SAMUEL JAY KEYSER - "Play It Again, Sam: Repetition in the Arts" (Author) Ep. 244

Rick Flynn Presents, the worldwide podcast, rolls out the red carpet for an amazing author writing on an amazing topic in his brand-new book "Play It Again, Sam: Repetition in the Arts".Samuel Jay Keyser explores in detail the way repetition works in poetry, music, and painting. He argues, for example, that the same cognitive function underlies both how poets write rhyme in metrical verse and the way songwriters like Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (“Satin Doll”) and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (“My Funny Valentine”) construct their iconic melodies. Furthermore, the repetition found in these tunes can also be found in such classical compositions as Mozart's Rondo alla Turca and his German Dances, as well as in galant music in general.Artists have exploited repetition throughout the ages. The reason why is straightforward: the brain finds the detection of repetition innately pleasurable. Play It Again, Sam offers experimental evidence to support this claim.Samuel Jay Keyser was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 7, 1935. He grew up in Washington, DC and attended George Washington, Oxford and Yale University, where he received his PhD in linguistics in 1962. Keyser has taught at Brandeis University, University College, London, the University of Massachusetts and MIT where he joined the faculty in July of 1977 and from which he retired in 1998. He is currently Special Assistant to the Chancellor at MIT, a position he has held since his retirement. Contact him through his Facebook page "Samuel Jay Keyser." and buy the book wherever books are sold.

Get Keyser's Book here: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262552325/play-it-again-sam/   In his famous Norton Lectures (1976), Leonard Bernstein extolled repetition, saying that it gave poetry its musical qualities and that music theorists refused to take it seriously at their peril. In Play It Again, Sam, Keyser takes Bernstein seriously, exploring the way repetition works in the “sister arts” of music, poetry, and painting. He argues, for example, that rhyme in metrical verse is identical to the way songwriters like Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn (Satin Doll), Lorenz Hart (My Funny Valentine), and Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame) constructed their iconic melodies. Furthermore, the form of these tunes can be found in classical compositions, including those of Mozart.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. In this episode of the 2Tokens Podcast, Alex Bausch is joined by Pascal de Keyser, founder of Portio, and Jonny Fry, founder of Team Blockchain, to delve into the future of real estate through the lens of blockchain, tokenization, and co-living.With rising urban loneliness and the lack of accessible housing, Pascal introduces co-living as a community-centric, flexible alternative to traditional rentals. From entrepreneurs to seniors, co-living is gaining traction across Europe and beyond, offering a shared space model that blends private accommodation with communal amenities like lounges, co-working spaces, and gyms. What makes this unique is the exploration of how tokenization can transform renters into co-owners, giving them a stake in both the rental income and long-term value appreciation of the property they live in. Pascal explains Portio's rent-to-own model, which allows renters and external investors to acquire fractional ownership through low-cost tokens (starting at €40). These tokens are issued via a securitized vehicle in Luxembourg and are built on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing for high transparency, fractionalization, and potential liquidity through secondary markets. The conversation also covers:The regulatory landscape, including how Pascal's structure currently operates under Luxembourg's securitization law and plans to evolve under MiFID II or MiCAR as the platform scales. How co-living differs from traditional short-term rentals or Airbnb models.Plans to expand beyond Andorra to locations in Spain, Portugal, and Italy — especially cities like Valencia, Barcelona, and Lisbon. The role of stablecoins (like USDC) in enabling liquidity and future DeFi integrations such as staking, lending, and collateralization. The technological partnership with Blocksquare and the development of a marketplace for property token trading. This episode offers a fascinating look at a real-world asset use case already coming to life in Europe. Participants:Pascal de Keyser: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-de-keyser-121084219/Alex Bausch: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexbausch/Jonny Fry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonnyfry/Do you want to join one of the use cases? Two border collies named Hercules and Ned have quite the spacious office at West Virginia's busiest airport. The border collies and their handler make daily patrols along the mile-long airfield to ensure birds and other wildlife stay away from planes and keep passengers and crew safe. Hercules is also the chief ambassador, soaking in affection from passengers inside the terminal while calming some nervously waiting to board a flight at West Virginia International Yeager Airport. Chris Keyser, the dogs' handler and the airport's wildlife specialist, said preventing a bird from hitting a plane "can make a difference for someone's life." Collisions between wildlife and planes are common at airports nationwide. With that in mind, Yeager management in 2018 bought Hercules at the recommendation of a wildlife biologist. Hercules spent the first 18 months of his life training to herd geese and sheep around his birthplace at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Flyaway Geese, which teaches border collies to help businesses address nuisance wildlife problems. When Hercules stepped onto Charleston's airfield for the first time, "I held my breath," Flyaway Geese owner Rebecca Gibson said. "But boy, he took hold of the reins. It was his place." "He's done an amazing job and has just been a great dog for them. We're very proud of him." Now 8, Hercules has some help. Ned was 2 when he was welcomed into the fold last year from another kennel where he trained to herd goats and geese. Ned has shadowed Hercules, following commands from Keyser and learning safety issues such as not venturing onto the runway. About 19,000 strikes involving planes and wildlife occurred at U.S. airports in 2023, of which 95% involved birds, according to a Federal Aviation Administration database. From 1988 to 2023, wildlife collisions in the U.S. killed 76 people and destroyed 126 aircraft. At the Charleston airport, wildlife-plane incidents vary each year from a few to a couple of dozen. "Anytime a plane hits a bird, it has to be inspected, and it causes a delay in the flight," Keyser said. "And sometimes you don't make your connecting flights. So, that's how important it is to keep everything going smooth." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The ability to effectively manage and optimise data is key in an organisation today. But with the sheer volume and complexity of enterprise data, traditional methods are struggling to keep up with the change. This is where the agentic AI approach has swooped in to transform how organisations handle their most valuable resource. "The promise of AI and agentic AI is that we're now building very meaningful automation into the platform such that these teams of 10 are now able to basically actually capture all of the metadata about all of the data cataloged across their entire company," stated Corey Keyser, the head of artificial intelligence (AI) at Ataccama. In this episode of the Tech Transformed podcast, Shubhangi Dua, a B2B tech journalist and Podcast host at EM360Tech speaks with Keyser from Ataccama, about agentic AI, data quality, and data governance. They explore how intelligent automation is shaping enterprise data management, the role of AI in improving data quality, and the importance of trust in AI systems. Additionally, Keyser shares significant insights on Ataccama's unique approach to data governance, practical applications of their AI agent, and how they are keeping pace with the constantly changing AI regulations. While the speed and efficiency of AI are undeniable, the question of trust remains. Keyser addressed this directly: "The short answer is you can never fully trust these automations, right? “That's why it's really critical to always have data stewards that we will serve. We will always have data engineers that we will serve. We're just looking to improve their productivity. We always assume that there will be humans in the loop who are verifying the tasks orchestrated by AI agents."Ataccama's One AI Agent exemplifies the practical application of these principles. Keyser added that the AI agent can go and create data quality rules in bulk. “Go through the evaluation and testing of those quality rules in bulk, and then also assign the rules in bulk. Something that would take potentially weeks, can now actually kind of take hours depending on the person."TakeawaysAgentic AI is about dynamic planning and semi-autonomous task execution.Data governance involves cataloging and managing organisational data.Data quality assessment is crucial for ensuring high trust in data.AI can significantly speed up the creation of data quality rules.Human oversight is essential in AI-driven automation processes.Atacama's AI agent improves productivity for data management teams.Regulatory compliance is a growing concern for AI applications.User experience is key to successful AI integration in organisations. The relationship between data and AI is symbiotic and essential.Organisations must adapt to evolving AI regulations and standards.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Agentic AI and Data Governance02:41 Understanding Data Quality

Leonard Bernstein, in his famous Norton Lectures, extolled repetition, saying that it gave poetry its musical qualities and that music theorists' refusal to take it seriously did so at their peril. In Play It Again, Sam: Repetition in the Arts (MIT Press, 2025), Samuel Jay Keyser explores in detail the way repetition works in poetry, music, and painting. Furthermore, the repetition found in these tunes can also be found in such classical compositions as Mozart's Rondo alla Turca and his German Dances, as well as in galant music in general. The author also looks at repetition in paintings like Gustave Caillebotte's Rainy Day in Paris, Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, and Jackson Pollock's drip paintings. Finally, the photography of Lee Friedlander, Roni Horn, and Osmond Giglia—Giglia's Girls in the Windows is one of the highest-grossing photographs in history—are all shown to be built on repetition in the form of visual rhyme. The book ends with a cognitive conjecture on why repetition has been so prominent in the arts from the Homeric epics through Duke Ellington and beyond. Artists have exploited repetition throughout the ages. The reason why is straightforward: the brain finds the detection of repetition innately pleasurable. Play It Again, Sam offers experimental evidence to support this claim. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025  Jackson County's new metals plant hosts a progress tour…artist Kelson Thorne's murals brighten communities across the state…and West Virginia's own Jennifer Garner makes Variety's list of best TV performances of the 21st century…on today's daily304. #1 – From WOWK-TV – The future of metalmaking is slowly taking shape in Jackson County. TIMET, also known as Titanium Metals Corporation, is one step closer to building a plant where furnaces will be used to melt and process titanium. The plant hosted a tour earlier this month to show their progress since last year's groundbreaking. They are expected to start melting metal in the fall. Leaders said the facility will be the “first of its kind.” The plant will use renewable solar energy through a partnership with BHE Renewables. When operations are officially up and running, it will create two hundred jobs for the local economy. Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/jackson-county-wv/titanium-manufacturing-plant-hosts-progress-tour-congresswoman-miller-among-guests/   #2 – From WV LIVING – Artist and muralist Kelson Thorne finds inspiration in West Virginia and communities across the state. A Petersburg resident and WVU graduate, he strives to use his art to make his community a better place. One way he does that is through the Folk Around Appalachian Arts and Music Festival, something he has hosted twice via his art company, Art Junkie. He's already working on the third event, planned for this coming June. Thorne says the festival will be combined with a Petersburg Art Week, taking it from a one-day event to two days. The goal is to celebrate the community with an emphasis on Appalachian arts—which includes musical acts and those specializing in fine arts. Thorne's first mural was for a resident of Westover, across the river from Morgantown. He had never done a large-scale project but, to get the job, he says, he told the client he'd figure it out. Figure it out he did: Murals have since become a big focus for him. Many of his murals can be found spread throughout Petersburg, with others found in Keyser and Marlinton. Read more: https://wvliving.com/the-art-on-the-wall/   #3 – From WOWK-TV – Despite being born in Houston, Jennifer Garner has embraced West Virginia as her home ever since moving here when she was three years old, and one of her first major roles has recently garnered some recognition from Variety. Garner's performance as Sydney Bristow on “Alias” was number 54 on Variety's list of “The 100 Greatest TV Performances of the 21st Century.” The list only features scripted shows that started on or after Jan. 1, 2000. Since “Alias,” Garner has become Hollywood royalty with performances in films like “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Juno” and “13 Going on 30.” In 2018, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making her the fifth West Virginian to have one. Mike Lynch, a man who faced down the giant of  US Justice, out maneuvered the legal behemoths, took on the law and emerged victorious—only to be taken by the cold, capricious hand of Mother Nature. Imagine it: overcoming insurmountable odds, the weight of the world against you, and yet, you rise. Then, in a cruel twist, you're snuffed out by the very seas that should've carried you home on a joyous victory lap of vindication. And the loss of his number two, also acquitted by the US courts, on the very same day? That smacks of something truly out of whack—a malevolent force, a Keyser Söze-like figure, flexing its vindictive contempt. The unruly seas didn't just take six lives; they dragged HP's corporate secrets to the seabed, locked away in the depths, perhaps forever. Was it mere misfortune, or was there something more sinister at play? Watch this video, and together we'll explore what might just be the greatest unfinished story of the 21st century. The seas may have claimed their due, but the truth is still out there, waiting to surface. The country's first major climate policy, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, gave that transition a boost. It passed with the key vote of West Virginia's own Senator Democrat Joe Manchin.Keyser represents a national shift in American energy production. And in a town that was defined by coal for generations, change can be difficult.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
