases for both individuals and businesses. Ashley explains how bankruptcy can offer a fresh start, protect certain assets like homes or retirement accounts, and in some cases discharge tax and SBA debt. The conversation also covers the complexity of student loan discharge, the importance of asset protection and planning before filing, and misconceptions around credit damage post-bankruptcy.  We discuss...  Ashley Morgan, a bankruptcy attorney near D.C., discussed the rising demand for her services amid increasing job losses, particularly among government contractors. The economic slowdown in the D.C. area is creating a trickle-down effect, impacting local small businesses as stable government money dries up. Bankruptcy is a legal, court-supervised process to eliminate or restructure debt, offering individuals a fresh financial start. The U.S. system allows broader bankruptcy relief compared to many other countries, though outcomes depend heavily on income, assets, and debt type. Common types of bankruptcy include Chapter 7 (liquidation), Chapter 13 (repayment plan), Chapter 11 (business restructuring), and Chapter 12 (for farmers/fishermen). Chapter 11 is often used by large businesses to renegotiate leases, restructure payments, or close unprofitable locations. Small business owners can file Chapter 7 to shut down a business, but Chapter 11 can be cost-prohibitive for many. Personal credit isn't always impacted by business bankruptcy unless the owner personally guaranteed business debt. Bankruptcy doesn't automatically ruin credit—many filers see credit scores rebound shortly after filing. Asset protection during bankruptcy varies by state; homestead exemptions can protect homes, but limits differ widely. Timing and transparency are critical—transferring assets before filing may trigger fraudulent conveyance issues. Retirement accounts (e.g., 401(k)s, IRAs) are often protected and can be used strategically before filing. Student loans are generally not dischargeable, though rare exceptions exist through adversary proceedings under "undue hardship." SBA and certain tax debts may be dischargeable under specific conditions, like being sufficiently old and properly filed. Ashley emphasizes the importance of early education, legal consultation, and realistic expectations about outcomes when considering bankruptcy. Sean Lake, Founder of BUBS Naturals, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 740, to share how collagen supplementation transformed his own healing process, allowing him to maintain a life of adventure in his 50s, why only a fraction of supplement companies genuinely care about helping you heal, and how collagen helps with connective tissue repair and alleviating joint pain. "After you're in your early mid-20s, you lose 1 to 2% of the collagen in your body every year. So when you turn 55, you're at half. All of your connective tissue support is fed by the exogenous intake of collagen peptides, and it fuels that collagen production inside the human body." - Sean Lake 20% Off BUBS Naturals' Collagen Peptides Using BUBS' Collagen supports your body and enhances overall wellness from the inside out. BUBS Collagen Peptides start out as grass-fed bovine collagen and are then turned into collagen peptides through a controlled enzymatic hydrolysis process. And that collagen protein in your body is going to help with your hair, skin and nails. But more importantly, it will improve your muscle recovery, joint health, and intestinal health." - Sean Lake Show Your Children The Right Path "I'm hell bent on taking care of myself physically, mentally, spiritually, as much as humanly possible, learning as much as I can, because I want to be as present as possible so that I can give all that up to be there for my children. So that it's not about me, it's about them. What am I bringing to the table to help shape them, to help steer them, to help show them the path? They have to walk it, but I want to show them the right path." - Sean Lake Can You Get Enough Collagen From Your Diet? "Ground beef and bone broth are an amazing way to get gelatin collagen in the body. But what you don't realize is how much you'd have to eat. For most bodies, 20 grams is the baseline. But to get 20 grams from nature, you'd have to be eating a lot of ground beef or bone broth. And our lifestyles don't really allow us to do that and then there's also a digestive cost." - Sean Lake Links From Today's Show  Sean Lake BUBS Naturals - 20% off with code JOSH20 357 Robb Wolf | Sacred Cow: The Case for (Better) Meat The Collagen Synthesis Response to an Acute Bout of Resistance Exercise Is Greater when Ingesting 30 g Hydrolyzed Collagen Compared with 15 g and 0 g in Resistance-Trained Young Men 216 Exploring The Shadow Self For Healing: George Bryant 629 Paul Chek | Spirit Gym: How To Find The Truth of Your Soul + Live Your Dream 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) The Queen's Code by Alison Armstrong Driven by Dr. Doug Brackmann + Randy Kelley Thomas DeLauer Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products Biohacking MANNA Vitality - Save 20% with code JOSH20 HigherDOSE - 15% off with the code JOSH15 PLUNGE - $150 off with discount code WELLNESSFORCE Pulsetto - Save 20% with code "JOSH" SaunaSpace - 10% off with discount code JOSH10 Ultrahuman Ring Air - 10% off with code JOSH NutriSense - 30% off with WELLNESSFORCE Wellness Test Kits Choose Joi - Save 50% on all Lab Tests with JOSH Blokes - Save 50% on all Lab Tests with JOSH FertilityWize Test by Clockwize - Save 10% with code JOSH Tiny Health Gut Tests - $20 off with discount code JOSH20 VIVOO Health Tests - Save 30% off with code JOSH SiPhox Health Blood Test - Save 15% off with code JOSH Nutrition + Gut Health Organifi - 20% off with discount code WELLNESSFORCE SEED Synbiotic - 25% off with the code 25JOSHTRENT Paleovalley -  Save 15% off here! “Am I doing this wrong?” The question haunts so many of us on our grief journey. We look around at other widows, compare our progress to arbitrary timelines, and wonder if our unique experience somehow means we're failing at grief.   In this episode, I tackle the common fear that there's a "right way" to grieve and explain where this anxiety actually comes from.    Join me this week as I explore the pressure to grieve according to societal expectations, the common fears of grieving “wrong” or not doing enough, and questions to ask yourself instead of focusing on whether you're grieving correctly.   Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://www.coachingwithkrista.com/311

In today's market, many investors are finding it harder than ever to uncover strong, reliable returns. That's why more high-net-worth individuals are becoming the bank—earning double-digit yields by making short-term, real estate-backed hard money loans. But there's a right way and a wrong way to do this. My guest today, Fred SaintAmour, has closed over 200 hard money loans through his company, Boathouse Commercial Funding Group, and built a system that balances risk and reward through conservative underwriting and solid borrower vetting. If you're curious how hard money lending works—and how to do it safely—this episode is for you. Get ready for some serious light bulb moments in this episode as I share a live coaching session from one of our MACROS 101 calls with Anna. If tracking your food has ever felt overwhelming, frustrating, or like a constant test of perfection, you're going to relate to this one. Anna came into our conversation feeling stuck—swinging between obsessively tracking every gram and giving up altogether when she couldn't be perfect. Together, we unpacked her resistance and reframed tracking as a tool for learning, not a test to pass or fail. You'll hear the exact questions I asked that helped shift her mindset and reveal how powerful a simple perspective change can be. Tracking isn't about control—it's about understanding. And when you approach it with curiosity instead of judgment, that's where the real freedom begins.
