    How to Decorate
Ep. 477: Alex Kaehler's new book, A Welcoming Home

    How to Decorate

Welcome back to How to Decorate! Today, we are joined by returning guest and Chicago-based interior designer Alexandra Kaehler. She recently published her highly anticipated debut book, A Welcome Home: Inviting Interiors, which features eight stunning homes designed for young families. Alexandra shares the behind-the-scenes process of writing her book, designing for her bold sister, and why every room doesn't need to serve every function. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Embrace Patterned Upholstery: A patterned sofa or sectional acts as natural camouflage for spills, making it perfect for families with kids or dogs. Patterned upholstery can also serve as the central statement piece in a small room that might otherwise feel flat. You Don't Always Need Drapery: Sometimes skipping window treatments altogether allows strong architecture and beautiful windows to shine. This edit can prevent a room from feeling overly stuffy or sweet. Ground Sweet Patterns with Bold Colors: If you use a delicate or sweet wallpaper, pair it with a bold, unexpected color—like an eggplant leather banquette—to keep the space from feeling too juvenile or formal. Balance Heirloom Dining Sets: A full matching antique dining set (table, chairs, buffet, and corner cabinet) can quickly feel stuffy. Counterbalance the formality by wrapping the room in a vibrant, tropical mural wallpaper to inject lightheartedness. Design for Your Reality: If you don't actually cook or entertain large crowds, don't design a massive open-concept chef's kitchen. Build the house for how your family actually lives, even if that means a closed-off galley kitchen with polished marble and an antique oil painting hung over the sink. Protect the "Destination" Room: Dedicate at least one cozy room, like a formal living room with a fireplace, to be completely TV-free. This creates a designated destination for gathering, reading, and conversation. What You'll Hear on This Episode: 01:02 Alexandra discusses the two-year waiting process of publishing her first book and the joy of returning to design storytelling. 10:10 Designing her sister's house: Navigating a "more is more" aesthetic and fully committing to a pattern-drenched primary bedroom. 21:47 The 1920s Arts and Crafts bungalow project featuring whimsical saturated colors, a purple banquette, and a bold yellow butler's pantry. 35:49 Designing a closed-off, aesthetic-driven galley kitchen for a family that unapologetically does not cook. 46:30 Alexandra's own home renovations, the importance of floor-to-ceiling windows, and why she loves a formal living room. 54:24 The clever, double-sided hidden TV Alexandra's husband requested for their kitchen and screened porch. 01:02:05 Why Alexandra specifically chose to design her book without a fussy dust jacket. In that paper, these two deep state lifetime operatives lay out the concept of cognitive infiltration which intentionally attempts to derail and delegitimize movements that want to know the truth about government operations. Given my recent work on Adrien Vermeule (see Christianity as Controlled Opposition through Cognitive Infiltration on Apple Podcasts or Substack) who is taking this concept one step further, I'd say this topic is as timely as ever. The Yankees' decision to dump Camilo Doval becomes a brutal reminder that trade deadline excitement can age terribly. Evan Roberts and Shaun Morash replay their euphoric reaction to last year's deal, admit they had no idea how badly it would fail, and credit Brian Cashman for moving on instead of doubling down on a mistake. As the Yankees wait for more help after adding Luis Garcia Jr., the Mets begin their painful sell-off. Evan calls it a necessary but dark day, refusing to pretend that a collection of unfamiliar prospects is immediately exciting. The returns may become valuable lottery tickets, but for now they only underline how far the Mets have fallen.

This week on the MMA History Podcast episode 341, hosts Joey Venti and the MMA Detective Mike Davis sit down with two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, Hollywood stuntman and actor Frank Trigg for a raw, unfiltered look at the chaotic early days of mixed martial arts. Trigg shares how he coached a talented high school wrestler named Kid Yamamoto in Phoenix before the Japanese star became a Pride FC standout, the real reasons Yamamoto was deported, and the explosive behind-the-scenes fallout from the infamous Rickson Gracie versus Rico Chiapparelli showdown that got Chiapparelli uninvited from major grappling circles. From his time with Real American Wrestling alongside the likes of Randy Couture and Dan Henderson, the first Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament against Renzo Gracie, early Japan promotions including Vale Tudo Japan against Jean Jacques Machado, Pride Bushido commentating, and the cutthroat realities of 1990s fight money and worked matches, Trigg delivers stories and details few others have ever heard. Happy Mindful Monday! In this week's episode, our host Allie Brooke sits down with Hana Malhas. Hana is a professional singer-songwriter and a startup CFO. The combination sounds unusual until you hear her talk about why one made her better at the other. She has released multiple albums, performed across several countries, and founded BalaFeesh, a live music platform based in Jordan, showcasing independent Arab artists. She also holds an MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business and a track record of leading finance for startups in creative and media industries. Hana understands intellectual property the way most CFOs never will, not as a line item, but as someone who has lived inside the process of making it. She watched the music industry get turned upside down by streaming, and recognizes the same inflection point happening now in publishing. That's why she co-founded Sinai.ai, to bring AI into the world of books in a way that respects authors, protects rights-holders, and creates sustainable new revenue for the publishing industry. But at its core, she built it for the reader who used to get lost in books the way you get lost in a great song, and wants that feeling back. Because as reading evolves, she believes we shouldn't have to choose between what's new and what matters: the craft, the legacy, and the human intimacy of books.   Episode Topics How the creative process of songwriting mirrors the strategic process of financial modeling. The emotional and financial reality of intellectual property (IP) from an artist's perspective. Lessons learned from the music streaming revolution and how they apply to the current AI inflection point in publishing. Moving past the static page: What is an aiBook™ and why is it distinct from a chatbot or a summary app? How interactive reading enhances comprehension, retention, and human connection to text. Can a marriage truly heal after betrayal or severe disconnect? On this episode of Married and Connected, host Kameran Al-Areqi is joined by psychologist, coach, and author Dr. Bruce Chalmer, who brings over 30 years of clinical wisdom helping couples navigate being stuck, infidelity, and relational crisis.Together, they dive into Dr. Chalmer's core philosophy: "Be kind, don't panic, and have faith." They expose why standard "communication rules" (like strict I-statements) often fail when couples are in a panic, how condescension and self-doubt undermine intimacy, and how to practice true forgiveness as an "inside job." Plus, Dr. Chalmer shares his framework for discernment—helping couples navigate whether to stay together, work through deal breakers, or walk away.

Welcome to The DMF — Discovering Meaning in Film and Acting. I'm Justin Younts, and this is part 2 of my conversation with acting coach Mel Mack.Mel and I get into the biggest obstacle she sees actors running into right now, especially since the pandemic and the rise of social media: misinformation and self-doubt. She's watched actors get talked out of their own confidence by comments from people who don't actually know what they're talking about, and we talk about why doing your homework on who you're learning from matters as much as any class you'll take.We also dig into why so many actors set goals that are too small, and why Mel pushes the actors she coaches to think bigger and get specific about what they want. From there we get practical: networking with actual purpose instead of just collecting contacts, the preparation and mindset it takes to walk onto a set or into an audition room ready, and why the perfectionism trap so many actors fall into with self-tapes works against them instead of for them. Mel also breaks down why training never really stops, no matter how far along you are.If you've ever felt like the industry was talking you out of your own confidence, this conversation is for you.In this episode we discuss:The biggest obstacle facing actors today: misinformation and self-doubtWhy Mel coaches actors to set bold, specific career goals instead of small onesNetworking with purpose and building real fans in the industryPreparation, adaptability, and staying present in the sceneSelf-tapes and the perfectionism trapWhy actors have to keep training, no matter where they are in their careerWhat actually happens on a film set, and how to prepare for itUnderstanding direction and staying presentGoing off book and training consistentlyStaying the course without shortcutsBringing newness and wonder to every sceneGuest: Mel Mack, acting coach and author of 101 Acting Tips Mel Mack Acting Studio: https://melmackactingstudio.com/Timestamps: 00:00:00 - The Biggest Obstacle Facing Actors Today 00:02:21 - Setting Bold, Specific Career Goals 00:04:54 - Networking with Purpose and Building Industry Fans 00:07:01 - Preparation, Adaptability, and Staying in the Scene 00:10:05 - Self-Tapes and the Perfectionism Trap 00:12:23 - Why Actors Must Keep Training 00:14:31 - Preparing Actors for the Reality of a Film Set 00:15:18 - Understanding Direction and Staying Present 00:17:26 - Going Off Book and Training Consistently 00:20:12 - Staying the Course Without Shortcuts 00:21:14 - Bringing Newness and Wonder to Every Scene#Acting #ActingCoach #ActingTips #ActingCareer #AuditionTips #SelfTape #ActingStudio #Hollywood #Podcast

What do we do when the ground is unstable and information is incomplete? We are told to wait for the right conditions. But what if waiting costs more than acting? The real risk is failing to achieve your purpose.Welcome to Pharma Minds, Summer Series "Executing differently takes courage". I chose this specific conversation because Marc is the one who speaks best about what execution requires when the context refuses to stabilize. Through his experience, I wanted to explore what it concretely costs to actually do what you said you would do. His answer is very simple: we trust the ground and move forward. It reveals that accepting certain departures, stopping certain projects, and changing directions are the necessary costs of executing with integrity. Marc Gailhardou (who has since been appointed President Intercontinental Region at MSD) brings this perspective from his role leading the EEMEA zone for MSD, while also serving on the board of the digital health startup The Resilience in Oncology. Tasked with managing a geographical area consisting of 25 percent of the world's population, his impossible context is one of permanent volatility. From maintaining operations across war zones to meeting the demands of emerging economies, he proves that long-term vision requires immediate, bold action. In this episode, we cover:◾️Leading Through Volatility : Managing safety, compliance, and operations across the diverse EEMEA region.◾️The Appetite for the Future : Why high-growth markets embrace bold strategies while mature markets hesitate.◾️Career as a Marathon : Moving out of your comfort zone, creating options, and knowing when it is time to transition.◾️Corporate to Startup : Gaining agility, speed, and new perspectives through board roles at organizations like The Resilience in Oncology.◾️Clarity Over Brutality : Focusing on the task rather than attacking the person to lead with respect.Execution without stability is rarely comfortable. It demands hard choices and decisive momentum. Clarity wins over caution every time.

Reality is defined as the state of things as they actually exist, encompassing all observable facts, events, and entities. It represents the totality of what exists independent of human perception, imagination, or theoretical speculation. Ultimately, reality exists objectively, independent of conscious observation or belief. Humans perceive objective reality via subjective filters. Since our senses and brains distort input, we can never see the world "as it objectively is."

The Slender Man began as two photographs and a caption, submitted to an internet forum in 2009 as nothing more than a creepy image contest. The figure in it had no face, arms too long for its body, and a caption written like a piece of found history. Within a few years, that figure had a name recognized across the internet, a following that treated the images as more than fiction, and a reputation for turning up in places far stranger than a photo contest ever intended.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = The Foreboding00:02:02.673 = Show Open00:03:13.025 = Slenderman: Blurring The Lines of Reality, Part 100:09:24.860 = Slenderman: Blurring The Lines of Reality, Part 2 ***00:22:48.484 = Slenderman: Blurring The Lines of Reality, Part 3 ***00:34:59.166 = Slenderman: Blurring The Lines of Reality, Part 4 ***00:41:57.606 = Slenderman: Blurring The Lines of Reality, Part 5 ***00:54:09.889 = Show Close*** = Begins immediately after inserted ad breakLISTEN ON PODCAST APPS: Look for this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, and other podcast apps. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: March, 2022This episode of Weird Darkness traces the Slender Man from an internet photo contest into real-world stabbings, arson, and a wave of suicides on a South Dakota reservation, then weighs whether an invented internet legend can, in some sense, become real.It opens with the character's exact origin: on June 10th, 2009, Eric Knudsen, posting under the name Victor Surge on the forum Something Awful, submitted two doctored photographs as part of a contest to create convincing paranormal images. Each carried a caption inventing a backstory, one referencing a photographer "presumed dead" in 1983 and another tying the figure to a fire at the Stirling City Library and the disappearance of a photographer named Mary Thomas in 1986. The figure in both images, faceless and unnaturally tall with elongated arms, spread across the internet within days and took on the name Slender Man, along with a folklore of his own: a preference for woods and abandoned buildings, the ability to travel at will, and warning signs that included nosebleeds, nightmares, and sudden paranoia. From there, the episode turns to the Waukesha stabbing of May 31st, 2014, in Wisconsin, when twelve-year-old Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser led their friend Payton Leutner into nearby woods and stabbed her nineteen times, telling investigators the attack was meant to prove Slender Man's existence and make them his "proxies." Leutner survived and crawled to a roadside where a cyclist found her. Geyser was sentenced to forty years to life and remains held in a psychiatric facility; Weier, sentenced to twenty-five years to life, was released from institutional care in the summer of 2021 and placed under supervision.Next, the episode covers the string of incidents that followed within months: a thirteen-year-old girl's knife attack on her mother in Hamilton County, Ohio, in June 2014; a Las Vegas shooting in which the gunman, who reportedly dressed as Slender Man, killed two police officers and a bystander before killing his wife and himself; and a house fire set by a fourteen-year-old girl in Port Richey, Florida, in September 2014, who told police she had "been reading a lot" about the character online. It also details a separate wave of youth suicides on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation between late 2014 and mid-2015, which the New York Times reported topped one hundred in six months, some tied by officials to the Slender Man and to a local legend of a "suicide spirit" known as Walking Sam or the Tall Man, and a mass hanging attempt in nearby woods that a local pastor, John Two Bulls, intervened to stop. The episode also relays an account researcher Nick Redfern collected from a Pennsylvania flight attendant trainee named Lacy, who said her laptop began displaying Slender Man's face and, on one occasion, a voice, after she read Robin Swope's book Slenderman: From Fiction to Fact in 2016.The episode closes by comparing Slender Man to Spring-Heeled Jack, a figure reported across Victorian England from the 1830s onward and long suspected of being one person's stunt copied by others in later decades, before turning to researcher Peter McCue's Psychic Internet Theory and the ancient Egyptian god Ptah, weighing whether shared belief circulated across the internet might account for why so many people came to treat a fictional character as something they could encounter.

The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast

This is the podcast where you, the listeners, send us your questions, and we, the hosts, discuss them together. We don't see the questions until we hit record though.Clodagh, from Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland asks  - “What lessons, if any, can humans gain and learn from observing the forces that drive bird murmurations, clouds of birds like Starlings coming into roost, or wading birds on mud flats?”Stuart believes humans naturally collide and overlap, physically and in conversation. Unlike birds, which occupy distinct spaces and vocal frequencies to avoid interference, people share the same spaces and frequencies, causing constant overlap. He suggests that while birds minimize conflict through separation, humans cannot avoid these physical and metaphorical collisions. William argues that people often create unnecessary collisions by mindlessly scrolling on their phones while walking. He believes that being distracted makes bumping into others almost inevitable and suggests that simply putting the phone away while walking would help people be more aware of their surroundings. William suggests that in busy environments, people should identify the natural flow of movement and avoid going against it. Paul Banks, from New York, USA asks- “You often talk about reality. To me, everything is reality. Reality hits us in so many ways. It just is. And it is really our perception of it that makes everything feel a little surreal. What are your thoughts guys?”Stuart explores the idea that reality may be experienced differently by different living beings. He suggests that while there may be a universal reality, each species or individual perceives and interacts with it through their own unique perspective, raising the question of whether the reality humans experience is the true reality. Stuart reflects on how people are not always aware of how subjective and surreal their perception of reality can be. William reflects on the idea that surreal experiences can come from the way people perceive themselves and their place in the world. He describes moments where his own voice and actions feel slightly detached, as though they are coming from somewhere else, and suggests that many people may experience this feeling but rarely express it. Stuart questions whether surreal experiences are truly surreal or whether they are moments when people briefly encounter the vastness and apparent meaninglessness of existence. He suggests that these feelings may come from confronting deeper questions about life and our place within it.William and Stuart discuss how the inability to fully comprehend existence can create a sense of surrealism. They compare this feeling to standing at the edge of a high cliff and looking into an unknown depth, suggesting that confronting the vastness of life pushes the boundaries of human understanding. They believe this perspective can also be empowering, as it helps people recognize that many personal worries are temporary and insignificant in the context of time, with most concerns and individual struggles eventually being forgotten. What do you make of this discussion? In this episode, Dr. K unpacks the growing phenomenon of "femcels" and the hidden traps of modern dating. Reacting to a viewer struggling with anxious attachment and limerence, he explains why setting impossible "romcom" standards destroys real-world connection and breaks down the psychological danger of feeding your mind a toxic internet diet. What to expect in this episode: The Myth of "Happily Ever After": Why finding a "soulmate" isn't the finish line, but merely the "seed" that requires years of active cultivation to actually grow into a healthy relationship. Fantasy vs. Reality: How anxious attachment and limerence cause people to fall in love with an idealized projection rather than a flawed, real human being, making it impossible for ordinary partners to measure up. The "Diet of the Mind": Why obsessively consuming "pinkpilled" content, toxic relationship advice, or deep dives into romantic tropes acts as highly processed junk food for your brain, fundamentally altering how you perceive love. Algorithm-Driven Loneliness: Understanding the internet's intense selection bias—why people in happy relationships aren't the ones posting on venting forums, which allows the algorithm to feed you an artificially negative view of the dating pool. The Psychology of Limerence: A deep dive into how childhood dynamics—such as having withholding parents but experiencing one perfect moment of care from a distant third party—create a lifelong, doomed search for a flawless romantic savior. Translating Love: Why relationships often fail not from a lack of care, but from a "communication gap" where partners fail to understand the specific "packages" (like gifts, physical touch, or acts of service) in which the other person has been taught to give and receive affection. In this episode of the Behind the Knife Global Surgery Series, we take a closer look at the real-world complexity of global surgery partnerships between high-income institutions and partners in the Global South. Words like equity, bidirectionality, partnership, and decolonization are used often in global surgery—but what do they actually mean when funding, mobility, research access, publication opportunities, and institutional power are unequally distributed?Host Mike Mallah is joined by Dr. Hugo Stark from George Hospital in South Africa and Dr. Sydney Bertram from Emory for a candid discussion about the benefits and tensions of collaborations in an unequal world. Together, they explore how global surgery partnerships can create meaningful educational and clinical value, how good intentions can still reproduce unequal systems, and how surgeons can build partnerships that are locally useful, honest about power, and ultimately centered on better surgical care for patients.Hosts/Guests:- Mike M.
