The news from Santa Cruz, from Craig & Amanda Cunningham, Christian overseas workers based in Bolivia since 2010.
Having just dropped Sam off at school for his first day back in 18 months (!), we decide to distract ourselves in the customary manner, by recording a podcast episode. In the first of an occasional series on the joys of travel in Bolivia, learn more about historic -- and, indeed, prehistoric -- Sucre!
We take some time out of dog-sitting to update you on things here in Bolivia, including exciting news about Sam's schooling and a new UK-bound Bolivian missionary. We also have an extended conversation about mental wellbeing and mental illness on the mission field. Canadian & US supporters: Join us on Monday 2nd of August at 8pm EST for our next live Zoom catchup!
We are back in Bolivia! Sam makes his long-awaited podcast return and we discuss the differences between shame-driven and guilt-driven cultures (and crucially, the difference between GMT and BST). Speaking of time-zones, make sure to join us live for some prayer and catch-up on the 7th of June, at 7:30pm/2:30pm (UK/EST). Please excuse some sound issues on this episode.
It's almost time to pack our bags here in Canada, but not before we recorded our latest episode. As well as some reflection on our two months' furlough, this time we consider differing cultural attitudes to hierarchies and status, which Amanda hijacks to riff on Craig's small-man syndrome pain. Thank you, everyone, for your continued prayerful support. Website: //cramandaham.blogspot.com
After a whirlwind few weeks, we find ourselves locked down in London, Ontario. But you can’t keep a good pod down, and so we continue our series on cultural differences by offering some reflections on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (or individualist vs collectivist cultures, as Amanda insists on calling it).
In our first episode of 2021, we begin a new series on differences between 'cold climate cultures' (e.g., North America, Europe) and 'hot climate cultures' (everywhere else!). We kick off by looking at contrasting attitudes to time, before closing with our prayer requests for the next few weeks. For more on this fascinating subject, check out Sarah Lanier's book 'Foreign to Familiar'. Website: //cramandaham.blogspot.com
In our final episode of the year, we reflect on the joys and sorrows of 2020 and look forward to the year ahead. Stay tuned till the end for a Christmas message from our sponsor(ed child). If you love this show, please leave us a review. Go to RateThisPodcast.com/loscunningham and follow the simple instructions.
Mark Hunt, AKA 'The Craig Cunningham of La Paz', joins us for a chat about international church ministry in Bolivia. In addition, we cover the big issues of our times, such as torture chairs and a leaders' thingy, while also launching the long-awaited 'who-gets-to-help-Sam-put-the-star-on-the-2021-Christmas-tree' competition. Audio gold this way lies.
Amanda waxes lyrical about her new laundry machine while Craig identifies the unnamed fruit of Genesis 3. You can't say the three-month wait hasn't been worth it! Blog: cramandaham.blogspot.com
As lockdown enters week 1,374, we huddle around the bunker microphone to discuss dinners of the Krafty variety, the latest on Sam's marital prospects, and why a visit to the supermarket is just like appearing on Top of the Pops in the '80s. All this, plus the latest on things for us here in Santa Cruz and an interview with our good friend Heidi Gladman of 'El Jordán' ministry (see link for more). http://kidsinbolivia.org/index.php
While much of the western world begins to take its first faltering steps out of lockdown, we remain very much in the thick of it here in Bolivia. Find out more in our first update for...a while!
Bolivia, like much of the world, is in lockdown, and we give an update on life and ministry for ourselves and others here in Santa Cruz at this time.
In the latest episode, we pay someone to tell us how foolish we are. Stay tuned for more on this, networking, a pastoral first and serving with joy.
We have returned from the beautiful country of Colombia, without a phone, but with oh, so much more: great coffee, a small army's worth of medication and, best of all, fond memories (ah!). Not least of our time hanging out with musician Santiago Benavides, who very kindly sat down for an interview for this very episode. Enjoy! On a hot summer's day in Santa Cruz (hence the fan in the background!), we open 2020 with some closing reflections on this missionary life, news on the next feather in our 'countries visited' cap, and tidings of comfort and joy for all those who have not yet packed away the decorations.
After a considerable delay, we find the spare thirty minutes in our end-of-year schedules to share a little more about our journey to the mission field, while also giving thanks for the year just past. A happy Christmas to all our listeners and the Lord's richest blessing for 2020!
"How did we get here?" is one of life's big questions, and in this episode, we provide the answer ('here' meaning Bolivia). We also reflect on the momentous events of the past couple of weeks, in particular the former president's resignation after rigging the elections/being overthrown by a military coup driven by Bible-thumpin' religious fanatics (delete as appropriate to your news outlet).
We are joined by special guests and good friends Bryan & Molly Canny as we reflect on continuing developments in the country.
A short update on the state of play here in Bolivia after the election and how it is affecting our day-to-day existence. Sorry about the shorter episode this week; hoping normal service will soon be resumed!
What happens when you stick a microphone in front of two exhausted Christian overseas workers? This episode, that's what! Tune in for an update on our week in lofty La Paz and an interview with a very special guest.
In our second-ever episode, Langham Preaching's Igor Améstegui is our first-ever interviewee! We also chat about downloads, densities and diseases of the evangelical variety. Listeners who can pay attention for the full 30 minutes may or may not be entitled to a free ice-cream.
Unfortunate band-names, useful hand-signals and Canadian odysseys: it's all here in episode 1 of our brand-new podcast!
