Mailbag: Trauma & Type, Subtypes, Wings, and How We Grieve

We're going back into the vault for one of our most popular mailbag episodes from Season 3 — and the questions are just as good as we remembered. In this episode, Ian and co-host Anthony Skinner answer listener questions on some of the Enneagram's most nuanced and personal territory: Can trauma actually change your type? What is the "sunny Four," and why do subtypes matter so much for Fours and Sixes? How do Threes and Fours process grief differently — and what does healthy grieving even look like through an Enneagram lens? What does it mean to have a heavy wing, and can you access both wings for growth? And for the Ones in the room — what do you actually do with all that repressed anger? Whether you're new to Typology or you've been with us for years, this one is worth your time. Have a question of your own? Send it to wendy@ianmorgancron.com and you might hear it answered on our next mailbag episode.

We got Angel on to share his story of bikes, running one of the most successful bike shops in GA, shutting it down after a long good run, taking time off and traveling the country, and then coming back in a different way to the GA bike scene. Great to be able to share a positive story of a bike shop that is actually coming back into the GA market rather than another one shutting down. We discuss how the look and feel of a bike shop is changing to stay alive and what he is doing to try to set himself up for success. About Sixes Pit GarageSixes Pit Garage was built on a simple idea: bikes bring people together. What started years ago as a community bike shop has evolved into a more personal, rider-focused experience centered around quality service, honest communication, and a genuine passion for cycling. Today, Sixes Pit Garage operates from the home front, allowing us to provide one-on-one attention, flexible scheduling, pickup and drop-off options, and a level of care that can be difficult to find in larger retail environments. This is a new chapter for Sixes Pit Garage, but the mission remains the same:Build community. This is the deep dive on Enneagram Type Six. And the first thing I want to say is that Sixes are not just anxious people. That framing does such a disservice to this type that I hear from Sixes regularly saying they feel completely misrepresented by it. We are going into what is actually happening underneath, and why this type is so much more layered than most resources make it look.In this episode:Why anxiety is the symptom and not the sourceThe clearest way to tell Six apart from Two, Nine, and OneThe difference between phobic and counterphobic Sixes, and why a Six can move between the twoThe defense mechanism that turns intuition into projection, and how to tell the differenceWho this is for: Anyone who suspects they might be a Six, anyone who loves a Six and wants to understand them more deeply, and any Six who is ready to be seen as more than just an anxious person. If you are still in the process of figuring out your type, the Self-Typing Toolkit is built for you. In this episode of The Working Enneagram, we're talking all about the communication style of the Enneagram Type 6. Kelsey is joined by Emma and Marshall, two Type 6s who bring such thoughtful, honest, and hilarious insight into what it's like to communicate through a lens of preparedness, loyalty, curiosity, and the occasional “backup plan for the backup plan.” We talk about why Sixes often crave context, how they process uncertainty, what “the committee” means, why the why matters so much, and how Type 6s create safe spaces for the people around them. In this conversation, you'll also learn:Why Type 6s often give so much contextFor Sixes, context isn't usually “extra.” It often feels necessary for clarity, trust, and making sure nothing important gets missedWhy Sixes ask so many questionsQuestions aren't always pushback. Sometimes they're a Six's way of seeking security, understanding, and a little more solid ground. What “ping-ponging” sounds like in real lifeEmma explains the mental back-and-forth that can happen when a Six is trying to find certainty in a situation that may not offer it.Why the “why” matters so muchSixes don't just want to know what's happening. They want to understand why it's happening, how decisions were made, and what it means moving forward. How Type 6s can grow in communicationWe talk about the courage it takes to say, “I don't know,” to trust yourself, and to communicate without needing every possible contingency plan in place first. If you are a Type 6, work with a Type 6, love a Type 6, or have ever overthought a text message for longer than you'd like to admit, this conversation is for you. HT2567 - Moment Is Not Quite the Right Word One of the things I particularly like about the Seeing In SIXES concept for photography is its ability to expand or stretch time. Instead of the instantaneous photograph, with six images we have the capability to express a moment. I've never been comfortable with that term. Describing the unit of time for a Seeing in SIXES project is difficult. A moment is too short; an hour is too long. I think this is so because it's not a measure of clock time but rather of conscious attention. Somehow, "unit of consciousness" seems a bit clumsy. Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 332 of Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast. In this episode, your tour guide, David Garrett Jr., will pause to celebrate St. Patrick's Day for episode 7. Since the Leprechaun series is complete, I decided on this double feature. First, I went to the theater to see The Bride! (2026) which features an Irish born actress as the lead, Jessie Buckley. Then I'm pairing it with a Scouring through the Sixes watch of The Fantasist (1986). Both explore similar themes of toxic masculinity and how women deal. I also got to see these films for Mini-Reviews: Dolly (2025), Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby (1976), Where Silence Lies (2025), Capture (2026) and covering the commentary track for Friday the 13th (1980). In this episode, Suzanne Stabile, internationally recognized Enneagram expert and mom of four adult children, shares her personal story and how the Enneagram has shaped her approach to parenting. She explains that the Enneagram isn't about changing who we are, but about understanding how we see the world and choosing how to act with intention. She reminds us that there's no one right way to parent; motherhood requires recognizing differences, extending grace, and embracing our own authentic path.Suzanne dives into the practical applications of the Enneagram in family life, showing how it can transform relationships with your children, your spouse, and other moms. She explains the energy and tendencies of different Enneagram types—from aggressive and dominant types to dependent and withdrawing types—and how understanding these patterns can bring unity instead of conflict. Parenting is never easy, and mistakes are inevitable, but Suzanne emphasizes that grace covers our shortcomings. By using the Enneagram as a tool, we can parent with more awareness, respond with empathy, and honor our own authentic selves while guiding our children with love. Here is some of what we cover:  Enneagram Types as Animals: Ones are Worker Bees, Twos are Kangaroos, Threes are Eagles, Fours are Butterflies, Fives are Owls, Sixes are Bunny Rabbits, Sevens are Monkeys, Eights are Lions, and Nines are Turtles. Grace covers the places we fall short Set appropriate priorities: You can't do it all. Be mindful in child-centered families: When the focus is entirely on the children, much can get overlooked, and it often reflects a broader cultural expectation. What happens when the worst thing you've been afraid of actually happens—and you're still standing? In this episode of Typology, I sit down with songwriter Brad Warren—an Enneagram Six, a man in long-term recovery, a husband, a father, and someone who has walked straight through unimaginable grief and come out the other side with humility, humor, and hard-won wisdom. Brad is the kind of person who tells the truth without posturing, who can laugh at himself without diminishing himself, and who understands—deeply—that fear doesn't disappear just because you name it. But naming it does change the game. We talk about the Enneagram Six's instinct to scan the horizon for danger, to rehearse conversations that never happen, and to catastrophize not because they're weak—but because they care. A lot. Brad shares how losing a child forced him to face his worst fears head-on, and how recovery, faith, and accountability helped him learn the difference between imagined catastrophe and lived reality. There's a kind of quiet courage in the way he describes trusting God—not a God who's looking to smite him, but one who's patiently inviting him to rest. Along the way, we explore humor as both a survival strategy and a spiritual practice, the surprising connection between humility and laughter, and how Sixes learn to move from fear-driven vigilance to faith-filled presence. We also touch on marriage, loyalty, religious deconstruction with gratitude instead of bitterness, and the life-saving power of people who are willing to tell you the truth when your mind is lying to you. This episode is funny, tender, honest, and deeply human. It's about fear—but it's even more about trust. And what it looks like, day by day, to choose it anyway.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Brad Warren Brad Warren is a Nashville-based songwriter and artist best known as one half of the hitmaking Warren Brothers. He has co-written major country hits recorded by Tim McGraw, Toby Keith , Keith Urban, Faith Hill , Martina McBride, Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean and more. Brad is also the host of the Good Grief Good God podcast. He and his wife Michelle lost their oldest son Sage in 2020 and the podcast is in honor of him. In this episode, Sissy and David sit down with two beloved Enneagram Sixes: longtime Daystar founder and leader Melissa Trevathan and Daystar counselor Allye Gray. They explore how differently Sixes can look—phobic and counterphobic—and how both expressions are driven by the same core issues of fear, loyalty, and a deep desire for safety and goodness. Allye shares candidly about being a “phobic” Six: an inner world full of what-ifs and how her anxiety can be palpable in parenting. She talks about learning to trust her own instincts, tolerate discomfort, and surround herself with people who stretch her beyond worry into courage and play. Melissa reflects on decades as a “counterphobic” Six, including childhood stories of pushing through fear, starting Daystar when counseling wasn't common, and discovering that fear doesn't have to control her life or leadership. Together they offer thoughtful encouragement for parents who are Sixes—and those raising Six kids—naming how anxiety can be misunderstood, how important it is to name dread and seek truth, and how community, Scripture, and play can help Sixes move from living out of fear to parenting more from love, trust, and joy. . . . . . .  Sign up to receive the bi-monthly newsletter to keep up to date with where David and Sissy are speaking, where they are taco'ing, PLUS conversation starters for you and your family to share! HT2309 - A Nagging Sense of Guilt It's been over a year since my last publication of a new issue of Kokoro. I feel a sense of guilt about this. In that same time, I've release 400 Here's a Thought, 60 podcasts, 60 episodes of Finding the Picture, 5 issues of LensWork, and that doesn't count episodes of Looking at Images, Seeing in SIXES commentaries, or Trilogies commentaries. So why this nagging sense of guilt? The pressure to produce takes many forms. Show your appreciation for our free weekly Podcast and our free daily Here's a Thought… with a donation Thanks!

LW1456 - Too Much of a Good Idea A frequent characteristic we see in submissions to LensWork is when a photographer develops an interesting idea but then carries that idea too far with not enough image variations. The single image, a trilogy, perhaps even a Seeing in SIXES might be sufficient, but the photographer has explored the idea for 60 or 80 images and then neglected the all-important editing and selection process. HT2263 - A Deadline, 15-Minutes from Now Recognizing the moment is a skill that all of us are in the process of developing — with greater and greater facility as our endeavors in photography deepen. Learning to see in trilogies and SIXES quickly is a practice that pays unexpected dividends. Rather than engage a project that requires time an dedication, why not experiment with a project that is completed quickly, say 15 minutes? Sounds unreasonable? What about 30 minutes, half a day, a weekend? Show your appreciation for our free weekly Podcast and our free daily Here's a Thought… with a donation Thanks!
