John Pemberton Gatewood was a notorious Confederate bushwhacker/guerrilla leader. Born in Fentress County, Tennessee, in 1844, Gatewood's life took a dark turn after a Union attack on his family led him to abandon the Confederate army and become a guerrilla fighter. Leading his own unit in north Georgia and known as the long-haired, red-bearded beast, Gatewood was driven by his thirst for revenge after the brutal assault on his family. John Pemberton Gatewood, a figure whose story is another one of the Stories of Appalachia. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'30 “‘No, father Abraham,' he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'”

On October 1, 2017, Mary Jo von Tillow's world changed forever. Her husband, Kurt, was killed in the Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting in Las Vegas, the deadliest in U.S. history. In just eleven minutes, her life—and the lives of thousands of others—were shattered. But what followed was more than grief. Out of devastation came unexpected bonds with other survivors, advocates, and families who knew the same kind of loss. From a 9/11 firefighter who turned his pain into kindness, to a victims' rights attorney who changed national law, to fellow widows and survivors who refused to give up, Mary Jo discovered what it means to carry tragedy together. The Las Vegas Massacre Connections is both a deeply personal account and a collective portrait of resilience. Through Mark Gray's in-depth reporting and Mary Jo's courage to share her story, this book captures the enduring impact of Route 91 and the human strength that rises after unimaginable loss.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Christmas Day is meant for warmth, family, and celebration — but in 1929, it became the backdrop for one of the most chilling family tragedies in American history. After sharing a holiday meal, Charlie Lawson murdered his wife and children in an act so brutal and senseless that the community was left paralyzed with grief and disbelief. Shotguns, rifles, and blunt-force trauma marked the scene inside the Lawson home. Neighbors and law enforcement were stunned not only by the violence, but by the absence of any clear motive. Why would a husband and father destroy the very family he once appeared to protect? What darkness erupted inside Charlie Lawson that cold Christmas afternoon? Nearly a century later, the questions remain. Rumors, theories, and whispered explanations have circulated for generations — from personal demons to the possibility of something far more sinister influencing his final decisions. In this episode of The Grave Talks, we explore the tragic events of Christmas 1929, the lives lost, and the lingering mystery surrounding what compelled Charlie Lawson to unleash such horror. Some tragedies fade with time. Rusk; "shoot to kill" orders; Cpt. Treaumer muttering "halt" orders under his breath; the N. Chi Rolling Mills into Illinois Steel Company and then rolled up into US Steel come J.P. Morgan's Carnegie and otherwise monopolistic consolidation; Kosciusko Militia; FOTLU and Gomper's feud with the Knights of Labor; the labor significance of the phrase "amalgamated" (formed of individual craft unions) and what this says about ST protagonist Hicks McTaggart's work as strikebreaking PI for UNamalgamated Ops; Pynchon gets real Hobsbawmian, Gramscian, and Adamic-ian with it; "Haymarket FRAME-UP job"; explicitly references Bay View and Rolling Mills; Debs Rebellion; Pullman Strike; Henry Clay Frick nearly merc-ed by Berkman; the Gov. Steunenberg dynamiting; Big Bill Haywood's framing close shave; James McParland; Harry Orchard's confessions under duress; Pinkerton's; more US Steel; Mine Owners Association; Clarence Darrow; WFM; Wobblies; the McNamara Affair, the LA Times Building Bombing, and brothers J.J. and J.B.; surprise guilty pleas kneecapping the Job Harriman socialist mayoral candidacy in LA; spies catch Darrow bribing jurors?; Propaganda of the Deed comes to Milwaukee... or maybe not; the Italian Evangelical Church; ex-Catholic priest Rev. August Giuliani, MPD and BOI/DOJ informant; rabble rousing in the Third Ward, singing jingoistic songs, proselytizing to Catholics (which they didn't take kindly to from an apostate priest cum Protestant), and offering to pay for any anti-war anarchists or leftists of varying stripes' return tickets to the boot of Italy, all painting a picture of the gadfly pastor acting on behalf of federal law enforcement and local business interests with his troublemaking in the Ward; faced down by anarchists like Maria Nardini; the Bay View Riots, multiple Italian immigrant residents of Cream City killed by officers of the law with false flag violence (Antonio Fornasier and August Marinelli killed in the fray); the Milwaukee Station House Bombing of 1917; the comedy of errors; single deadliest day for law enforcement in American history up until 9/11; the curious lag in MPD response to the bomb's arrival at Giuliani's church; the claim the IMOPIO or infernal machine was anarchist made being sourced from BOI agent Julius Brown and possibly a Milwaukee congressman by way of MPD Capt. John T. Sullivan; the Galleanisti, followers of anarcho-communist Deed-Propagandist and advocate of various nitroglycerin and lead means for affecting change, squarely in the crosshairs; and much much more, breadcrumb trails we'll resume tracing next time.

Noam Weissman talks with journalist and author Yardena Schwartz about her book Ghosts of a Holy War and how the 1929 Hebron massacre helped ignite the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They trace the century-long thread of the cry “Al-Aqsa is in danger”—how Grand Mufti Hajj Amin al-Husseini weaponized it in 1929, tied it to his alliance with Nazi Germany, and how those myths continue to fuel violence from the Hebron riots to the Second Intifada to Hamas's “Al-Aqsa Flood.” Along the way, they explore Hebron's sacred place in Jewish history, the trauma of 1929, the rise of the settlement movement, the Jewish underground's plan to bomb the Dome of the Rock, and Baruch Goldstein's 1994 attack. They end in present-day Hebron—H1 and H2—meeting Palestinians and Israelis who still believe a different future is possible. His name was Metacom, a son of the Wampanoag chief Massasoit who had greeted the Pilgrims at Plymouth. Metacom would become known as King Philip, and the war that would carry his name was one of the bloodiest in American history. In 1675-76, Native peoples across southern New England battled English colonists and their Indian allies in genocidal violence. Massacres, torture, and enslavement were commonplace, yet King Philip's War is little known to most Americans today. Historian David Silverman is here to bring this American origin story to light. 6/8. The Great Slaughter: Audubon's Regret and the Lewis and Clark Grizzly Massacre — Dan Flores — The opening of the American West initiated an unprecedented destruction of animal populations. Flores documents that John James Audubon, while initially killing wildlife subjects for his ornithological artwork, eventually expressed profound regret regarding the systematic destruction of mammals including buffalo herds. Flores notes that the Lewis and Clark Expedition mirrored prevailing colonial attitudes; Meriwether Lewis permitted subordinates to transform grizzly bearhunting into recreational sport, resulting in at least half of the 37 encountered bears being killed without apparent practical justification, representing callous wastage of irreplaceable fauna.
Six months removed from "The Summer of Love", the United States was a powder keg of change, violence, courage, and citizens fighting for their beliefs. South Carolina was no different and in the town of Orangeburg, students from the then South Carolina State College voiced their displeasures of wrong doings in the community. A week of tumult, unrest, and violence all culminated on the night of February 8, 1968 on the campus lawn.
A burst of gunfire on a quiet November night. Two lives lost, more injured and an icon gay bar turned crime scene forever. On November 19, 1980, 38-year-old ex-transit cop Ronald K. Crumpley opened fire on patrons entering RAMROD, a beloved gay leather bar in Greenwich Village. What began as a night out ended in chaos. People ducked behind parked cars, others ran but two men, Vernon Kroening and Jörg Wenz, were killed, and many more wounded. In this episode of our LGBTQ+ true crime podcast we trace the horror of that massacre, the homophobia and mental illness behind it, and the ripple effect it had in a community already living in the shadows. We explore how a single act of hatred cracked open the illusion of safety for queer New Yorkers and why that reckoning still echoes today.Hosted by Jordi and Brad, Beers With Queers brings chilling crimes, queer stories, and twisted justice to light with a cold one in hand. Press play, grab a drink, and join us as we uncover the darkest corners of LGBTQ+ history. To sign our online petition to have a memorial or plaque added to the building that once was the RAMROD please visit: https://c.org/L6QfmV4Q6N

Host Joe DeMare talks about being grateful for water and snow, and how even though Ohio is having a cold snap, the northern parts of the globe are having temperatures 20 degrees and more above normal. Next he interviews Cathy Cowan Becker about the AEP's insidious plan to slip in a rule change that would eliminate solar power net metering! By putting the rule change in place during Thanksgiving vacation, they escaped any media attention and only a heroic last minute effort by activists mounted any kind of challenge. Rebecca Wood talks about the Detroit River. Ecological News includes record Amtrak ridership, the RCMP arresting old growth defenders, and the nuclear industry's attack on the government of Ukraine.

This Black Friday, Cutting Deep into Horror takes you back to where modern terror truly began: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). Hosts Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfi break down Tobe Hooper's legendary shocker — a film that reshaped horror with its brutal realism, suffocating Texas heat, and one of cinema's most terrifying families.Perfect for the Thanksgiving weekend, this episode explores how the movie's themes of family dysfunction, meat, ritual, survival, and rural dread hit especially hard during a holiday built around gathering and feasting. Henrique and Rachael examine the film's relentless pacing, groundbreaking sound design, and the cultural fears it tapped into — from urban-vs-rural anxiety to the collapse of safety in everyday America. They also dive into the chaotic production history, the cast's nightmare experiences, the infamous mob-linked distributor, and how Leatherface's legacy became an unexpected symbol of American horror. Whether you're recovering from turkey dinner or Black Friday chaos, this is the perfect way to lean deeper into seasonal fear.Inside this episodeThe Road Trip to Hell — How a simple drive and a cemetery visit turn into a descent toward madness. The Hitchhiker's Warning — Chaos arrives early, reshaping the tone and danger instantly. The House of Horrors — Bone art, slaughter rooms, and why the décor hits the deepest nerves.Sally Hardesty's Ordeal — A masterclass in survival horror, trauma, and sensory overload.Dinner With the Family — A disturbing, iconic sequence that redefined psychological horror.Production Hell — Sweat, heat, real injuries, and the grueling on-set reality behind the film's authenticity. Why TCM Still Terrifies — Minimalist brutality, stark realism, and cultural impact that still resonates.Thanksgiving & Horror — Why TCM unexpectedly fits the season of big meals and bigger family tension.Where to Watch The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (U.S.):Netflix – subscription

(The Hollywood Reporter) When to serve Thanksgiving dinner … Martha Stewart has spoken, and she says Thanksgiving dinner should officially be served at 2 p.m. She claims it keeps people from hovering in the kitchen all morning like starving vultures and helps the whole day flow better. You eat early, hang out, watch football, play games, and still have room for dessert later on. And if you get hungry again at night? Bring out the leftovers for Round Two. Who are we to argue with Martha?Retro gamer beer glass … The old school gaming company Atari just dropped something that's both nostalgic and completely unnecessary — a beer glass stamped with the retro 3D Atari logo. The glass holds 20 ounces, comes with a comfy handle — and isn't cheap. This thing clocks in at $35, which might be a high price for a beer glass, but a bargain when you consider all the memories formed playing Atari games back in the day.MOVING ON INTO MOVIE NEWS:Tara Reid says she was at a hotel outside of Chicago early Sunday morning when somebody slipped a drug in her drink. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUgY5o27jt0 Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the next installment of The Exorcist from writer-director Mike Flanagan. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/scarlett-johansson-exorcist-horror-movie-mike-flanagan-1236434673/#recipient_hashed=b92941641788d15805f03b377d572994d12bdade7478975c93d0143007f01373&recipient_salt=e829000bb0b218c27fbd0c12f4a38481876a8ab041cc990efde89259509b9611&utm_medium=email&utm_source=exacttarget&utm_campaign=Breaking%20News&utm_content=648608_11-24-2025&utm_term=56896?utm_medium=email&utm_source=exacttarget&utm_campaign=1764020721-Breaking+News&utm_content=648608_11-24-2025&utm_id=648608· It's been a big year for Jonathan Bailey. https://people.com/people-sexiest-man-alive-jonathan-bailey-highest-grossing-box-office-star-2025-11855685?taid=69248e272b51bd0001bd718f&utm_campaign=peoplemagazine&utm_content=new&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com AND FINALLY"Variety" put together a list of the 100 best comedy movies of all time. This week, we're revisiting one of the most overlooked yet consequential chapters in the Arab–Israeli conflict: the 1929 Hebron Massacre. In just two days, 67 Jews were murdered and an ancient community was destroyed—all sparked by a lie about Jewish plans to take over Al-Aqsa, a false rumor whose fear and fury have echoed for generations. Understanding this story is essential to understanding the region itself. We're re-releasing this episode now because next week, Noam sits down with journalist and author Yardena Schwartz, author of Ghosts of a Holy War, to explore Hebron's past and present, and how the mythology surrounding Al-Aqsa continues to shape the conflict in profound ways. This episode, first released in Season 3, is generously sponsored by Liz and Moshe Neiman. To sponsor an episode or to be in touch, please email noam@unpacked.media. Learn that the idea of gratitude and giving thanks is an ancient concept for mankind and is expressly elevated in the Bible.Review how days of thanksgiving were originally commemorated in the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts, with the English dissenters, the Pilgrims, having the most influential celebrations. In the colonial era, Thanksgiving celebrations were centered on specific events and circumstances and accordingly occurred at different times. As Americans united against British tyranny, they made continental-wide proclamations through the Continental Congress, but again, they were tied to specific events and times.President George Washington issued the first two Thanksgiving Proclamations under the Constitution.Sarah Josepha Hale's drive to create a uniform, nationwide celebration was embraced by Lincoln and his successors, and it became firmly fixed to the Fourth Thursday of November under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.Feasts, running, football, parades, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday all flow from this powerful day of gratitude.Highlights include the Bible, Thessalonians 5:16-18, Colossians 2:7, Psalm 100:4, Colossians 4:2, Psalm 92, Philippians 4:6, King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth Anne Boleyn, Church of England, John Calvin, Puritans, Common Book of Prayers, King James I, Pilgrims, Mayflower, Plymouth England, Plymouth Harbor Massachusetts, Mayflower Compact, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Samoset, Squanto, Wampanoag, William Bedford, Thanksgiving commemoration, Melanie Kirkpatrick, Thanksgiving The Holiday at the Heart of the American Experience, William Bradford, Berkeley Plantation a/k/a Berkeley Hundred, The Margaret, John Woodlief, Jamestown, the Starving Time, Chief Opechancanough, Massacre of 1622, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New Amsterdam, First Continental Congress, Second Continental Congress, Day of Humiliation Fasting and Prayer (1776), Henry Laurens, Thanksgiving Day Proclamation (1777), Battle of Saratoga, Thomas McKean, Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer (December 18, 1781), George Washington, James Madison, Elias Boudinot, Aedanus Burke, Thomas Tudor Tucker, Federalist Party, Anti-Federalists, Peter Silvester, Roger Sherman, Articles of Confederation, Continental Association, Constitution, William Samuel Johnson, Ralph Izard, Washington Thanksgiving Day Proclamation (October 3, 1789 for November 26, 1789), Whiskey Rebellion, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Letter, James Madison, First Amendment, War of 1812, Abraham Lincoln, Sarah Josepha Hale, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Northwood: A Tale of New England, Vassar College, domestic science, Ladies' Magazine, Godey's Lady's Book, Civil War, William Seward, Andrew Johnson, Lincoln Thanksgiving Proclamation (October 3, 1863 and October 24, 1864), President Franklin Delano Roosevelt a/k/a FDR, National Retail Dry Goods Association, Franksgiving, Allen Treadway, Earl Michener, FDR Thanksgiving Speech (1938), President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Johnson Thanksgiving Speech (1963), President John F. On April 7, 2021, a man showed up to a property in Rock Hill, South Carolina and took the lives of six people. Robert and Barbara Lesslie had been taking care of their grandchildren, Noah and Adah, when former NFL player Phillip Adams shot them to death. He also killed two HVAC workers on the property, James Lewis and Robert Shook. Adams' actions have been attributed to the head trauma from his time playing football - and after his death, he was diagnosed with Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly referred to as CTE, and it is believed this is what lead to his actions.
