Like a collapsing house of cards, fur products are falling by the wayside of society. In recent years cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley have banned the sale of fur products. Then this past month California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a fur ban that which will outlaw residents of the state from selling or making clothing, shoes or handbags with fur starting in 2023. The Nonhuman Rights Project has represented Beulah, Minnie and Karen - all elephants owned by the Commorford Zoo in Connecticut. She was 54 years old. A necropsy revealed she died of a heart-attack. As we went to press, Karen, another elephant locked up at this same zoo, also passed away. She too was a client of the Nonhuman Rights Project. The state of Michigan has become a 'no-kill' state where animal shelters are euthanizing less than 10% of animals received. Of the animals received in Michigan animal shelters, 90% of them were either returned, adopted or transferred to other shelters and rescue groups. This past Monday, Florida wildlife officials disclosed that trail cameras had video of one panther and one bobcat who exhibited what look like neurological abnormalities. The animals had difficultly walking and using their hind legs. Officials are investigating possible causes such as toxins, rat poison or nutritional deficiencies.

In the early morning hours of August 16, 2019, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife "lethally removed" four members of the wolf pack known as the Profanity Peak Pack. The wolves were targeted by the Diamond M cattle ranch which claimed these wolves were responsible for killing their cattle. The Center for a Humane Economy sued Washington State to stop the WDFW from wiping out these wild animals. But on the day the judge ruled in favor of the wolves, actions taken by WSDF killed all but one member of this pack.
