Welcome back to the Working Perspectives Podcast for our most outrageous game yet: Guess The News!
“If a single camera setting can change how you see yourself, what else are you missing when you look at the world around you?” In this eye-opening episode of The JB and Sandy Show, JB, Sandy, and Tricia invite listeners to see the familiar in a whole new light—starting with the perfect selfie. Inspired by a viral Brendan Fraser moment, the hosts reveal a simple iPhone trick that transforms even the most “unphotogenic” among us. Tricia confesses, “I hope I'm the mirror version of me and not the photo version of me,” as the crew experiments with portrait mode, contour lighting, and the elusive timer feature, blending humor and humility in their quest for the ultimate self-portrait. But the episode quickly zooms out from the personal to the global. How dirty—or downright filthy—is Austin compared to the world's most notorious cities? The team dives into a surprising list of the filthiest places on earth, debating whether Budapest, Paris, or Las Vegas deserve their reputations. Tricia, a seasoned traveler, shares, “There were definitely some spots where you're like, hmm, smells like pee right here. But I mean, no worse than…New York or New Orleans.” The conversation is peppered with stories of neighborhood clean-up heroes, the realities of urban life, and the quirks of city rankings. From there, the show takes a nostalgic and sometimes hilarious turn into schoolyard memories—when “getting a lick” from the principal was a real possibility—and the strange wisdom of the Farmer's Almanac. The hosts question the science (or lack thereof) behind long-range weather predictions, marveling at the Almanac's “secret formula” and the enduring power of folklore. “They claim an accuracy rate of 80 to 85 percent. I'm going with Jim Spencer over the farmer man,” Sandy jokes, as the group debates whether to trust meteorologists or the bushiness of a squirrel's tail.Other highlights include:The world's cleanest cities and the surprising return of caning in Singapore.Animal instincts and what squirrels can teach us about preparing for winter.Tornado drills, childhood fears, and the unpredictability of Texas weather. With sharp wit, relatable stories, and a dash of curiosity, this episode challenges listeners to look beyond the surface—whether it's a selfie, a city, or a weather forecast. You'll laugh, you'll reminisce, and you might just see the world a little differently.Notable Quotes & Memorable Moments“I hope I'm the mirror version of me and not the photo version of me.”“There were definitely some spots where you're like, hmm, smells like pee right here.”“They claim an accuracy rate of 80 to 85 percent. I'm going with Jim Spencer over the farmer man.”“You ever try to find water with a Y-shaped stick? Yeah, exactly. Right?”Call-to-Action Enjoyed the show? There is a renewed call for the Minister responsible for animal welfare to be stripped of his portfolio over allegations of an "egregious conflict of interest". Animal rights organisation SAFE believes the Associate Minister for Agriculture, Andrew Hoggard's close personal ties to farming significantly compromise his decision making when it comes to the welfare of animals. The Minister has ditched the previous government's committment to ban farrowing crates for sows from this month. SAFE's Debra Ashton spoke to Lisa Owen.
In this lighthearted episode of The Constance Messmer Podcast I explore the real mechanics of animal communication through the lens of the 11 Soul Senses. From playful dogs to wise cats, stubborn flies, and energy-sensitive cows, I'll share personal stories from my own life and my book _Some Dogs Talk_ to illustrate how animals respond—or sometimes don't respond—to psychic connection.

6/8. The Great Slaughter: Audubon's Regret and the Lewis and Clark Grizzly Massacre — Dan Flores — The opening of the American West initiated an unprecedented destruction of animal populations. Flores documents that John James Audubon, while initially killing wildlife subjects for his ornithological artwork, eventually expressed profound regret regarding the systematic destruction of mammals including buffalo herds. Flores notes that the Lewis and Clark Expedition mirrored prevailing colonial attitudes; Meriwether Lewis permitted subordinates to transform grizzly bearhunting into recreational sport, resulting in at least half of the 37 encountered bears being killed without apparent practical justification, representing callous wastage of irreplaceable fauna.

Despite the tight margins, there are still people that want to enter production agriculture! Tay Fadtke with Marbleseed says it may not be large-scale farming at first, but it's a beginning. Marbleseed has created a Farmer-to-Farmer exchange program that allows those starters to be mentored by someone who's been in production agriculture for a while. Fadtke tells Pam Jahnke that it's a year-long program that addresses not only farming practices but also financing guidance. Wisconsin's got some powerful storms headed its way starting tonight. Stu Muck says that some areas of the state could pick up between 6-10 inches of new snow, making travel hazardous at best. No doubt many people are thinking about possible end-of-the-year donations. Kiley Allan helps educate potential donors about what to know when it comes to donating to animal rescue groups. Names and titles can be deceiving. She chats with Hannah Thompson-Weeman, executive director of the Animal Ag Alliance about some of the posers asking for your money, and the real agenda they're promoting. Ed Elfmann, Senior Vice President of Agriculture and Rural Banking Policy, with the American Bankers Association says there's been policy developments in Washington, D.C. that might encourage ag lenders to engage a little more aggressively on farm real estate loans. Stephanie Hoff talks with him about the ACRE Act which provides a 25% tax break to banks on the interest income they earn from new farm real estate loans. The primary goal is for banks to pass the savings on to farmers by offering lower interest rates on qualified loans. The ACRE Act is now permanent law after being included in the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," marking a significant legislative win for the ABA, which has worked on versions of this for three decades. Ever wonder what the very first animal on Earth was? Scientists believe they've finally figured it out, and it's not what you'd expect! It wasn't a dinosaur or a giant sea creature—it was a simple, jelly-like organism called a comb jelly. These tiny, shimmering creatures existed over 500 million years ago and paved the way for all animals today. What's mind-blowing is how their simple bodies and nervous systems can still teach us about evolution. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Howdy, Newsies! In wacky world news this month, we dive deep into the high-tech efforts being used to save the world's coral reefs – from water robots to underwater speakers. But that's not all. In nature news… what started as a small national prize is now a global beauty pageant for birds. Find out what country and what bird has taken the crown. In Europe a centuries‑old tradition meets modern city life, as thousands of animals march straight through a bustling street in Spain. Here's a clue: baaaahhh. Heard the one about the stolen skull being returned? Oh, you will if you hear this episode. And as if those two previous stories aren't odd enough, you gotta hear the one about spiders in a stinky cave – thousands and thousands of them!

I have a t-shirt subscription. Actually, I have two successful (and very profitable) t-shirt subscriptions: my T-Shirt Club and Tees 4 Teachers. And I'm not the only one growing thriving t-shirt subscriptions. LOTS of members of Launch Your Box are finding huge success with their own t-shirt subscriptions. With all this t-shirt subscription talk, you might be wondering if starting a t-shirt subscription is right for you. In this episode, I'm sharing six reasons why you should consider starting a t-shirt subscription. 1. A T-shirt subscription has low start-up costs compared to other products. T-shirts range from $2-$7. Printing can be done in-house or outsourced. There is no need for expensive boxes - t-shirts can be shipped in poly mailers. 2. T-shirts are a wardrobe staple. Everyone wears t-shirts. T-shirts are consumable - they are used (worn) for a while and then replaced. T-shirts can be dressed up or worn casually. 3. T-shirt subscriptions can be seasonal/holiday/theme-based. Any niche can have a t-shirt subscription. Launch Your Box member t-shirt subscriptions include: Career-focused tees Inspirational/self-care tees Tees for artists/crafters Snarky tees Animal/pet-themed tees 4. T-shirt subscriptions provide recurring revenue and recurring brand exposure. A t-shirt subscription is a consistent source of recurring revenue. A t-shirt subscription can provide opportunities for recurring brand exposure. Add your label or brand to every design. Build customer loyalty and commitment by consistently delivering quality t-shirts and designs. 5. T-shirt subscriptions foster a sense of community which can result in: Increased loyalty Higher engagement Higher lifetime value (LTV) and retention rates 6. T-shirt subscriptions are more affordable and accessible than many other subscriptions. A t-shirt subscription can be a successful, standalone subscription. It can also be a complement to your existing subscription box. Mine started as a complement to my Monogram Box when my subscribers asked for more t-shirts! I've seen great success with my own t-shirt subscriptions and have helped SO MANY members of Launch Your Box build thriving t-shirt subscriptions. I'm well-known for my extensive knowledge of all things t-shirt. So much so that my students and peers have been asking for a standalone t-shirt subscription course for quite a while. My team and I have spent the last several months working on this course.

In this powerful and eye-opening episode of Keep it Humane: The Podcast, Daniel Ettinger, Ashley Bishop and Ashlee Bishop sit down with Dr. A. Michelle Gonzalez—veterinarian, forensic expert, and host of The Animal Welfare Junction. Dr. Gonzalez has been leading a groundbreaking investigative series on Steffen Baldwin, a self-proclaimed “trainer” whose history of animal cruelty and misconduct has sent shockwaves through the animal welfare community.Together, we unpack the complex layers of this case:• how Baldwin built influence in the dog-training world,• the red flags that were ignored or minimized,• the survivors—both canine and human—impacted by his actions,• and the systemic gaps that allow abusers to hide in plain sight.Dr. Gonzalez shares what she's learned through extensive research, interviews, and forensic review for her podcast, offering a candid look at how misinformation, inadequate regulation, and industry silencing contribute to ongoing harm.Whether you work in animal control, sheltering, veterinary medicine, law enforcement, or advocacy, this episode provides essential insight into how we can better protect animals, empower victims, and build a safer, more accountable animal welfare landscape. This is an episode you won't want to miss—honest, unsettling, educational, and ultimately a call to action for all who believe animals deserve better.

We live in a time of automation and robotics; the machines run the factories, and AI will soon take all the jobs. Yet, even today, there are certain niche jobs where only an animal will do. Comedian and biologist Simon Watt meets some of them and the people who train them, study them, and love them. He starts with a business of ferrets (yes, that is their collective noun) at the National Ferret School in Derbyshire, who have swapped rabbit holes and trouser legs for drain-clearing, rewiring, and laying fibre optic cables. Ferret Trainer James McKay demonstrates why they are perfect for the job, as he casually folds one trainee into a tight pretzel.Simon visits the HQ of Medical Detection Dogs, a training facility in Milton Keynes where dogs are being trained to sniff the tell-tale signs of a host of diseases. You may have heard of their 'cancer dogs', but it goes much further - epilepsy, malaria, Parkinson's, even Covid-19. Dr Claire Guest explains.Although we have no real idea exactly how dogs do what they do, AI may be on the cusp of solving this puzzle for us. Simon speaks to Dr Andreas Mershin from start-up Realnose, which is developing “electronic noses".Finally, Simon meets some real heroes - HeroRats, to be precise. Not the same species that haunts our sewers, these are African Giant Pouched Rats, and their job as landmine detection specialists is saving lives across Thailand, Mozambique, Cambodia and Zimbabwe. Dr Cynthia Fast from UCLA trains them for the job.Presenter: Simon Watt Producer: Emily Knight

In this thought-provoking episode, Jasmin and Mariann sit down with Seth Green from Stanford’s Humane and Sustainable Food Lab and Benny Smith from Allied Scholars for Animal Protection to tackle the million-dollar question: how do we actually get people to stop eating animals? The conversation dives into Seth’s fascinating meta-analysis of intervention studies and sparks a passionate debate about what really…
Some animals have a very different relationship to aging than we do: They don't get cancer, they never go through menopause, and they live absurdly long lives. For instance, one bat species can live for more than 40 years, which may not sound like very long but that's about nine times longer than expected based on its size. For comparison, if we aged on that scale, we'd live for hundreds of years. These bats aren't the only animal super-agers—there's a whole menagerie of them.So what's their secret? And can we learn anything from them that might help us live longer, healthier lives? Host Flora Lichtman talks with longevity researchers Vera Gorbunova and Juan Manuel Vazquez about what animals are teaching us.Guests:Dr. Vera Gorbunova is a biologist and professor at the University of Rochester, and a co-director of the Rochester Aging Research Center.Dr. Juan Manuel Vazquez is a biologist and assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University studying the evolution of aging.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
