Often organizations develop competencies as a way to measure… something. It’s not quite clear, but the goal is to recognize behaviors and habits that lead to business success. In this episode, we discuss different methods of using competencies with employees and for leaders.

Today’s podcast is a very, very brief overview of competencies, or outcomes-relevant measures of knowledge, skills, abilities, and traits and/or motives. The history of competencies goes back into intelligence testing in the industrial age, leading to “grading” approaches that may not be the best ways to establish the right “fit” for a role or position in an organization. Instead, being able to understand the right competencies for the culture and job functions could yield better hiring and performance results.
