Portland MC Mat Randol believes in the challenges of hip hop: to grow and evolve, to live at the edge of his comfort zone, to tell the truth, and to find the joy. On the mic he's dexterous, dynamic, and confessional...but he also wouldn't say no to a few choice sips in the studio. His 2026 is scheduled to be a non-stop banger of releases, collaborations, and live music. Plus, he's a great hang, as you'll hear in this episode. He stopped by to discuss the timely feedback that altered the direction of his musical approach, building the experiences that add up to an artist, and keeping his core themes fresh. In this conversation, David Bryan speaks with Steve & Rick Simone-Friedland about their recent play, 'Kind Stranger,' which is adapted from Tennessee Williams' memoir. They discuss their creative process, the challenges of performing a one-person show, and the importance of queer narratives in theater. The duo reflects on their personal and professional relationship, the audience's reception of their work, and their plans for future productions.Kind Stranger depicts the poignant journey of Tennessee Williams as the legendary playwright recounts his life, art, and love affairs. Witness his wit and unflinching honesty as he writes his last chapter, revealing how his plays were his life and his life was his plays. Director Johanna Gustin joins Mike Smith (with BSDFF's Nick Davis) to talk about her world-premiere short I Think About Birds—a sharply funny, uneasy journey through the algorithmic rabbit hole of online dating coaches, contrasted with surprisingly romantic bird behavior and the real emotional risks of intimacy. The conversation touches on “desktop documentary” filmmaking, pulling hours of material from YouTube, and how online spaces can quietly shape the way we think about relationships.I Think About Birds screens Thu, Feb 19 at 6:00 PM at the ZACC and Sat, Feb 21 at 12:30 PM at the Wilma, and is available to stream Feb 22–26, 2026.
From the 23rd annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Missoula, we sit down with director Caron Creighton and former Wood Street resident John Janosko to talk about Wood Street—a 2026, 100-minute documentary following two unhoused men turned organizers, John and LaMonté, as they build community power in West Oakland in the face of displacement, addiction, and a failing social system. We talk about how the Wood Street Commons formed, what mutual aid and organizing looked like day-to-day, and why Caron chose to center unhoused voices as the experts of their own experience.World Premiere screening: MCT — Wed, Feb 18 @ 5:00 PM (see full schedule at bigskyfilmfest.org).--> Get involved: woodstreetcommons.orgTrail 103.3 is proud to once again be a media partner of the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival—a week of powerful, story-driven cinema and community conversation right here in Missoula. I have a great new chat to start your week off right! Benjamin Deutscher and Lauren Taggart jumped onto Zoom to record this podcast just one month after their film “The Storm” had its World Premiere at Sherman Oaks Film Festival! I could go on and on and on about how amazing The Storm is, but instead I will just share this. This animated film took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Film - Animation and the Audience Award for Best Featurette. But we do't stop there. Individually The Storm also won Richard Larimore the Grand Jury Award for Best Sound Design and Sylvain Kauffman the Grand Jury Award for Best Score. In other words, this 60 minute animated film is amazing in every way; visually, sonically, and narratively. You cannot watch it yet, but when it becomes available we will do our best to give you a link here. In the meantime, I should also mention that Ben and Lauren were delightful attendees at Sherman Oaks Film Festival. I enjoyed every opportunity to talk with either of them at the festival. WORLD PREMIERE! Zombies! Shakespeare! 80s inspired music! ROMERO & JULIET is a new zombie rock musical. When Romero, (a regional guardsman and distant relative of the filmmaker), meets zombie Juliet at a music festival called Deadstock on Friday the 13th in September 1985, what could possibly go wrong? This world premiere fuses Shakespeare's timeless tale of star-crossed lovers with the zombie lore of Pittsburgh's own George Romero, drawing stylistic inspiration from cult favorites such as LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. It has an original score inspired by 1980s pop legends including Madonna, Bon Jovi, George Michael, Boy George, and Jim Steinman. ROMERO & JULIET is written by Broadway vets Scott Logsdon and Aaron Gandy. It celebrates and builds on George Romero's enduring Pittsburgh cultural legacy and serves as a reminder that… love bites!Feb 13th & 14th, 2026Greer Cabaret Theater655 Penn AvePittsburgh PA 15222

The New Yorker magazine called Joyce DiDonato “perhaps the most potent female singer of her generation.” Joyce has towered at the top of the industry as a performer, a producer, and a fierce advocate for the arts. With a repertoire spanning over four centuries, a varied and highly acclaimed discography, and industry-leading projects, her artistry has defined what it is to be a singer in the 21st century.Joyce enjoys a musical partnership with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra and, of course, the Metropolitan Opera. Joyce's distinctively varied 2025-26 season commenced with season-opening concerts for the Minnesota Orchestra and Montreal's Orchestre Métropolitain, as well as the re-opening Powell Hall with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in a Kevin Puts's World Premiere, House of Tomorrow. She only recently made her Lincoln Center Theater stage debut as The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and is about to star in the Met's production of Innocence by Kaija Saariaho.Concert appearances include Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with Nézet-Séguin and the Berlin Philharmoniker. Joyce also joins the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for her second European tour with Yannick and this orchestra following a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 at Carnegie Hall. She is also, quite plainly, a genuine delight.

What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Michael D. Cohen held his WORLD PREMIERE of his short comedy film “Roughing It” at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June, 2025 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Writing, Comedy. It's the week of Gratitude and one thing I'm certainly thankful for is all of you curious listeners and our amazing guests. Speaking of amazing guests: Michael D. Cohen has enjoyed a wonderful career as a TV actor, but I got to meet him at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June, 2025 when we held the World Premiere of a short comedy film that Michael wrote and directed called “Roughing It.” As a fan of the film, I was particularly pleased to see our jury give Michael the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Writing, Comedy. The screening was standing room only and I am proud to say that you have another chance to see it at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival on Sunday, December 7 at 6:15 PM! That's one week after this podcast releases... and we didn't plan that out. Kismet!
