Patient financing has become increasingly popular in medical aesthetics, especially during economic slowdowns and seasonal dips in demand. The problem is that many practices treat financing as a solution to slow sales when it should be treated as a financial tool. In this episode, I talk about where financing fits into a healthy med spa growth strategy, when it makes sense to offer financing options, and how to avoid the margin erosion that often comes with poorly structured financing programs. Financing Should Support Value—Not Replace It One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the belief that financing creates demand. However, offering payment plans won't solve the underlying problem of a potential patient misunderstanding the value of or not seeing the value in a treatment. Financing works best when the value proposition is already clear and the patient simply needs more flexibility around affordability. When teams lead with financing too early, they often skip the more important conversation around outcomes, results, and treatment benefits. Over time, that can weaken pricing power and train patients to focus on monthly payments instead of value. The Right Way to Offer Financing in Your Med Spa Financing can be a useful tool when it's applied selectively and supported by clear policies. • Reserve financing options for high-ticket services with healthy margins • Set minimum spend thresholds before financing becomes available • Use financing for treatments like body contouring, laser packages, hair restoration, skin tightening, and surgery financing • Avoid financing low-ticket services or already discounted treatments • Understand financing fees and how they impact practice margins • Train staff to sell value first and financing second • Monitor financing usage as part of regular executive financial reviews The goal is to use financing to accelerate a demand that already exists—not to compensate for weak sales strategy or pricing issues. Protecting Margins While Improving Affordability Every financing option comes with a cost. Depending on the provider, financing fees can significantly reduce profitability, especially on treatments with tighter margins. Before implementing a financing policy, understand exactly how those fees affect cash flow, treatment profitability, and overall financial performance. If financing is reducing margins more than it's increasing revenue, it's working against the business. As Your Practice Grows, Financing Offers Require Clear Boundaries The most successful practices use financing selectively. They understand which services can support financing costs, train their teams consistently, and monitor financing usage as part of regular financial reviews. When financing is aligned with profitability goals, it can improve affordability and support growth. When it becomes the default answer to every price objection, it often creates more financial and operational challenges than it solves. You ever sit at a Chaldean/Assyrian funeral gathering and feel like something about it just doesn't sit right, even though everybody's there for a good reason? We get into what actually happens in those halls — the way the room splits, the "hired" wailers doing their thing to get people crying, and how the men usually end up talking business or church stuff while the women are on the other side. We discuss the pressure that falls on the women especially, the black clothes, the 40 days, the skipping weddings and celebrations, and how that can turn into something heavier than anyone meant it to be. We also call out the part that's harder to say out loud: how mourning can quietly become a competition, or how family drama and judgment show up right when people are already hurting. And the question that keeps coming back is the one that matters most — where is Jesus in the middle of all of it? If you've ever left one of these and felt like the traditions were running the show more than the actual grief or the faith, this conversation is gonna feel familiar. Featuring: Fr. Christopher Somo, Fr. Andy Younan, Abbot Ankido Sipo, Fr. Daniel Shaba –––

If 82% of people lack a time management system and the average worker spends half their day on low-value tasks, what's the real cost of doing nothing about it? In this episode, Brandon Laws sits down with bestselling author Peter Economy, who has written over 140 books, to dig into his latest release, Wait, You Need a Win? The Essential Guide to Time Management, Productivity, and Powerful Habits That Get Things Done. From the neuroscience behind habit formation to the Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand framework, Peter shares practical, immediately actionable strategies for anyone who has ever ended the day wondering where the time went. If you've been meaning to get more intentional about how you work and live, this conversation is your sign. Key Timestamps: [00:01] Welcome Back, Peter Economy Brandon introduces return guest Peter Economy and his latest book on time management and productivity. [00:54] Why 82% of People Still Don't Have a System Peter explains why most people avoid time management and how ingrained habits keep us stuck in low-value routines. [02:17] The Real Cost of Poor Time Management Research shows the average employee loses about 500 hours per year to unproductive work. Peter breaks down what that means for individuals, teams, and organizations. [03:24] Phones, Interruptions, and the 23-Minute Rule The average person picks up their phone 96 times a day, and a single interruption costs over 23 minutes of refocus time. The numbers are hard to argue with. [07:03] The Paradox of Time We think we have all the time in the world. Peter explains why that illusion is one of the biggest obstacles to getting anything meaningful done. [08:26] Working from Home Like You Mean It Remote and hybrid workers face a unique challenge: the people around them don't always see them as "really working." Peter shares how to establish non-negotiable work boundaries at home. [10:50] Designing Habits Using Neuroscience New habits mean new brain pathways. Peter walks through how to intentionally build routines that actually stick, starting small and building over time. [13:18] The Right Way to Use a To-Do List More tasks do not mean more productivity. Peter makes the case for limiting your daily list to three to five high-priority goals and why that constraint is a feature, not a limitation. [16:03] David Allen's Getting Things Done Framework Peter explains the five-step GTD methodology (capture, clarify, organize, reflect, engage) and why it remains one of the most effective systems for managing commitments. [17:46] Why "No" Is a Time Management Strategy People-pleasing has deep roots, and learning to say no is harder than it sounds. Peter shares how taking on one too many projects changed his approach for good. [21:21] Protecting Your Calendar from Meetings You Don't Need Research suggests around 76% of meetings are ineffective. Peter offers a framework for protecting your time by declining meetings that don't warrant your presence. [23:05] The Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand Framework One of the most visual concepts in the book: why tackling your biggest priorities first is the only way to make sure they actually get done. [25:14] Rest as a Productivity Tool Powering through is overrated. Peter makes the case for taking real breaks, getting outside, and prioritizing sleep as essential parts of a high-performance routine. [27:17] Using AI to Save Time From Otter AI for meeting transcription and action items to organizing project files in Claude, Peter and Brandon trade practical tips for using AI tools to reclaim hours in your week. [31:01] Is It Your System, or Is It Your Work? Peter closes with the most important question: if you're chronically unproductive, the problem might not be your framework. It might be that you're not doing work you actually care about. Bobbi Powell: Beauty School, Haven House, and Building Something Nobody Asked ForShe cold emailed a press team, showed up with no connections, and built something the industry didn't know it needed.Recorded live at ABS Chicago with co-host Geno Chapman, Corey sits down with Bobbi Powell (@beautyschoolbobbi) for a conversation that covers beauty school ownership, community service, self-advocacy, and what it actually means to show up for people. Bobbi is co-owner of Tennessee School of Beauty, a fifth generation school opened in 1934, and has been partners with the family for seven years after walking in to do admissions and operating like she already owned it.How She Got HereBobbi grew up near Pittsburgh in a close-knit Italian family and almost became a high school English teacher. After one semester of observations in inner city Akron middle schools she knew it was not the path. She followed her mom to Knoxville, connected with a salon owner tied to Tennessee School of Beauty, and took the admissions job with zero beauty industry experience. She fell in love immediately. Seven years later the fourth generation owner made her a partner.Own the Space You Are InBobbi did not wait for permission to build something at ABS. She emailed the press team cold, showed up with a small crew, and asked if they could have a bigger presence the following year. That became what it is today. Own every space you are in regardless of whose name is on the door. Whether you are behind the chair on commission or running a media operation at a hair show, treat it like yours.Haven HouseBobbi partners with Haven House, an organization that supports girls in foster care who have experienced sex trafficking. Multiple times a year those girls come into the school as clients. Students work on them. Bobbi handpicks which students are in the room because she knows who needs to be there. Every time without fail those students walk out changed. The girls get to be normal teenage girls for a day. The students get a perspective shift that no classroom can manufacture. The Tennessee Beauty Professional Awards and a New NonprofitThe Tennessee Beauty Professional Awards happen August 16th in Knoxville. The first year benefited the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network with a scholarship in honor of her business partner's son who died by suicide. This year Bobbi is announcing a new nonprofit to fund real product and hands-on training in underfunded public school cosmetology programs. Corey is going to be a judge.Find Bobbi at @beautyschoolbobbi on all platforms. Listen to the Beauty School Bobbi podcast every Monday. Follow Geno at @genochapman.

What Is an Education Anyway — And Who Gets to Decide? Forget every notion you have been told about what an education is. I want to ask you something I ask every single woman I work with in coaching. What do you believe an education is? And the second question — the one that tends to stop people cold: What did you believe an education was before you started homeschooling? Most of us never actually chose our definition of education. We absorbed it. From school, from our parents, from the culture around us. And then we built an entire homeschool on top of it. And then we wondered why it felt so heavy. And if you’re just starting out and wondering where to begin — I made something for exactly that. The 7-Day Confident Homeschool Roadmap is a free guide that walks you through your first year with clarity rather than overwhelm. Grab it below. Get your free 7-Day Confident Homeschool Mom Roadmap What Is an Education Anyway? The Definition Most of Us Inherited If you grew up in a conventional school system, your working definition probably sounds something like this: Education is the successful delivery of academic content across subjects. Demonstrated through coverage, completion, and measurable progress. Coverage. Completion. No gaps. Not falling behind. Making sure it’s enough. Sound familiar? That definition is exhausting. And it’s not even working in schools. Teachers leave many pages of their curriculum undone at the end of every year. There are interruptions. Substitute teachers. Sick days. Stops and starts. There is no perfectly covered, hundred-percent-completed, no-gaps education happening in a classroom either. And the very academic kids who were force-fed information and tested weekly? How much of that actually stuck? How much of it translated into a purposeful, meaningful life? It is not possible to create a perfectly covered education. Not in a school. Not in your homeschool. The sooner you stop measuring yourself against that standard, the sooner you can build something that actually works. If this is landing for you and you want to hear me unpack it further — I’m also diving into this on my YouTube channel. Same episode, same conversation. Watch it here → https://youtu.be/1T8pINVSeXc Do You Need a Teaching Degree to Define Your Child’s Education? And if you question whether you have the intelligence to answer that question — don’t be in self-doubt. Of course you do. This is your child. Does it seem daunting? It likely does. But it doesn’t have to. I’ve stopped counting the number of times I’ve been asked if I’m a certified teacher. Nope. I’m not. Does being a certified teacher enable me to educate my children better at home? Nope. It doesn’t. In fact, statistically, being a certified teacher has no bearing on a child’s home education. Teachers have classroom management skills. They know standardized learning materials. They have years of experience that homeschooling parents might not have in the beginning — and I am not denying those skills for a moment. But it doesn’t mean I’m not more motivated to learn how to engage my children’s education than someone else. When I asked a kindergarten teacher about Grade 2 math, she didn’t know what to say. When I asked a high school English teacher how to approach a history discussion with an elementary-aged child, she was stumped too. Turns out, teachers don’t have the full breadth of knowledge either. And I’m certainly not claiming to either. Why do we think we need to? Google doesn’t have it all. Neither does YouTube. But both are pretty helpful. And when they aren’t, there are always books. Lots and lots and LOTS of books. You just need to know where to find the information. A little research and it’s findable. So Where Do You Find What You Need? When I was in junior high, we bought our first computer: a Tandy EX 1000. The only computer training we had was a Logo program that did next to nothing for me. I attempted to wield x’s and o’s. I’m pretty sure they meant something, but I didn’t understand. Some thirty years later, anyone who wants to know how to use a computer knows. Anyone who wants to know how to Google, YouTube, Facebook, Tweet — they figured it out. Why? Because they found out, by themselves. Tada. The human mind is capable of figuring things out because it wants to. P.S. You might wonder how I went about structuring a thirteen-year-old’s academic education. Self-Education: The Heart of What an Education Really Is Why do we assume kids need everything taught to them? We assume something needs to be done to them. Before anyone sat them down and formally taught them anything, they had already learned animals, language, and how to navigate relationships. In their first year. Their second. Their fifth — long before they ever walked through a kindergarten door. Kids want to learn. It’s simply what they do. When we ask the question — what is an education anyway? — we’ve just begun to really consider who our children are and what they need. And that is exactly what Charlotte Mason was pointing to. What Is an Education Anyway? Here’s What Charlotte Mason Said. “Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child’s nature.” — Charlotte Mason I have returned to this quote more times than I can count. Because it points to something we already know intuitively. We keep forgetting it when we sit down at the kitchen table and default to the curriculum, the workbooks, the boxes of books, the online programs everyone else is using. Your job is not to pour information into a vessel. Your job is to raise up the child right in front of you. So what does that actually look like in a real homeschool? Here’s one mom’s answer. What Does Real Home Education Actually Look Like? A mom I worked with had been homeschooling for six years, three kids, and had done a lot of the external work — curriculum, systems, showing up every day. And then she went deeper and found her own answer to the question of what an education really is: “Education is a process of exposure to knowledge while learning involves personal processing and growth. Character traits like discernment, self-confidence, and self-management are important outcomes that continue developing long beyond formal education years.” She also said something that stopped me: “Even if no one was watching or assessing my approach, I would maintain similar objectives and methods.” She has found her own answer — not borrowed from the school system, not borrowed from a curriculum company. Entirely hers. And that is what I want for you. For me, the answer starts in the same place it always has — in wanting to engage my child, teach them when necessary, and capture their little hearts. I am most definitely motivated to do that. And so are you. That’s why you’re here. Want to keep going? This conversation continues on my Rethinking Education YouTube channel. Find it here → https://youtu.be/lkFJglpaoqs What is an education anyway? What Is an Education Anyway? Questions to Sit With This Week As you move through your week, gently ask yourself: What definition of education am I actually operating from right now? Did I choose it — or did I absorb it? Where might I be able to trust what is already working in my child? If no one was watching or assessing my homeschool, would I do anything differently? You don’t need to answer all of it today. Just noticing is already meaningful work. Want to Go Deeper? If this post resonated, the podcast episode What Is an Education Anyway? goes much further — including the five shifts I see happen when a homeschool mom finally loosens the grip of a definition that was never really hers, and what it looks like when peace replaces pressure in a real homeschool home. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. When you’re ready to take the next step, here are three ways I can help: If you’re in your first year — start with the free 7-Day Confident Homeschool Roadmap. It will give you a clear, grounded foundation so you begin with confidence rather than overwhelm. If you’ve been homeschooling for a while and something feels off — take the quiz to identify the real root of your frustration. It’s free and takes five minutes. And if you’re ready for a real reset — book your free Aligned Homeschool Reset session. This is where we get clear on what’s actually going on in your homeschool and your life — and you walk away with a whole lot more peace than you arrived with. Teresa Wiedrick is a certified life coach and graduated homeschool mom who supports homeschool moms in building a life — not just a lesson plan. How much does a banana cost for you? At Trader Joe's they may be 26 cents (maybe a bit more for organic). At Whole Foods they may be around 70 cents. But a banana costs relatively the same amount wherever you go, right? It's a difference of a few cents. Copywriting is a not a banana. And, even if we agree on that, I don't think you're going to like this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast. See, we hear all the time, “I found this pricing guide and it's really helpful!” But what you may not realize is those guides are actually hurting you. It's presented as an easy solution to a complex problem: how much do I charge for an email? Or a homepage? Or an about page? I hate to break it: there's not an easy button for this. These guides are a marketing gimmick to put $$$dollar signs$$$ in your eyes and get you to click or opt-in or buy the program. Ready to hear me out? To understand the rapture, we may need to read the Bible differently than we've been taught. Instead of viewing prophecy through a Western mindset, Scripture points us toward an Israel-centered perspective focused on the return of Jesus and God's promises to His people.

See what the team at The Successful Bookkeeper has on right now → Sammy Mattingly and Fred Ott are back for the finale of their two-part conversation with host Michael Palmer. Where Part 1 covered the leap into bookkeeping entrepreneurship, Part 2 gets into the gritty, practical work of making a young firm sustainable — documenting processes, surviving the first real growth wave, hiring employee number one, and deciding what kind of business they actually want to build. Chapters [00:00] Introduction and Episode Recap [01:18] What Makes This Partnership Work [04:30] Growth Wave Exposes System Gaps [07:00] Hiring the First Employee [09:00] Fixing Onboarding the Right Way [12:00] Joining Pure Bookkeeping and Freedom Gateway [15:30] Walls Hit and Lessons Learned [18:30] Long-Term Vision and the Journey [21:30] The 'How to Make a Few Thousand Dollars' Podcast The Partnership Advantage One of the quieter themes running through this episode is just how much the partnership itself has been a growth tool. Sammy puts it plainly: "Fred is the only one of my friends that I could do this with — and it's mostly down to that accountability piece and the amount of work that each of us is going to put into this." For bookkeepers considering a partner arrangement, this episode is a useful reality check on what makes it work — shared drive, mutual trust, and complementary skill sets — and what makes it hard. When Clients Arrive Faster Than Your Systems The real test of any process is live clients. Sammy and Fred thought their systems were solid after months of heavy networking. Then the referrals started rolling in, and the cracks showed fast. "We quickly realized our systems and our processes are not what we need to be able to support the growth that we have now and that we want in the future," Fred says. Their response was to pull back from networking temporarily, sit down together, and map out standard operating procedures from scratch — building workflows, identifying automation opportunities, and stress-testing everything against real client volume. Onboarding: Break It, Fix It, Repeat Onboarding was the first thing to crack under pressure. Rather than patching it on the fly, Sammy and Fred blocked a Saturday, mapped every pain point, and rebuilt it. When the next wave of clients came through a month later, the process was smooth — but it surfaced a new set of smaller issues. "There's always something rolling onto the pocket of like, okay, here's an issue with our process," Sammy says. "Now we need to set aside time to work together to map out how to fix that and how to implement it." That cycle of deliberate improvement is now a permanent feature of how they run the business. Pure Bookkeeping and the Freedom Gateway Sammy credits early podcast listening for pointing him toward Pure Bookkeeping, and describes the decision to join as straightforward once the need for a real system became obvious. What stood out most was the access to experienced guidance: "Having an hour with Lisa Campbell a week, someone who's done it, who's built a very successful firm — she was great in just helping us learn and develop and how to work on the business." They also appreciated that the system is customizable — their Pure and Pixie setup reflects their firm, not a template. Building Toward Something (Without Telling Everyone What It Is) When Michael asks about the long-term vision, neither Sammy nor Fred throws out a revenue number — and Michael approves. Fred frames it well: "Like we want to grow and do all these things, but ultimately the day-to-day — we want the day-to-day to be enjoyable. We like challenging ourselves, we're curious people, and we like learning." They're also currently working through Traction by Gino Wickman and have launched their own podcast, How to Make a Few Thousand Dollars, which earned an early shoutout from the entrepreneur who inspired the name. Friends since high school, they made the jump from W-2 employment to entrepreneurship together and are now navigating their first year of real scale — with their first employee, a growing client roster, and a podcast of their own. About the hostMichael PalmerMichael Palmer is the host of The Successful Bookkeeper podcast and co-founder of Pure Bookkeeping and The Successful Bookkeeper. He started this work because of his father — a brilliant electrical contractor who worked twice as hard as he should have had to, because nobody on the financial side was in his corner. That gap is what The Successful Bookkeeper exists to close. His view: bookkeepers are the most undervalued force in small business — and every bookkeeper who builds a real business changes two families: theirs, and their clients'.
What if the reason your coaching business feels exhausting… is because it's built the wrong way? In this episode of the Story Engine Podcast, I sit down with Christie Ruffino to unpack how coaches, speakers, and authors can escape the chaos of low-ticket offers, endless content creation, and "shiny object syndrome" — and instead build scalable, high-ticket programs that deliver real results. Christie shares her proven framework for turning your expertise into a profitable, freedom-based business using strategic offers, risk-reversal guarantees, and books as powerful lead-generation tools (not just credibility pieces). You'll also hear her raw journey from overworked single mom grinding through 10+ hour days… to creating a business that supports her lifestyle, her family, and her freedom. If you're ready to stop spinning your wheels and start building something sustainable, this episode will show you how. In This Episode 01:27 – Christie's Background & Mission From publishing expert to helping coaches leverage books for impact and income. 02:21 – Why Most Books Don't Make Money The myth of "build it and they will come" — and why a book alone won't grow your business. 03:45 – The Right Way to Use a Book as a Lead Generator How to position your book as a funnel that attracts ideal high-ticket clients. 05:06 – What High-Ticket Clients Actually Want Why they don't care about reading your book — and what they do want instead. 06:40 – Building a Real High-Ticket Offer The biggest mistake coaches make (starting too small) and how to position yourself as an expert faster. 08:36 – The Power of Guarantees in Coaching Programs How risk-reversal builds trust, improves conversions, and ensures real client results. 10:02 – Screening vs Selling Why the best high-ticket models focus on qualifying clients instead of convincing them. 11:28 – The "Busy & Broke" Entrepreneur Trap Content overload, shiny objects, and why the ascension model leads to burnout. 13:27 – Christie's Unique Framework Risk-reversal offers, done-for-you components, and structured group coaching systems. 16:19 – Done-For-You vs Done-With-You Support How to design offers that maximize results without draining your time. 17:26 – Christie's Breaking Point Working 10–12 hour days as a single mom, overwhelmed and stuck in the hustle cycle. 20:08 – The Emotional Cost of Busyness The hidden guilt and pressure of trying to provide while feeling absent at home. 22:17 – The Turning Point: High-Ticket Transformation Moving from chaos to clarity — and finally building a business that works. 24:32 – Freedom, Travel, and Lifestyle by Design Choosing how to work, where to work, and creating space for life again. 25:15 – Christie's Story, Reframed A powerful narrative transformation illustrating her full journey and impact. 30:19 – Where to Learn More & Final Thoughts Christie shares resources and reflects on the power of storytelling in business.
Dr. Killeen talks about the mental model of inversion and why it can be such a powerful leadership tool. Sometimes it's easier to identify what we want to avoid in our practices before we define what we actually want to build. There's also a hidden trap. If we spend too much time focusing on what we don't want, our thinking can become anchored to problems instead of possibilities. He shares why clarity comes not just from avoiding mistakes, but from intentionally defining the kind of culture, schedule, and practice we truly want to create. Great leadership is not only about staying away from the wrong path. It's about moving confidently toward the right one.
When your homeschool child won't do work, it's rarely just about laziness—it often signals a deeper need for curiosity, connection, and meaningful engagement. If you're a homeschool mom, you've probably said or thought something like: “My kids don't really care about their lessons. They just want to get through it so they can get on their screens.”“I think my daughter only enjoys going to coop because of her friends, not any actual learning.”“He races through his work without engaging—he's just checking boxes.”“There's outright resistance now. I don't know if it's the work or if it's me or if he’s just rebellious.” These situations are very common, not unusual. And the question behind them is universal: how do you help your child become an independent learner who is genuinely curious and engaged—not someone who treats learning like a chore to avoid? If this resonates with you, a great first step is my free Deschool Your Homeschool Checklist, which helps you step back from school-y thinking, reconnect with how your child naturally learns, and create space for curiosity, calm, and connection. Grab your free Deschool Checklist and Help Your Kids Love Learning 5 Reasons Why Your Homeschool Child Won't Do Work Reason 1: When Your Homeschool Child Won’t Do Work — Learning Feels Like a Chore Many children resist because they've learned to associate “learning” with compliance or tedium. They may rush through assignments just to get them done or outright refuse work that doesn't interest them. To be fair, we adults do that too. When someone says, “Hey, you know what would make tax season easier and more satisfying? Take a course on filing your taxes.” Interesting, you think, and clever, that’s exactly what I should do! (No, you don’t think that. You think, naw, thanks, I’ll do what I have to do until next tax season.) Can I hear an amen? ps don’t respond if you actually enjoy doing taxes, ha–it won’t serve my point;) Well, ditto for your kids. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck explains that a fixed mindset develops when children feel their worth is tied to “doing it right.” In these cases, resistance is not a character flaw—it's a protective response. What you can do: Follow your child's curiosity whenever possible. Show them that learning happens everywhere: in the kitchen, in nature, in everyday problem-solving. Reason 2: When Your Homeschool Child Won't Do Work—Check Your Own Motivation First Kids are highly sensitive to the adults around them. If you're scattered, anxious, or uninspired, they pick up on it. Angela Duckworth, author of Grit, notes that parents who raise resilient, motivated children model passion and perseverance in their own lives. And isn’t that what we all want? This homeschool lifestyle isn’t just equipping our kids to do live a purposeful life, it’s offering us that opportunity too! (And I encourage you to take it!) What you can do: Reconnect with your own curiosity and goals. Are you motivated? What gets you up in the morning? Model learning and persistence in ways your child can observe. Show them you're engaged by joining a book club, starting your own business, or simply signing up for a class at the local community college. Show them that you're learning math concept right alongside them (or whatever other topic you find challenging, I chose math because I had to learn it before I taught it

Gene Zannetti sits down with legendary wrestling coaches Ernie Monaco, Jeff Buxton, and Steve Rivera to discuss the biggest forces reshaping wrestling today, including why parents treating coaching as a transactional service undermines everything coaches build, how the club hopping epidemic creates gaps in wrestling IQ instead of linear development, why building champions starts with parents working on themselves first, the difference between coaching a boarding school environment versus a club where parents never fully let go, and why loyalty and long-term relationships are the foundation of every great wrestling career.Timestamps:1:54 - How Ernie saw the club wrestling explosion coming decades ago5:09 - The transfer portal is destroying team culture13:00 - Parents treat coaching as transactional and miss what coaches actually invest22:00 - The European art metaphor: chipping away everything bad until beauty is revealed31:56 - Building a champion starts with parents working on themselves first34:15 - Blair's boarding environment built independence by removing parents from the equation50:05 - Steve letting Sebastian take a year off in 8th grade and never questioning his commitment again1:03:26 - Club hopping creates gaps in wrestling IQ by skipping from page one to page 2001:14:00 - Gratitude as the bookend that puts every match in proper perspective1:53:32 - The magic of coaching is always in the relationship, not the technique2:20:00 - How money entering the sport is eroding the integrity of youth wrestling2:57:00 - Wrestling's evolution: how athletic and physical the sport has become compared to 30 years ago
There is no singular right way to Game Master, we said that for over 200 episodes already and this episode is no different. This episode is however about a Game Mastering Style we call "The Right Way" GMing."The Right Way" is often defined by one singular path forward and the Game Master trying to bring their players to do exactly that... sometimes that can be a good thing, and sometimes its a really bad thing. So how do we make sure we don't fall into the bad pattern? thats what we discuss today and how you can identify the Style, change your game mastering and be more open to player ideas.Check here for all further information:You can find us on the Web under these Links: https://www.doubledm.com/ https://bsky.app/profile/doubledm.bsky.socialhttps://www.instagram.com/doubledmpod/?hl=de https://ko-fi.com/doubledmIf you want to reach out to us via E-Mail use: doubledmpod@gmail.comOur Midroll Music is "Midnight Tale" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Our Outro Music is "Ascending the Vale" Kevin MacLeod (imcompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Hosted on Acast. What if the reason you're not getting faster isn't that you're training too little, but that you're completely skipping the one aerobic zone that delivers the highest return on effort?Zone 2 gets most of the attention in endurance training, but there's another aerobic training zone that could be the missing link between running comfortably and running faster. In this episode, I break down what sub-threshold training is, why so many runners accidentally skip it, and how it can help improve speed, endurance, and efficiency without pushing into all-out hard efforts. I also share the common mistakes that can turn this powerful workout into something completely different, along with practical tips for getting the intensity right so you can start applying it to your own training right away.Key TakeawaysMany runners spend all their time in easy Zone 2 or hard threshold workouts, while ignoring the narrow zone in between that can deliver major aerobic gains. The goal is not to run harder. Staying just below your threshold and controlling your heart rate is what makes sub-threshold training effective.A carefully planned sub-threshold session can improve running efficiency, endurance, and speed, but only when it is introduced gradually and performed consistently.Timestamps[00:17] What You'll Learn[01:06] Shoes I'm Wearing For This Workout[01:27] The Mistake That Runners Make With Sub Threshold[01:49] Why Zone 3/Sub Threshold Matters[03:18] Why Heart Rate Is the Best Metric for Sub Threshold Workouts[03:51] What Happens When Your HR Goes Higher Than Sub Threshold?[04:14] Use This to Improve Your Sub-Threshold Fitness[04:44] How to Actually Do a Sub Threshold Workout the Right Way[06:10] Traps to Avoid When Doing This Workout[07:08] How Long Should This Workout Be[09:46] Why I'm Doing More of These This Year[10:26] Use This to Learn More About Lactate Threshold TrainingLinks & Learnings

Habitat Podcast #388 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Cory Franceus and Matt Zahl! We discuss: Tree tubes are easy, but cages may protect better long-term. Apple trees can struggle when tubes hold leaf debris. Mouse guards help prevent young trees from being girdled. Weak trunks can get damaged after tubes come off. Fruit trees need yearly maintenance, not just planting. Autumn olive can explode fast after sunlight hits the ground. Some autumn olive is worth keeping if it creates bedding. Spring is the time to clean up access and shooting lanes. Food plots help create social activity, not just food. Earlier fall planting may help beat late-summer drought. And So Much More! Most runners are one bad training week away from an injury they never saw coming, and the way they think about shoes, strength, and recovery is probably making that worse. Dr. Drew Short specializes in working with runners at PhysioRoom, and his approach to running injury recovery starts somewhere most people wouldn't expect: months back in an athlete's training log. The culprit behind most injuries isn't a single bad run. It's accumulated load, under-fueling, or a strength gap that quietly grew until something gave out. When the mechanical picture looks clean, Drew digs deeper, sometimes all the way to blood work and nutritional consults. Multiple tendon issues flaring up in different parts of the body at once? That's a systemic story, not a mechanical one. The calf conversation is worth sitting with. Runners stretch it religiously and almost never strengthen it the way running actually demands. The soleus does significant work during each stride, but only when the knee is bent, which is almost never how people train it. A calf that always feels tight is probably asking for load, not length. On the trail running vs. road running question, the differences go deeper than terrain. Strength demands, stability requirements, and pacing strategy all shift in ways that catch road runners off guard when they head onto the trails. And carbon-plated shoes? Both Drew and Dr. Ficks agree they have a place, but earning them matters more than buying them. Quotes "The downside to under-fueling is you're going to hit a brick wall. The downside to over-fueling is maybe a rumbly stomach…I'd rather be on that end of the spectrum." (14:58 | Dr. Drew Short) "You might meet the rep scheme on a calf raise, but whenever you start making it more ballistic and you start using the tendon more, it doesn't like that. The rate of fire is just a lot slower on that side." (25:50 | Dr. Drew Short) "Stiffer tendons or more robust tendons — that's just free energy. If you're able to use that elasticity like a rubber band whenever you hit the ground, that's less that the muscles are having to push off." (33:19 | Dr. Drew Short) "If your calf always feels like it needs to be stretched, honestly, your tendon probably needs some load. You probably do need to be doing some heavy slow resistance through that tendon. Otherwise, you just keep stretching it all day every day." (34:32 | Dr. Drew Short) "If I'm doing a long effort and I can still breathe just through my nose, I know I'm gonna be fine at hour three, hour four." Eli Harwood is a licensed therapist, the creator of Attachment Nerd, and the author of How to Deal with Your (Anxiety, Anger, Self-Doubt, Insecurity, Trauma) So Your Kids Don't Have To. She spent nearly 20 years sitting with families watching parents who desperately wanted better for their children but had no roadmap for how to actually get there. This conversation goes deep into why 50% of us never experienced secure attachment, what that did to our sense of self, and what it actually takes to break the cycle before it passes to the next generation. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why chaos can feel more like home than safety, and why the people who confuse you are often more magnetic than the people who make you feel secure • What happens developmentally when a child grows up in an unpredictable home and how that wound silently shapes every relationship, every breakup, and every parenting moment that follows • The difference between intellectually knowing this work and actually doing it, and why your kids will find every unhealed part of you no matter what This one is for every parent, every soon to be parent, and every adult who is still trying to figure out why love feels so complicated.
