text us if...This month we had the privilege of getting to know author and activist, Kelly Catlin. Kelly is the author of Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom, a charity-driven book that explores Kurt Cobain's legacy through interviews, research, and a focus on empathy, mental health, and advocacy. "In 2017, a month after my wedding, I lost my family member, Walter, a 33 year old Veteran Marine, to suicide. He was a lifelong Nirvana fan. I wrote this book to try and process that loss, and to hopefully remove the romanticism surrounding one of the most well-documented suicides of the 20th century. It's why I don't keep a penny from the book. Everything I do is to hopefully encourage open, honest discussions about mental health in honor of two amazing men. I never learned about Kurt, the musician, but Kurt, my friend's friend. It was an incredible experience, and one I don't take for granted. It's not a standard bio but a bio/memoir. In my book, Kurt is a lens to discuss larger, systemic issues and what we can do to help those who suffer in plain sight. Just a little context for the project and why the book exists. I wish I never had to write it, but I hope it can help someone. The back of the book is all mental health resources and hotlines to contact/free resources for those in need."There will be a regional book tour this fall when the book comes back out, and she'll be touring with a NJ-based band that focuses on inclusivity and positivity. The events double as food drives, so the goal is to really take the book and use it to help the community as a whole. Some organizations supported include mental health, suicide awareness, children's advocacy, animal rescue, and local food banks. Rebecca Bloom is a former employee benefits and executive compensation attorney who spent more than 25 years helping women navigate cancer, work, insurance, disability coverage, and financial survival. She is the founder and author of When Women Get Sick, a book built from decades inside the legal, workplace, and patient advocacy systems most people only discover after diagnosis.Bloom started in Big Law at Simpson Thacher handling employee benefits and compensation work she originally chose to pay off student loans. Then her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly the language she used in corporate law offices became the language of survival at home. Explanation of benefits forms. Coverage disputes. Second opinions. Disability protections. Medical leave. Bills no one could explain. That collision changed the direction of her life.In this episode, Bloom explains how serious illness quietly turns patients into unpaid administrators managing paperwork, logistics, financial risk, and emotional labor while trying to survive treatment. She breaks down how employer based health insurance shapes nearly every aspect of cancer care in America and why women often carry the invisible burden of protecting everyone else from discomfort while they themselves fall apart. The conversation digs into workplace power, the illusion of the healthcare “safety net,” caregiver exhaustion, and the class divide hiding underneath patient empowerment culture. Bloom explains why educated, insured women with resources still struggle to navigate healthcare bureaucracy and what happens to patients without those advantages. This episode explores cancer care, health insurance, employee benefits, patient advocacy, workplace protections, caregiving, and the structural incentives that force sick people to become project managers of their own survival.RELATED LINKSRebecca BloomWhen Women Get SickBay Area Cancer ConnectionsSimpson Thacher & BartlettFEEDBACKLike this episode? In this episode of the Animal Training Academy podcast, host Ryan Cartlidge is joined by special guest Irith Bloom — a certified professional dog trainer, behaviour consultant, and co-founder of Carefree Companion. Together, Ryan and Irith explore the profound role that language, word choice, and communication play in animal training and human coaching. Irith shares her fascinating behavioral odyssey, starting from her childhood obsession with animals and training large Rottweilers using verbal cues and minimal force, to discovering positive reinforcement in the early 2000s. Drawing on her background as a polyglot who speaks multiple languages fluently, Irith discusses how experiencing life as a linguistic and cultural outsider has shaped her deep empathy and intentionality around communication. The conversation dives into the nuances of how trainers talk to human clients, examining why shifting phrasing—such as describing a dog as exhibiting "fearful behavior" rather than labeling the animal as "fearful"—can completely change a client's mindset, prevent limiting assumptions, and open the door to positive change. Irith and Ryan also discuss the importance of approaching human clients with the same curiosity, grace, and understanding that trainers naturally offer to non-human animals. They unpack the psychological biases that lead us to view human behavior as strictly intentional while giving animals more leeway, and how cultivating self-awareness and practice helps professionals become more effective coaches. The episode closes with a look ahead at what Irith hopes to see in the industry over the next five to 10 years: a future where routinely looking for both assent and consent from non-human animals becomes completely normal. Throughout this episode, we discuss: ✅ Irith's behavioral odyssey from childhood dog training to becoming a multi-certified professional behavior consultant ✅ How speaking multiple languages influences Irith's perspective on communication across species ✅ The strategic power of language and why avoiding rigid labels like "fearful" helps keep client minds open ✅ Re-examining the use of force and language when describing traditional training methods ✅ Why trainers should approach human clients with the same curiosity and grace extended to animals ✅ The role of continuous practice, self-awareness, and embracing mistakes in professional growth ✅ Irith's 5-to-10-year industry vision: making the routine seeking of assent and consent second nature Whether you are a professional trainer, behaviour consultant, or passionate pet owner, this conversation offers empowering insights into how better communication with both humans and animals can create a more harmonious, choice-rich world.
This Week: A superintendent in Massachusetts has put out a fascinating take on a revision to the ubiquitous Bloom's Taxonomy, the helpful tool which has defined orders of thinking for decades in education. In the age of AI, he claims, the hierarchical nature of Bloom's no longer reflects the more complex arc of thinking students will do in a world where humans think with AI. It's an interesting take, and solidly sidesteps all of the most perilous ramifications of the rush to bring AI into the classroom. Plus, the confederates in charge of the federal government made it official this week. The US Dept of Education will no longer use “disparate impact” as criteria for holding state, districts, or schools accountable for compliance with the Title XI of the Civil RIghts Act of 1964, effectively gutting the landmark legislation. Now, short of having a smoking gun, or video evidence of officials spewing epithets, it will be virtually impossible for plaintiffs to seek federal relief from systemically racist practices in America's schools. Most graduate programs run three conversations that never touch: what learners need, what curriculum teaches, and what employers expect on day one. The Bridge Matrix is a single tool — built on Bloom's Taxonomy — that plots all three on one grid, so the gaps between them become visible instead of assumed. This Play walks through how to build the matrix, read it, and run it twice: once to plan a curriculum cycle, and again to prove what changed.

Tayler also shares her vision for building a stronger community for women working in sports throughout St. Louis, the lessons she's learned as both an athlete and educator, and why she believes the city is ready for even more investment in women's professional sports. From unforgettable championship moments to the future of sports media, this episode is an inspiring conversation about leadership, community, and the people helping shape the next generation of sports. They discuss: - Growing up on a farm in Industry, Illinois, and playing volleyball at the University of Illinois - Winning the "Be the Bloom" contest and becoming the Bloom and Onion mascot at the 2019 Outback Bowl - Launching the Bloom Pod during the pandemic and its focus on everyday people with big ideas - Finishing a doctorate on women's self-perception of power in sports leadership during Title IX's 50th anniversary - The decision to rebrand and relaunch as Hangtime, focused solely on women in sports - Interviewing ESPNW founder Laura Gentile and what it took to build a media category from scratch - The Deloitte projection of $3 billion in women's sports revenue for 2026 - Why traditional brands still don't know how to market to women's sports fans - Growing up without girls' sports and finding a North Star in local player Sam Quiggle - The 1999 U.S. Women's World Cup and Brandi Chastain as formative childhood moments - Reaching the national championship match with Illinois volleyball in 2011 - Teaching in UMSL's Sports Management program and getting students into the Super Bowl, Final Four, and NFL Draft - Hangtime's first in-person event at Urban Chestnut and the upcoming membership launch on August 1st - Bringing more pro women's sports — WNBA, NWSL, PWHL — to St. LouisSupport the show

If you've ever looked at a cotton field and thought, “Do I really need to spray again,” this conversation is for you. We sit down with Dr. Jeremy Green (Clemson) and Whitney Crow (Mississippi State) to get real about cotton insect management when the crop is all over the board and the weather is either too wet or too dry.We start with what cotton looks like right now across their regions, then zoom in on the decision that drives everything else: scouting. We talk about why a consultant's “shadow” can cost less than one insecticide trip, how economic thresholds keep inputs honest, and how missing one timing can turn into expensive resprays. From squaring into bloom, we sort through the usual suspects like plant bugs, stink bugs, aphids, and spider mites, plus the new complications of resistance and secondary pest flare-ups.We also dig into tools and tactics growers are asking about: Diamond timing during peak plant bug migration, what ThryvOn can and cannot do, how longer residual products change your spray schedule, and why stink bug decisions should follow boll injury and week-of-bloom risk instead of a fixed calendar. Then we tackle cotton jassid, why it seems tied to blooming cotton, and what late-season surprises could mean for termination timing. If you care about integrated pest management, cotton scouting, insect thresholds, and protecting yield while cutting costs, you'll get a lot from this one.Subscribe for more Cotton Specialist Corner conversations, share this episode with a neighbor, and leave a review.

Today's poem is Nobody's Job by Ronna Bloom. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes… “We call an ending “resonant” because it does what a bell does: After it's rung, the vibration lingers. It reverberates. It sticks with you long after you've read the piece, humming in your head. Today's poem is beautiful start to finish, but the ending astonished me. It moved me to tears, which caught me by surprise! If you don't know this poem, I'm envious that you get to experience it for the first time.”This show is supported by gifts from listeners. Power your daily dose of poetry at Slowdownshow.org/donate

In a world of constant, rapid digital transformation, one industry has struggled to evolve: construction. With all the gains made in efficiency and productivity, what's holding the construction industry back? Brian Potter is a senior fellow at the Institute for Progress and author of the book, The Origins of Efficiency which charts the history of production efficiency, examining the great leaps forward with inventions like penicillin, the light bulb, and automobiles. Brian joins Greg to share his experience in the construction industry that prompted his research into productivity and why construction productivity appears flat compared with manufacturing and agriculture. They also discuss distinctions between labor productivity and overall efficiency, the central role of scale and fixed costs, why tacit knowledge makes process transfer hard across plants and countries, and political obstacles such as guilds and unions resisting automation, including AI. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: A factory is like a big sociotechnical machine 16:55: A factory is like a big sociotechnical machine where some of the capability lives in the machine, and a lot of it lives in, like, the processes that have been implemented and the heads of the people that are working on the line and know exactly what they have to do to make this work effectively. And it all kind of works together as one uniform thing. A lot of that is, like, not necessarily written down any place. It's either in this knowledge of these guys' heads, it's not written down, or it's, like, an emergent property of how all these things kind of work together, and it's very hard to decompose that and transfer it to a new place. It's often quite difficult to do that. Has scale been the primary driver of efficiency since the Industrial Revolution? 08:42: Scale is a really big part of it for a lot of reasons. One is that just scaling effects are very powerful on their own. And then two is that scaling actually ends up being like a gating mechanism for a lot of other efficiency improvements in the sense that a lot of other efficiency improvements that you might implement need some sort of level, need some sort of scale, to be able to deploy them because they operate like large fixed costs. What is the genesis of “The Origins of Efficiency” 05:59: To understand why construction is so hard to make more efficient, I need to understand what other industries are doing to get more efficient. What strategies are they employing? And then I could understand why those strategies don't work in construction or whatever. Ryan Bloom grew up in a good family in Oklahoma with dreams of becoming a dentist. Life took a different turn and he built an electrical contracting business instead. When the business lost a major contract he turned to a small bank for help — and got pulled into a high interest invoice lending situation that ultimately left him owing over $2 million and forced to declare bankruptcy. Ryan thought everything he was doing was completely legitimate. Then the feds came for him. He was indicted for bank fraud — and discovered the prosecutor had a conflict of interest with the bank. He fought back. He spent almost $500,000 in attorney fees. And he beat the federal government. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Ryan breaks down the complete story — from the business collapse to the bankruptcy to the federal indictment to the courtroom victory that cost him everything financially but gave him his freedom. _____________________________________________ #fraud #TrueCrime #arrest _____________________________________________ Connect with Ryan Bloom: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rdbloom _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and Early Life 01:52 Family Background and Childhood 03:23 College Dreams and Choosing a Career 04:44 Joining and Growing the Family Business 05:46 Family Infighting and Company's Downfall 06:34 New Start in Oil & Gas, Launching Own Business 07:46 Launching Pathfinder HDD and Business Pivot 08:22 Business Growth and Early Successes 09:14 Winning Big Contracts and Facing Setbacks 10:19 Losing Major Contracts and Transitioning to EV 11:16 Cash Flow Issues and Getting Hustled 13:06 Switching to Riskier Clients & Financial Mistakes 14:55 Survival Strategies and Bank Loans 16:46 Entering the Bank's Business Manager Program 19:09 Struggling with Loan Terms and Shrinking Cash Flow 23:32 Business Hits a Wall and Approaching Insolvency 26:00 Personal Consequences & Potential Bankruptcy 28:29 Winding Down Operations and Filing Bankruptcy 31:06 Bankruptcy Process and Asset Liquidation 35:51 Personal Impact and Family Resilience 39:03 Navigating Bankruptcy Exemptions 41:02 Life After Bankruptcy: Rebuilding 44:41 Facing Litigation and Bank's Aggressive Tactics 46:58 Legal Uncertainty and Approaching Discharge 50:02 Arrest by FBI and Shock of Indictment 54:41 Processing the Arrest and Immediate Aftermath 59:30 Public Reaction and Family Support 01:02:44 Beginning the Legal Battle 01:05:12 Prosecution's Case Building and Strange Accusations 01:10:01 Defending Against Fraud Allegations 01:17:01 Legal Strategy and Conflict of Interest 01:21:59 Superseding Indictment and Witness Tampering 01:27:53 Bank's Insurance Claim and Motivations for Prosecution 01:32:00 Preparing for Trial and Hiring Top Defense 01:39:13 Conflict of Interest, Disqualifying the Prosecutor 01:46:07 Case Dismissal and Pre-Trial Diversion 01:50:01 Financial Ruin and Emotional Toll 01:53:02 Life Lessons, Resilience, and Moving On 02:03:40 Advice on Integrity and Closing Thoughts _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka Learn more about your ad choices.
