Plant poaching is a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide and it doesn't get the attention it deserves. While the act of poaching plants from the wild ravages species and ecosystems alike, what happens to plants after the poachers have been caught? That is exactly what we are talking about in this episode. Director of Horticulture for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Raj Brown joins us to explore how they ensure that poached cycads, cacti, and other succulents can continue to contribute to plant conservation and education efforts. Manny encouraged listeners to prioritize mastering their expressions and consider it an essential skill for video meetings. Summary Mastering Facial Expressions in Video Calls Manny introduces the episode of the Targeted Lead Generation Podcast, discussing the importance of mastering facial expressions during video calls. Manny encourages listeners to connect with him through his website for further engagement. Mastering Professional Facial Expressions Manny discusses the importance of controlling facial expressions in professional settings, particularly during video meetings, to avoid misunderstandings and maintain credibility. Non-Verbal Cues in Virtual Meetings Manny discussed how facial expressions and body language during video calls can significantly impact team dynamics and the reception of ideas. He highlighted how frowns, eye rolls, smirks, lack of eye contact, and tense expressions can convey skepticism, disapproval, or disbelief, potentially influencing others' perceptions and stifling open dialogue. Manny emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and fostering a collaborative environment, noting that these non-verbal cues can create tension and fear, especially in sensitive discussions like budget constraints or layoffs. Sales Training and Expression Control Manny discussed the importance of controlling facial expressions in meetings to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts. He suggested practicing neutral expressions by watching controversial videos and using mindfulness techniques to stay present during meetings. Manny also advised role-playing with a friend and incorporating deep breathing exercises to manage emotions effectively. Strategic Pauses in Meetings Manny discussed the importance of strategic pauses and managing facial expressions in meetings, emphasizing that while a pause can help control reactions, it can also be manipulated by others. He highlighted the need for emotional intelligence and suggested maintaining a "poker face" to manage responses effectively without hiding emotions. Manny stressed that the goal is to manage expressions for better communication and outlined the importance of having an action plan moving forward. Mastering Facial Expressions in Video Meetings Manny emphasized the importance of mastering facial expressions during video meetings, encouraging listeners to practice with a colleague for mutual feedback and accountability. Chelsea lose 3-2 at home to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, but somehow remain very much alive in the tie. Manny introduced his book "Stop, Listen, and Lead" and outlined the first key to becoming a super listener: being genuinely interested. Enhancing Genuine Listening Skills Manny discussed the importance of genuine interest in listening, drawing from Dale Carnegie's principles. He emphasized that successful listeners are fully present and engaged, using eye contact, nodding, and other positive cues to show genuine interest. Manny encouraged participants to reflect on their own listening habits and suggested a simple exercise to improve their listening skills moving forward. Enhancing Active Listening Techniques Manny shared techniques for improving listening skills, emphasizing the importance of note-taking, maintaining eye contact, and practicing mindfulness during conversations. Active Listening and Personal Reflection Manny discussed the importance of personal reflection and active listening, sharing his experience of transforming his listening skills during Marine Corps boot camp. He emphasized the value of truly hearing others and the impact it can have on relationships and success. Manny also introduced the concept of "being quiet" and using silence effectively in conversations, quoting Albert Hubbard's insight about the significance of understanding silence. Strategic Use of Silence in Sales Manny discussed the importance of allowing silence in sales conversations, explaining that people often talk too soon and miss opportunities by rushing to fill silence. He shared examples of how silence can be used strategically, such as in negotiations and dating scenarios, and emphasized that giving others time to think can lead to better outcomes. Manny noted that many people view silence as taboo, but he suggested that allowing silence can reveal important information and help close deals. Embracing Silence in Conversations Manny discussed the importance of embracing silence in conversations, particularly in sales contexts, to encourage people to share more information. He suggested trying a simple exercise of leaving silence during conversations with a spouse, partner, or friend, and noted that people often fill silence to avoid discomfort. Manny emphasized that allowing silence can lead to richer conversations and provide valuable insights, as people may share more than intended when given the space to reflect. The Power of Silence in Communication Manny discussed the importance of silence in communication, explaining that it can lead to valuable insights and help close deals. He encouraged listeners to practice counting to ten before responding to questions, noting that this often leads to the other person providing information. Manny shared a personal experience where a four-second pause after a pitch led to a client discussing financial data, demonstrating the power of silence in gathering information. Embracing Silence in Communication Manny discussed the importance of embracing silence in communication, explaining that it can lead to better learning and business outcomes. He shared personal experiences where clients unexpectedly made decisions during silent moments. Manny encouraged listeners to practice remaining quiet during conversations, documenting their experiences and noting any feelings of anxiety. He emphasized that patience is key and that often, valuable information follows periods of silence. Silence as a Sales Strategy Jessica, a seasoned sales representative, faced a challenge during a meeting with a potential client, David, who was hesitant about upgrading their CRM system due to cost and implementation concerns. Despite feeling the pressure to fill the silence, Jessica recalled a training lesson and chose to remain quiet, allowing the silence to linger. This decision helped David process the information, and he gradually became more receptive to the benefits of the upgrade. Empowering Clients Through Listening Manny shared a story about Jessica's successful sales approach, where she used silence and active listening to help David overcome his concerns about a new training system. Through careful questioning and allowing space for thought, Jessica helped David realize the benefits of the system himself, leading to his decision to sign the contract. The story illustrates how effective listening and silence can empower clients to reach their own conclusions, resulting in successful outcomes. Enhancing Listening for Leadership Manny discussed the importance of effective listening in team and client interactions, referencing his book "Stop. Listen. and Lead" and offering a half-day seminar on listening skills. He introduced the concept of "Itchy Pants Syndrome," which describes the urge to immediately respond to questions or situations, and emphasized the value of patience in uncovering hidden secrets. Manny encouraged attendees to apply these lessons to improve their professional interactions. Active Listening: Key to Success Manny discussed the importance of active listening in team discussions and sales interactions. He explained that when people start formulating responses, they stop listening effectively, which can lead to missed opportunities and poor decision-making. Manny shared a story about a project manager who failed to listen to her team's feedback, resulting in project delays. He suggested exercises to help people overcome the tendency to interrupt and focus on listening instead. Enhancing Active Listening Techniques Manny discussed strategies for improving listening skills, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and redirecting the "itchy pants syndrome" - the urge to interrupt while someone else is speaking. He advised writing a note to oneself when this happens and focusing on active note-taking during conversations without planning responses. Manny also highlighted the value of allowing silence after someone finishes speaking and encouraged patience until the speaker indicates they are done. Active Listening: A Business Opportunity Manny discussed the importance of active listening and shared a personal story about a missed business opportunity due to interrupting a client and failing to understand their priorities. He encouraged listeners to practice active listening techniques and offered resources, including an audio version of the podcast and a book, for further learning. Manny concluded by inviting feedback and encouraging listeners to subscribe and share their thoughts.
UFO Buster Radio throwback, Manny was joined by Randy Butterfield and his mother as they shared a UFO encounter in the state of Utah back in 1947. At the time of the incident, she was 11 years old and was with her cousin at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Randy's great-grandfather was also with them and made them swear not to repeat the story. Randy's mother was 82 years old at the time of the interview and wanted to share her experience.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-tempest-universe--4712510/support.
This week on The Wednesday Wire... For our weekly catch up with the Green Party, Wire host Manny spoke MP Recardo Menendez March about agressive US foreign policy towards Venezuela and Greenland, the Manage My Health data breach, and his intentions going into the election year. They also spoke with National Secretary of the Public Service Association (PSA) about their complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Authority over failing police support for mental health workers. They also spoke with Commissioner North for Biosecurity New Zealand, Mike Inglis, on their work containing the invasive hornets found on the north shore and the fruit fly found in Mount Roskill. And Producer Castor spoke with Chief Executive of Retail NZ Carolyn Young about the recent closures of a string of businesses amidst rising costs and declining costumer bases.
Over our break, in moves that spread alarm aongst the international community, US President Donald Trump sent their special forces into Venezuela to take president Nicolas Maduro into US captivity and has since refused to rule out using the military again to take Greenland. At the same time, protests have once again surged across Iran as the economy buckles and tensions over morality laws continue to brew following the large scale women's rights protests over the last few years. The violent response from the state and continued support for the protests has sparked speculation on what would happen if the Islamic Republic were to fall. Closer to home, thousands of Kiwis' health information was taken when the online platform Manage My Health was hacked, leading to potentially sensitive health data ending up in the hands of unknown persons with unknown motives. For our weekly catch up with the Green Party, Wednesday Wire host Manny spoke MP Recardo Menendez March about agressive US foreign policy towards Venezuela and Greenland, and the Manage My Health data breach, aswell as his intentions going into the election year.

The Devonian Period was for plants what the Cambrian Period was for animals. Land plants really started to experiment with new forms of growth some 380 million years ago which led to the establishment of the first forests on Earth. We revisit a conversation with Dr. Chris Berry who was part of the team that recently discovered the oldest fossil evidence of forests. As you are going to hear, these forests were very different from the ones we know and love today. This episode was produced in part by Matthew, April, Dana, Lilith, Sanza, Eva, Yellowroot, Wisewren, Nadia, Heidi, Blake, Josh, Laure, R.J., Carly, Lucia, Dana, Sarah, Lauren, Strych Mind, Linda, Sylvan, Austin, Sarah, Ethan, Elle, Steve, Cassie, Chuck, Aaron, Gillian, Abi, Rich, Shad, Maddie, Owen, Linda, Alana, Sigma, Max, Richard, Maia, Rens, David, Robert, Thomas, Valerie, Joan, Mohsin Kazmi Photography, Cathy, Simon, Nick, Paul, Charis, EJ, Laura, Sung, NOK, Stephen, Heidi, Kristin, Luke, Sea, Shannon, Thomas, Will, Jamie, Waverly, Brent, Tanner, Rick, Kazys, Dorothy, Katherine, Emily, Theo, Nichole, Paul, Karen, Randi, Caelan, Tom, Don, Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.
A much-needed response. Chelsea hammer Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the FA Cup as Liam Rosenior's reign gets off to the perfect start with a comfortable, professional win away from home.Manny and Simon break down a dominant performance from a heavily rotated Chelsea side that never looked in trouble against the Championship outfit. The hosts highlight standout displays from Jorrel Hato, Moises Caicedo, and Jamie Gittens, all of whom impressed as Chelsea cruised into the next round. With the early positivity around Rosenior, Manny and Simon discuss realistic expectations for the new head coach — what success looks like, what patience is required, and how quickly Chelsea can stabilise after weeks of chaos. Finally, attention turns to a massive Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal on Wednesday, as Chelsea prepare for another huge test in what's suddenly a defining stretch of the season.

In 1956, Alfred Hitchcock focused his lens on an issue that cuts to the heart of our criminal justice system: the risk of wrongful conviction. The result was The Wrong Man, a bracing drama based on the real-life false arrest of Queens musician Christopher “Manny” Balestrero. Manny's ordeal is part of a larger story of other miscarriages of justice in the first half of the twentieth century. In Nothing to Fear: Alfred Hitchcock and the Wrong Men (Fayetteville Mafia Press, 2023), attorney Jason Isralowitz tells this story in a revelatory book that situates both the Balestrero case and its cinematic counterpart in their historical context. Drawing from archival records, Isralowitz delivers a gripping account of Manny' s trial and new insights into an errant prosecution. He then examines how Hitchcock' s film bears witness to issues that animate the contemporary innocence movement. Given the hundreds of exonerations of the wrongfully convicted in recent years, this genre-bending work of true crime and film history is a must-read. Jason Isralowitz is a partner in the New York office of Hogan Lovells. A Queens native, Jason graduated from Boston University's College of Communication with a bachelor's in journalism and holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has practiced law in Manhattan since 1993. Jason lives in Summit, New Jersey with his wife, Jennifer. Welcome to Inwood Art Works On Air. On this Artist Spotlight episode, we chat with actor and filmmaker, Manny PérezBorn in the Dominican Republic and based uptown in Washington Heights, Manny Pérez is a Dominican American actor that has gained international recognition for his contributions to film and television. He gained significant attention for his performance in the film "Washington Heights" (2002), which he cowrote and produced. His portrayal in this independent film earned him critical acclaim, with The New York Times noting that he has "charisma to burn." He has appeared in various television series, including "Third Watch," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," and "The Blacklist." His versatility as an actor has allowed him to take on both leading and supporting roles in numerous films, including "La Soga", which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, it's two sequels, and many others. Manny is not only recognized for his film work but also for his humanitarian efforts. He has been involved in charitable activities, including donating shoes to families affected by Hurricane Noel in the Dominican Republic.
Another disgraceful evening. Chelsea lose 2-1 away at Fulham, and Manny and Simon have reached breaking point. Another red card — this time for Marc Cucurella — more defensive lapses, more self-inflicted mistakes, and yet another performance that sums up exactly who Chelsea are in 2026 under this new regime. The hosts tear into a side that continues to repeat the same errors week after week. Indiscipline, poor game management, and a complete lack of accountability are defining this team. With just one win in nine Premier League games, serious questions are being asked — is the season already crashing and burning? There's also discussion around the powerful scenes from the away end, as Chelsea fans openly direct their anger at the ownership, a reflection of a fanbase that feels ignored and betrayed. Finally, Manny and Simon reluctantly look ahead to the FA Cup tie away at Charlton, asking whether this Chelsea side can respond at all — or whether more embarrassment lies ahead.

Against all odds, managerless Chelsea rescue a point with a dramatic last-minute goal away at Manchester City, and Chelsea Against The World is here to make sense of a truly surreal afternoon at the Etihad.Manny and Simon review an incredible fightback from a Chelsea side written off before kick-off. They hail Enzo Fernández and Reece James, who led by example to drag the Blues back into the game, showing leadership, belief, and pure Chelsea spirit. There's also major praise for interim boss Calum McFarlane, whose bravery and tactical changes played a huge role in turning the game around when it mattered most. The hosts then look ahead to the next Premier League fixture against Fulham, before discussing the planned protest by Chelsea fans against the ownership — a moment that feels increasingly inevitable given everything surrounding the club.

In his first “60 to 90 days” as CFO of Presidio, Manny Korakis learned that preparation doesn't cancel pressure, he tells us. “Now the buck stops here,” he tells us, and he “didn't really appreciate the pace” required until he was living it daily, he tells us.Korakis traces his move into enterprise thinking back to the McGraw Hill companies. Early on, he was “very technical” and “pretty close” to a singular controllership focus, he tells us. Then a mentor CFO pulled him into what they called the “growth and value plan,” he tells us. He worked on the “system landscape” and “data flow,” and on portfolio decisions about which assets were core and which were “distracting,” he tells us. That work drove the separation of McGraw Hill Education from the rest of McGraw Hill and a rebranding to “S&P Global,” he tells us. It also surfaced “hidden gems of value,” he tells us. Seeing theory turn “real life” became his “aha moment,” he tells us.In a later chapter, Korakis served as CFO of S&P Dow Jones Indices, where partners were aligned “in many cases,” but “not always aligned,” he tells us, requiring balance of “different needs and expectations,” he tells us.That arc shapes how he defines finance: not just “counting the beans,” but “highlighting the key things” so others decide better, he tells us. Today, he says finance “own[s] the model” for where Presidio wants to go, he tells us, and AI starts with “bite sized pieces,” he explains.
The drivers of evolution that result in the diversity of life we see around us are complex and fascinating. Nowhere is that more apparent than in pitcher plant genera like Nepenthes and Sarracenia.
