This surprises many folks who I meet. There is a belief that being gay is a choice. I usually ask "did you choose to be straight?" That said I did not grow up as a minority. I chose to come out. But I did not grow up prepared to be a minority. In fact, I didn't even know a gay person when I came out!!! I discuss how this impacted me and turned me into an unsuspecting activist.
