A roundtable discussion follow up on the CHOICE SPF testing scandal - a response to some bad takes I've seen circulating on social media about how the brands involved aren't responsible, and that the responsibility lies entirely with the testing lab that was committing fraud. Unfortunate and unpopular truth: that's not how that works. This discussion featured Dr Rania Ibrahim PhD, coming at it from the clinical testing expert POV, and Avril Love, from the legal and regulatory POV. If you are a brand, this episode is probably an important one for you to tune into to understand what your responsibilities are, and how you can carry them out. For consumers, the takeaways of this convo would be super helpful in learning how to find trustworthy brands. This episode was almost entirely led by audience questions - thank you to everyone who submitted thoughtful prompts and comments! Interested in supporting the podcast? Send us a textA toast to legacy, a clash over creativity, and a bottle that could change how we drink. We open with a tribute to Peter Fraser—winemaker, mentor, and quiet force at Yangarra—then step straight into the friction points shaping wine right now: the awards that reward meaningful storytelling, the slogan that sparked a pile-on, and the packaging pivot that's bigger than aesthetics. We unpack the Wine Communicator Awards and why Halliday's podcast comeback matters when trust is hard-won. Max Allen's recognition is a reminder that longform writing still anchors the culture—holding memory, nuance, and accountability. From there, we tackle the Next Crop t-shirt controversy. Was it a bad call? Yes. But the deeper lesson is how to build safe creative lanes for emerging leaders: responsible messaging, clear guardrails, and mentorship that keeps bold ideas alive rather than shutting them down.Innovation takes a more practical turn with Brown Brothers' aluminium wine bottle. Lighter to ship, infinitely recyclable, and container-deposit friendly, it addresses the carbon drag of glass without asking the wine to change. We explore why consumers push back, how category cues evolve, and what it takes to make sustainability feel like an upgrade. Then we zoom out to France, where grower protests signal a global reality: oversupply hurts. Distillation aid and vine pull schemes buy time, but the honest fix is right-sizing plantings, shifting styles, and aligning with demand. For a festive detour, we fact-check Netflix's Champagne Problems—funny, charming, and gloriously wrong on méthode traditionnelle. It's a teachable moment that starts with pop culture and ends in real craft. We wrap with something practical: a standout Aldi Malbec that nails benchmark Argentinian style—dark fruit, firm tannin, bright acid—and doubles as a great learning bottle. And a heads-up: we're about to taste through some of Australia's most iconic wines, from Grange to regional legends, to map where heritage and modern taste meet.If you enjoyed this episode, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves wine (or loves a good debate), and leave a quick review to help more listeners find us. Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.   TGTPTU books its final perp in the 20-movie-long shooting spree of Season 15 – Squib Games with—dead or alive, you're coming with me—ROBOCOP (1987), a pod favorite.   Like last week's film Walker (played by Ed Harris and not Peter Weller), this week's movie concerns a man caught up in the machinery of his time, except Officer Alex Murphy (played by Peter Weller and not Ed Harris) is a character at least moderately sympathetic, despite his chosen profession. Similarly but instead of returning to the past to satire the violence of American imperialism, this week's feature directed by Paul Verhoeven (his first American film) occurs in the Reagan-esque future of the 1990s to satire the violence of American corporatism. And while the commonalities between this season's final pairing continue, the word count for these show notes is limited.   Jack is out this week. Filling his guest host spot is pod regular Erik W. Van Der Wolf from the Blood and Popcorn podcast.    This ep—while host Ken reveals the origin of his large-frame eyeglasses fetish, host Thomas introduces his replacement for regulating future seasons' discussions, and host Ryan does research and independently comes to the wrong conclusion that RoboCop's action scenes aren't very good—guest Erik weighs in on matters of substance and industry with a slide deck and laser light/hologram show and talking points on how modern filmmaking trends might get in the way of the “lightning in a bottle” confluence of unexpected events that creates an amazing film like Verhoeven's RoboCop and likely prevents another good RoboCop today, a problem not just of franchises but of the modern movie condition of IP and rebootquels. The 3D animation between slides is remarkable; the interactive hologram of Erik as a helmetless RoboCop, Ken as Cain, Ryan as the jetpack, and Thomas as the toxic sludge kill are all mind-blowing. Unfortunate that this is an audio medium. And there are licensing issues. And lawyers.   A special thanks segment and a limited version of our end-of-season film rankings conclude the episode. Also, Season 16's director is announced.  I'd buy that for a dollar!   (The revivified, cybernetic remains of SF legend Harlan Ellison approach with hand extended to accept your dollar.)    ((Post-postscript: There will be two more eps released this season (and calendar year) as i. sometimes you've got to sing for your dinner and ii. our three unwise men will finally be putting the Christ back into Christmas with 2025's Winter Holidays episode.))   THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Hannah French with the second of two programmes exploring the lives of two 16th Century Popes: Leo X and Clement VII, and the music that surrounded them.Having been brought up together in the wealthy and influential Florentine household of the Medicis, cousins Giovanni & Giulio were always destined for greatness. As Pope Leo X, Giovanni was a lavish patron of the arts. He sanctioned major renovations on St Peter's Basilica in Rome, extended the Sistine Chapel Choir, promoted the study of Greek, Arabic & Hebrew, commissioned works from artists such as Raphael & Peruzzi, and maintained a private orchestra as well as the official papal musicians. In order to fund these lavish artistic interests, Leo X encouraged the purchase of indulgences - remissions of the temporal punishment for sins – which could only be afforded by the most wealthy. Leo was also portrayed by his opponents as a man of gross excess; there were suggestions of sexual impropriety, favouritism and immorality, all of which were fuel to the fire of the burgeoning Protestant Reformation in northern Europe. Needless to say, Leo spent way above the papal means, and when he died suddenly in 1521, the papal treasury was 400,000 ducats in debt. Leo's right-hand man throughout his papacy was his beloved cousin, Giulio de Medici. Within three months of Leo's election as Pope, Giulio had been made Archbishop of Florence, and just three more months down the line, he was appointed Cardinal of Santa Maria in Dominica. By 1517, Cardinal Giulio was made Vice-Chancellor of the Church (ie, second in command). He became deeply involved in the politics of England, France and the Holy Roman Empire, which would eventually backfire on him spectacularly…When Cardinal Giulio was elected to the heady heights of the Papacy in 1523, as Pope Clement VII, little did he know the struggles that lay ahead. There was already the threat of the Lutherans from northern Europe and the Turks were making in-roads into the east. Plus, there was the childish squabbling of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and King Francis I of France, who both demanded the Pope choose a side, leading to the Sack of Rome in 1527. And six years later, he had Henry VIII's divorce to deal with. All of this while having to impose austerity measures in an attempt to pay off some of the debts left by his own cousin!Like his cousin, Pope Clement VII was also a gifted musician. It's likely he too learned from the great composer Heinrich Isaac while growing up in Florence, and over the years he had dealings with the likes of Nicolas Gombert, Jean Mouton, Philippe Verdelot and Costanzo Festa as the music of the High Renaissance swirled around him.

Stoic Quote: Seneca on Being Unfortunate

Welcome to the Via Stoica Podcast, the podcast on Stoicism. In this Stoic Quotes episode, Benny reflects on the words of Seneca from On Providence, section 4:“You are unfortunate in my judgment, for you have never been unfortunate. You have passed through life with no antagonist to face you. No one will know what you were capable of, not even yourself.”Seneca reminds us that trials and obstacles are not punishments but opportunities. Without resistance, we never learn our limits or discover our inner strength. For the Stoics, hardship is the training ground for virtue, a test that sharpens self-knowledge and resilience.Benny explores how this insight connects to the Socratic principle of “know yourself,” the Stoic embrace of adversity as a teacher, and the mindset shift that transforms obstacles from burdens into opportunities for growth. From athletes seeking worthy opponents to Marcus Aurelius' reminder that “the obstacle is the way,” Stoicism teaches us that challenges reveal what we are truly capable of.Practical ReflectionsWhen facing obstacles, pause and ask: What is this teaching me about myself?Reframe difficulties as tests of character rather than punishments of fate.Remember past struggles you overcame; you are stronger than you imagine. For more, check out this related article on overcoming adversity:https://viastoica.com/stoic-freedomAnd if you're looking for more Stoic sayings, visit viastoica.com, where you'll find hundreds of quotes with full references to the original texts:https://viastoica.com/stoic-quoteshttps://viastoica.com/seneca-quoteshttps://viastoica.com/marcus-aurelius-quoteshttps://viastoica.com/epictetus-quotesMake sure to subscribe for more Stoic Quotes episodes every Friday, as well as our Tuesday interviews and longer discussions.Support the showhttps://viastoica.comhttps://viastoica.com/stoic-life-coachinghttps://viastoica.com/benny-vonckenhttps://x.com/ViaStoicainfo@viastoica.comProduced by: badmic.com

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Elizabeth: Hi Dr Cabral! Thank you for your informative podcast. I searched in past episodes & didn't find the answer to my question so I thought I'd write in. I'm a 49 year old woman & had bloodwork done for the first time a little over a year ago. Everything looked good except my ferritin was low at 9. For the next 12 months I took iron supplements 2-3 times a week & started eating more iron rich foods including red meat & beef liver pills. When ferritin was tested again it was only up to an 11. My PCP is now recommending I get an iron infusion. Are these safe? What might be the root cause of my low ferritin? I'm still menstruating but have never been heavy. I eat a balanced diet including meat & always have. I exercise 4-5x/ week. Could this just be genetic? Should I be concerned? Thx, Elizabeth            Carrieann: Hi Dr Cabral! I love listening to your podcasts. I have a rare disease called Mastocytosis. Do you have any recommendations for natural supplements that might help. I am currently taking vitamin C and Quercitin and it they do help. I would love to improve my gut but I am a little confused on how to go about doing that when I need to keep histamines low and all the things like probiotics, kimchi, bone broth are all high histamine. Thank you for your help!!                                                 Darren: Good day Dr. Cabral. I recently got diagnosed with folliculitis and eczema by a dermatologist who stated it was spurred by my skin reacting to my many sauna sessions and regular dry brushing. Unfortunate, cause I enjoy both. I abhored the idea, but the doctor recommended doxycycline antibiotics and mupirocin topical cream which did stem the constant itching, redness, flaking. I've no noticeable side effects from medication. What do you suggest I use post medication to ensure healthy gut and it reoccurring? I was thinking maybe the clean gut probiotic or daily detox. Keep up good work.                                                                                                                                                                                          Darren: Good day, Dr Cabral. It's me again. I asked this months ago, but never got a response. Maybe question got lost or your team pulled it given it can be perceived as controversial. I appreciate your Mindset & Motivational Monday shows and all the teachings from Dispenza etc about not stressing but focusing and living in the moment. However, how does one adhere to those practices if they were living in say a conflict zone where things are beyond their control like Congo, Palestine, Sudan? Where food isn't guaranteed but constant attacks are? I get if you choose not to answer on air. Keep up good work.                                                                                                                                                                                         Sheena: Hi Dr. C! Hope you are well. After doing a Food Sensitivity test, my results showed I'm allergic to cows milk dairy. Which, I already knew for years because every time I eat dairy, like clockwork, 2-3 days later, I'd break out really bad. And even though it only takes 2-3 days to happens, it takes me at least 4+ weeks to start to clear up. My question is, would it help if I were to take a Lactaid or a dairy intolerance pill? It seems that most of those pills help with gas and bloating, which I don't get. I just get really bad acne. But was hoping that I could take this before eating a meal that I'm not 100% sure about to prevent break outs. If not Lactaid, is there a pill you could recommend that could help? Thank you so much for answering my question and for being my health GURU! :)         Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions!    - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3452 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept?
