On the afternoon of July 18, 1984, James Huberty left his apartment in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego, California, and drove one block over to the nearby McDonalds. After walking through the door of the restaurant, Huberty raised his Uzi semi-automatic 9mm and began indiscriminately shooting at patrons, employees, and anyone else who happened to cross into his line of sight. At the time, and for decades after, the San Ysidro McDonalds massacre was the worst mass shooting in American history, with the shooter killing twenty-one people and injuring nearly two dozen others before being struck down by a sniper's bullet. The incident lasted over an hour, during which time San Diego police and SWAT members surrounded the building, but didn't enter the building until an hour after the shooting started, when Huberty was already dead. In that year Zionist militias commenced a systematic assault on Palestinian towns and villages creating fear and displacement. Massacres occurred daily and in a short time 800,000 Palestinians became refugees in their own place. The Nakba is ongoing. It is taking place now in the west Bank, in Lebanon and in the Gaza Strip.Fianna Fáil – A centenary of failureLast Saturday the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis in Dublin marked the centenary of that party. At its foundation in 1926 meeting it was agreed that the party would be titled ‘Fianna Fáil – The Republican Party.'Its principal aim was defined as ‘Securing the political independence of a United Ireland as a republic.'That was the basis on which Fianna Fáil first entered government in 1932. But in the decades to follow nothing was done to advance that aim. On April 22, 2018, a partially naked young man named Travis Reinking opened fire with an AR-15 rifle at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee, killing four innocent people and injuring others. He had a documented history of erratic behavior, including delusions that Taylor Swift was stalking him, as well as a 2017 arrest in Washington, D.C., after attempting to breach White House security. I am always intrigued by people who can't seem to color inside the lines. Most of us are law-abiding citizens. We might get a traffic ticket occasionally or march in protest against a law or action we think is wrong, but we usually play by the rules. Then there are those who skirt the law at every opportunity. The worst of these are sociopaths, and I've written about several who were serial killers. John Martin III committed at least one despicable crime, but most of the time, he just seemed to follow a difficult path through life, doing things many of us would describe as “crazy.” He likely had a mental illness, and I doubt many were surprised when he met with a violent end. Following the 1943 discovery of the Katyn Forest massacre, where the Soviets executed thousands of Polish officers, FDR and Churchill knowingly supported the Soviet lie blaming the Nazis to preserve the alliance. Stalin used this event as a strategic lever to break off relations with the Polish exile government in London.
