Jim Hill and Len Testa start with Monstropolis, Disney park capacity, Universal patents, and the sort of tequila event that makes you check whether your Epcot admission is included. Then Jim looks back at Disneyland's very first Grad Nite, held on June 15, 1961, when 8,500 well-dressed seniors were locked inside the park until 4:30 a.m. Along the way, they cover Life magazine's lost photo spread, chaperone lounges, forbidden long hair, and the timeless teenage urge to stash contraband somewhere near Autopia. It is history, logistics, and questionable decision-making, which is to say: high school. NEWS • Monstropolis details reveal “Human Day,” a walking route inspired by Mike and Sulley's commute, and Disney's growing fondness for “you're invited to a special day” ride premises. • Grand Floridian Cafe closes July 19 for refurbishment, raising the important question of whether the menu gets more than new curtains. • La Cava del Tequila hosts a July 14 Epcot event with tastings, cocktails, lunch at San Angel Inn, and a commemorative 1982 menu. • Disneyland restores all-day park hopping, while early signs of DisneylandForward construction point toward a new parking structure and future DCA expansion. • Listener questions cover theme park capacity math, House of Mouse villains, Monstropolis pin trading, and whether Universal's latest patents could make vending machines and park transportation a lot smarter. FEATURE • Jim traces how Disneyland's original Grad Nite grew out of Walt's decision to close Holidayland and Jack Lindquist's search for a new after-hours revenue stream. • The first Grad Nite brought 8,500 students from 28 Southern California high schools to Disneyland for $6 each, or about $67 in today's money. • Life magazine sent four photographers and shot thousands of photos, only to bump the planned spread when the Berlin Wall changed the news cycle. • Disneyland's Grad Nite rules included school buses, dress codes, chaperones, locker checks, planter searches, and haircuts for boys whose hair dared to touch a collar. John Paul DeJoria epitomizes the American dream, rising from adversity to become a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is best known for co-founding iconic brands John Paul Mitchell Systems and The Patrón Spirits Company. John Paul has made philanthropy his core mission, establishing JP's Peace, Love & Happiness Family Foundation in 2011 to contribute to a sustainable planet by investing in people, animals, and the environment. This year, he was recognized as #24 on Forbes' list of the 250 Greatest Self-Made Americans. His motto, "Success Unshared is Failure," which is also the title of his new book, reflects a lifelong commitment to sharing success and fostering positive change. Summary John Paul DeJoria's life story has the shape of the American dream, but in this conversation he keeps pulling it back from myth into practice. He begins with a lesson from his mother, who had very little after his father left but still taught him and his brother to give a dime to the Salvation Army because someone else always needed more. That early ethic becomes the foundation of his book, motto, and operating philosophy: success only matters if it is shared. The discussion then moves through the formative hardships that could have made him bitter: foster care, homelessness, odd jobs, and door-to-door sales. John Paul does not romanticize those moments, but he does turn them into practical leadership lessons. When you are down, don't relive what got you there; look for the next constructive step. When you are rejected, be prepared for it, refuse to personalize it, and knock on the next door with the same enthusiasm. From there, the episode turns to entrepreneurship. John Paul explains why Paul Mitchell was built for the "reorder business," not the selling business: make the product so good that customers come back again and again. Scarcity forced the company to become lean, direct, and deeply customer-centered, teaching hairdressers how to use and sell the products instead of relying on advertising. The same playbook carried into Patrón, where education, quality, and grassroots selling helped create a premium tequila category that many distributors initially said was too expensive to scale. Finally, the conversation becomes a meditation on values, leadership, and legacy. John Paul talks about refusing to test on animals, stripping out unnecessary middle management, learning to let go as a leader, and building a culture where people know the mission without constant supervision. His philanthropy follows the same logic as his companies: not just giving money away, but investing in dignity, self-sufficiency, and a chance for people to move one notch higher. His definition of excellence closes the loop beautifully: excellence is what you do when no one is looking and the desire to keep finding something you can do a little bit better. Takeaways · "Success Unshared is Failure" was not a slogan for John Paul; it started as a childhood lesson in generosity when his family had almost nothing. · Adversity only becomes useful when it teaches you to look forward. You cannot change "yesterday's newspapers," but you can decide the next step. · Rejection is survivable when you expect it. The trick is not to avoid the closed doors, but to keep your energy intact for the next one. · Great businesses are built for reorder, not just first purchase. Quality has to be strong enough that customers come back without being chased. · Scarcity can sharpen a company. With no advertising budget, Paul Mitchell had to win by educating hairdressers and helping salons create retail revenue. · The real product was the system: the bottle, the stylist education, the salon relationship, and the customer experience all worked together. · Values become real when they cost something. Refusing to test on animals was not positioned as a marketing tactic but as a line John Paul would not cross. · The best partnerships have clear lanes. Paul Mitchell brought the hairdressing and creative credibility; John Paul brought the business building and go-to-market engine. · Scaling as a leader requires letting go. John Paul had to learn that having time to think was as important as personally overseeing every detail. · The best philanthropy is a hand up, not a handout. John Paul frames giving as an investment in someone's ability to become self-sufficient. · Excellence is not status or achievement. It is the standard you hold when no one else is watching and the commitment to keep growing. Singer/songwriter Emerson Magaña's childhood was filled with the rhythms of Central and South America. Born in Colima, Mexico, he first picked up guitar from his father. Eventually, nature, women, and tequila inspired him to write new original music. On this episode, Magana talks about his musical journey and how those songs became his debut album “Tequila Time” – an ode to his home in Mexico and his time playing at tourist resorts in the beautiful Barra de Navidad.
We've talked about agave straws in previous episodes, but I've been spending more time digging into them. And more than that, I've been spending time reading about – and now speaking with – Dr. Sandra Pascoe Ortiz, who has developed a plastic that is compostable and leaves behind no microplastics.
John Paul DeJoria grew up with no connections, no money, and no roadmap. He sold encyclopedias door-to-door despite constant rejection, got fired from three consecutive jobs, and lived out of his car while raising his young son. That same relentless spirit later helped him turn Patrón Tequila into one of the most recognized spirit brands in the world. In what I can only describe as a fantastic but slightly chaotic podcast episode it was great to be joined by 2x Symetra Tour winner, Former LPGA Tour player, 2016 Olympian for Mexico & current LET Access Series pro Alejandra Llaneza who phoned in from Madrid after competing in Santander Golf Tour event in preparation for getting her LET Access Series season for 2026 up and running this week in Czechia after finishing last season in the top 25 in the order of Merit standings which included a win at Santander Golf Tour Avila. Ale is from the beautiful city of Mexico City and began the game at 6 years old before winning the first of her 7 Mexican Junior Championships at the age of 11. Ale would go to University of Arizona and would win Rookie of the Year for 2007-08 season before winning on Cactus Tour in 2011 as an amateur then turning pro in 2012. There has been many pro highlights from Llaneza as she comes into her 14th season on tour as a pro with milestones such as winning Silver Medal at 2014 Central American & Caribbean Games in Veracruz, finishing 4th at 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, winning twice on Symetra Tour at 2015 Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Charity Classic & 2019 Garden City Charity Classic, competing on LPGA Tour for 4 years between 2013-17. Also playing in 5 Major Championship events at 3x KMPG PGA Championships, 1x US Women's Open & 1x Evian Championship but nothing I'm sure will compare to the sense of pride of being selected in 2016 to represent Mexico at Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro a truly memorable experience for Ale. Come for the great career journey and stay for the Fruity Taco, dancing to the Macarena & Tequila chat. Not laughed so much in an episode in a long long time Ale was an iconic guest and can't thank her enough! Download via Podbean, Apple Podcasts & Spotify, also on YouTube.

There are places that have massive collections of beautiful, small-batch agave spirits, but having the bottles isn't the same as understanding them. And having those bottles, which are often expensive, requires additional expense in training staff. Or, anyway, are most likely going to realize their financial potential with training. But … who does that? Where do agave geeks go to have the geekiest conversations? Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. Lionel Messi is a global sports icon and had a deep-pocketed strategic partner at his side. So why did his sports drink brand Más+ fail? The hosts break it down and also discuss how protein snack brand Wilde is turning heads with a new take on a cheesy cracker. Plus, Patrón's Roberto Núñez & David Rodriguez reveal how the leading tequila maker scaled globally without sacrificing its handcrafted roots. Show notes: 0:20: Face Tattoo. Shelf Talkers. Mas Authenticity. Super Salsa. Wilde Ideas. Ray's New Substack? – Ray and John congratulate — and rib — Mike about Arsenal finally winning the Premier League before highlighting opportunities for BevNET Live attendees to connect directly with retail buyers from Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe, Wegmans, and Walmart. The conversation then turns to the shutdown of Messi's sports drink brand, Más+, and why celebrity alone isn't enough to build a durable consumer brand, underscoring the importance of authenticity and founder involvement. That theme carries into a discussion of Ithaca Hummus founder Chris Kirby and his new venture, Guillermo's Salsa, with the hosts crediting the brand's early traction to strong execution, product quality, retail expertise, and Kirby's operational experience. The latter half of the episode shifts into rapid-fire product tastings, including Armra's new colostrum soda, which sparks a conversation about rising consumer interest in gut health ingredients and functional beverages. The hosts also heap praise on Wilde, whose protein crackers impress with their Cheez-It-like taste and texture, while spotlighting several other brands, including protein- and probiotic-infused Rogue Snacks, Summer Camp iced tea concentrates, and Holy Tshili chili crisp seasonings. 29:17: Interview: Roberto Núñez & David Rodriguez, Patrón – On location at Patrón Tequila's sprawling hacienda and distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, U.S. National Brand Ambassador Roberto Núñez and Master Distiller David Rodriguez discuss the company's emphasis on craftsmanship and tradition while highlighting the launch of Patrón 100, the brand's new distill-proof tequila. From tahona wheels and copper pot stills to the decision to scale without automation, the conversation offers a rare look inside "the Patrón way" and the philosophy that continues to shape one of tequila's most iconic brands. Brands in this episode: Patron Tequila, Cabu, Trip, Zico, Nantucket Nectars, Culture Pop, Athletic Brewing, Mas+ Messi, White Claw, Prime, Armra, Ithaca Hummus, Guillermo's Salsa, Jalapa Salsa, Svedka, Wilde, Cheez-It, Khloud, Summer Camp, ogue Snacks, Holy Tshili

I find myself saying “multi-generational wisdom” pretty frequently, in reference to these communities I get to visit in rural Mexico. But when they start talking about how the moon affects their production of agave spirits, or the presence of a pregnant woman, I kind of laugh it off. So what am I missing, where is the truth, and how do I reconcile my own hypocrisy? Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. This episode is hosted by Lou Bank with special guest Linda Sullivan of seynasecreto and wisdom from raicillero Paulo Rodriguez and Ana Elvia Rodriguez Lorenzo.

S6E6 Campari America's Allison Varone on mindful drinking and the new rules of beverage brand building with Gen ZEveryone keeps repeating that Gen Z doesn't drink. The data tells a far more interesting story about mindful drinking and this episode unpacks it.In this episode of The Retail Razor Show, Ricardo Belmar and Casey Golden sit down with Allison Varone, Head of Marketing at Campari America, for a genuine masterclass in beverage brand building. With more than 20 years across the wine and spirits industry, Allison leads marketing for one of the most iconic brand portfolios in the world: Aperol, Campari, Wild Turkey, Courvoisier, Grand Marnier, Espolòn Tequila, and the newly US-launched Crodino, a non-alcoholic spritz beloved in Italy since 1965.This conversation goes beyond the headlines about the spirits industry to explore the cultural shifts, strategic bets, and marketing instincts behind some of the most recognizable drinks in the world, and what they mean for anyone building consumer brands in 2026.What We Cover· How Gen Z is redefining drinking culture, and why mindful drinking is a growth opportunity for the spirits industry rather than a threat· The "zebra striping" trend: how consumers now bounce between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages depending on the occasion· Crodino's US launch and the strategic timing behind Campari America's move into the non-alcoholic spirits space· Why occasion-led marketing has replaced category-first brand thinking across the beverage industry· What Aperol's Coachella activation and Negroni Week reveal about experiential marketing ROI· How Wild Turkey's "Don't Change a Damn Thing" campaign keeps a heritage brand culturally relevant on TikTok· The real playbook for challenger brands trying to break through a crowded beverage market· What premiumization actually means when consumers are cautious, and how Espolòn Tequila balances premium with accessible· Inside the Campari Academy and how bartender education becomes a competitive advantage· A bold look at the spirits industry in 2035: more inclusive, more occasion-led, and centered on human connectionA Standout Idea from This EpisodeAllison's advice to brand strategists was refreshingly direct: focus less on categories and more on how consumers are actually evolving. Lead with the occasion, then figure out where your brand fits into that moment. That is brand strategy advice that travels far beyond the spirits industry.Whether you work in retail, brand marketing, CPG, or you are simply curious about how culture shapes consumer behavior, this episode delivers insight you can use immediately. This Episode is Brought to You By RetailClub.Join 2,000 retail leaders at RetailClub AI Festival, September 22–24 in Huntington Beach. Last episode I talked with Linda Sullivan about the tumbado process of harvesting agave. This episode … also about tumbado, but with Paulo Rodriguez, the raicillero who brought the method back to Chacala, Jalisco! So, why two episodes about the same thing? I was maybe a bit under the influence when I recorded the episode with Paulo, forgot we'd recorded it, got home, and recorded last week's episode with Linda. It's a Deja Lou episode of Agave Road Trip! Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. Welcome back to another wild episode of Locked & Probably Loaded with your hosts DJ Qualls and Kelly Blackheart, joined by producer Isaac Abrams! In this episode, DJ returns from an emotional weekend at Yellow City Comic-Con in Amarillo, Texas, and opens up about his upcoming parade appearance in Calgary where he's getting the keys to the city. They discuss the wastefulness of celebrity fashion culture and LA's impossible trends. Things get real discussing family dynamics, aging parents, and DJ's revelation that he's "no longer afraid of dying." They reflect on unexpected podcast growth including listeners in Mexico and urge everyone to engage on social media. Packed with passionate commentary on Hollywood Boulevard's decline, corporate takeover of LA, vacant storefronts, and why LA needs NYC-style rent control.
