Following a year of animal welfare campaigns, on the ground demonstrations, fundraisers, petitions and political briefings, World Animal Protection are celebrating some significant wins for 2023. Today, I welcome back Ben Pearson who is World Animal Protection's Country Director Australia and New Zealand. Ben manages programmes for animals on farms and animals in the wild with a key campaign on wildlife tourism. He has more than 24 years experience advocating for the environment and animals. Most of us will never see a lion or leopard or giraffe in their natural habitat. But many of us, have seen them up close in a zoo. Sometimes that's in a big facility, such as the almost 300 hectares that's home to 5,000 animals in Toronto. Or, it's in a roadside location with a smaller or specialty assortment of wildlife. Either way, ensuring that the animals are well cared for is a concern for all. For insight, we welcome Dolf DeJong, president and CEO of the Toronto Zoo; Melissa Matlow, campaign director for World Animal Protection, Canada; and Kendra Coulter, professor in management and organizational studies at Western University and author of "Defending Animals: Finding Hope on the Front Lines of Animal Protection."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Encountering animals on our travels is one of the most life-changing experiences we can have, but how can we do it in a more ethical and responsible way? Kristen Diederich is with me today to talk about ethical wildlife tourism and how to be more informed when choosing our animal experiences. Kristen is the founder of Compassionate Travels, which focuses on crafting ethical, wildlife-centric adventures for responsible, values-driven travelers. As an animal rights advocate and well-traveled adventurer, she has first-hand experience on the scale of animal suffering in the tourism industry and the challenges of finding experiences that don't contribute to it. Kristen and I discuss the complex issues around common experiences like elephant riding, taking photos, feeding and touching, and even cultural experiences like dog sledding. She shares the concept of “welfare washing” and why even some of the most seemingly ethical sanctuaries or rescues are still causing harm. You'll learn how to identify truly ethical sanctuaries and tour operators and gain an understanding of the broader impact of mass tourism on animal welfare. How have your thoughts changed on animal tourism? I'd love to hear what you took away from this episode and hope you'll share by sending me an audio message. Bev Boyle, who is the Global Head of Media at World Animal Protection, plays a pivotal role in shaping the narrative around animal welfare on a global scale. She's at the forefront of crafting media campaigns that not only raise awareness but also inspire action. In this episode of the PR Resolution Podcast, Stella and Bev discuss a current campaign that is making change; Bev shares how the ‘Stop TUI from profiting from dolphin cruelty' emerged as an issue, how the content is reaching a wide audience and how the result of audience engagement is encouraging a major corporate to make change to their products. Bev also shares how her global team works with media. How they have adapted processes to work with modern media change & their dedication to responding to animal news and journalists requests in less than 60minutes. They cover the campaigns that have made the biggest impact and have helped save animals, the components and how the team measure them, especially when the biggest KPI is often changing international tourist trends. Bev also shares her insight on the challenging financial climate for charities right now and how World Animal Protection are making efficiencies that all PR teams can take inspiration from. Watch the interview on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/jl8xG6TVhyc Nicholas is an ecologist and co-founder of PlantBasedData.org, a library of peer-reviewed articles and summaries on the environmental, health, economic, and zoonotic disease evidence to shift to plant-based diets. He's recently prepared a scientific report for World Animal Protection, including a contribution to carbon modeling with Navius Research, on the impacts and opportunities with agriculture in Canada.Nicholas is also on the advisory board of the Eco Cooks Club, an educational program to empower youth to take climate action by connecting how our food choices impact the planet. He's also helped launch and leads climate communications for a data center that's part of the Canadian Centre for Climate Services. He was recently a Center for Biological Diversity panelist alongside Dr. Tara Garnett from Oxford University, and a speaker at the launch of the documentary Meat the Future along with the Jane Goodall Institute, the Good Food Institute, and BluNalu. His research during his master's degree in environmental practice focused on the global greenhouse gas emissions that are attributed to animal agriculture. He's since written and been interviewed for The New Republic, Plant Based News, Plant Proof, Sentient Media, Forbes, The Globe and Mail, Macleans, and Planet Friendly News. Bailey is a young animal rights activist, known for disrupting a dolphin show at Dolphin Marine Conservation Park when he was 14 years old.Bailey went vegan after watching YouTube videos which connected him to how meat, dairy and eggs are created. He was shocked and appalled that these companies were meant to be RSPCA approved and he instantly knew he no longer wanted to support them. Bailey's love for marine life, and dolphins in particular was forged after watching the documentary "Black Fish". Bailey regularly protests dolphins being kept in captivity and is calling on the government to support retirement plans for dolphins currently kept in captivity. Bailey works with a number of organisations that align with his values including PETA, World Animal Protection and Animal Justice Party. Recent PETA demonstrations include human meat trays in Pitt Street Mall, forced mouse swim tests in Bondi Pool and a greyhound protest at Wentworth Park. Bailey is also involved in wildlife advocacy campaigns such a koala extinction, Drop Croc and the Nike Kangaroo Massacre. He is a Youth Ambassador for The Plant Based Treaty calling on politicians and councils to recognise the link between animal agriculture and climate change. In this episode, Bailey shares the importance of political parties in bringing about change for animals, transitioning captive dolphins to sea sanctuaries and connecting with nature. https://www.instagram.com/warriorforanimals/
Where the heck have we been Bookshelvers? Well... It's fair to say we've been busy bees. Since we took over PACT it's been a joyus whirling dervish of learning, fun, content creation and teaching. We hope our hiatus hasn't left you audio lonely for top quality dog related pod fun?!So we are back! and this week we are starting our Connecting Communities Series. The idea is based around our very first PACT in person Conference! Yep you heard us. The Bookshelf/PACT team are holding a conference this autumn on October 16th in Winchester and you're all invited. We have some fabulous speakers lined up and we wanted to give you a little taster of them all with a few podcasts to wet your appetites!First up we have the awesome Suzanne Rogers who will be one of our keynote speakers giving tips for everyone in the canine care industry on how to communicate for greater success. This podcast is a real eye opener and is (in itself) full of great ideas to help us all out no matter what field we are in.Suzanne Facts:Suzanne has worked in several very different roles that together have paved the way for being the co-director of HBCA. After graduation she worked in science publishing – initially as a science journalist and later managing several journals. In her spare time she re-qualified in animal behaviour and welfare and gained extensive practical experience with several organisations. She founded Learning About Animals through which she organised educational events and undertook consultancy projects. She is also active as an IAABC-certified horse behaviour consultant.Through extensive travel to developing countries Suzanne gained interest in transport animals and in 2005 joined the Board of the World Association for Transport Animal Welfare and Studies (TAWS). She is co-founder and Programmes Director of Change For Animals Foundation (CFAF), co-founder and Trustee of the Aquarium Welfare Association and Trustee of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA).In 2007, she became the Programmes Manager of the Companion Animal Unit at WSPA (now World Animal Protection). She managed several dog population and working equine programmes. | Giant Panda was Found Eating Meat!Ranger: It was Gnawing at Bones with a Good AppetiteA wild giant panda has been caught on camera gnawing at the bones of a dead takin, an animal similar to a goat antelope found in Northwest China's Shaanxi province. This species of bears, whose ancestor was omnivorous, is believed to sporadically eat dead animals after it was forced to change its diet to bamboo. While counting the number of giant pandas in a field population survey, ranger Li Shuiping and a team from the Foping National Nature Reserve in Shaanxi, took the pictures of a wild giant panda gnawing on the bones of a takin. When we found the panda, it was less than 50 meters away from us. There is no bamboo forest on this large mountain slope so we were wondering what it was eating as we kept observing," Li told Xinhua.“我们发现它时,距离不到50米。这一大片山坡上没有竹林,它能吃啥呢?吃得这么香?”李水平告诉新华社,他们一直在观察它在吃什么。Li mentioned that the "thing" the wild panda was eating turned out to be "the bones of a dead takin that were more than a foot long." 原来,李水平提到野生大熊猫吃的“东西”是一根超过一英尺长的羚牛骨头!"The panda enjoyed its food for about 10 minutes before it dropped the bones and walked slowly into the woods on the hillside and climbed up a big tree," Li said. Researchers also found that the feces of the panda after eating meat were different from the usual bamboo diet. The feces of pandas that usually eat bamboo are called "qingtuan" like the traditional Chinese green rice dumpling. The China Academy Science (CAS) Chengdu Branch explained that they named the droppings after the food for the shape and "fragrance of bamboo." As they collected feces samples they found that, compared with the droppings of the common giant panda, the color of these clusters was gray and white, like a "spindle-shaped lime stick," according to the report. This is the second image of a wild giant panda captured eating meat in the Foping National Nature Reserve. Still, bamboo occupies 99 percent of the catering habits of wild pandas and only in rare cases would they eat meat, according to the CAS. A proper explanation for this sudden meat-eating behaviour is that the animal needs "to absorb other nutrients the body requires when necessary," Sun Quanhui, biologist of the World Animal Protection, told the Global Times on Sunday. Originally carnivore, this species was forced to change its diet to bamboo to adapt to the changing climate and habitat. Yet, experts say that its digestive system still "retains the traits of a carnivore, just like their ancestors." Wild pandas mainly prey on the remains of a wide range of dead animals," mentioned Li Sheng, researcher at Peking University and expert at International Union for Conservation of Nature, adding that there had been several records of wild pandas "eating meat occasionally" in areas around the Qinling Mountains.

As travel borders begin to open post pandemic, some of us might be planning our first holiday in quite a while. On that itinerary might be a wild animal attraction and today we discuss how to ensure we are travelling responsibly when it comes to animal livelihood. Animals globally are suffering at the hand of the tourism industry through degrading entertaining, living conditions, cruel training methods and trauma from their captivity. It's important to remember that not all wild animal attractions are as pleasant as they may seem and to help me explore this topic today is World Animal Protection's season campaigner and spokesperson, Ben Pearson. Ben has more than 24 years of experience advocating for their environment and one of his key campaigns is exposing the hidden cruelties of wildlife tourism, educating Australia and Kiwi travellers and working with tour operators to reduce captive wildlife encounters with the goal of ensuring that wild animals aren't exploited for entertainment. Today's conversation discusses some really encouraging advocacy, but also covers details on animal cruelty that some listeners may find distressing. But I hope you'll still be able to listen and be part of this critical conversation. Ben and I will explore some of the animals that are at the hand of abuse and cruelty in the travel space and how they find themselves there. We then learn how we can avoid contributing to this industry, and be part of the global goal of only encountering animals in the wild living the lives that they were meant to. I hope you enjoy the episode. You can visit World Animal Protection and learn about their work, donate or find out more on being an animal friendly traveller. Right now, more than 70 billion animals are farmed for food each year – two-thirds in conditions that mean they can't move freely or live naturally. Unfortunately, this includes animals like chickens, pigs and cows that are commonly farmed in both Canada and the United States. It's an unfortunate reality that the world isn't going to stop eating animal products overnight. With that in mind, in this week's PlantPod episode, we delve into how we can lobby the government and industry to improve the lives of farm animals at every stage from farming to transportation to slaughter. For this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lynn Kavanagh who is the Farming Campaign Manager for World Animal Protection Canada. Here are some of the questions we delved into: What does factory farming look like in Canada? How can we help improve the lives of farm animals? What legislation does the government have in place to help improve the lives of these animals? Are farmers and industry open to change? What are Ag-Gag laws? Which animals are treated the worst? What are some of the health implications of this unfair treatment to animals? Lynn has been leading animal advocacy campaigns for many years. She is currently the Canadian Farming Campaign Manager for World Animal Protection, an international animal welfare charity with offices in 14 countries. She oversees the organization's farm animal welfare and food systems campaigns to change government legislation, corporate policies, and people's behaviour to improve protection for animals. She received an MSc degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Today's episode features Kelly Dent of World Animal Protection talking about ending the global wildlife trade. The global trade in wildlife is worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually and includes both the legal and illegal trade in animals. While the Convention on International Trade in Endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora boasts a membership of 183 countries, many argue it is insufficient, unsustainable and ineffective to protect vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species. The system is full of loopholes which allow trade in wildlife to continue unchecked, with very little ability to differentiate between legal and illegal trade. Calls to end the global wildlife trade have been growing through this pandemic, not only due to the likelihood that COVID-19 is a zoonotic pathogen, meaning it comes from animals, but also due to the sheer cost of the pandemic to human life and economy. As the population grows, pressure on wildlife and wild places also grows, meaning more interaction between both and more likelihood of animal / human conflict and disease transmission. I invited Kelly Dent to chat about why we need a blanket ban on the trade in wildlife. Kelly is the Director of External Engagement with World Animal Protection and a lifelong activist and has 25 years experience lobbying and campaigning on climate change, poverty, corporate accountability, trade, labour and human rights around the world. Kelly is reading 'Such a Fun Age' by Kiley Reid; 'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy; 'Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows' by Melanie Joy; 'Me and White Supremacy' by Layla F Saad. Kelly is listening to 7AM; 'Nice White Parents' New York Times; 'Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power' by Nakkiah Lui & Miranda Tapsell; Rabbit Hole, New York Times.

Island life, island time, there are all kinds of phrases we use that evoke that special feeling of islands - be they tropical or otherwise, small islands are exotic places to visit and I've got such a long list of islands I've loved, and long to return to. Turns out I'm not alone and in Episode 204 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I chat with three guests about some of their own favourite island experiences and what it is they love about island travel. First up is Seana Smith who, despite being born in a "small, freezing Scottish town", discovered that she could indeed travel to far-flung islands and describes experiences in Africa and Asia. Next, Ben Pearson takes us to Indonesia and has a fun story he likes to tell about a particularly famous island, home to a certain dragon ... Finally, I chat with Nan Caple who has spent many years returning to Kangaroo Island in South Australia, a special place that has captivated her family and turned into something more than just a spot they love to spend their holidays. Seeing animals when we travel is high on many people's must-do lists - but are we doing it responsibly? Responsible animal tourism is one of those areas I'm constantly learning more about: for example, I still remember the moment, perhaps six or seven years ago, when I first learnt about why we shouldn't ride elephants (and if you're not sure, listen on!). Animal tourism is definitely an area where as we learn more about it, we can do better, so I'm hoping this episode is as enlightening for you as it was for me to make it. First up, I chat with Julia Salnicki, a zoologist who has spent many years living in Zimbabwe and Botswana doing research on painted dogs, spotted hyaenas and elephants. We talk about lion cubs, elephants and gorillas - some good and some bad stories! Next, I talk to Ben Pearson of World Animal Protection, first asking him about a pet hate of mine - quokka selfies - and then asking him for some more guidelines on how we can be responsible travellers in relation to animals. Finally, I speak with Louise Southerden about the specific case of riding with camels - as that seemed quite a grey area for me. This episode is brought to you by Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com! As the world continues to battle a global pandemic that originated from contact with a wild animal, it seems timely to contemplate humanity's relationship to wild animals. So this week on Chickeeps, Evy speaks to longtime animal welfare activist and vegan, Katie Tostevin-Hobbs of World Animal Protection about what it means to create safe and respectful boundaries between people and wild animals. We discuss why it's unethical to use animals in entertainment, what wild animals really shouldn't be kept as pets, and also why some animal welfare organisations choose not to take a publicly vegan stance. Katie shares how a love for animals from a young age inspired her to devote her life to protecting them. How one man was left a wooly monkey in his inheritance and how it lead to the founding of a monkey sanctuary and protection for monkeys in the pet trade. What is meant by ‘wild animals in entertainment' and does it always involve animal cruelty? Seeing the problem from all perspectives: Katie explains how the mahouts and exployees of elephant riding companies are victims to the system too, and what World Animal Protection do to help them find a new livelihood. How to open a dialogue with people who work in the animals in entertainment sector. What to do when you see a friend posting about swimming with dolphins? What's the definition of a wild animal that shouldn't be kept as a pet? What is the most ethical thing to do if you already have a wild animal as a pet? Katie explains the Promise4Wildlife and how important it is to shift public perception of wild animals in entertainment. Why Katie chooses to work in animal welfare, and the impact WAP has on animals in factory farming systems. Will World Animal Protection ever take a publicly vegan stance? This week on The ChickPeeps we take time out of our vegan-focused discourse to discuss the wildfires that broke out across Australia causing unimaginable devastation to Australia's wildlife. Evy speaks to Simone Clarke and Lena Aalby of World Animal Protection Australia to get an insight into what daily life is like now for the animal advocates in Australia, working to protect perhaps the most vulnerable victims of disasters. Simone and Lena share about the challenges faced in recovering from the fires, what's happening to the rescued animals and why they believe in prioritising long-term recovery work to best protect animals in disasters. Also on this episode… Simone and Lena discuss how charities spring into action and coordinate their strategies to approach all aspects of protecting animals affected by disasters. Lena shares about the emergency relief work she personally partakes in to rescue and rehabilitate injured and orphaned animals. 1 billion animals perished: Is this statistic accurate and what does it mean for the future of the Australian wildlife? Can these animals be rehabilitated and released into the wild after so much of the land was destroyed? The resilience of the Australian landscape. Why World Animal Protection believe in advocating for policy change as part of their strategy to protect animals. What is the point of saving farm animals affected by disasters when ultimately people are going to kill them to eat? Is veganism included in World Animal Protection's disaster prevention strategy? Is fundraising the only thing we can do to help Australia heal? Isn't climate change only going to make the fires increase and is there hope for handling this problem? Oceans generate half of the oxygen we breathe, supply us with food and provide livelihoods – in short, they play a critical social, environmental and economic role for us. But our oceans are in danger. Plastic accumulating in them has become a global crisis and at current rates, plastic is expected to outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050. Abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear – or “ghost gear” – makes up 10% of the plastic pollution in oceans every year. And by weight, ghost gear accounts for 70% of all floating macro-plastic debris. So, how is ghost gear impacting our oceans? What are seafood companies doing to mitigate negative impacts of ghost gear? And what can investors do on this critical issue? Join the PRI’s Head of Environmental Issues, Gemma James, as she delves into the topic. Gemma is joined this episode by guests Rory Sullivan, Co-Founder and Director at Chronos Sustainability, and Lynn Kavanagh, Campaign Manager at World Animal Protection. Christine Rose is a Campaign Advisor for World Animal Protection, continuing her decades-long advocacy for better protection for Māui and Hector's dolphins. In her role in this global animal welfare organisation, Christine applies her knowledge of politics and love of philosophy into 'the new frontier' of animal ethics, working to move the world for animals' welfare and rights. The New Zealand Government has now released the public consultation draft for its Threat Management Plan, TMP, for Māui and Hector's dolphins – New Zealand’s only endemic dolphin species, and among the world’s most endangered. The proposed plan doesn't go far enough she says. It fails to protect all habitat for all Māui and Hector's sub-populations. You can make a submission below by August 19, 2019. MAUI AND HECTOR’S DOLPHINS Māui and Hector’s are the smallest (and among the rarest) dolphins in the world and are only found in New Zealand. These much-loved dolphins are friendly and often interact with surfers and swimmers. Māui and Hector’s dolphins are a New Zealand “taonga” (a highly valued treasure) and are celebrated in our culture and art. They deserve our respect and protection. The official population estimate for Māui dolphins is about 57 and, in 2018 alone, at least four Māui’s dolphins were found dead on North Island beaches. Some of the small South Island Hector’s dolphin sub-populations number as low as 40 individuals. The problem is simple – much of the Hector’s and Māui habitat is unprotected from human threats and human populations. Areas they live in, travel through and need to survive have limited or no protection. Because of the fishing activity within their habitat, dolphins continue to get caught in nets and drown – sometimes whole families. WHAT IS THE TMP - THREAT MANAGEMENT PLAN The TMP is a plan used by the Department of Conservation and Fisheries New Zealand to help make management decisions around threats towards protected species in New Zealand. The first Hector's and Māui dolphin TMP was created in 2007 to evaluate and manage the risks from threats such as fishing, tourism, vessel strike, pollution, climate change, and disease. Protection measures were established to help protect Māui and Hector’s dolphins. The Govt only reviews its Maui and Hector's dolphin Threat Management Plan once every 5-10 years and these dolphins are on the brink of extinction. There are only about 57 adult Maui dolphins and some of the small South Island subpopulations are even lower in number. The proposed TMP doesn't cover the whole dolphin range - it misses out off-shore range to 100m deep, and subpopulations on the North Island East Coast, between the North and South Islands, Marlborough Sounds, gaps around the East and South Coasts of the South Island. It allows seabed mining and oil and gas exploration in most of the dolphins' habitat. it fails to impose a rigorous and robust monitoring programme. It allows 80-100 dolphins to be killed as by-catch every year. It overstates the costs to the fishing industry of full protection, and understates the benefits according to the work that has been commissioned by World Animal Protection. It would seem that cameras need to be installed on all commercial fishing vessels. GILL NETS ARE THE MAIN PROBLEM Fishing nets have killed all but a third of the Hector's and Maui dolphins. It's time to stop! Gillnets are the most serious threat, followed by trawling. Scientific research has proven that the current protection measures are NOT enough. Fishing nets have killed all but a third of the Hector's and Maui dolphins. It's time to stop! Gillnets are the most serious threat, followed by trawling. SO FEW DOLPHINS LEFT About 45 Hector's dolphins live in Porpoise Bay in the Catlins, 42 off Otago, two or three hundred in Te Waewae Bay on the south coast, and about 200 off the north coast of the South Island. Hector's dolphin is rapidly following in the footsteps of Maui dolphin, with their populations becoming more and more fragmented. One after the other small, local population has dwindled, endangering the species as a whole. These dolphins range to 20 nautical miles offshore, so if protection is extended to all waters less than 100 metres deep we would see the populations grow and recover from the losses they have suffered over the last four decades. This would stop the continued dolphin by-catch (entanglement in fishing gear) problem. WORLD ANIMAL PROTECTION Christine also spoke about the four aspects of the work done by World Animal Protection. Animals in Communities Animals play a vital role in communities worldwide – and we need to protect them. Christine explains that they help governments to manage dog populations humanely and to vaccinate against rabies, instead of culling dogs. They share advice on responsible pet ownership. They prevent working animals being overworked and abused. They do whatever is necessary to protect animals in communities worldwide, including at home here in New Zealand. Animals in Farming Christine says, “The majority of animals farmed for food live in conditions that cause suffering and stress. It’s time to rethink farming. The treatment of farm animals is the world’s biggest animal welfare issue – and it’s getting bigger. By 2050, livestock production will be twice what it was in 2000. Right now, more than 70 billion animals are farmed for food each year – two-thirds in conditions that mean they can’t move freely or live naturally. We campaign for progress at every stage – from farming to transportation to slaughter.” Animals in Disasters It is necessary to move fast to protect animals affected by disasters, reducing suffering and helping governments and communities to recover and rebuild. Animals in the Wild World Animal Protection works around the globe to protect and save world animals, and to keep wild animals in the wild, where they belong. They try and stop elephants from being ridden and allow them to be wild animals, for example. She's a writer often focusing on environmental ethics, and a ceramic artist and painter, inspired by nature and the ocean. MAKE A TMP SUBMISSION You can make a submission by either copying the submission below, or adapting it to one of your own, or sign this submission from World Animal Protection – but time is short. Consultation: Hector’s and Māui Dolphin Threat Management Plan Submission form: Contact details - phone number, email Email to: DolphinTMP@doc.govt.nz by August 19 2019 (Thanks to Suzanne Vincent for writing this.) “The proposal falls far short of what is required. The best options described do not even approach the levels of protection for Maui dolphins recommended by the International Whaling Commission and the IUCN, or in the Green and Labour Party conservation policies. The options proposed to protect Hector’s dolphins fall even shorter, even though these dolphins are also endangered. It is essential that the following measures are taken: A total ban on set nets and trawls from both the entire Hector’s dolphin and the Māui dolphin habitat - to be applied in all waters less than 100 metres depth: Large numbers of these dolphins are dying in fishing nets. For there to be any chance of these species recovering and thriving, human induced deaths must be reduced to effectively zero for both species. For this reason, only dolphin-safe fishing methods must be used in their habitat. Fishing is the most urgent threat, and these measures must be taken swiftly and decisively: it is not acceptable for fishing interests to prevail in this situation. Research commissioned by World Animal Protection found that in comparison to the benefits to be gained from full protection throughout the full Maui and Hector’s habitat, the costs to the fishing industry are minor. Cameras must be installed on all commercial fishing vessels to ensure compliance with the restrictions, and to ensure that bycatch is reported accurately: Monitoring is low in some areas, and more dolphins are being caught than is known; it is very important that we have an accurate picture of what is happening Of these threats, seismic surveying and seabed mining pose the greatest risk to Hector’s and Māui dolphins. There must be an outright ban on seabed mining, oil exploration and drilling from the entire Hector’s and Māui dolphin habitat The severe pressures from noise and seabed disturbance from the activities of oil exploration, drilling and seabed mining, including sediment discharge, must be eradicated from the dolphins’ entire habitat. It is not sufficient to impose restrictions only for new activities, the threats must be removed from areas covered by existing permits. Government must take clear action to prohibit all activities that create disturbance to the habitat, and which could easily result in the loss of these species. Thank you for the opportunity to make this submission.”

This episode we talk about a very serious issue. Unfortunately, this issue is funded by tourism. We talk to Ben Pearson, the Senior Campaigns Manager from the Australian branch of World Animal Protection to talk about Animal cruelty. Every year over one million Aussies visit Bali. Have you taken a photo with a Tiger? Have you sat on top of an elephant? Unfortunately, you have contributed to supporting animal cruelty. This episode is to inform you on why it's not okay. I did it many years ago and it has haunted me ever since. It was recommended to me as something fun to do in Thailand, (before the world of social media existed). It's selfish for us as humans to use animals for our enjoyment. It's not okay. Animals are being taken out of the wild and used as entertainment for tourists. Ben talks about the treatment behind the scenes at these types of places in Indonesia and Thailand. We hear about the process used to make these dangerous animals pose for a photo or allow humans to sit on their backs. It's horrific and everyone should listen to this episode, you do not want to find yourself contributing to this type of animal cruelty. We need to put a stop to this type of treatment. We also talk about how you can help and safe way to see animals. Knowledge is power. Attorney-General's Department: Would you risk your life to save a pet? Australian floods and bushfires are replete with anecdotes of people risking their lives – even losing their lives – trying to save a cat or a dog. This episode focusses exclusively on animals in disaster planning. We talk to two survivors of catastrophic disasters about the role animals played in their decisions. Two researchers share findings on the challenges to emergency services of people’s bond with animals, and we talk to ACT authorities about how they’ve worked with horse owners to avoid a repeat of some of the tragedies of the 2003 Canberra firestorm. World Animal Protection talks about their part in developing national principles that help emergency management authorities address this challenge.
Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
To start out the new year we’re taking a look at some serious news – Canada’s failing grade for animal welfare and protections. Late last year, World Animal Protection unveiled their first ever API – or Animal Protection Index – an ingenious way of measuring individual nation’s efforts at protecting animals. Canada received a failing grade – lower than some third world countries – causing a media firestorm. Also late in 2014, the International Fund for Animal Welfare announced that Canada was failing to meet its international obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. This was incidentally timed with a study from Canadian scientists showing that our country's efforts to protect already at-risk or endangered species are critically failing.
