The US State Department has changed their safety ratings for Mexico. The only places in the country where, according to the US State Department, you can just go as freely as you might to, say, Washington, DC, would be Campeche and Yucatan. Everywhere else in Mexico it's suggested that you should “exercise increased caution.” Some places I love to go, like Jalisco, Baja California, Chiapas, and Queretaro, I'm told I should “reconsider travel.” And my beloved Michoacan and Guerrero are “do not travel” zones, according to the US State Department. So … what does this mean for gringx bartenders?Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. This episode is hosted by Lou Bank with special guest Linda Sullivan of seynasecreto.Episode NotesThe cover to this episode is everything to me. The art is by Gilbert Hernandez — Beto, of Los Bros Hernandez, creators of the comics series Love and Rockets. When I was a 15- or 16-year-old kid, this comic book showed me that comics could tell any story. The magical realism that Beto and his brothers Jaime and Mario depicted in Mexico and Southern California stuck with me. I think a lot of the joy I feel when I'm traveling in rural Mexico now is the discovery of images that they planted in my teenage brain. I was a comics geek growing up — mainly Marvel with a bit of DC on the side. Then some of the alternative superhero stuff when that started popping in the 1980s. But Los Bros Hernandez showed me a whole different world. That realization of the broader stories that could be told through the medium didn't redirect the trajectory that I was on in the business side of comics. I landed at Marvel when I was 21 years old, where I made so many friends who are still friends to this day. The angry, sarcastic Greg Wright was one of those friends — is one of those friends, though now he's neither angry nor sarcastic having become a gentle and loving father who now goes by the more gentle and loving name Gregory Wright. Gregory stepped up to color this amazing Beto art.And the initial reason for commissioning the art? Since 2021, the National Museum of Mexican Art has welcomed me to help organize their annual spirited fund-raiser, Copitas de Sol. I get to drag in a bunch of spirits brands and a bunch of restaurants and bars, and I get to commission art like this. This cover will be one half of the poster for next year's Copitas de Sol, which will occur some time in August. And wait until you see the second half!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

With vaccinations increasingly a point of political tension, correspondent Jon Wertheim reports on the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program – a “no fault” vaccine court that balances the public health benefits of widespread vaccination with rare cases of harm to individuals. International crime groups are finding new, sophisticated ways to infiltrate the global supply chain online, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars of goods per year. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reports on the growing threat of cargo theft and how 24 thousand bottles of Guy Fieri's tequila vanished on their way to the warehouse. Correspondent Lesley Stahl visits Rob Reiner on the New Orleans set of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the long-awaited sequel to his 1984 cult classic, This Is Spinal Tap. Four decades after launching the now-beloved mockumentary genre with a fully improvised classic, the director of When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, and The Princess Bride reunites the band for an encore. "What happens when a small-town film festival starts drawing national attention—and a local tequila brand partners with a global giant?" In this vibrant episode of The JB and Sandy Show, the spotlight shines on two of Austin's favorite things: film and tequila. First up, Sandy and JB welcome Ray Perez, president of GTX Film, to talk about the Georgetown Film Festival—a one-day, all-access celebration of indie cinema happening this weekend. With over 20 filmmakers attending, free food and drinks, and a come-and-go format, it's shaping up to be the town's biggest cultural event of the year. Ray shares how the festival is growing thanks to local business support and a rising wave of Texas filmmaking momentum. “This could be our biggest year yet,” he says, noting the buzz from out-of-state filmmakers and the intimacy that makes Georgetown's event unique. Then, the conversation shifts from film to flavor as the guys break down a major local business move: Tito's Vodka is partnering with Lalo Tequila, one of Austin's rising spirits brands. Sandy calls it “an instant overnight success,” and the crew dives into the history of Tito's, the Austin alcohol boom, and why everyone in town seems to have their own tequila label now.

LIBERTY Sessions with Nada Jones | Celebrating women who do & inspiring women who can |
Kat Hantas is the co-founder of 21SEEDS Tequila, one of the fastest-growing flavored tequilas. She created 21SEEDS because it's what she wanted to drink – something smooth, simple, and casual with a fresh, natural flavor that made drinking infused tequila as approachable as a glass of wine. Before it was a brand, it was just a couple of bottles infused in her kitchen with things she had on hand. What began as one bottle turned into dozens… and eventually, a new beginning. She called her sister Nicole and our friend Sarika, and they started talking about the possibilities. They found a female-led distillery– a perfect fit. They worked on different infusions and got each recipe just right. They came up with a name. Two sisters and one friend: 21SEEDS was born. In today's episode, Nada talks with Kat about her journey as a co-founder in the spirits industry. After a conversation with her doctor, Kat set out to create a cleaner drink to replace her nightly glass of wine and then began making cocktails for her older friends and family who were experiencing similar side effects from drinking. Despite 21SEEDS quick success, Kat experienced several failed endeavors. She and Nada reflect on what success means, the importance of trying new things, and that age is an asset, not a liability. To find out more about 21SEEDS, check out their website. Follow on Instagram: @kathantas and @21seeds. Please follow us at @thisislibertyroad on Instagram; we want to share and connect with you and hear your thoughts and comments. Please rate and review this podcast. It helps to know if these conversations inspire and equip you to consider your possibilities and lean into your future with intention.

Tonight, we are having our third Wine Cocktails Show! We love these shows and I can't wait to make some of these cocktails for family and friends. We are expecting this show to be more of the same. Tonight, we will one White Wine Cocktail and one Red Wine Cocktails.Last year, our winning cocktail was the Caribou. I actually prefer the Blood Letter Trinidad Sour. So I am crowning it the new champion. We will see if one of the cocktails tonight can take the title. Tonight, we are enjoying:St Germain Cocktail. This is a simple drink to make. Put ice in a Collins glass, pour in 1½ oz. St Germain, 2 oz white or sparkling wine (we used Sauvignon Blanc), 2 oz. club soda. Stir and top with a lemon twist. That's it – you are done. Enjoy. Devils Margarita. This is for Tequila fans. Pour 1½ oz. Tequila Blanco, 1 oz. fresh lime juice, and ¾ oz. simple syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake until cold, then strain over ice in a rocks glass. Then float ½ oz. red wine by pouring slowly over the back of a bar spoon. Garnish with a lime wedge. We both loved the St. Germain Cocktail and rated it a 5 and a 4. We both liked the Devils Margarita and rated it a 3.Next week, we will have a Budget Wine Show and all three wines will be under $10. Join us and see if we can find a great wine for under $10.

As we edge closer to the postseason, Patti references a 1979 Ian Hunter classic while Pottymouth gets all literary while Waiting to Exhale. The lands of our respective births are giving us all the feels. Pottymouth promises to not mention the Red Sox at all so as not to flap any butterfly wings so you'll only hear the team name five or six times. The Guards are on a tear, chasing an historic comeback while fielding a team of relative unknowns and Patti does love an underdog story. How about MLB not being wrong about increasing the number of wildcard teams keeps the season meaningful until the end?Our boyfriends past and present are reaching milestones. Junior gets to 40, Giancarlo gets to 450, Jazz gets a 30-30, Jose can't stop getting to 30-30, and Pete and Corbin are each one away. Cal knocks out a new record every week, and Juan gets a personal best. Yedlimar de Jesús becomes the first Puerto Rican woman to play D1 baseball. We crosstrain with the NCAA where we learn that top high school girls basketball players are flexing their values and turning their backs on scholarships or even applying to colleges in states that have removed or limited a woman's right to choose. In international baseball news, Charros del Jalisco may not have prevailed but you can still get a Tequila hat. The US government has not yet approved Cuba's attendance for the World Baseball Classic Pool A round in Puerto Rico, a berth they have earned. This plays out in the spirits and wine categories. This episode is about spirits, and I am thrilled to have Monique Huston, VP Spirits Portfolio Management, back to help us be Spirit Smarter.

Ray Conniff Improvisations My father must have really loved the music of Ray Conniff. This is the sixth of eight albums from this arranger and orchestra leader in my dad's collection. This one has a bit of a twist to it. No. Not the dance. While the title of the album makes it seem like it will be a live album, that is not the nature of the concert here. Several of the songs you hear will be improvisations or interpretations of some pretty popular melodies from throughout time. So, get ready to hear those lush strings paired with those lyric-less vocals in Volume 247: A Conniff Concert. For more information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it. Tequila is produced exclusively in Mexico and has become a star in California's cocktail culture. More than 50 million cases of tequila were sold in the U.S. in 2023, with most of that consumed in the Golden State. And demand for tequila is growing faster than vodka, whiskey, and all other spirits combined. But this summer, several legal battles have begun which could shake up the entire industry. There was sort of mini-boycott of agave syrup among bartenders about a decade ago, fueled by the industrial product contributing to Jalisco's monoculture of blue weber agave. Or maybe fueled by a feeling that agave should only be used to make spirits – I'm still not 100% clear on that. And then there was the rise of the “new” agave syrup, which is really the original agave syrup, which is made in an entirely pre-industrial manner, in places other than Jalisco, from agaves other than blue weber. And it's awesome! But it doesn't taste like the agave syrup bartenders expect. So … what do you do with it? And, for that matter, what do you do with Mezcal that doesn't taste like smokey Espadin and Tequila that doesn't taste like the stuff that thwarted you in college?Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. Interpret it as you like, either the unusual more than a year since the last major league no-hitter, or the disappointing and angry-making corporate culture associated with the Detroit Tigers. We kick off the police blotter by sharing the outcome of the Athletic's investigation resulting in eight men, including six from Ilitch Sports and Entertainment, which operates the team, the former assistant manager, and a former player/current broadcaster for the team, of an appalling range of misconduct toward women staff. We move on to the behavior of the NYY in light of the killing of Charlie Kirk, someone completely unrelated to the Yankees organization, yet honored with a moment of silence – a gesture not extended to victims of school shootings or the killing of elected officials. It's a choice. In boyfriend news, Patrick Bailey has a grand slam walk off adding to Tanner Tightpant's very bad week. Walker Buehler started off his PHI tenure with a win. Sal Frelick contributes to MIL being the first team to clinch, and Anthony RIzzo commits an error on the first play coming his way in retirement, but makes up for it in a round of beers for his fellow fans. We ponder the range of options of sea witches / mermaids / selkies / sirens available through Etsy vs Craig's List but the witch that was booked set SEA on a winning streak. Met's owner Stephen Cohen invests in the renovation of Beyer Stadium, home of the Rockford Peaches. Robinson Canó reaches 4000 professional hits, probably. And there is still hope for Tequila. We say, “That's the person who would wear a dickie,” “It's more you than it is hair,” and “I'm missing 19 hits.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. On this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd turn their ears toward one of the most expressive instruments in music history: the saxophone. From Bob Seger's hauntingly beautiful “Turn The Page” to the iconic smoothness of Wham's “Careless Whisper,” the duo digs into the way the saxophone can transform a song into something timeless. They groove through the Rolling Stones' laid-back “Waiting On A Friend,” dance with Bowie's “Modern Love,” feel the epic storytelling in Springsteen's “Jungleland,” and toast with the classic party anthem “Tequila” by The Champs. The journey continues with Aretha Franklin's powerhouse hit “Respect,” the soulful yearning of INXS' “Never Tear Us Apart,” the rock ‘n' roll roots of Bill Haley's “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” and another Bowie gem, “Young Americans.”Check out the playlist on YouTube Music. In the second half of the show, Tim the Nerd reflects on the passing of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. While acknowledging Hogan as the spark that first drew him into the world of wrestling, Tim candidly explores the complicated legacy Hogan leaves behind—both as a larger-than-life performer and as a deeply flawed man. He emphasizes the importance of being honest about public figures' lives, for better and worse, while also calling out the extremes of online criticism that turned into harassment of Hogan's loved ones. It's a thoughtful, music-filled episode blending appreciation for the power of the saxophone with a nuanced conversation about legacy, fandom, and the messy ways we talk about the people who shaped pop culture. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Head to his website for information on how to purchase his EP, Here's To You, which is available on all digital platforms.Head to Friends Talking Nerdy's website for more information on where to find us online.

Rodrigo Medellin loves bats. The Mexican conservationist has been obsessed with the often maligned creatures for over six decades. As a child, he kept blood in ice cube trays in his parents' freezer, to feed to his pet vampire bats. He went on to create Mexico City's first ever bat festival, and to work with governments, universities, NGOs and researchers all over the world. To many, Rodrigo IS the "bat man."Like many Mexicans, he is also fiercely proud of the country's native spirits: tequila and mezcal. The agave spirits are hugely important for Mexico's economy, especially in the states of Jalisco and Oaxaca. Exports of the drinks are worth billions. Tequila and mezcal have become increasingly popular in recent decades, with sales boosted by big budget celebrity-owned brands designed to appeal to the US consumer. From Kendall Jenner to George Clooney, US celebrities have been riding high on the mass market appeal of the liquor. But the boom in these industries has had unintended consequences for Rodrigo's beloved bats. Often the agave the spirits are made from is harvested early, before the slow-growing plant can flower. This means bats cannot feed from the nectar, and critically, they can't do their job as pollinators. This contributes to agave monocultures which are susceptible to disease and blight. Rodrigo explains how he wanted to change the way the industry works, creating a “bat-friendly” certification for tequila and mezcal producers who leave 5% of the agave untouched, to bloom. But why have so few brands been certified, why is the programme controversial for some producers, and why are bats a tricky sell as far as conservation for many people and communities? Sarah Treanor spends time with Rodrigo in Mexico City and Oaxaca to find out. A Bespoken Media production. Image: Rodrigo Medellin holding a bat (Credit: Paul Webala)
