Jonathan Levy a.k.a. “Zero Waste Guy” is a waste and recycling consultant who works with businesses to help them systemically root out wasteful practices to reduce environmental harm. Jonathan shares how working as an operations supervisor at a 2 million square foot Target warehouse (optimizing the flow of single-use disposable items) led him to a career in waste reduction. Jonathan talks about what's recyclable or compostable, what isn't, and what really happens to our trash. He also gives tips for reducing waste on an individual level, why we can't actually achieve “zero waste” or fit all of our trash in a mason jar, and talks about the importance of legislation to effectuate change. Jonathan also touches on the astonishing amount of textile waste that is produced in Los Angeles and the challenges the city and its waste haulers face dealing with enormous volumes of textile scraps. Jonathan Levy graduated from college and took the job that he thought he was supposed to take. Soon after he found himself working in corporate America in a 2 million square foot retail distribution center full of cheap products designed to wear out and be thrown away. His felt that his life was spiraling out of control. Imagine for a second if you did not throw away anything? You created no garbage? His work life was becoming completely out of balance with his personal life where he was embracing a zero waste way of living and he got to the point where he had no choice, so he quit. Since that moment he’s turned his idea and purpose into a career that previously didn’t exist. He is now a Zero Waste Project Manager working with companies and municipalities to reduce their garbage by actually reusing it. We discuss... The mindset of taking the job that he was SUPPOSED to take. His role as a Supply Chain Manager. The realization that his professional life and personal life were completely out of alignment. How he followed his personal passion and focus into a completely new career and professional movement. Him quitting his job without a plan. His research in European countries to design the next phase of his career around a city's sustainability. How he created the brand, Zero Waste Guy, and created a career that previously didn't exist. Working with municipalities to help them use less and re-use their garbage. How he goes out to dinner with friends with his own napkins and utensils. Introducing a plant based diet into his life. Jonathan Levy describes himself as the Zero Waste Guy. In this episode, we explore his perspectives on how he helps organizations reduce their waste. When he first started consulting he called his business Disruptive Consulting and quickly learned that few people want work with a disruptor. In his work, Jonathan is trying to make businesses as green as they allow him to. He has learned that organizations are not always ready to go commit to zero waste, but he has adopted the approach that it is better to make the best decisions he can given the constraints within the context he is working. For him, getting organizations closer to zero-waste is the goal, but if he doesn't achieve that, he is still diverting considerable waste from the landfill. Jonathan is not an advocate for repeal and replace approaches to change. He argues that we cannot expect people to make radical modify their behaviour. For him, small changes can have massive impacts and he gives some very practical examples in the show. In his work, he takes an incremental approach to creating change and in the show we discuss the merits of a small change approach versus a go big or go home perspective. We also discuss the what he described as waiting for other people to be the change they want to see in the world. For him, we need to take a multi-prong approach in how we make change part of the mainstream. This muti-prong approach awakens various parts of the system. In this rich episode, we dive into a number of practical insights that Jonathan shares.
