In 1980, Ingrid Newkirk co-founded People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), revolutionizing the animal rights movement. As PETA's president, she has led the organization to become the world's largest animal rights group, known for its groundbreaking campaigns and significant societal changes. Under her leadership, PETA has conducted undercover investigations, organized high-profile protests, and engaged in corporate negotiations and legislative efforts, saving countless animals' lives.   Ingrid returns to our show to discuss her legacy, the challenges she's faced, the victories she's achieved, and her vision for the future. We'll explore how her tireless advocacy has elevated global standards for compassion and humane practices. Additionally, she will share actionable steps listeners can take, both big and small, to make a meaningful impact in the fight for animal rights.   “Yes, it's a bit shocking to realize that that lovely hamburger with, you know, maybe the dancing cow on the label, didn't come from anything nice at all. It came from privation and misery. So, we showed the truth. But what I would say is, what's truly shocking, what's truly extreme, what's horrifying, is what actually happens to animals. And that is what we have an obligation to keep saying to people, have a look, have a look, act as if you care, because I think you think that you're a kind person, a decent individual.  You would teach your children the golden rule of do unto others as you would have them do unto you. So let's act that way. Let's not just say we care. Let's actually care. It's not really hard. So here's what you need to do.”  - Ingrid Newkirk   What we discuss in this episode: - Changes in the world since PETA's inception. - PETA's successful tactics and numerous victories. - Why animal testing is not only cruel but also yields unreliable results. - The CARGO Act. - Inherent flaws in the no-kill movement.  - The truth about the wool and down feather industries. - Cruelty in the production of coconut products from Thailand, and what you can do to fight against it. - Current PETA campaigns and how you can get involved.   Resources: - PETA's website: https://www.peta.org/ - PETA's campaigns: https://www.peta.org/action/campaigns/ - Ingrid Newkirk's books: Ingrid Newkirk: books, biography, latest update - https://www.amazon.com/stores/Ingrid-Newkirk/author/B001IOBH7C? - Switch4Good podcast episode 87: Animals Are Not Ours with PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk - Switch4Good - https://switch4good.org/animals-are-not-ours-with-peta-founder-ingrid-newkirk/   ★☆★ Help us remove dairy from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/dietary-guidelines-for-americans-2025/ ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. If there's anything going on, we find it irresistible not to speak out, to do something, to say something, to enlist other people to help because we're not some superhuman force, we're a collection of humans.” Ingrid Newkirk   Ingrid Newkirk co-founded People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in 1980, and since then, I don't think there has been a single day that she has not fought against injustice toward animals. She is not only a hero for millions of animals but also for humans, for showing all of us how to make change happen and for inspiring us to do it. Since it was founded, PETA has exposed horrific animal abuse in laboratories, leading to many firsts, including canceled funding, closed facilities, seizure of animals, and charges filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PETA has also closed the largest horse-slaughter operation in North America, convinced dozens of major designers and hundreds of companies to stop using fur, ended all car-crash tests on animals, helped schools switch to innovative animal-free dissection tools, and provided millions of people with information on being vegan, companion animal care, and countless other issues. The national conversation around screentime has continued to boomerang at an alarming rate, and parents' attitudes continue to shift and change. When the pandemic made it an educational necessity, it provided more openness for what technology can offer our children. But as new technology such as AI is being introduced, some parents have begun retreating again. Sara DeWitt says that now is in fact the time to have a deeper, more open dialogue about positive digital media experiences for young children, and how we can use these tools to form good media habits that can address topics like children's mental health, school readiness, critical thinking, and ultimately, the importance of human connection. She is the Senior VP and GM for PBS Kids and joins Michelle to talk about how to use screentime wisely for your kids.Colin Henstock is the Investigations Project Manager for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). He talks with Michelle about how to care for breahing - impaired dogs. French and English bulldogs, Boston terriers, pugs, boxers, and other breathing-impaired breeds (BIBs), who are purposefully bred to have severely distorted airways that make it hard for them to breathe and cause them great discomfort and to pant, snort, and wheeze. Milan Kordestani is an entrepreneur, writer, and founder of several companies oriented toward giving individuals control over their own discourse and creation. Michelle talks to him about his new book, " I'm Just Saying: A Guide To Maintaining Civil Discourse in an Increasingly Divided World.Summer is here and snacks have become even more essential to daily routines. Kids are home, families are planning road trips and vacations and there is always a need for a healthy snack. Snacks are a staple of the American diet, making up nearly 22% of adults' total daily calories, according to recent data from the National Institutes of Health. The trick is to embrace snacking and make smart choices. Most people do not get the recommended number of servings of fruit per day, leaving them without many important nutrients. Snacks like dried fruit can help fill in those gaps. Kimberly Galante, Head of Innovation at Dole, discusses how snacking has become a regular part of the American diet and how people can make healthy choices that are full in flavor and nutrition.

Does PETA kill animals? And other questions about PETA's shelter answered. By Katherine Sullivan PETA.org   Original post: https://www.peta.org/features/peta-kills-animals-truth/    People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was founded in 1980, is the largest animal rights organization in the world, and PETA entities have more than 9 million members and supporters globally.  PETA believes that animals have rights and deserve to have their best interests taken into consideration, regardless of whether they are useful to humans. Like you, they are capable of suffering and have an interest in leading their own lives. PETA opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment business. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, investigative newsgathering and reporting, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. Ingrid Newkirk is a prominent animal activist who co-founded the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)—the world's largest animal rights organization. An outspoken woman, she is best known for creating awareness about various issues related to animal rights all over the world. Her organization has so far exposed the atrocities meted out on innocent animals in laboratories, forced the closure of the largest horse-slaughter operation in North America, and has helped to put a stop to all car-crash tests on animals among several other achievements. As a young girl she was not much interested in animals—she was not even a vegetarian and really loved to eat meat. It was when she began witnessing the horrible cruelties animals are often subjected to that her stance on animals began to change.

We discuss whether or not honey is vegan, factory farming, and whether plants and fungus have the same rights of animals. Newkirk also responds to the comedy duo Penn & Teller who produced a criticism of PETA on their Showtime program. Newkirk also takes your patron questions.Join the conversation! It is heartbreaking to hear what is done to these thousands of monkeys brought into the USA. It is also extremely dangerous to us, and we'll find out why in this episode.About Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel: She is a senior science advisor on primate experimentation for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). A Fulbright scholar who has studied the human-primate interface in Africa, Asia, and the primate biomedical facilities of the U.S. for nearly 40 years, she has published 95 peer-reviewed articles spanning the fields of primatology, virology, epidemiology, microbiology, and conservation. Her work includes addressing the neglect and disease risk posed by the University of Washington's Washington National Primate Research Center, where she worked before coming to PETA. DID YOU KNOW: Since the start of the pandemic nearly 70,000 monkeys have been imported into the U.S. These monkeys arrived from more than 300 international shipments and were then trucked to secretive quarantine facilities. Quarantine is designed to protect public health by detecting monkeys arriving with viral hemorrhagic fevers, tuberculosis, pathogens that can cause deadly diarrheal diseases, fatal diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, and Herpes B—a zoonotic macaque virus. Not all the monkeys make it out of quarantine alive and it is not uncommon for  dangerous pathogens to be missed, showing up months or years later to threaten public health and further undermine the utility of these monkeys as biomedical models. Primate facilities in Texas and Louisiana acknowledge that the thousands of monkeys whom they are housing outdoors are reservoirs for deadly parasites that can spill over into human populations. PETA has been urging the NIH to move away from experiments on animals, and its campaigns have shut down numerous NIH-funded experiments, including shocking psychological experiments on baby monkeys taken from their mothers shortly after birth.

In this episode of The Causes or Cures Podcast, Dr. Eeks chats with Dr. Katherine Roe, a neuroscientist working on developing evidence-based strategies to replace animals in scientific research. While preclinical studies with animals is widely accepted in scientific research as a necessary step, many people worry about the welfare of the animals and wonder if there are viable, better alternatives. Some researchers do not want to do research on animals and struggle with the idea that they might have to, to advance their career. In this podcast, Dr. Roe will discuss potential alternatives to animal research, her view on how valuable and applicable results from animal trials are for humans, the "pressure to publish" and how that might lead to unnecessary animal trials, and why she believes it is more valuable for overall human heatlh to fund other kinds of research. Dr. Roe is a neuroscientist who used to work at the National Institute of Health. She is the chief of the scientific advancement outreach division at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).(Keep in mind that this is a podcast. Hank Unplugged: Essential Christian Conversations

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reflects on the rage of the organization known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). This time over the World Series because baseball pitchers warm up in what is called the “bullpen,” a term most insensitive to cattle. PETA suggests “Arm Barn.” As ridiculous as that may seem, it raises the question of what organizations like PETA are up to in the first place. Ultimately, they seek to elevate animals to the status of human beings—and ascribe to animals the personhood reserved for a child. Some, such as bioethicist Peter Singer, go so far as to elevate chimpanzees above disabled children. Wrongheaded, ridiculous, and utterly horrifying. In reality, humans beings are created in the image of God, which ensures that a Down Syndrome child is afforded the same dignity given to a professor like Singer. While we may eat lamb as our Lord did during Passover celebrations, we must never treat lambs in a way that dishonors their Creator. A primary precept of biblical theology is that animals occupy a special role in the hierarchy of creation. While we must never supplant human exceptionalism for animal equality, we are nonetheless called to the ethical treatment of animals.
