Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on guitarist Nels Cline. Most people know Nels Cline as Wilco's guitarist for the past two decades. But his range goes far beyond indie rock. He's spent forty-plus years moving between jazz clubs, punk venues, and studios where the rules get bent or thrown out entirely. Rolling Stone put him on their list of the top 100 guitarists of all time, but that tells you nothing about how he actually plays. His current project, Trio of Bloom, pairs him with keyboardist Craig Taborn and drummer Marcus Gilmore on Pyroclastic Records. The three had never played together before producer David Breskin brought them into the studio in November 2024. What came out sounds like a band that's been working together for years, full of ambient drift and barbed funk that explores the outer edges of dub.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Trio of Bloom's self-titled album)–Dig DeeperArtist and AlbumVisit Nels Cline at nelscline.com and follow him on Instagram and FacebookVisit Craig Taborn at craigtaborn.com and follow him on InstagramVisit Marcus Gilmore at drummerslams.com and follow him on InstagramPurchase Trio of Bloom from Bandcamp or Qobuz and listen on your streaming platform of choiceTrio of Bloom on Pyroclastic RecordsCollaborators and ProducerDavid Breskin - producer, poet, and creative catalystKris Davis - founder of Pyroclastic RecordsPyroclastic Records - independent label supporting creative musicKey Groups and Projects MentionedWilco - Nels Cline has been guitarist since 2004The Nels Cline Singers - long-running experimental projectNels Cline 4 - featuring Julian Lage, Scott Colley, and Tom RaineyConsentrik Quartet - with Ingrid Laubrock, Chris Lightcap, and Tom Rainey on Blue Note RecordsCover Songs ReferencedTerje Rypdal - What Comes After (ECM, 1974) - source of "Bend It"Wayne Shorter & Milton Nascimento - Native Dancer (Columbia, 1975) - source of "Diana"Ronald Shannon Jackson & Decoding Society - Eye On You (About Time, 1980) - source of "Nightwhistlers"Original Compositions ReferencedInitiate by Nels Cline Singers (Cryptogramophone, 2010) - source of "Forge" and "King Queen" (which became "Queen King")Marcus Gilmore - "Breath"Craig Taborn - "Unreal Light" and "Why Canada"Nels Cline - "Eye Shadow Eye," "Gone Bust"Free improvisation - "Bloomers"Visual ArtSharon Core - painter whose flower series adorns the albumIrving Penn - photographer whose 1980 'Flowers' series inspired Core's paintingsYancey Richardson Gallery - representing Sharon CoreHistorical ReferencesPower Tools - Bill Frisell, Melvin Gibbs, Ronald Shannon Jackson trio produced by David Breskin (1987)John Zorn's Cobra - game piece and performance systemThe Knitting Factory (original NYC venue) - seminal downtown jazz and experimental music venueNYC Venues MentionedThe Stone - John Zorn's performance spaceRoulette - experimental music venue in BrooklynVillage Vanguard - legendary jazz clubLittlefield - Brooklyn venue (now closed)The Bellhouse - Brooklyn music venueiBeam Music Brooklyn - performance spaceGet MoreDig into this episode's complete show notes at podcast.thetonearm.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? Ritratti di Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Bernhard, Harold Bloom, Adone Brandalise, Cristina Campo, Guido Ceronetti, Ioan Petru Culianu, David Graeber, Ivan Illich, Pierre Klossowski, Anna Maria Ortese, Tom Seidmann-Freud, Ferdinando Tartaglia.

Episode 103 is the third and final part of our three-part Flower Essence Series. In this episode, Justin and I explore the remedies that support us through the heavier passages of the inner life, the flowers for despair, exhaustion, guilt, trauma, and the deep burdens that come with caring for others. We look at how remedies like Larch, Pine, Elm, Sweet Chestnut, Star of Bethlehem, Willow, Oak, and Crab Apple help restore confidence, soften resentment, bring comfort after shock, and guide us through moments when we feel we have reached our limit. We also explore the remedies for overcare, the states where love becomes pressure or control and where dedication turns into strain. Chicory, Vervain, Vine, Beech, Rock Water help us return to balance, offering care that honors both self and other, and leadership that flows from humility and joy rather than tension. This closing chapter ties together the full arc of the series, inviting a deeper understanding of how these remedies support emotional integration, spiritual renewal, and a more compassionate way of moving through the world. You can book a flower essence consultation at astralmeadow.com IG @astralmeadowsSources & Recommended ReadingBach Flower Remedies: Form and Function by Julian Barnard (Flower Essence Society, 2002)Bach Flower Therapy: Theory and Practice by Mechthild Scheffer (Healing Arts Press, 1988)

There has been a lawsuit filed against Tony Bloom and his sports gambling syndicate alleging, well, the lawsuit is actually just asking for money. But it is also about how sports gambling syndicates work and specifically how the one owned and run by the owner of Brighton works, and we wanted to talk about that and about Premier League gambling policy. In this episode I am once again joined by Duncan Barford, occult practitioner, counsellor, and author of “Occult Experiments in the Home”. Duncan begins with an analysis of the 2016 film, “A Dark Song”, which he believes is the most accurate depiction of occult practice in cinema. Duncan details the plot, breaks down its depictions of ritual, and shares his own emotional reaction to the film's climax. Duncan then shifts gear and gives a detailed explanation of the infamous Abramelin ritual, a multi-month ritual considered by many to be the most ambitious working a magician can attempt. Duncan gives a survey of the major written accounts of those who have attempted it including Aleister Crowley, Lionel Snell, and William Bloom; reveals why the ritual has such a high failure rate; and shares what he believes is the key to success. Duncan also analyses the esoteric structure of Coleridge's poem “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and interprets it as a description of the spiritual path, proposes an equivalency between success in the Abramelin and Buddhist stream entry, and reveals why he believes the study of history is an obstacle to magickal success. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep336-the-magick-of-abramelin-duncan-barford-3 Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:28 - The Magick of A Dark Song 02:45 - The film 04:41 - The Abramelin Ritual 07:23 - Cinematic depictions of magick 08:04 - Spoiler warnings and the plot 08:24 - Hiring the magician 10:03 - Sophia's motive for the ritual 11:36 - A deep understanding of how ritual works 14:40 - Describing the magickal working 17:04 - Meeting the Holy Guardian Angel 21:01 - The practitioner's journey 25:58 - Characer arcs 30:03 - The key of devotion 33:02 - The esoteric structure of Coleridge's “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” 33:34 - The cycle of insight 38:37 - Crisis, breakthrough, ordeal, union 43:38 - Unsettling themes 44:12 - Interventus Caninus 44:57 - What next after absolution? 45:33 - What is the point of the Abramelin Ritual? 46:46 - Reflecting on the ending of the film 49:39 - Crowley, Snell, Bloom, and Katz - those who attempted the Abramelin 49:54 - Mysterious history of the Abramelin Ritual 52:39 - Recensions of the Abramelin 53:56 - Duncan describes the Abramelin text and ritual 01:00:20 - Why does the Abramelin ritual have such a high failure rate? 01:02:12 - Meeting Lionel Snell 01:04:51 - A tarot reading and why history is an obstacle to real magick 01:06:53 - Daniel Ingram's revision of traditional fire kasina meditation 01:11:00 - Crowley's attempts at the Abramelin ritual 01:14:37 - Other accounts 01:16:40 - William Bloom's attempt 01:20:45 - Secret to success with the Abramelin Ritual 01:24:13 - How to increase the success rate of rituals 01:29:18 - Are you ready to attempt the Abramelin? 01:31:52 - Stream entry and Abramelin 01:34:35 - Duncan reflects on his past claims to attainment 01:37:16 - Questioning pragmatic dharma assumptions and the vogue of stream entry 01:41:00 - Insider vs outsider views 01:42:13 - Does magick really work? 01:43:31 - A story of powerful magickal effects … Watch previous episodes with Duncan Barford: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=barford To find our more about Duncan Barford, visit: - https://www.duncanbarford.uk/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - https://www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Hey Diabuddy thank you for listening to show, send me some positive vibes with your favorite part of this episode. In this episode, I sat down with Carrie Neher, who has been living with Type 1 diabetes since 1981 — long before CGMs, pumps, carb ratios, or even finger-stick meters were available. Diagnosed at 14 and hospitalized for two weeks, Carrie learned to manage diabetes in what she calls “the dark ages.”She shares what it was really like growing up using urine testing tablets, one daily shot of mixed insulin, and zero real-time glucose feedback — and the emotional weight that came with high A1Cs despite doing everything “right.

Send us a textWhat does it look like to wait with hope when the waiting stretches into years, decades, or feels altogether impossible? In this episode, I'm walking with you through the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth in Luke 1 — two righteous, faithful people who loved God, served Him, and still lived with unfulfilled prayers. Their story has been ministering to my heart in this season, especially as I look back on my own unexpected miracle: two years ago I was waiting for a husband, and I had no idea that God would bring Earl into my life in just five weeks… and that we would be engaged only twenty days after meeting. God loves to surprise us.Maybe you're waiting too. Waiting for a spouse. Waiting for a child. Waiting for provision. Waiting for healing. Waiting for community or a church home or a door that only God can open.Together, we'll look at Luke 1:11–13 and Psalm 130:5 and talk about what hopeful waiting really looks like:• Keep serving while you wait. Zechariah was simply doing his daily work when God broke in. Obedience in the ordinary creates space for miracles. • God loves to interrupt our waiting. His timing is never random, it's redemptive. • Believe God. Gabriel came straight from the presence of God to deliver a promise. God sees you too. • There is beauty in the process. God forms us, refines us, and prepares us in the waiting so that the miracle becomes His glory, not our striving.I'll also guide you through gentle reflection questions: What are you longing for? Where do you feel barren or overlooked? Are you still showing up in the “temple” of your everyday assignments? Can you trust that God's silence is not absence but preparation? We'll end with a prayer of hope and a blessing, asking Emmanuel to draw near and fill us with the kind of expectant faith that transforms us from the inside out.If this episode speaks to you, I'd love for you to join me in one of my creative healing courses — because healing often comes while we wait, especially when we create with God. You can explore Ashes to Bloom, Refreshing the Soul, Divine Creativity, and more through the link in my bio.God still speaks. And He is working in your waiting more than you know.
