DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE THIS IS??? I got to spend 1.5 hours TALKING WITH A MAN ABOUT GRIEF!!! Filmmaker Phil Wall takes us deep inside his own life and shares his mom, Carol's diagnosis of breast cancer in 1995 when he was barely a teen-ager. The cancer's reoccurrence in 2004. And the highs and lows of the family's excitement when his mom's book was picked up by an agent, a publishing company and received glowing first reviews. Carol's book Mister Owita's Guide to Gardening was published in March of 2014. She died 9 months later. Before she passed Carol told her family to "take care of our book." Phil's beautiful and ground-breaking film The Book Keepers tells the story of just that. It had it's World Premiere at the Austin Film Festival. I've seen it twice so far. Two gifts from Nate Meyer's mom to all of us are: 1. Forcing her middle son to start taking Cello lessons at the age of 7 and making sure he stuck with them every Thursday afternoon through high school. Yes, high school. 2. Insisting that he drop out of high school sports, knowing they would take away much too much valuable time from her love - not his - perfecting the art of playing the Cello. It wasn't until college that Matt learned to improvise and fell in love with the gift he gives to the world. The Cello. This is a fascinating conversation with a classically trained musician, surrounded by three of his buddies who can't read a musical note.
