Penner shares about the global marketplace for peas, chickpeas and lentils. This episode was recorded on January 10th, 2025.“ One of the things that I've been telling Canadian farmers… is to forget about being the only show in town anymore. Now you have Australia producing more red lentils than Canada does. You have Russia, you have Kazakhstan, and you have the US production going up there as well too…So you need to think globally about not just demand, but the supplies as well.” - Chuck PennerPenner shares about drivers both on the supply side and the demand side that are impacting the trajectory of these global and domestic markets. The Bank of Canada's 25-bp June rate cut and statement bolster the view that dollar bears tired of waiting for the Fed could retain the loonie-bear view until a more-dovish US move unfolds, according to the latest FX Moment podcast. Host Audrey Childe-Freeman, Bloomberg Intelligence's chief G-10 FX strategist, talks to Stuart Paul, US and Canada economist at Bloomberg Economics, about the BoC and Fed near-term dynamics and currency implications. Canada's more-advanced economic cycle vs. the US justifies the early policy action from the BoC and validates the yield-driven loonie bearish case against the US dollar, euro and sterling. Given the Canadian-US dollar proxy qualities, these views will most likely hold when euro-dollar and/or sterling-dollar bulls return.
Andee and Tyler from Act.ion_plan are back to join us for our Travel Tips segment of the podcast, and today's topic is Acadia National Park in Maine! Tune in to hear about a few hiking trails and the campground they stayed at in Acadia, as well as a few other things to do nearby! Thunder Hole note: All websites still say to go 2 hours before high tide. Like we mentioned, we went there two hours before, as well as a few other times throughout the day, and never got to see it at is fullest. Andee and Tyler mentioned it looked to be ¾ to low tide. Perhaps the best time to see it is the posted sign, 2 hours before high tide, but it just doesn't always thunder? Always do your own research and due diligence before making a decision. all right so Andy and Tyler welcome back thank you for giving us all the details on your travel and how you got there in episode one so today we're going to be talking about one specific location that you guys have really enjoyed so where are we talking about oh we're gonna talk about a kadia national park and that's in Maine right that is in Maine yep towards the I guess it's towards the middle yeah southern side so what makes a kbso special for you guys well this year when we went was actually our first year going that was our go last year when we for our first year of travels but we had a couple mishaps and so we never got to work our way up there so this year when we made it it was like the huzzah we did it perfect now for someone who likes to do what type of activities you got kind of a mix of activi is up there so it's a national park there's a lot of hiking um it's near the ocean so there's water sports although it's might be a little cold for that um there's the seashore so there's um stuff to do on the seashore um you can cross across into an island at low tide and then it's also a historic town that um has a lot of history from people that would go up there to escape the heat during the summer months so uh there's all sorts of activities it's it's got shopping too for people who want to do that it's kind of a destination Town nice now to get the full ay experience how long do you think somebody should plan to stay there we stayed a week um I would say probably too because there was a lot um to do in the first night day um it rained so there wasn't much that we could do for like the hiking um uh we stayed at one of the campgrounds in the National Park uh it's called scoic n some Campground I think and they actually um certain times they have a shuttle that takes you actually to like the downtown area nice now you guys have a bigger rig so you were probably unhooking and driving your truck everywhere right was it pretty like you needed a car to get everywhere right yeah cuz I remember when we went to aadia there's some of those mountains you feel like you're really climbing up them for a while yeah we did um the Cadillac Mountain and you can drive up there or you can hike up there we drove and then hiked that that was a neat drive up to Cadillac Mountain yeah we went up to Cadillac Mountain for um Sunrise one morning and that was beautiful yeah we'll have to try that do that next time we go up there we missed it that's just a reason to get back there right exactly yeah Cadillac Mountain that's it's the first glimpse of Sunrise when you're on the East Coast that's the first that you're up I forget the altitude but that's like the first place the Sun hits on the East Coast oh yeah I didn't know that think when we were up there we watched the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain we did a bunch of stuff in the park and then we came back and watched the sunset from the same location it was pretty neat yeah oh well yeah what time of year did you guys go we actually went for the 4th of July um I was very very looking at a camp spot I think like I think like a couple days before and then we stay for a few days after the 4th of July so we got to see like the F they do like this huge firework like Extravaganza and everything too um down in Bar Harbor wow very cool now I guess probably in July a lot of those water sports were um still pretty active oh yeah because I think when we went we went in November so it was um very chilly a lot of things were closed um so we kind of had the town to oursel and it wasn't overly crowded which was nice but we did see a lot of areas for like kaying and bike rentals but they were obviously all shut down in the winter um that would have been really fun to experience in the summertime the beauty of visiting Acadia in November I think they closed the last week in October but the beauty of visiting in November is it's empty but at the same time like Bar Harbor shuts down so there was like we went to one restaurant like the entire time when we were in Bar Harbor yeah it was packed when they were there it was all sorts of activity I imagine how was that the four I imagine it's probably the most crowded it gets the summertime the 4th of July weekend how was maneuvering that Campground the summer parking how was that so the campground we stayed at was across from Bar Harbor so it was not super busy it's on the other side there's another Island over there so it was what a 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor 30 40 yeah 30 30 something like that um so our Campground is not super busy yeah um very peaceful over there getting into Bar Harbor though you probably get up early if you want to get there for the crowd uh we went we went hiking on the uh I think it's just called The Beach Walk yeah which is a Scenic walk that uh people used to do back in the day and so um we got up early and walked that in the morning and it was very yeah we got to walk the dogs and they were all excited because they got to go out and do a little hike with us yeah so is it pretty dog friendly in aadia did you find um with some spots yes there was other places that um said said like no dogs allowed and it like on recreation.gov is where I found like a lot of the different things and they said don't bring your dog like almost but but there was some that most to the National Park is dog friendly yeah and then going in the summertime I'm sure I know in that first episode you touched on the app goie you downloaded in the summertime having a dog if you're doing a trail where they're not dog friendly having that temperature sensor where you can get notified on your phone the temperature and the RV I'm sure you used that when you were in aadia yeah we're pretty comfortable with how we manage the dogs we usually have full hups so we leave the AC on and then we check them every couple hours um through the gooby and um through the through the ring uh cameras so um they're fine we we don't usually take the dogs to a lot of our activities we usually um do separate activities just for them so we'll take them to the forest or whatever we'll take them for walks and then we'll go do our thing so they do sit in in the the motor home for most of our travels yeah on their own little Adventure cool so what about um like once the sun goes down and it's later what was there to do at night um there's the whole down down near Bar Harbor area that you can go and and shop and eat and there's a little bit of nightlife I wasn't expecting it for there to be honest because it seems like the town that like everyone just wants to go shopping and then eating and then that's about it but there was a couple places that you can go at night when we went to Bar Harbor and ATI was actually before we got our van so we just we drove we stayed in a hotel and um we stayed the far Harbor Inn which was beautiful and they had an awesome restaurant they had a really good spa for anybody that you know wants a little bit of TLC and relaxation when they're there definitely check that out but the hiking and all the different Trails were pretty awesome as well yeah any of your favorite Trails or anywhere that you went there that you um really enjoyed we like that beachwalk yeah the beachwalk was fun Cadillac Mountain which we already talked about um there's the um Island that you can cross over to at low tide speaking of low tide I think when we went there was um what was that area where when it was really low and the waves came in a Thunder Hole Thunder Hole oh we we did see that that's on the beach I remember Thunder Hole it the sign that it tells you I think it tells you to go at a certain time at high tide or two hours before high tide I think it's wrong now because we drove around that loop I think four or five times trying to hit it at the right time we never saw it when it was like blasting you know way up did do you remember like what time frame like in relation to high tie that was by chance or was it just we got lucky we I think we got lucky we get lucky a lot Andy's extremely luy so oh yeah it was early morning it was like seven to 8 o'clock in the morning because reles high low time there's a another group and they're like oh it's actually going like if I had to guess based on where the tide was I would guess it was close to low tide I probably was not the peak low tide but it was probably 3/4 of the way through low tide that's just a guess though based on what the tide looked like I have no idea what it was looked at like at low tide though so yeah it's one of those things you want to manage your expectations cuz you know you see videos of it looks amazing but if you get there at the wrong time it's like it doesn't really look like too much we were there I think we saw it was blasting pretty high but it wasn't you know what we had seen before on videos but the first time we went there I don't think it was even making a noise yeah it was pretty unimpressive we probably should explain for people who aren't familiar Thunder Hole it's almost like an underwater cave right the way the tide comes in it like it sucks the water and it just blasts it makes like a thunderous sound that's how I remember video of it too yeah yeah you walk down in and there's a little cave and like yeah it's pretty Co it's definitely something you want to check out if you go to um aadia for sure so as far as um I know we've talked about there's a lot of different restaurants and options but anything favorite wise for breakfast lunch or dinner yeah if you're in a kadia you definitely want to do Lobster there's a little lobster shop that we went to kind of Cool vibe if you're able to think of it I'll I'll keep it in this podcast and I'll put a link in the description so people can check it out there we go we can we'll send it to you afterwards they'll find it yeah definitely not a shortage of good food and I think too like if you're driving through New England towards Acadia put um I don't know if you guys did this but we stopped in um Portland Maine first and that actually we did too you did too and then while you're making that drive up north we passed or we actually stopped at the LL Bean I don't know if it was the headquarters but they have a huge outlet and if you're looking to get hiking gear or anything LL Bean they have everything you possibly need you can make a stop there on your way to a to Acadia look out for the L Bean shop and then enjoy aadia Bar Harbor nice yeah and if you want to drive farther north you can hit that Canadian border which is a really neat area up there yeah very true that's not far you keep going the Eastern Eastern most point um they got a lot of cool towns you can cross over into Canada it's very neat area you can go to the Roosevelt uh park that's up there and see all the history of all the New Yorkers that used to go up there to vacation and they have a whole museum on the the Canadian US relations and all that kind of stuff it's a lot of fun yeah that and there's a bunch of ligh houses up there too yep lot of ligh houses oh perfect so bring your passports if you want to extend your uh extend your T your travels and just go into the or even just to do a day trip it the day trips were totally worth going too and don't let the Border agents actually they'll ask you all sorts of random questions but they just they just talk tough that's a good tip don't get intimidated yeah pretty much here for the ligh houses right cool so we're going to segment into the 3 two one countdown of final three questions of the podcast so what are three things to do in or around aadia that you would recommend doing definitely the cic mountain yep Cadillac would be number one hiking and driving would you have a I mean obviously hiking takes a bit longer but yeah I mean if you like hiking then go for it um the driving and then doing the hike afterwards was yeah you get to the top and there's some little little hiking you can do up there it is we hiked around the top too and it's neat it's it's just a huge Boulder is what it seems like you're walking I I forget how far we walked but it was a really neat and we'll overlay some photos we took when we were doing that if you're watching this on YouTube but it is a neat hike yeah around the top and beautiful view of the harbor yeah yeah Bar Harbor yep the porcupine Islands you can look out and see beachwalk I would do um there's a little there's a little Beach area next to the beachwalk at the beginning of it um that's kind of cool you could check out in a little Cove uh you cross over to the island that would be something fun to do and if anybody had two complaints or things that they wish they had prepared for what would they be about aadia or the Bar Harbor area it's okay if it rains you can still do things yeah might might be really rainy I like how you flip that into a positive but it's still fun just to do something like just get a rain jacket get an umbrella like you could still walk around yeah be prepared with the rain Jack when we were main the entire time we were Maine it was raining so um be prepared to have rain yeah the the other complaints would be that it's a tourist town there's going to be lots of people there you know it's it caters to the healthy so be prepared to spend some money and lobster will be expensive too so unless you want to just hike you know if you want to enjoy the the night life just be prepared that it is a tourist town all right one last question what is one thing you simply cannot leave a Cadia National Park without doing getting Lobster how yeah probably Lobster I think it was worth it then it was worth the you have to do main lobster that's yeah what are the the lobster with the B what was that the roll can't leave without getting lobster roll at least once gotta are you guys hot lobster roll or cold lobster roll people I like both I don't know I think I only had cold but I feel like cot would be better yeah I like hot yeah on the like y Lobster soup's pretty good too Lobster Lobster bis yeah so we'll link that restaurant you guys went to like I mentioned before and yeah Andy and Tyler thank you guys for coming on the show again look at the first episode we watched and where can my audience find out more about you guys um just Instagram follow us on Instagram hit up Andy she'll talk to you perfect and that's Instagram action plan act. iore plan Andy and Tyler thank you guys for coming on thank you thank you guys

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada's health care system isn't living up to its promise, and he plans to add billions more in funding. Trudeau said wait times in emergency departments have become dangerously long, people are waiting too long for essential surgeries and millions of Canadians are without a family doctor. “For generations, public health care has been a core part of what it means to be Canadian. It's built on a promise that no matter where you live, or what you earn, you will always be able to get the medical care you need. But right now, our health care system isn't living up to that promise,” Trudeau said. “Canadians deserve better,” he said. Trudeau's Liberal Party government has presented a new health care funding offer that would see Ottawa shift $196 billion Canadian (US$146 billion) over the next 10 years to the provinces and territories, which oversee health care in the country. The government has set conditions for the extra funding by asking for commitments to upgrade health data collection and digital medical records. The premiers have long been asking for more money and pressure increased as the health care system became further stressed by the pandemic. Burned out, understaffed health workforce and emergency rooms could not keep pace with demand. About one-quarter of the offer, $46 billion Canadian (US$34 billion), is new money. The premiers of Canada's provinces say the offer will increase the federal share of health care costs to 24% next year, far short of the 35% the provinces and territories were demanding. Still, most premiers appeared ready to accept the offer even as they promised the health care talks were not over. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
The Canadian Seed Growers Association (CSGA) has a new affiliation agreement with its seven regional branches. The agreement includes the Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers, Saskatchewan Seed Growers, and the Manitoba Seed Grower Associations. CSGA Executive Director Doug Miller says with the industry going through a seed industry modernization initiative it's important to have unity and a clear messageOverall demand for farm equipment is projected to remain strong into 2023, despite rising interest rates and a weakening Canadian US exchange rate. Farm Credit Canada's 2023 outlook for the farm equipment market indicates demand is being supported by strong farm cash receipts, even with commodity prices softening from peak levels. FCC Chief agricultural economist J.P. Gervais believes as supply chains recover, equipment manufacturers are expected to increase the delivery of new equipment orders. But inventory levels will remain below pre-pandemic levels and will remain tight beyond 2024.Gervais will talk about the farm equipment sector and the recent food and beverage report.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we dive into migration and immigration patterns. From a macro view, humans are the very essence of any productive economy. They are the labor force who create businesses, produce goods and services, pays taxes to support governments in their endeavours and so on. How humans choose to allocate their lives and the reasons for those decisions ripple out from a micro level, especially if they are expanding their activities in favour of upcoming trends. Economic opportunities and political ideologies have always been two significant reasonings for migration and immigration behaviours, and in 2020, we are seeing the largest form of migration in North America since the early 80s. People came to North America for opportunities, and or to escape terrible ideologies. 2020 can be the start to an expanding problem which may cause the need for immigrants to replace the lack of economic productivity in North America. We sit down with Matthew Silver, Founder of Silver Immigration who specializes in cross-border immigration needs for Canadian/US citizens. Matthew's insights on migration trends and its relation to political strategies is something most people do not talk about on a day-to-day basis. The reality is, any type of cross border activity comes down to one thing - an official document which certifies someones ability to work in either the US or Canada. Matthew's insight certainly are in line with recent political and economic trends, as some North Americans are looking to cross the borders between Canada and United States, to escape their respective country. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/newgenmindset/message

Continuing with cafeteria quarantine, Caitlin and Laura review where they are at. Caitlin doesn’t have the kids, courtesy of a toy going in the toilet. Laura gives an update about how she’s dealing with her personal COVID-induced crisis. Oh and programming note: The Canadian/US border is now officially closed until July 21, 2020. Host Elliot Michael gold interviews John Barbour, born on April 24, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is an actor, comedian, television host known as host of the NBC reality television series Real People, for which he was also a creator and co-produce and is the only performer in TV to win Emmys for both entertainment and news shows. Barbour moved to the United States in the early 1960s. His comedy act, particularly his 1965 album It's Tough to Be White, dealt in part with civil rights and black-white relations. In 1971, he hosted a local daytime talk show on CBS-owned KNXT (now KCBS-TV) in Los Angeles. He also hosted the pilot for The Gong Show in the mid-1970s (walking away from the show in objection to its farcical premise and forcing producer Chuck Barris to step in front of the cameras as host), and was a regular panelist on the 1988 Canadian (US syndicated) version of Liar's Club. Barbour portrayed game show host Harry Monte in a 1975 episode of Sanford and Son. Barbour was the executive producer of the game show That **** Quiz Show (That Awful! Quiz Show) hosted by Greg & John Rice in 1982. Barbour wrote and narrated Keith Burns' documentary Ernie Kovacs: Television's Original Genius. He also directed and wrote the 1992 documentary The JFK Assassination: The Jim Garrison Tapes. This film covers the investigation of District Attorney Jim Garrison, who, after the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy, decided to further investigate the official report given by the Warren Commission. The documentary hypothesizes connections between the assassination and the FBI, the CIA, the Mafia, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and other organizations and foreign affairs issues. The film won an award in 1993 at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. He directed and wrote another documentary, “The American Media And The Second Assassination of President John F. Kennedy,” which released to specific audiences in 2017, but saw a broader audience in 2019 when it was showcased in iTunes, Vimeo and Amazon. This follow-up documentary is an extension of his critically acclaimed "The Garrison Tapes," and has received significant praise for its detail and exposition on the subjects of the JFK murder and the evolution of contemporary Fake News. IMdB has scored the documentary 8.6 out of a possible 10. Rememories for Seniors - Hosted by Elliot Michael Gold “Nothing returns a memory as clearly as a song.” It only takes a few bars of the music we listened to at a sock hop, on our first date, on the car radio, or in our bedroom when something was happening that was important in our lives. When you and I hear the music we listened to when we were teenagers, those memories flow back.

Ann talks about the extensive research she did for this WWII novel (including reading the seven volumes of Winston Churchill’s series TWICE), how her best marketing successes have been old-fashioned face-to-face contacts and using super-fans to spread the word, and how she’s working on a two-part video series to share what she learned about self-publishing with others considering this route. Ann comes from a family of adventurous women. An immigrant twice herself (to Canada and to the USA,) she understands from personal experience the challenges of being uprooted, either by choice or not, and remaking a life in a new place. She writes historical fiction, flash fiction, and short non-fiction. She has published three fictional articles in the news magazine of the British Home Child Advocacy and Research Association, and is a guest blogger for the award winning writers' blog, Writers in the Storm. A dual Canadian-US citizen, she resides in Mesa, Arizona with her husband, Art, and their Old English Sheepdog. She spends summers in Toronto, Canada, with family. When not writing, she can be found at the golf course, or making music with her church choir. To learn more about Ann, click here.
Lin talks about how much she loved Green Book, winner of TIFF’s People’s Choice Awards, and its realistically diverse supporting cast surrounding the main story. Margrit tries to learn about North-American middle-graders from Kids Baking Championships, but comes out with questions about why the onus is always on the minority to conform to dominant cultures. Plus, what the heck are bar cookies? Question of the episode: What stories have you seen that actually walks the talk of diversity? That shows marginalized people in everyday real ways. Join the conversation on Twitter at @World_ofStories or email us at worldofstoriespodcast@gmail.com. Transcript Margrit 00:00 Welcome to World of Stories. I'm Margrit and my pronoun is they. Lin 00:04 I'm Lin and my pronoun is she and we're here to talk about diversity and storytelling. Margrit 00:09 There's so much awful stuff going on in the world around this. And I thought we could counteract that a bit. So what are you loving this week, Lin? Lin 00:17 So at the annual Toronto International Film Festival ended this past weekend. And on the last day of the festival, they always have a free screening of the film that won the People's Choice Award. And this year, the film that one is called Green Book directed by Peter Farrelly and it was so good. Margrit 00:34 I've heard about this movie and then quickly read up about it. And I'm so happy to hear you've seen it, would you think of it? It is based on a true story. It's set in the 1960s about a Black pianist, played by Mahershala Ali, the guy from Moonlight and the pianist is about to go on tour to play a series of concerts across the American deep south, And because being a Black guy and the deep south in the 1960s isn't necessarily the safest thing, he hires a driver played by Viggo Mortensen, who is an Italian American from the Bronx, who has a reputation for being a little rough around the edges and being able to take care of business, so to speak. Yeah, he's like, that kind of--the bouncer at the club type of character. Which actually, he is a bouncer at a club. And so it's this contrast in different personalities where the pianist is very highly educated, very cultured, very well spoken. He's a little eccentric, you know, he lives in an apartment above Carnegie Hall. He sits on a throne. He has like elephant tusks and his apartment is a little wacky. And then the driver's from this working class family, like I said, rough around the edges. Not very well educated. But it's so good. It's a little bit like Driving Miss Daisy, but race and gender swapped? Lin 02:06 I think so yeah, I haven't actually seen Driving Miss Daisy, but it sounds like it could be a good comparison. So the movie starts with the driver being a little bit racist. I mean, he doesn't outright hate Black people or other minorities, but it's part of the society that he's from, and there's a lot of systemic racism that he's bought into. But as they're traveling across the country, especially in the southern US, where segregation was still a thing at the time, his eyes are open to both the subtle racism that is has been ingrained in him and then also the very overt racism in the society that they're traveling through. Margrit 02:52 So stuff like microaggressions that we still have to this day. Lin 02:56 Yeah, totally. And you know, in the movie, At the beginning of the movie, he uses racial slurs quite easily not just for Black people but for East Asians and for all sorts of people. But I think he uses them without realizing they're offensive. And that's part of what he's learning as he goes is that these little things, you know, they might not seem a lot to him but they do add up and they do make a big impact. And then, again as they're traveling through these different communities, there's a lot of racism towards toward the pianist that is blatant outright racism, you know. So he's on stage and he's entertaining these people and this white audience just loves him. All these shows are sold out, but the minute he steps off stage, he's not allowed to use the same washroom as them and he's not allowed to eat in the dining room with the rest of them. So it's a really interesting-- Margrit 04:01 Illustration. Yeah, yeah, the segregation. Lin 04:05 Yeah, exactly. And so, you know, throughout the story, the pianist also, he starts off very hoity toity and sort of hides behind his culture and education. But through his interactions with the driver, he realizes that, you know, he needs to relax a little, he's led a very lonely life. Because he's isolated, he's not really accepted by any of the social groups. You know, he's not accepted by the white community. He's not really accepted by the Black community either. So, you know, the way I just have described this movie makes it sound really heavy, but it's actually very, very funny. And the dialogue between the driver and the pianist is really witty, really sharp and they trade barbs back and forth. And so it's able to bring a degree of humor to the story without diminishing any of the seriousness that the movie's dealing with. Margrit 04:58 Right and it sounds like It's trying to illustrate the sort of intersections and the way that we might have relative privilege compared to other people and how that pans out in interactions and what that implication has in real life. I love that kind of storytelling when we're dealing with the political issues that are embedded a narrative that allows for character--for like, realistic characters and a good plot and sort of real interactions between humans. And it seems to me like Mahershala Ali specializes in starring in these kinds of movies where, like, really important political issues of the day are told from an emotional, human scale viewpoint and like in Moonlight--like he does in Moonlight in such a brilliant way. Lin 05:49 Yeah, definitely. So I think that Green Book is very similar to Moonlight in that way. And one other thing I wanted to highlight about Green Book is that at the beginning of the movie, when the story is still in New York, they've cast people of color as extras and in small roles that really reflects the diversity of the city. And I don't think we see that very often. It's usually people of color show up when they need to have a person of color in a particular role. But it's less often that we see them just being people on the street or, you know, in this case, there is an East Asian actor who was one of the drivers that was interviewing for that role. And there's a bartender who's also an East Asian actor. And I remember when the bartender came up on the screen, I was surprised, like I actually was taken aback that "Oh my goodness, there is an East Asian person playing a bartender in this story." When it would have made more sense or not made more sense, but I would have expected just having a white guy there but-- Margrit 06:50 It just shows you the way in which we've been inured to certain kind of typecasting in terms of race and ethnicity. Lin 06:57 Right. Yeah, exactly. And then the other person of color I want to mention is the pianist has a butler slash valet assistant person and it's played by South Asian actor named Iqbal Theba who's been in tons and tons of things, actually. He's a very--I think he has a very successful career, even though he might not be a household name. And I know him from Glee. He plays the president of the--sorry, not the president--the principal of the high school a Glee. So, yeah, and so it's great to see these these minority people of color, just being everyday people who, like they do in real life. Margrit 07:39 Oh, indeed, I cannot wait to see this movie. Lin 07:41 It's coming out in November 2018. So be sure to check it out. Margrit 07:45 I will for sure. Lin 07:46 So Margrit, what have you been loving this week? Margrit 07:49 Well, I've been trying to immerse myself in the world of middle graders because I'm revising my middle grade manuscript and I did not have a childhood here. So I can't really relate to Canadian-US, you know, Western kids going through middle school here. You know, you hear all the stories and I just--on the one hand I want to veer away from, you know, painting it in very cliched ways. And so I've been watching kids baking championships, on Food Network. It is so lovely. It is just--the kids' are enthusiastic and they're so adorable. And they help one another and care for one another and they're so incredibly creative. Lin 08:32 I love baking shows and I watch a lot of Great British Baking Show. Is it something like that? Margrit 08:38 Yeah, I love cooking shows. I think they're really relaxing. And I especially like this one. And I appreciated that the producers have taken care to cast a diverse group of kids and one of the things that's been a little bit irking me as I was watching this, was the assumption that people from dominant culture have about the things everyone should know. So maybe it's because I'm an immigrant myself, and so I don't have a lot of in-culture knowledge or anything like that. But you know, in one of the episodes, the kids were asked to make desserts that evoke a day at the ballgame and incorporate popcorn. And the white kids had no problem with it. But some of the kids of color were at a total loss about what a day at the ballgame entails. And I am too, I have to say, and maybe that's why I noticed it. Lin 09:26 Yeah, that sounds really awkward. And I can totally relate to that. Because even though I did grow up in Canada, I never went to baseball games as a kid. You know, my family didn't have a lot of money when we first came here. And so live games were completely out of our budget. So if I had been on that show, even though I may have watched plenty of baseball games on TV, I wouldn't have known what happens on a live game. Margrit 09:49 So one of the girls was like, I'm not really sure what happens at the ballgame, and she was totally feeling bad. And she was trying to rationalize why this was her problem, you know, and it was heartbreaking. Because it was not her problem, she should not have been put in that position. But again, it naturalizes the idea that the onus is always on marginalized people to act in the dominant culture and to know everything about the dominant culture. And whereas the reverse is not true, right. And in another episode, a kid of East Asian descent had no idea what bar cookies were, do you know what bar cookies are? Lin 10:28 No, is it a cookie that looks like-- Margrit 10:32 Quiz time. This is what I thought and this is what this kid thought. And so he found a really clever workaround. He pre cut his base cookies to look like bars. And then he built this amazing cookie with various textures and really, really awesome. But the presenters were kind of elbowing each other, you know, the adult presenters who should have been adult and they're both white. Right? And I know when they were chuckling at the kid's ignorance, which totally irked me, because, you know, like, it just shows that just going through the motions and merely casting a diverse group of people is not doing enough for diversity if you don't do the hard work of checking your assumptions, right? Why would an East Asian kid have to know what bar cookies are? Do you know how to make mochi off the top of your head? Or do you know how to make mooncake even if you're a pastry chef? I'm sorry, I might just get a little bit riled up by that. Lin 11:25 No, I totally get that because you know pro forma efforts at diversity, I think, can be more harmful than no efforts at all, right? Like, if you're going to say, "Oh, we're being diverse," but you're not actually diverse than it just shows people how disingenuous you are, which is more hurtful in a lot of ways, I think. Margrit 11:45 It is more harmful, especially--especially for this girl, Natasha, who felt so bad and she was trying to make excuses like she was caught not knowing her lesson, right. So she will internalize this feeling that she's not good enough because she doesn't know absolutely everything about the dominant culture, right? Anyway. Lin 12:02 But I'm gonna have to go what bar cookies are now. Margrit 12:06 Yeah, right. Learn up because if you're going to end up on some sort of baking championship. But kids baking championships is a pleasure to watch. And it's all thanks to the kids who are really amazing and lovely. Lin 12:21 Oh, that's good. That's great. Okay, so we have, we're gonna have a question for every episode. And this week's question is going to be for our listeners. What have you been watching that actually walks the talk of diversity. Is there a show or a book or anything else you've come across that shows marginalized people in real everyday ways? Margrit 12:42 Yeah. So we will look forward to your comments. And the way that you can voice those comments is on Twitter at @World_ofStories and we'd love to hear what you think about this. Lin 13:01 Yeah, we really do. And thank you so much for listening and stay tuned for our next episode.
Marine Conservation can be a tricky business at times. This episode covers one of those tricky times and it has to do with the porbeagle shark. The porbeagle shark is a "mini-great white" that only feeds on fish. It's population on the east coast has dwindled to 10% of its initial population. The Canadian government has put them on the Species At Risk list to help protect them; however, the shark crosses the Canadian-US border where it is not protected and it is fished and allowed to be taken. Researchers in Canada are worried after they have seen an increased amount of social media posts with dead porbeagle sharks that were legally caught. What would you do in this predicament?
