How do you bring all the ladybugs to the garden? Well, I'll tell you one thing: the solution is NOT to buy them. (No judgement if you have.) I used to buy ladybugs and release them with my kids, and in less than an hour, every single little pollinator would have disappeared. So trust me when I say this is a waste of time and money.   Instead of introducing ladybugs that come from afar, you can attract tons of ladybugs that live nearby, so they come and live in your garden. In this episod, I'll tell you how to attract lots of ladybugs and how to ensure they stick around for the long haul.   Learn more about our organic pest control system: https://gardenary.samcart.com/products/organic-pest-control-formula-special

Innovative Pest Control: BEETLESS' Non-Chemical Agricultural Trap

PLUGHITZ Live Presents (Video)

In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, the demand for innovative solutions in agriculture has never been more pressing. The agricultural sector faces numerous challenges, particularly in pest control, where traditional methods often involve harmful chemicals that can damage ecosystems and human health. In response to these challenges, Oleksandra Afanasieva, Co-Founder and CEO of BEETLESS, has introduced a groundbreaking solution: a non-chemical smart trap designed to protect crops from flying pests. This innovation not only addresses the immediate needs of farmers but also aligns with the growing trend towards sustainable farming practices.Sustainable Pest ControlBEETLESS, a female-founded startup from Ukraine, has developed a versatile device aimed at capturing various flying agricultural pests, with a particular focus on the Asian citrus psyllid. This pest poses a significant threat to orange orchards, especially in the United States, where states like Florida and California are heavily impacted. The problem extends beyond U.S. borders, affecting countries like Brazil, where BEETLESS has initiated field tests. By targeting specific pests while leaving beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, unharmed, BEETLESS represents a significant step forward in sustainable pest management.Designed for Modern AgricultureThe design of the BEETLESS trap is rooted in the natural instincts of insects. It employs a combination of visual, auditory, and olfactory attractants, including color, light, mating sounds, and pheromones, to lure pests towards the device. Once attracted, the pests are drawn into the trap through an airflow mechanism and are subsequently dehydrated without the use of harsh chemicals. This method not only effectively mitigates pest populations but also promotes a healthier ecosystem by preserving pollinators and beneficial insects. The impetus for developing such an innovative solution stems from the founders' backgrounds and experiences in pest control and agricultural robotics. Collaborating with established companies like Mosqitter and DroneUA, BEETLESS harnesses expertise from various fields to create a product that is both effective and environmentally friendly. The founders recognized the need for a sustainable alternative to traditional pest control methods, particularly in the context of organic farming, where the use of pesticides is often prohibited. By uniting their knowledge and resources, they have crafted a device that aligns with the principles of sustainable agriculture.Continuous Testing and ImprovementAs BEETLESS progresses through its field testing phase, the company is also collaborating with academic institutions to validate its approach. Partnerships with entities such as the University of Florida and UC Davis are crucial for ensuring that the device meets the rigorous standards required for agricultural use in the U.S. market. These collaborations will help refine the technology and expand its applicability to high-margin crops like berries and orchards, further enhancing its potential impact on sustainable farming practices. The timeline for BEETLESS's full market launch will depend on the outcomes of these tests and validations. However, the enthusiasm surrounding the project suggests that if all goes smoothly, the company could soon make a significant impact on pest control in agriculture. The potential for scaling production and expanding the reach of this innovative solution is promising, particularly as the agricultural sector increasingly seeks sustainable alternatives to chemical pest control. Conclusion: In conclusion, BEETLESS represents a significant advancement in the quest for sustainable pest management solutions. By combining innovative technology with a commitment to environmental stewardship, the company is poised to transform the way farmers approach pest control. As the agricultural industry continues to evolve, innovations like BEETLESS will play a crucial role in ensuring that farming practices are both productive and sustainable, ultimately contributing to a healthier planet.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 10:32

主播:Flora(中国)+ Selah(美国)音乐:Bring It All Back上次两个主播约节目录制时间的时候Selah突然说要推迟,是因为家里要进行全面的pest control——除虫! 01. What happened to Selah's house?Pest control is super normal in places like Arizona where it's dry and full of "little friends" you don't want inside. That sounds cute but also terrifying. Selah shared that recently, she and her husband started noticing lots of little bugs in their home. But then they got bigger... and multiplied (变多)! What kinds of bugs did they actually see? Cockroaches (蟑螂), earwigs(蠼螋), scorpions (蝎子) and termites (白蚁).That's a whole squad (简直是虫子小分队)! They look as scary as they sound—especially scorpions and termites, the ones that destroy your house from the inside. On that day, Selah spotted (发现) a scorpion... and it was like half the size of her hand! They got so jumpy (心惊肉跳) they had to pack up and crash at (投奔) her parents' house for a few nights. Professionals (专业人员) came, sprayed everything down (全面喷洒药剂), and they finally felt safe enough to move back in.They ended up getting professional pest control.02. What is Pest Control?Pest control means getting rid of unwanted insects or animals from your home or yard. It helps keep houses clean and safe. Actually, pest control isn't just about getting rid of bugs after you see them. A lot of Americans do it ahead of time It's like bug insurance, but less paperwork. They're like secret heroes—saving people from all the tiny unwanted guests!03. Why is Pest Control Common in the U.S.?In the U.S., especially places like Arizona and Florida (美国东南部的佛罗里达州), the warm climate means bugs are active all year (虫子全年都很活跃).Plus, many people live in houses with yards—more exposure to nature (和自然接触更多) means more contact with pests. So it's pretty normal to have some "unexpected visitors (不速之客)" sneaking in from nature!其实这是其中一个方面,另一方面是他们也特别重视房屋维护(house maintenance--keeping everything clean, safe, and in good shape)。People want to protect their homes, especially from things like termites that can damage the structure. 04. How Does Pest Control Work?First, you schedule an appointment The exterminator comes to check your home and yard for signs of pests (害虫的迹象).Then they spray (喷洒药剂) around the outside and sometimes inside if needed. For major issues like termites, they might do fumigation—熏蒸处理—but that's less common. The cost all depends on what kind of service you need. It can range from $70 a month to $300 a month (约合人民币500-2000元)… it also depends on what kind of house you have and how serious the problem is. But most people will do it to prevent long term problems and having to worry about creatures in your house, especially if you live in places like Arizona. Are the chemicals they spray harmful to people (喷洒的药剂是否对人体有害)?Most of the time, they tell you to take your pets and stay out of the house for a few hours. It kills the bugs and pests within 7-10 days but is not harmful for humans. But it would harm pets at first, so they recommend to keep pets away for 5-6 hours. Just think of it as giving your pets a little vacation.05. Every Place Has Its “Wild Neighbors(野生邻居)”It's like Australians having to share their space with kangaroos and giant spiders-- scary but kinda funny! Every place has its own “wild neighbors.” In Australia, it's kangaroos and giant spiders. In Canada, it's raccoons digging through trash cans. In Arizona, scorpions sometimes show up! Share your wild neighbor stories with us—we'd love to hear them!

The discussion provided an in-depth look at the extensive services offered by Dodson Pest Control and highlighted the company's rich history and family-oriented operation. Dodson Pest Control, established in 1944, has grown to serve nine states, with a strong presence in communities such as Winchester. Vince and Tim detailed the wide range of services they offer, from residential to commercial and industrial pest control. The services extend to unique situations like treating RVs, an area Tim knows well from personal experience. Listeners learned about the common pests in the area, the importance of prevention, and the incredible expertise Dodson Pest Control brings to the table. The conversation also delved into specific pests like spiders, ants, termites, and bedbugs, with Vince and Tim sharing valuable insights on treatment and prevention. One of the key takeaways was the importance of professional inspections, which Dodson offers for free. The experts emphasized that using over-the-counter products can often do more harm than good.
