Alaska is a land brimming with natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, coal, oil, salmon, and crab. Still, too often, outsiders have plundered these resources, enriching themselves and leaving Alaska and Alaskans with little to show for it. Alaska has had a “boom and bust” economy since the early 1900s, and no place exemplifies this economy better than Valdez. The aggressive Alaska Syndicate was formed in 1906 with backing from J.P. Morgan and the Guggenheim family, and its initial goal was to mine copper. However, soon the syndicate wanted all Alaska had to offer, including gold, coal, and salmon. It also fought to control rail and sea transportation in Alaska, and with powerful government connections and unlimited funds, it mostly got what it wanted. It needed a railroad to transport copper from its remote Kennecott mines to the ocean, then steamships to ferry it to southern ports. The syndicate chose to construct rail tracks from Kennecott to Cordova, and when rival builders began constructing a railroad from Valdez to Alaska's interior, a violent confrontation erupted, culminating in a shootout in Keystone Canyon. In September 2012, a quiet forest road in the French Alps became the scene of one of Europe's most baffling unsolved murders. Three members of the British French al Hilli family and a local cyclist were shot dead near the village of Chevaline, close to Lake Annecy. Miraculously, the couple's two young daughters survived, one hidden beneath her mother's body for eight hours before being discovered.More than a decade later, the so called Chevaline massacre remains a mystery. Investigators explored possible links to Saad al Hilli's Iraqi background, his professional work, family disputes and the possibility of a random attack. Yet despite years of inquiries, arrests and international attention, no one has been charged and no clear motive has emerged.Geoffrey and Molly Wansell examine the evidence, the theories and the unanswered questions behind this chilling case.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. H.W. Brands explains how, following the massacre in Poland, Roosevelt sought to modify the Neutrality Acts—laws passed in the mid-1930s specifically to prevent the types of economic and travel entanglements that had drawn the U.S.into World War I. Roosevelt argued that providing weapons to Britain and France would allow them to defend themselves, thereby keeping American troops out of the conflict. Lindbergh and anti-interventionist Senators like Burton Wheeler and Robert Borah remained deeply skeptical, believing Roosevelt was being "transactional" and dishonest about his true intent to lead the U.S. into a new European order. Roosevelt countered by attacking his critics early, using the word "isolation" like a "plague" and characterizing their views as well-meaning but ignorant. While some suggested Lindbergh as a potential 1940 Republican presidential candidate, he refused to enter politics, preferring to challenge the president through the airwaves. Roosevelt carefully shaped public opinion, fearing the type of backlash Woodrow Wilson faced for getting too far ahead of the populace. When France fell in just six weeks to the German Blitzkrieg in 1940, Lindbergh felt vindicated, arguing that American troops would have merely been trapped on the beaches. Meanwhile, Winston Churchill manipulated Roosevelt with warnings that a falling British government might surrender its fleet to Germany, successfully pressuring the president to send American destroyers to Britain. Nobody expected the second half of the cleric episode to begin with a discussion about wolves conducting hate crimes against coyotes, crows acting as aerial bounty hunters, and the lasting trauma of Game of Thrones season eight. Somehow this naturally transitioned into Pathfinder clerics, giant dragon towers, vampire bat transformations, and a godless revolutionary whose greatest enemy remains organized religion. In hindsight, this was probably the only possible outcome. Show Notes In the second half of our Pathfinder 2e Cleric build series, we advanced our morally questionable holy figures from level 11 all the way to 20. Before we even reached the introduction, however, we somehow found ourselves discussing wolf vendettas, crow conspiracies, Game of Thrones, British pronunciation crimes, and Pulp Fiction-inspired monologues. Naturally, this was exactly the kind of preparation required for high-level clerics. Randall returned with his godless anti-religious war priest, continuing his crusade to dismantle divine authority while simultaneously benefiting from divine magic. The contradictions only made the character stronger. Ash continued building a dragon-obsessed kobold servant of Dahak, leaning heavily into domains, summoning magic, and draconic heritage feats. Tyler doubled down on his undead survival machine, creating a cleric who would rather become increasingly horrifying than ever experience death again. As the builds progressed, the characters became increasingly absurd. Randall evolved into a social revolutionary capable of literally preaching atheism to enemies. Ash transformed into a majestic kobold empowered by dragons and armed with enough fire to solve nearly any problem. Tyler embraced his inner vampire, eventually turning into a bat, draining enemies, and becoming nearly impossible to kill. High-level spells stole much of the spotlight. Summoning dragons, collapsing enemies with Implosion, unleashing Massacre, and transforming into avatars of divine power all showcased just how spectacular Pathfinder's spellcasters become in the late game. Meanwhile, Randall's philosophy remained unchanged: peace is important, and anyone who disagrees can discuss it with the business end of a glaive. By the time we reached level 20, our collection of short kings had somehow become terrifying demigods. None of them were remotely good people, but they were certainly memorable clerics. Key Takeaways Levels 11 through 20 dramatically increase a cleric's power through doctrines, master spellcasting, and powerful class feats. High-rank divine spells provide some of the most cinematic effects in Pathfinder 2e. Harm-focused builds can become incredibly durable through self-healing and defensive feats. Domain spells continue to scale well into the highest levels of play. Heritage feats can dramatically shape a character's identity and capabilities. Avatar provides one of the most flavorful capstone spells available to divine casters. Additional 10th-rank spell slots are difficult to pass up at level 20. Warpriests gain survivability but still lag behind dedicated martial classes in weapon proficiency. Pathfinder 2e offers many ways to support unusual character concepts, including technically illegal godless clerics. Team Fun Size successfully evolved from weird clerics into full-blown nightmares for any GM. Welcome to the RPGBOT Podcast. On the afternoon of July 18, 1984, James Huberty left his apartment in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego, California, and drove one block over to the nearby McDonalds. After walking through the door of the restaurant, Huberty raised his Uzi semi-automatic 9mm and began indiscriminately shooting at patrons, employees, and anyone else who happened to cross into his line of sight. At the time, and for decades after, the San Ysidro McDonalds massacre was the worst mass shooting in American history, with the shooter killing twenty-one people and injuring nearly two dozen others before being struck down by a sniper's bullet. The incident lasted over an hour, during which time San Diego police and SWAT members surrounded the building, but didn't enter the building until an hour after the shooting started, when Huberty was already dead. We pay tribute to each and every one of them…and discover how a bereaved Mother refused to move from her home as she expected her son to come through the kitchen door one day. And we look into the story of the SS Officer, Kurt Meyer, who was held responsible for these murders. Who was he? Why was he released from a military prison after just 8 years and what happened when he returned home? And how did a Chestnut tree become the unmarked grave of some of these lads?

Would you recognize a serial killer if you rubbed elbows with him in a bar or if he struck up a conversation with you on a hiking trail? Maybe something about the person would set off alarm bells, especially if you found yourself alone with him. A sociopath or a psychopath can often present a charming demeanor, though, so most of us would never notice the predator in our midst. We might not realize the friendly stranger is a brutal murderer until we read the news the next day. Sources: “Fautenberry confesses to killing Juneau man.” June 18, 1991. Daily Sitka Sentinel. (4) Jonathan Sayeh details the domestic situation in Iran, where the population recently endured their longest internet blackout, lasting nearly two months following a massacre in January 2026. Once connectivity was partially restored, citizens used social media to memorialize approximately 40,000 people allegedly killed by the regime during the unrest. Sayeh suggests that the Iranian people feel abandoned by Washington's claims that the goal of regime change has already been achieved. Consequently, the population is hesitant to mobilize without a clear signal and external backing for an armed resistance.1511

On the morning of November 23, 2009, a convoy of vehicles wound through the highways of Maguindanao province in the southern Philippines. Inside were lawyers, political supporters, journalists, and the wife and family members of a man who simply wanted to run for governor. They had no reason to believe they wouldn't make it home by nightfall. But they never did. Armed men blocked the convoy on the highway, and herded the group to a nearby hilltop where several open graves had been dug up. Then, without warning, they opened fire. When it was over, 58 people were dead. Among them: 32 journalists and media workers, two lawyers, and six motorists who had simply been travelling the same road. It would become the single deadliest attack against journalists ever recorded, and one of the most brazen acts of political violence in modern history. Behind it all stood the Ampatuans a powerful clan whose private army had long operated in the shadows of state power, linked to killings, torture, abductions, and a culture of fear that had gone unchallenged for decades. This is a story about what happens when impunity becomes a way of life. About power so entrenched it believed itself untouchable. And about the long, gruelling decade-long fight to make it answer for what it did on a hillside in Maguindanao. Fifteen-year-old Nicholas Browning was bright, polite, and dependable, a Boy Scout, a good student, the kind of teenager parents trusted without question. But on a cold February night in 2008, that image would shatter forever. After being dropped off for what should have been an ordinary sleepover with friends, Nick returned home the next morning to a nightmare scene: his parents, John and Tamara Browning, and his two younger brothers, Benjamin and Gregory, had all been brutally murdered. What investigators uncovered next would shock an entire community and reveal a darkness hiding behind the facade of an all-American family. This week, we're heading deep into the Alaskan wilderness to cover one of the most chilling mass murders in the state's history — the 1983 McCarthy massacre. McCarthy wasn't just remote… it was practically off the grid entirely. A tiny community tucked inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park where residents crossed icy rivers by hand-powered tram, recognized each other by boot prints in the snow, and gathered every Tuesday for the biggest event of the week: mail day. But on March 1st, 1983, that quiet tradition turned into absolute horror. A man named Louis Hastings arrived with a rifle, a plan, and a terrifying mission that would leave six people dead, two more wounded, and an entire community permanently shattered. And somehow, the motive behind it all is even more unbelievable than the crime itself. This case has isolation, survival stories, a real-life sniper hunt in the snow, and one of the strangest murder plots we've ever covered. Sponsors:

He had a documented history of erratic behavior, including delusions that Taylor Swift was stalking him, as well as a 2017 arrest in Washington, D.C., after attempting to breach White House security. That incident led to his arrest and the confiscation of his firearms, weapons that were later returned to his father and ultimately given back to him.  This devastating case is not just about the horror of that night, but about the warning signs that preceded it, and the dangerous intersection of mental illness, access to assault-style weapons, and systemic failure. Following the 1943 discovery of the Katyn Forest massacre, where the Soviets executed thousands of Polish officers, FDR and Churchill knowingly supported the Soviet lie blaming the Nazis to preserve the alliance. Stalin used this event as a strategic lever to break off relations with the Polish exile government in London. Sean McMeekin explains that this maneuver allowed Stalin to isolate moderate Polish patriots and clear the path for the installation of communist puppets. By endorsing the lie, the Allies effectively facilitated Stalin's goal of dominating Poland's political future and destroying any viable alternative to Soviet-backed rule. (5/8)UNDATED BAKU
