The vision behind the Disability Perspectives Podcast is to normalize the disability conversation, remove the stigma surrounding disabilities, and cultivate an atmosphere that values and validates the experiences and perspectives of those who live with diagnosed or undiagnosed disabilities as well as those who have otherwise been impacted by a disability. This includes caretakers, case managers, social workers, disability experts, etc. The aim of the podcast is to encourage people to share their experiences with disabilities in order to educate and raise awareness for disabilities.

    John Livermore is a junior at Virginia Tech. He enjoys playing rugby, working on his truck, and taking part in in Cru campus ministry. John was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Depression this past year. In this episode, we sit down with John and he shares with us a little of his journey, perspective, and experience with these diagnoses and how he has coped with them. He discusses the role his doctor has played as well as the prominent role of his faith in his disability journey. John had this to say about his experience on the Disability Perspectives Podcast: I had a fantastic experience working with Utah and indirectly with the rest of the disability perspectives podcast team! I loved being able to share a little bit of my story with the world. Hopefully some listeners will be able to relate To my story, and realize they aren't alone in their struggles. I've felt those struggles for years, but never did anything about it. I hope the listeners will feel encouraged to seek help when they need it.     TW: Suicide, Depression Dr. Carolyn Shivers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science and the Director of the Disabilities Studies Pathways Minor at Virginia Tech. Originally from Northeast Ohio, Dr. Shivers completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame where she studied Psychology, Vocal Performance and was in the honors program. She completed Graduate School at Vanderbilt University where she studied Psychology and Statistics. Dr. Shivers shares some insight into her research area where she looks at siblings of individuals with any disability. She also shares about her personal experience with disability. Dr Shivers had this to say about her experience on the Disability Perspectives Podcast: I had a blast sharing my stories with Utah. I really appreciated the focus on the academic side of disability, as well as my personal experiences. The whole process was so casual and respectful, and I hope people are able to continue expanding their worldview to include people with disabilities!     Nick Chase is a Freshman at Virginia Tech studying political science. He enjoys listening to music, shopping at local thrift stores, and playing video games with friends. During today's episode, Nick shares with us his experience with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare bone disorder resulting from a lack of collagen. He tells us about his perspective as someone with a disability and what that has looked like in his life.
