Today, we're talking about TikTok refugees and Xiaohongshu. Due to the U.S. government's requirement for TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell its U.S. business by January 19, 2025, many American users have turned to Xiaohongshu. It's become very popular in the U.S., even topping the App Store's free app chart.Xiaohongshu is not only a social platform but also a powerful search engine. Before my trip to Japan, I found lots of travel info there. Even though the app is in Chinese, its lack of phone number restrictions has made it accessible to many Americans.Despite language barriers, translation tools help bridge communication, allowing for great cultural exchange. We are breaking this episode into 2 sections: If you are a native English speaker, how can you consider communicating with non-native English speakersIf English is an additional language, how can you continue to learn and grow the skillset of speaking English in a business settingWe'll provide tips for both sides on how to consider your audience, build your message, and prepare for your talk.
If communication is like painting, words are the primary colors. But to convey deeper meaning, we need a broader color palette, which Dana Carney says requires the mastery of nonverbal communication. We often focus on the words that we say when honing our communication, but according to Carney, there are many instances “where nonverbals start to be more meaningful than verbals.” A professor at Berkeley's Haas School of Business and the George Quist Chair in Business Ethics, Carney researches the nonverbal ways in which we communicate our biases, our preferences, our power, and our status. As Carney explores in her forthcoming book, The Five Nonverbal Rules of Power, there are several key areas of nonverbal behavior that we need to grasp in order to fully tap our potential as communicators. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, she and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to read the nonverbal communication of others — and how to gain control of the nonverbals we express to the world.Think Fast, Talk Smart is a podcast produced by Stanford Graduate School of Business. Whether an organization's teams are centered in a single city or dispersed across the world, cultural differences inevitably emerge. For leaders accustomed to knowing the answers and acting on their singular understanding of situations, it can be difficult to recognize these differences, much less level up the listening skills needed to address them for the good of their organization. For more than 10 years, Hawa Kombian has worked within and alongside companies in Canada, Ghana, and more, using her expertise in cross-cultural competency and communication to help her clients achieve operational sustainability and social vibrancy through customized results-driven cultures of connection. In this episode, Hawa and I delve into the compassionate approach she teaches to guide leaders and their teams in this important work. Explore the essential impact of cross-cultural competency on the future of work with:Why listening is the key to positive change in any organization; How to lead with cross-cultural compassion in today's remote workplaces; The need for humility in leaders championing long-term change; How we can redefine the legacy of leadership.Related Links:Hawa's Linktree - https://linktr.ee/hawakocoLearn more about Hawa - https://hawakombianconsulting.com/Hawa's LinkedIn article, Hey Founder...
