In this episode, Brian Winningham shares a poem that he wrote about life in the construction industry titled Temporary Fence Panels. In the poem, Brian captures perfectly what it's like to work on a construction project site. Before you know it, the day is gone, and you haven't even started your own personal work. Staying until late in the night, and then you realize a problem on the job site that you must solve before you can go home! The OG Lean Builder, Buddy Brumley, shares his own experience of working in the construction industry for a long time without succumbing to heart attacks, alcoholism, substance abuse, or divorce. This is seen as an anomaly, with the other speakers referring to him as a "unicorn." Buddy's story highlights the importance of self-care in a high-stress industry like construction, where many individuals may struggle with mental health issues and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Buddy discusses the challenges of finding time for self-care, particularly when work consumes a significant amount of time and energy. He admits to not having any hobbies and using his time off to recharge for the next week. However, he recognizes the need to hold himself accountable and make time for self-care, even if it means learning new ways of managing his schedule. The speakers also acknowledge the role of support from others in encouraging and reminding individuals to prioritize self-care. Overall, the episode emphasizes the significance of self-care in reducing stress levels and improving overall well-being. It highlights the challenges faced in prioritizing self-care in a demanding industry like construction, but also emphasizes the benefits that can be gained from making self-care a priority. ATTENTION: Some explicit content, at 14mins with his story and how he passed away. I don't normally talk about his story, for whatever reason, but mental health, especially in the chronic community is so important! My brother passed away of suicide back in 2008, he was 19. I'm so grateful that I was able to spend 18 years of my own life with him, growing up with a brother even though today it is quite sad. I do go over what it's like experiencing suicide, living with him and without him, so many emotions and feelings that I have gone through after experiencing suicide. I also do talk about very specifically how he passed away so if you are having a great day, maybe listen to this podcast on another day. I appreciate everyone's support and thank you so much for listening to my story and following this podcast. As much as the announcement of the Matric results are almost always met with much jubilation it is important to note that this time period may not be a good time for some. The matric class of 2020 are expected to get their results on the 22nd of February. The week of the 14th of February to the 20th of February also marks: Teen and Suicide Prevention Week. Stacey and J Sbu will be featuring some insights for parents and students for the month of February focusing on the class of 2020. The topics and conversations will be tailored to a different topic and have the opinion of an expert. This week the focus is on mental wellness. Suicide is a significant and tragic national health issue that affects millions of Americans each year. In 2018, 48,344 people died by suicide in the United States, making it the nation's 10th leading cause of death and equating to about one suicide death every 11.1 minutes (CDC, 2020; CDC, 2017). Additional research estimates that 300-400 physicians commit suicide per year. In recognition of Suicide Prevention Week, we have decided to release an episode on this sensitive topic. Suicide Prevention Week is a call to action in the hopes to affect the lives of our loved ones, our classmates, our patients, and our communities. Throughout this week, we hope to learn how to #BeThere for one another by increasing awareness of the signs of suicide, by equipping you with the skills to talk about it, and by spotlighting some higher-risk populations. Please check out the MIND Instagram to learn more about the events happening this week (@MIND_AT_TCOM). #024 - In honor Suicide Prevention Week, I'm devoting today's podcast episode to older adults and suicide. More specifically, what puts older adults at risk of suicide and how you can help. You may be surprised to hear that older White men over 85 are at the greatest risk and have the highest rates of suicide - more than any other age group. But, here’s the thing, older adults are too often left out of conversations when it comes to simple things like assessing for depression, assessing for suicide, and then connecting older adults to the appropriate mental health care. As a result, most older adults with mental health concerns are treated in primary care settings, rather than mental health settings. Here's where you come in. In today's episode, I share facts about older adults and suicide, including what increases risk for suicide in older adults, and several strategies for helping older adults at risk for suicideHere's a peak inside the episode:[02:03] Older White men over 85 have the highest rates of suicide, more than any other age group. Where this highest risk group is most likely to get mental health care will surprise you.[04:59] Learn the mindset shift we need to make on the value we place on older lives and the toll this takes on mental health. [05:10] To illustrate the experience of being an older adult who balks against the notion of being disposable based on age, I share an article written by 90 year old, Varda Yoran. [14:28] Learn the most prominent risk factors related to older adults and suicide. [18:58] I share about an interpersonal process group I led for 7 years for older men at increased risk for suicide. [22:36] There are many quick and simple strategies for reducing risk of suicide in older adults. Simply listening to this episode and choosing one strategy will go a long way. Click here to listen!Check out the show notes here!A quick but important disclaimer:I will be talking about suicide and suicide prevention. Suicide is a very sensitive topic and so if this topic is triggering or is very intense for you, please consider whether or not it's healthy for you to listen to this particular podcast on this particular day. In honor of Suicide Prevention Week, we are bringing you multiple stories of hope, resilience, and healing. Lois Chauncey lost her husband to suicide in May, and like many other suicide loss survivors, she feared she would also lose her job due to her complicated grief. Paul Sale, her Supervisor, provided a textbook-like example of how a company should appropriately respond to a suicide loss survivor in the workplace. From the humbling way in which Paul responded to the initial news of suicide, to the steps Lois and Paul took to inform others in the workplace, the empathy, compassion, and kindness one team took to welcome back in a suicide loss survivor is a hopeful study in how a workplace can help heal a co-worker's grief, and win a valued employee's respect and loyalty.
As we return to the show after a refreshing summer break, I have a special guest and a new book to share with you about a tough topic that’s close to my heart. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this week is Suicide Prevention Week. It’s super appropriate that we discuss what life is like for the survivors left behind after the suicide of a loved one. This is something that’s been prevalent in my family, and some of my earliest memories are of the aftermath of a loved one’s suicide. Let’s dive into this topic together! Sarah Neustadter, Ph.D., is the author of Love You Like the Sky: Surviving the Suicide of a Beloved. The book is heart-wrenching and useful, written from the perspective of a suicide survivor and psychologist. The healing process is an unfolding of growing and learning, but the important thing to know is that there IS help. Sarah wrote this book because all the books she found didn’t touch the raw emotions she felt at the death of her beloved several years ago. She was confronted with hard questions, so the book is designed as a map for navigating complicated grief and understanding grief as a way toward deeper transformation from despair to beauty. You can read the full show notes at www.alexandrajamieson.com/219
Ken Cervera's openness, his honesty and his path to wellness have all been informed by an immensely isolating period in his late twenties when he attempted to end his life. Ken drove his motorcycle through a Los Angeles intersection straight into an oncoming vehicle. Miraculously, both drivers escaped harm. It is Suicide Prevention Week and we believe suicide attempt survivors can be extremely helpful in understanding the suicide epidemic, the mindset of suicidal ideation, and why relationship-centered and evidence-based treatment is essential to recovery. Ken Cervera is the host of Own Your Truth Podcast, a personal coach, and the Director of Wellness for Mind Health Institute, Pasadena.
:19 - Today starts Suicide Prevention Week. Many Americans have sadly encountered a family member, friend, coworker, or acquaintance who have either suffered from depression or suicidal thoughts, and some have even attempted and completed the act. Ray and Tony began Monday’s show recapping the largely undisciplined performance by the Browns, who caused 18 penalties. 12:03 - After 45 days, the Kenmore Leg westbound on I-76 is open, and now the eastbound lanes will close till the end of October. ODOT’s Justin Chesnic explains. 15:13 - And finally, our veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs answered questions on your pets. Be sure to follow us on our various social media platforms. Episode 8 | Suicide Prevention Week Ahead of Suicide Prevention Week (8th - 14th of Septmber) Lisa sat down with Shirley Windsor. Shirley Windsor is the Organisational Lead for Public Mental Health at NHS Health Scotland. Working together with key national and local agencies, she supports the implementation of mental health improvement and suicide prevention activities, flowing from the national Mental Health Strategy and Suicide Prevention Action Plan. HS Health Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) were jointly commissioned to develop a range of animations as part of the Scottish Government’s ‘Suicide Prevention Action Plan’. Links to these can be found below. Ask, Tell - Save A Life: Every Life Matters https://vimeo.com/338176393 Ask, Tell - Have a Healthy Conversation https://vimeo.com/338176393 Ask, Tell - Have a Healthy Conversation https://vimeo.com/338176495 George Dodds, Director of Health Equity at NHS Health Scotland, and member of the National Suicide Prevention Leadership group, said: “On average two people die by suicide every day in Scotland. That is tragic and preventable. We also know that one in three people who take their own life have had no contact with any specialist services before they die. We need to change that dramatically. “That’s why NHS Health Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland worked together to develop these resources, to help the Scottish workforce improve mental health and prevent suicide. The online animations created aim to raise awareness of the issues that affect people and that can lead those in distress to sometimes think about taking their own life. They’re also designed to increase the confidence of healthcare staff to respond compassionately and effectively to support anyone in that situation. “We hope the animations will help staff from other sectors have the confidence to hold compassionate conversations with those they meet, so that they can get help to those most vulnerable at the time it’s needed.”

September 10 kicks off suicide prevention week, leading into suicide prevention month for September. This week, I tell you the story of my Uncle Rick, how he impacted my life, and the reason I speak out about mental illness and suicide. Kind of a somber episode this week, fair warning. Just unloaded my feelings and this is what came of it...didn't really write any of this, it all just came from the heart. Edited out some of the incredibly awkward silences and here is this week's Mental Health Monday. In memory of my Uncle, Rick.
This week is a special episode for a few reasons! Primarily, I get to chat with my best friend and partner, Katy Hamm. Also, it's a week where we get to talk about one of my favorite topics - mental health. Well, it's one of OUR favorite topics because Katy and I talk about mental health almost every single day - so it was nice to record a chat with them this week. Katy is the Student Activities Coordinator at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass - where feelings and mental health are consistent topics of conversation. Katy does a lot of work to destigmatize mental health in the workplace, so we hope you enjoy this week's episode! CONTENT WARNING: We dive into the topics of depression, anxiety, traumas, PTSD, and suicidality within this episode, which might be triggering for some listeners. EPISODE NOTES: (NOTE: Visit CraigBidiman.com/edupunxpod for a complete listing of links.) - Last week was Suicide Prevention Week, and in honor of that, I wrote a blog post about managing mental health in the workplace for my friends in Presence. You should definitely look at this conversation as an extension of this post. - Back before we started dating, Katy and I wrote a fun collaborative blog post about the healing power of music and how it got both of us into the field. - Katy works at Lesley University, which is where expressive arts therapy was created! Lots of feelings at Lesley. - Katy’s wrote a powerful post about loss. - Make sure to know your rights if you suffer with mental illness - the ADA can be your friend. - I love that Katy and I are both big fans of the book, The Virgin Suicides - kind of ironic for this week's topic, but such a powerful story. - 30 Rock is a very important and influential TV show for Katy - who loves a lot of TV. - It's sort of telling that Katy's favorite movie is Idiocracy - such a wonderful allegory of today's political climate. - If you know Katy, you know their favorite band to see live is Every Time I Die. And lately they've been all about the newer pop punk band, Waterparks! MUSIC NOTES: - This week I featured tunes from the band, RANGES, who release its new album, "The Ascensionist" THIS FRIDAY through A Thousand Arms Music (US) and dunk!records (EU). Pick up the vinyl, CD, or a digital copy through AThousandarms.com or rangesmusic.com! - You get to hear the title track, which has a shiny new video that you can watch! - Also featured on the episode are the songs, "The Greater Light," as well as "In the Arms of Kings and Gods," and you can hear more from the new album at their bandcamp page: https://ranges.bandcamp.com/. ADVERTISING NOTES: - This week I hyped up A Thousand Arms, which is a brilliant design and merch company that has done amazing things for almost every post rock instrumental band that exists! - You can order unique merch - including screen-printed posters, shirts, hoodies, slipmats, hats, and koozies - by visiting http://www.athousandarms.com/printing today! - A Thousand Arms guarantee a 2-week turnaround and delivery from the date payment is received.
