As fascist threats escalate globally, activist and playwright Sarah Schulman argues that achieving real change requires embracing imperfection and rejecting "supremacy concepts" – listen as she explains what this means for social justice movements today.Description: What is “solidarity” and what does it require? Giving up on perfection, for one thing, says Sarah Schulman, author of “Conflict is Not Abuse,” and so much more. Award-winning writer, teacher, playwright and activist, Schulman's latest book is “The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity”, in which she reflects on years of experiments and learning, from the 1980s to today. In this episode, find out what role GRITtv, an earlier iteration of Flanders' show, played in the movement for Palestinian liberation, and hear a discussion of the Harlem artist Alice Neel. Schulman sits on the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace. Her non-fiction books include “Conflict is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair” and “Let the Record Show: A Political History of ACT UP New York, 1987-1993”. Also in this episode, a commentary from Laura on the assassination of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman, a strategic progressive who practiced solidarity.“When I confronted the Israeli occupation of Palestine, something resonated for me emotionally between that and the AIDS experience. What I felt was similar was that people who were endangered were being falsely depicted as dangerous.” - Sarah Schulman“Right now we're in the middle of a cataclysm of fascism and there's no quick fix. And we have to understand that the idea that you can go in and just fix it is a supremacy concept.” - Sarah SchulmanGuests:  Sarah Schulman, Writer & AIDS Historian; Author, The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity This show is made possible by you! Aaron McIntire reports Israel's unilateral strikes on Iran's nuclear missile sites, military headquarters, and officials, escalating tensions without public U.S. backing, despite President Trump's push for a diplomatic nuclear deal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarifies the U.S. is not involved but was informed by Israel, emphasizing protection of American forces. McIntire warns this could dwarf the Israel-Hamas conflict. Trump has dueling messages on immigration, but says he's still vowing the largest mass deportation in history, protecting ICE and Border Patrol. Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) is tackled by Secret Service at a DHS press conference in Los Angeles after lunging at the podium to question Secretary Kristi Noem, later meeting to clarify the incident. The House narrowly passes Trump's $9.4 billion DOGE cuts, slashing foreign aid and public broadcasting funds. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shuts down Rep. Sarah Jacobs' (D-CA) culture war jab, citing mental health concerns with gender dysphoria in military readiness. McIntire fields listener questions on Los Angeles riots as law enforcement, congressional grandstanding, and Truth Social's role as Trump's megaphone.    Israel Iran strikes, nuclear sites, Trump administration, Marco Rubio, immigration policy, mass deportation, Alex Padilla, Kristi Noem, DOGE cuts, Pete Hegseth, gender dysphoria, Los Angeles riots, Truth Social, Josh Hawley, minimum wage

As far as we know so far, the strikes have targeted nuclear enrichment sites, military sites, the IRGC leadership, including Hussein Salammi, the head of the IRGC, the Army Chief of Staff, and leading nuclear scientists. Shortly after the blitz began, the IDF Home Front Command announced immediate changes to its guidelines, prohibiting all gatherings for educational, social, and workplace purposes. Israelis have been instructed to remain near bomb shelters as they await the Iranian response. It is an extremely tense moment for Israelis and Jews around the world. For years we've discussed the danger of Iran inching closer and closer to a nuclear weapon. The IDF said in a statement that in recent months it had accumulated evidence that Iran's nuclear program was “approaching the point of no return.” Joining us to unpack the ongoing events that are reshaping the Middle East in real time is Ronen Bergman. Ronen is a staff writer for The New York Times and Senior Correspondent for Military and Intelligence Affairs at Yedhiot Ahronot. Editor's Note: Piers recorded these interviews about Ukraine's peace talks and the Israel-Hamas war earlier this week. We have a blockbuster show on the Israeli strikes on Iran planned for Monday. Ukraine's audacious drone attack on a series of major airbases inside Russia can be construed in different ways - a major humiliation for Putin; a dangerous escalation, or a seismic moment which changes the way we think about war. President Trump is clearly losing patience with Putin, who he now says has “gone crazy,” but continues to hold the cards which allow Ukraine's fight to go on. So, how involved should the US and Europe be in whatever comes next? And for how much longer can Israel continue its increasingly-brutal assault on Gaza? James Coomarasamy, presenter of the BBC's Newshour and The World Tonight, speaks to Mike Huckabee, US Ambassador to Israel. Confirmed in the post two months ago, Mr Huckabee is the former Republican Governor of Arkansas and two-time Republican presidential nominee. He's an Evangelical Christian, who has backed the presence of Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories, which are considered illegal under international law - although Israel rejects this. Some opposition politicians in the US have been critical of his appointment and previous statements he's made about the ongoing war in Gaza. One Democratic senator said Huckabee was "woefully unfit" for the role and accused him of engaging in "brazen denial of the existence of the Palestinian people". But during questioning by a US Senate committee, Huckabee played down some of his past statements, saying he would "carry out the president's priorities", not his, and denied backing the expulsion of Palestinians. He takes up the role amid growing international calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and pressure for more humanitarian aid to reach the territory. Despite a number of proposals put forward by the international community, there does not yet appear to be a realistic prospect of an end to the conflict. More than 600 days of war and an 11-week blockade of all aid has pushed those living in Gaza into a deeper crisis. And while some aid has been allowed in in recent weeks, many countries are calling for more to be done. Tom and Jocko unravel the unpredictable realities of war, the dangers of overconfidence in leadership, and the psychology that drives nations into protracted conflicts. They also examine the concept of "why America loses wars," the test of wills at the heart of every battle, and how who needs to win often determines the real outcome. This week marked more than 600 days since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. In the wake of Hamas' horrific Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel, Palestinian health officials say at least 50,000 people – including thousands of women and children – have died from Israeli airstrikes and bombings in the Gaza Strip. As the war drags on, protesters on both sides are speaking out and demanding that their governments do more to end the conflict. Shaiel Ben-Ephraim, an Israeli academic and host of the 'History of the Land' of Israel podcast, talks about the nuances of the protests and what they could mean for a potential end to the war.And in headlines: A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated most of President Donald Trump's Liberation Day tariffs, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. will begin "aggressively" revoking the visas of Chinese college students, and the White House acknowledges errors in the hotly anticipated 'Make America Healthy Again' report.Show Notes:Check out Shaiel's podcast – https://tinyurl.com/5n8axdj2Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

The news is dizzying. President Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE where he'll meet terrorist leaders, negotiating with Iran that threatens Israel, the US, and the Arab world, and after cutting a deal with the Houthis that leaves Israel out, yet while brokering a deal with Hamas to secure the release of an American-Israeli hostage. There are rumors of Qatar, Hamas' patron and host, gifting a $400 million plane to Trump, raising questions of Qatari influence at a time they have not just supported Hamas, but also anti-Israel/antisemitic protests taking place across America. Following direct talks between the U.S. and Hamas officials, Edan Alexander was freed Monday after more than 19 months in captivity in Gaza. He is the last living U.S. hostage in Gaza. The Israel-Hamas conflict has already exacted a devastating toll. More than 52,000 people in Gaza have died, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Fifty-eight people who were seized by Hamas remain in Gaza, 23 of whom are believed to be alive. Gazans are facing a critical famine risk as Israel blocks aid. Now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government says it plans to expand the war if Hamas does not meet Israel's demands. Today on “Post Reports,” Elahe Izadi speaks with Middle East reporter Miriam Berger about Israel's plans to escalate the war in Gaza. Today's show was produced by Peter Bresnan with help from Elana Gordon. It was mixed by Sean Carter and edited by Ariel Plotnick with help from Reena Flores.
