Want less stress in love and more connection? Start by knowing your attachment style! In this snippet from Episode 201, Kelly sits down with relationship expert and best-selling author, Thais Gibson, to unpack attachment theory and how understanding your own style and the style of the people you care about can make relationships calmer and closer. Thais explains the four main attachment styles (secure, anxious, avoidant, dismissive avoidant and fearful avoidant) and shows how early formed patterns can linger as unconscious “relational clutter” that shapes how we ask for needs and respond to closeness. You will be encouraged to think about your own attachment style and you will learn how knowing your style can help you bring calm during moments of conflict. Plus, Thais and Kelly discuss a real conflict situation between two opposing styles to show how, by recognizing each person's needs, the situation can be alleviated and turned into connection. Be inspired to understand your attachment style and strengthen your connections with the people who matter most. Listen to the full discussion from Episode 201 here! What would your life look like if you embraced less, but gained more? In this one-on-one conversation, Kelly and Lauren explore the idea of “The Pursuit of Less But More.” Together, they reflect on the areas of life where simplifying has brought them greater meaning, such as less mental clutter and more peace, and the places where excess has come at a cost, like too much work and less time with loved ones. They also discuss the hidden toll of “more but less,” from overconsumption to burnout, and share what their recent summer experiences have taught them about the importance of slowing down. Plus, you will learn about their personal routines that help keep them aligned with minimalism, the lifestyle boundaries that have given them the greatest returns, and the areas they each hope to simplify further this year. Hey team! My guest this week is Dr. Ute Liersch, a Chartered Counselling and Coaching Psychologist with over a decade of clinical experience and author of A Minimalist's Guide to Becoming Resilient. Dr. Ute specializes in helping adults navigate anxiety, ADHD, and burnout. Her therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing from modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness-based therapies. Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Ute is an associate lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London, and holds a Fellowship in Higher Education. In our conversation, we explore the nervous system beyond the textbook fight-flight-freeze model, including how our nervous system shapes our mood, motivation, and even the way we see the world. Dr. Ute explains why so many of us with ADHD find that our sympathetic nervous system is permanently on edge and how we can work on rewiring that response. We also talk about perfectionism, attention types, and what resilience looks like in real life, breaking it down into actionable steps that fit into our schedules and ADHD brains. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at http://hackingyouradhd.com/240 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episode's Top Tips 1. Our parasympathetic nervous system can get stuck in a permanent state of “go time.” To help move our PNS back to a relaxed state, Dr. Ute suggests progressive muscle relaxation, where you are tensing and then releasing muscle groups one at a time so you can physically feel the shift from tension to ease. 2. Many of us have internalized the idea that there's something fundamentally wrong with the way we work, think, or exist. Dr. Ute suggests replacing this assumption of personal defect with curiosity: “If I weren't wrong, what would I need to feel safe?” This slight shift can open up room to problem-solve and tailor strategies to your actual needs. 3. We often talk about resilience like it's a fixed trait—you either “have it” or you don't. But Dr. Ute points out that resilience is about what you do, not what you are. It's built in small, repeatable actions that teach your nervous system and your mind how to recover from stressors. Resilience isn't about holding it together forever; it's about giving yourself enough space and recovery so you can keep going when you need it the most.
What if you could make your FOMO (fear of missing out) and FOBO (fear of better options) work for you instead of against you? In this Essential Series episode, Kelly revisits a conversation with international best-selling author, speaker, and venture capitalist Patrick J. McGinnis—the man who coined both terms. Together, they explore the complicated truth about FOMO and FOBO: how these feelings can drain our energy, fuel constant comparison, and even cause decision paralysis, but also how they can point us toward what truly matters. This is a snippet from episode 92, titled Overcome FOMO and FOBO, where Patrick shares insights from his book The Fear of Missing Out: Practical Decision-Making in a World of Overwhelming Choice, including practical tools to help you stress less, choose with confidence, and live more decisively. You'll learn about the surprising upside of FOMO, the hidden costs of hustle culture and decision fatigue, and how to break free from FOBO when a good option is already right in front of you. In this second part of last week's discussion, you will continue to learn about anxiety and be inspired to ease your feelings by paying closer attention to them. Kelly speaks with fellow Canadian minimalist, spoken word artist, musician, international best-selling author, and former elementary school teacher, the incredibly insightful Humble the Poet, to share insights from his latest book, Unanxious: 50 Simple Truths to Help Overthinkers Feel Less Stress and More Calm. As Humble shared in the first half of their discussion, anxiety isn't something we should try to eliminate, but something we should get curious about. In this second half, Humble explains how anxiety can also show up in positive moments, and how learning to sit with our feelings can build lasting resilience. Together, they explore how removing external stimulants can lower our baseline anxiety, and how recognizing our emotional triggers — including those rooted in childhood — can reveal where the real work lies. They also walk through relatable, everyday anxiety-inducing scenarios and share practical tools — from setting boundaries with ourselves and others to intentionally doing small, uncomfortable things to build emotional strength. Be inspired to see anxiety as a natural human signal, and feel motivated to improve your relationship with it so you can transform your life for the better. SynopsisYoung composers who came of age in the 1960s found themselves faced with a question: should they adopt the intellectually fashionable post-serial, atonal style of composition developed by Arnold Schoenberg's followers, or return to a more accessible and tonal musical language, neo-Romantic, neo-Classical, or Minimalist in nature? For American composer William Bolcom, who turned 20 in 1958, the first option was not appealing. “I had the credentials and the chops to write like that if I wanted to,” he said, “but I said ‘to hell with it.'”According to Bolcom's teacher and mentor, French composer Darius Milhaud, Bolcom was “as gifted as a monkey.” Bolcom was a fabulous pianist with a passion for American ragtime and popular song, and distinctly American elements and accents crop up in his compositions. Bolcom says he prefers to live, as he puts it, “in the cracks” between opera and musical theater, tonality and atonality, highbrow and lowbrow.Bolcom's chamber work, Five Fold Five, for example, premiered on today's date in 1987 at Saratoga Springs, New York, by pianist Dennis Russell Davies and the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet. The piece starts off flirting with atonal elements, but ends with something that sounds a lot like boogie-woogie.Music Played in Today's ProgramWilliam Bolcom (b. 1938): Five Fold Five; Detroit Chamber Winds; William Bolcom, pianoKoch 7395

If you are an overthinker who often feels anxious and stuck, this episode is for you! You will be encouraged to unlearn the idea that anxiety should be avoided. Instead, you'll be motivated to approach these feelings with curiosity for more ease. To lead this conversation, Kelly is joined by fellow Canadian minimalist, spoken word artist, musician, international best-selling author, and former elementary school teacher, the incredibly insightful, Humble the Poet, to share insights from his latest book, Unanxious: 50 Simple Truths to Help Overthinkers Feel Less Stress and More Calm. Humble has been featured in the New York Times, Buzzfeed, Vogue, Rolling Stone, and HuffPost, and his book has earned high praise, including from his friend and leading podcaster Jay Shetty, who writes, “Three pages in, you'll feel 1,000 lbs lighter.” In Unanxious, Humble shares how he once numbed his anxiety, and how getting curious about his triggers helped him let go of unhelpful coping patterns, embrace discomfort, and experience more peace. In this first part of Kelly and Humble's two-part discussion, Humble talks about the 90-day dopamine fast he undertook to reset his nervous system, the benefits of feeling emotions even when they're uncomfortable, and how minimalism can reveal (rather than erase) anxious thoughts, creating space for deeper self-awareness and reduced anxiety. Be inspired to stop avoiding and start embracing discomfort to ease anxiety and live more in alignment with your true self.
