BONUS: Rediscovering Agile's Roots, What We Can Learn From Lean Manufacturing with Doug Rabow In this BONUS episode, we reconnect with Doug Rabow, a previous guest and an expert in Lean-Agile strategic management known for his dedication to fostering empowered teams and enhancing processes through Lean principles. This discussion dives into the foundations of Lean, its evolution from manufacturing, and how software development can benefit from these time-tested methodologies. Join us as we uncover how adopting Lean can transform software practices and culture to align more closely with the true spirit of Agile. Introduction to Lean and the Toyota Production System (TPS) "Lean isn't just a methodology; it's an ongoing journey of learning and problem-solving." Doug begins by mapping out the origins of Lean and its cornerstone, the Toyota Production System (TPS) (Wikipedia article on TPS). Initially crafted to solve operational challenges in manufacturing, TPS introduced principles aimed at efficiency and continual improvement. Doug underscores that while Agile has gained broader recognition, Lean provides an essential, often overlooked foundation that extends beyond frameworks like Lean Six Sigma or isolated process improvements. "Lean isn't a set-and-forget solution; it's about cultivating an evolving culture of problem-solving." Cultural Foundations of Lean: Adapting for Software Teams "Respect for people and a culture of continuous improvement form the heartbeat of Lean." Transitioning to software development, Doug highlights the core cultural tenets that empower teams to excel. He points out that scaling these principles—such as fostering a culture where problem-solving is embedded in daily practices—is vital due to the complexities of software as a people-driven process. Referencing Conway's Law, Doug illustrates how the structure of teams directly impacts code and workflow. "Developing software is as much about building teams as it is about building products. Lean teaches us that these are inseparable." The Toyota Way: A Blueprint for Excellence "Applying Lean is about chasing excellence, not just managing tasks." Jeffrey Liker's The Toyota Way introduces 14 principles that Doug relates to software environments, emphasizing the value of discipline and respect for people. He discusses the importance of aligning processes with long-term strategies and ensuring that these processes are designed to foster continuous learning. Doug reiterates that truly understanding and integrating Lean requires more than surface-level adoption. "Respect for people isn't an add-on in Lean; it's the root of a thriving, innovative team culture." Waste in Software Development: Insights from the Poppendiecks "Work in progress is not an asset; it's a liability." Doug shares insights from Mary and Tom Poppendieck's (Mary and Tom have been on our podcast here) pioneering work on Lean Software Development, particularly their adaptation of waste types from manufacturing to software. These include partially done work, extra features, relearning, handoffs, and task switching. Doug points out that waste reduction strategies—such as Kanban and pull systems—help teams minimize bottlenecks and optimize flow. "Software development, like manufacturing, benefits from visualizing value streams and focusing on reducing waste." Metrics and Measurement in Lean "The right process will create the right results—focus on process metrics, not individual metrics." In Lean, metrics are crucial for assessing and refining processes. Doug advocates for using metrics like cycle time and throughput to provide teams with insights into system efficiency. He explains how focusing on process metrics rather than individual productivity helps sustain a culture that prioritizes team learning and growth. "When we measure what truly matters—the process—we empower teams to solve problems collectively and improve outcomes." About Doug Rabow Doug Rabow is a dedicated practitioner of Lean-Agile strategic management with an emphasis on building empowered teams and optimizing processes through Lean methodologies. His extensive experience in applying Lean principles in software development has made him a trusted voice in the Agile and Lean community. You can link with https://www.linkedin.com/in/dougrabow.

Send me a messageIn this episode of the Sustainable Supply Chain podcast, I spoke with Krenar Komoni, the CEO and founder of Tive, about the transformative impact of real-time tracking on supply chain sustainability. We explored how Tive's technology is enabling companies to reduce waste by providing immediate data on the location and condition of shipments, particularly for temperature-sensitive goods like perishables and pharmaceuticals.Krenar shared compelling examples of how real-time monitoring can prevent spoilage. For instance, companies like Alpine Fresh have used Tive's trackers to detect temperature excursions during transit, allowing them to correct issues in real-time and save entire shipments. Similarly, Optimised Courier was able to intervene when a pharmaceutical shipment was delayed on a tarmac, ensuring the products remained within their stability budget. We also discussed the surprising reliance on outdated methods, such as spreadsheets, in billion-dollar supply chain operations. Krenar emphasised the necessity of practical and simple technological solutions to drive industry-wide adoption and efficiency.Looking ahead, we delved into the potential of AI and machine learning in shaping the future of supply chains. While these technologies offer significant opportunities for predictive analytics and increased autonomy, Krenar noted that geopolitical risks pose substantial challenges to global sustainability efforts.Additionally, Krenar recommended the documentary "Beyond Zero", which has significantly influenced his approach to sustainability by highlighting the importance of waste reduction and sustainable manufacturing practices.Tune in to this episode to gain valuable insights into how real-time data and innovative technologies are essential for building more sustainable and efficient supply chains.Elevate your brand with the ‘Sustainable Supply Chain' podcast, the voice of supply chain sustainability.Last year, this podcast's episodes were downloaded over 113,000 times by senior supply chain executives around the world.Become a sponsor. Muscles & Mindset Podcast Episode: Finding Your "Enough": Exploring Abundance vs. Scarcity Introduction Welcome to the Muscles & Mindset Podcast with Dr. Ali Novitsky. In this episode, your favorite obesity medicine doc/fitness guru/physician coach delves into the concept of "enough" and how understanding it can lead to a more abundant life, both physically and mentally. This episode is inspired by Dr. Ali's recent six-week slow travel experience in Greece, which provided her with numerous "a-ha moments" that she is excited to share with you. Key Themes What is "Enough"? We explore the idea of "enough" in various aspects of life: Tangible Aspects: Money, weight loss, muscle mass, clothes, shoes, and purses. Intangible Aspects: Emotional and mental fulfillment, showing up as a parent or partner. Abundance vs. Scarcity Dr. Ali discusses how feelings of scarcity often manifest in tangible ways when we feel disconnected in our lives. For example, feeling a lack of money when there is emotional disconnection. Our brains tend to make abstract concepts tangible, which can lead to a scarcity mindset. Personal Experience in Greece The Packing Fiasco Dr. Ali shares a humorous yet enlightening story about arriving in Greece with eight full suitcases, only to realize that she had packed WAY more than necessary. This experience highlighted the concept of "enough" and how we often overestimate our needs. Living Simply Living in a three-bedroom apartment in Syros, Greece, with her family taught her the value of simplicity. They had fewer clothes, shopped daily for groceries, and wasted less. This minimalist lifestyle made her feel more abundant and less stressed. Practical Applications of "Enough" Financial "Enough" Dr. Ali Novitsky discusses setting a tangible "enough" for yearly income and focusing on meeting that without feeling scarcity. If individuals feel scarcity despite meeting their financial goals, it may be rooted in past experiences. Weight Loss "Enough" In her weight loss programs, Dr. Novitsky emphasizes "optimal weight loss," which focuses on maintaining muscle mass while losing body fat. She encourages setting realistic weight loss goals based on muscle mass and body fat ratio rather than arbitrary numbers. Reflections and Changes Personal Growth Dr. Novitsky's time in Greece prompted significant personal growth. She realized that she is enough as a partner, mother, daughter, and friend. This newfound self-acceptance has led to changes in her goals, lifestyle, and what she is willing to tolerate. Professional Offerings Dr. Novitsky introduces several programs designed to help individuals achieve optimal health: Muscles and Mindset: Beginner and advanced strength training programs. Transform for Physicians: A CME program extending from six months to a year. Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss: Support for those on GLP-1 agonists. Nutrition Training for Healthcare Providers: A six-week live training program starting October 7th. Conclusion Dr. Novitsky encourages everyone to reflect on what "enough" means in their lives and how they can shift from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance. She thanks the audience for joining her on this journey and looks forward to helping them find their abundance. Until next time, stay healthy and abundant! The blog post Ecologists and other environmentally aware people often talk about the goal of "Zero Waste." But, of course, that's an outstanding goal for business as well.Reducing waste is at the heart of the Lean business methodology. The purpose of Lean is to spend more of your time creating value for customers by reducing or eliminating everything that does not produce value (AKA the waste). Value can take the form of finished goods, services, or information. To make it easier to identify waste in business processes, Lean practitioners target eight specific types of waste.Although the Lean approach originated in manufacturing, it is used in almost every sector. Strikingly the eight wastes are common across industries, including software development, construction, healthcare, and education. Although it is not as apparent as it may be on a factory floor, the set of tasks and activities performed in any sector creates a production process that ultimately provides value to a customer. While some of the wastes are self-explanatory, others are more difficult to recognize. This post aims to help by giving a few examples of each type of waste in various businesses. Hopefully, they will help you think about how waste may be occurring in your operations and how to begin designing processes that minimize it. Of course, the people who are most likely to find and correct waste are the process operators, so it is a good idea to share these examples with them and provide a way for each employee to submit opportunities for improvement.

The holiday season is a time we all want to enjoy. Maybe that means indulging in more food than usual, buying those special gifts and treats for loved ones, and going all out with decorations in your home. But with all that indulgence, comes a lot of waste. At the end of the holiday season, an additional 1 million tons of trash enter landfills. According to Stanford University's Waste Reduction, Recycling, Composting and Solid Waste Program, household waste increases by more than 25% from Thanksgiving to New Year's. This comes from various sources including wrapping paper, Christmas trees and even food waste. But experts say there are easy ways to reduce your carbon footprint and have a greener holiday season. Today, we talk about ways to reduce holiday waste. GUESTS: Miriah Kelly: Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, Southern Connecticut State University Brittney Cavalliere: Senior Director of Strategy Connecticut Food Share, a food bank based in Bloomfield and Bridgeport Yasmine Ugurlu: the Founder and Owner of Reboot Eco, a zero waste shop in Middletown Connecticut Where We Live is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Listen Notes, or wherever you get your podcasts. Today's episode is proof that when an idea sounds too good to be true, it doesn't mean that it's not possible, it just means that it's a great business idea. Martin leveraged unique industry insight to build a business that captures the enormous amount of waste that so many industries blast out without giving it a second thought. He patented energy-storing blocks that can store 1.2MWh of thermal energy at a temperature level of up to 1,300 °C. This means that we can store the heat byproducts of tons of heavy industries, which can translate into cost savings, decarbonizing entire industries, and generally making our whole society much more efficient. He had a brilliant idea, he executed on that idea, and he saw near immediate success bringing his brilliance into the world. I love crazy, out of the box solutions like this, and I know you will too. ➡️ https://kraftblock.com/en/ ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/martin-schichtel ➡️ Follow me on Instagram: @therosspalmer ➡️ Subscribe on YouTube: @therosspalmer
