On a déjà hâte ! The First South Korean Single Malt, or, An Eagle, a Unicorn, and a Tiger Walk Into a Bar Ki One (formerly known as Three Societies) was founded in 2020 with a simple goal: be the first Korean single malt distillery and set a benchmark for what Korean single malt could be. Given the reaction to their releases, one can only say well done. They are the first Korean single malt on the market, with three core expressions (the Eagle, Unicorn, and Tiger) and special releases exploring different parts of their components or playing with finishes. What could Korean single malt be? Nestled on the north face of the mountains 30 minutes from Seoul, this distillery gets no direct sunlight in the winter and can swing between -4C and 36C throughout the year. Bryan came from a brewing background, Andrew Shand from a distilling family. Together, they've set a Korean "profile" that hearkens back to their heritage while highlighting something synonymous with Korea: spice. Make no mistake: whether at 6 months or 5 years, this is a spice-forward single malt, evoking kimchi and gochujang pepper alongside the classic single malt by which they were inspired. As the first, they had to chart a path, and we get into an unusually detailed description of how taxation and regulation can lag behind industry growth and, if unchanged, hamper it. This was Bryan's first longform English interview for Ki One - I hope you enjoy! Thank you to Bryan for entering the whiskey ring! _________________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring The Bottle Share Club - the $25/month Patreon level - is SOLD OUT! This episode is raw, real, and straight from the heart. Recorded on the fly as Cortney prepares to travel and be with her grandpa (who is currently in the hospital) this conversation explores the depths of grief, the cycles of life, death, and rebirth, and what it means to truly feel it all. Cortney reflects on: The gift of being alcohol-free during emotional seasons & the power of sitting with grief without numbing Why “Glōwing Up” isn't just about basking in the light - it's about having the courage to face the dark (the pain, the shadow & the messy parts we'd rather avoid) How facing the reality of death can give us a newfound appreciation for life. How exploring our shadows helps us step into our light more fully This episode is a reminder that life is precious & a true glōw up doesn't come from pretending life is perfect - but in the moments you choose not to hide from the dark. If you're navigating grief or loss, you're not alone. This one's for you.
Cop mode, black tar CBD, and the USA Tour Help 2015 Facebook group. Patton Magee (The Nude Party, Patton Magee) "For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP, and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. In fact, they could count Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, and Orville Peck as vocal supporters, which led to support slots for each. Soon, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Shaky Knees became the norm. In late 2020, The Nude Party released its sophomore album, Midnight Manor, which debuted at #1 on the Alternative New Artists Album Chart. The sextet was unable to tour behind it and compared its release to skipping a stone over a raging river. A byproduct was that it showed the band that on their third album, they couldn't lean on their tried-and-true method of testing out new material live and then hunker down to record. Instead of sitting around, the band got busy. Setting up shop in their Upstate New York headquarters, the group used the funds they'd saved and spent a year building a studio space out of a barn. Tired of paying for studio time and being rushed, The Nude Party methodically worked at their own pace. Out were the sessions lasting a strict handful of days. In were impromptu writing moments and picking every sound as they went along. When the band met the Tampa based engineer Matthew Horner, they discovered that they had the opposite problems: Matthew had a collection of incredible gear with no studio and The Nude Party had a great new studio with no gear. So they invited him to move his equipment up to the Catskills to record an album together. Such was the origin of the band's third album, Rides On. Unlike their first two albums, The Nude Party decided to produce Rides On themselves. With their new space and the help of Horner, The Nude Party had as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. The lack of pressure allowed them to record over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs. Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. It's also the most homegrown and the most organic record The Nude Party has created to date. Working on the album themselves allowed for a democratic process where each band member could take a fuller role in producing the songs they wrote. There was some initial trepidation about there being too many cooks in the kitchen. But as is the benefit of owning your own studio space, time was not a factor. In turn, it allowed for the band's ideas to blossom, everyone's voice be taken into account and create an exciting, collaborative vibe. The relaxed atmosphere of the sessions, and arriving with only loosely structured material, allowed the band to thrive in the studio. It also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases, as best demonstrated by the title track, “Ride On.” Sonically, the song is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but its lyrics are mini-vignettes where Magee sings about persevering through adversity. The twangy, blues-drenched licks of the title track, the breezy desert dust encapsulated by the ‘70s infused “Hard Times,” the Shaun Couture-led “Sold Out of Love,” the swinging ‘60s garage vibes of “Cherry Red Boots,” which captures the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for — and showcases their growth as a band. As does expanding the band's sonic palate with a cover of Dr. John's “Somebody Tryin' To Hoodoo Me.” It would have been easy to stick to the New Orleans musician's format, but the band showed off their prowess with their own darker, electric version of the deep cut. The Nude Party coalesced and embraced the spirit of collaboration. They're excited to begin the next chapter of their career. At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in, the band continues to persevere." Heritage, Grain, and Grit: Matt McKay Revives the London Distillery Company The London Distillery Company - TLDC - has, TLDR, had a rather rough two centuries. Two failed ventures, one in the early 1800s and one in the 2010s, the last ending in 2020 with a few dozen casks remaining, sitting in a warehouse for several years unloved. Enter Matt McKay, a Whiskey Ring Podcast guest way back in Episode 70. Having recently departed Bimber and Dunphail Distilleries, Matt was looking for a project, something that would expand his already extensive whisky knowledge and give him a new challenge in the production space where he felt most at home. Those few dozen casks held some rye, a lot of single malt, and, more than anything, opportunities. In his "distillery without walls," Matt is slowly and methodically rebuilding TLDC into a respectable company known for its own product (which remains quite limited but also nicely aged) and for blending. The Renascence was a release of their own stock, while the just-released Golden Union blends and celebrates English whisky from multiple distilleries into a harmonious expression. Matt is unabashedly nerdy (seriously, listen to our previous episode, we got deep in the weeds), and he loves what he does. I can't wait to taste these releases and see what he does. Let's check back in a few years when they're farther down the runway.... La Maison du Whisky, Version Française, and Everything About French Whisky I love "visiting" new countries through the podcast. Granted, France we had technically touched before through Brenne, but I'd heard that there was so much more to learn about the French culture of drinking and spirit production - so who better to talk to than Marion Attardi and Matthieu Acar, of La Maison & Velier and La Maison du Whisky, respectively. Marion and Matthieu are subject matter giants in whiskies generally, but both bring a special expertise to French whisky. While long a top market for Scotch single malt (drinking more per capita than any other nation), France has only recently begun distilling its own whiskies and single malts (~1983 is a general starting point). Yet despite starting domestic production around the same time as the earliest American craft distillers, French producers have remained mostly small and independent. Only the oldest and largest - Armorik, for example) have made it to the US market, and many haven't made it outside of France or the EU at most. So, why do an episode about French whisky if you can't taste much of it? Because soon enough you'll be able to - and I guarantee you're going to love it. Whether it's a distillery that grew out of a brewery, one doing their own take on peat, one using local wine casks from Bordeaux or calvados from Normandy, the variety is astounding and delicious. Three Version Française expressions are available in the US, with more on the way. You can also shop through La Maison du Whisky, The Whisky Exchange, and many other international retailers to find gems from all over France. This was just the opening conversation - there will be many more! Especially if Matthieu's compendium on the first 40 years of French whisky gets an English translation... Thank you to Marion and Matthieu for entering the Whiskey Ring! ________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring The Bottle Share Club - the $25/month Patreon level - is SOLD OUT! Scottish Born, Colorodo Bred Show Notes and Reviews Colorado was long a bastion of the craft beer scene, and out of that grew a now-booming craft whiskey industry. Among the first of those whiskeymakers was Boulder Spirits (part of Vapor Distillery), who imported Alastair Brogan in 2012. His vision was clear: to create the best American single malt whiskey possible, while honoring traditional methods and embracing the distinctive Colorado environment. The Colorado microclimate plays a crucial role in Boulder Spirits' unique flavor profile. With significant temperature and humidity swings, whiskey ages differently here than in Scotland or Kentucky, experiencing higher evaporation rates that concentrate flavors more rapidly. While their American Single Malt garners the headlines, they also make a fantastic bourbon, one that despite its relatively low proof (88) was full-bodied and flavorful. It confirmed my suspicions (piqued after chatting with Chattanooga) that I love malted bourbons, where malt is the secondary grain rather than rye or wheat. It holds up at a lower proof so much better than the other two. Education remains the greatest barrier to growth - while we whiskey nerds love American Single Malts and different mashbills, the wider audience isn't always aware that ASM is even a thing, let alone a malted bourbon. That education is helped by collaborating with folks like Lost Lantern (that's how I first heard about Boulder) and putting out high-powered releases like hazmat single malt in armagnac casks. I missed them by just a day while in Denver, but won't miss them the next time. Thank you to Alastair for entering the whiskey ring! _________________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring The Bottle Share Club - the $25/month Patreon level - is SOLD OUT! If you pressed play, the Holy Spirit led you here on purpose. In this episode, I'm holding up the mirror ….not to show you what you lack, but to remind you of what you carry. You've been chosen, set apart, and positioned for such a time as this. Let this word speak to your spirit, stir your faith, and call you back into divine alignment.
Why Not, What If? Georgie Bell and husband Fabrizio Leoni co-founded The Heart Cut, an independent bottler, with an eye towards the world. The question is relatively simple: how can we connect whisky enthusiasts with some of the most exciting, innovative, and deserving-of-attention distilleries? More than half of which - in a telling coincidence - have been Whiskey Ring Podcast guests? Georgie and Fab are globe-trotting whiskey hunters, pulling 16 exceptional casks/releases from distilleries across eight countries in just their first 20-ish months. From Finnish rye to Israeli single malts, they're telling stories through spirits that most drinkers have never encountered. Their approach: direct partnerships, total transparency, and a commitment to showcasing the "why not, what if" spirit of craft distillers around the world. But this isn't just about selling bottles. The Heart Cut is building a whiskey community, breaking down barriers with accessible tasting notes, virtual tastings (starting with the last few releases), and a mission to educate. Bell and Leoni's vision inspires exploration, giving us nerds a healthy mix of whiskies that both represent the heart of what a distillery can do while also pushing its boundaries. If you're new to whisky, you'll be able to enjoy the pours. If you're deep in the fandom, every bit of information they can possibly provide is either on the label or the website. This is an IB built on the knowledge, passion, experience, and wisdom of two people who know their spirits. We spend a few minutes just on Georgie's resume simply to highlight how extensive her knowledge base is - it's that impressive. Finally, I want to acknowledge the introductions Georgie made after the interview was over. The best IBs don't work as firewalls but as gateways. If a bottling makes me want to know more about a distillery, that's the best job an IB can do, and The Heart Cut does it in spades. Who knows - within a few months, I may have completed the collection, having all The Heart Cut partners on the podcast... Being smaller releases, these won't usually be available in the US, but they are through both Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange. I'm picking up a bottle of the M&H (the pomegranate wine cask and Dead Sea Apex release are my two favorites, and The Heart Cut combined them!) and probably 2-5 others given the chance. Thank you to Georgie for entering the Whiskey Ring, and for the multiple introductions she made after the interview! _________________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring The Bottle Share Club - the $25/month Patreon level - is SOLD OUT! And what in the WORLD are we doing being barefoot in the subway at the end?! PLUS: Be on the lookout for the American Crocodile Dundee, Alligator Johnson! 313: Ellie's Dad - life lessons, a quiz, and some "jokes" What are the lyrics to Happy Birthday? What is the correct term for male swimwear? Who is Jennifer Lopez? Ellie's Dad knows the answer to none of these questions, and we are here to mock him for it. Yes, it's a Father's Day Special as Jim returns to the podcast. We discuss Crystal Palace's FA cup win, aka the best day of his life. He shares the number one nugget of wisdom he's learned after 78 years on the planet, and Ellie comes up with a new plan to monetise him in his old age. There are some quiz questions, and Confessions involving a Turkish airport, two clothes steamers, and the Virgin Mary. Listen right to the end for a classic Dad joke. Trigger warning: this episode includes several instances of Jim singing, plus an impression of Joe McElderry by Ellie. If you have been affected by any of the singing on this podcast, we can only apologise. Ellie's Dad isn't on social media. But you can follow him around at our gigs. WE ARE ON OUR! Our guest for this episode is the awesome Daisy-May Hudson. She tells us about her experience of homelessness, and her journey from documentary maker to film director. We discuss Daisy-May's latest movie, Lollipop, which tells the story of a woman fighting to get her children back, and a friendship that's rekindled along the way. It's out on the 13 June and it's absolutely brilliant. There's also some chat about Daisy-May's documentaries - Halfway, which she made when her family was made homeless, and Holloway, about former inmates of the infamous women's prison. Holloway is out on 20 June. Of course, we finish off with some Scummy Mummy Confessions. Daisy-May tries to reframe Helen's tale of pissing herself as a celebration of freedom, and Ellie nearly pisses herself laughing. Follow Daisy-May on instagram @daisymay_hudson. Leading the Revival of Maryland Rye This week on the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I got to cross off another long-awaited guest: Sagamore Spirit. Situated harborside in downtown Baltimore, Sagamore's campus is among the more beautiful I've visited. The 5-acre plot centers around Penny, their 40' copper column still, which has (almost) single-handedly managed their transition from MGP-sourced rye to 100% Maryland-distilled rye, which now fills the vast majority of their bottles. Few brands have moved from sourcing to their own distillate as seamlessly or as transparently. Along the way, Sagamore Spirit (no "s" because they'll only ever make one) has played with numerous finishes, including award-winning port cask and unique mead and beer finishes from nearby partners. Not to mention their one-off Calvados-finished Rye, which I still rank as one of the best pours I've ever had. Sagamore is no longer alone in their promotion of Maryland Rye, with previous guests like Baltimore Spirits Co. also flying the banner, but it's hard to argue that Sagamore isn't leading the way, whether by volume, shelf space, or distribution reach. Ryan Norwood has been with Sagamore for several years and joins me to talk hospitality, building a rye brand for Maryland starting with Indiana distillate, and how their ongoing connection to the Vanderbilt-owned Sagamore Farm informs their branding, bottles, and their surprising decision to leave horses off the label. Thank you to Ryan for entering the Whiskey Ring! Is being a restaurant reviewer the best job in the world? Where's the best place to book a table right now? And how did a picky eater become an award-winning food critic? Jimi discusses his time working for Zoo and Maxim magazine in the noughties, and how he feels about his role in lad culture now. Ellie confesses to her own sexist contribution, and claims it was a different time. “Hold on to your hats, folks, Chris Cabin likes this movie!” - Eric On this week's episode, we're going back to The Prequels on the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza to do a proper episode on Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith! How great is that Count Dooku exit at the beginning? How catty are all the sarcastic Battle Droids? Does this movie have the best-looking space battles in all the prequels? How funny is R2 lighting those guys on fire after whizzing oil all over them? And, yeah, that Vader shout at the end of the movie is still one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments in all of Star Wars! PLUS: Palpatine blurs out his Zoom background when making secret calls from the toilet! Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christian, Natalie Portman, Ian McDiarmid, Jimmy Smits, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Daniels, Christopher Lee, Bruce Spence, Silas Carson, Temuera Morrison, Kenny Baker, and Frank Oz as the voice of Yoda; directed by George Lucas. “Both [Cage] and George C. Scott [in Hardcore] share the same forehead sweat…” - Andrew On this week's very special episode, we're celebrating EPISODE 800 with a very sleaze-tastic conversation on Joel Schumacher's 8MM! How funny is it the screenwriter got upset that the content was toned down from his more hardcore vision? Was Cage's Tom Welles in over his head with this case or was he just the man for the job? How funny is that scene with Gandolfini trying to skip town carrying several boxes of pornography? How great is Joaquin in this performance as Max California? And how terrifying is that final showdown at Casa de Machine? PLUS: “Marc Maron” asks Machine who his guys are! 8MM stars Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, James Gandolfini, Peter Stormare, Anthony Heald, Catherine Keener, Myra Carter, Amy Morton, and Chris Bauer as Machine; directed by Joel Schumacher.
