The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy took a sharp turn today when psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta, certified by Postpartum Support International, testified about a phone call that — according to her — never happened. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and is mounting an insanity defense built on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication, led by attorney Kevin Reddington.Jollotta told the court she saw Clancy just three times and eventually referred her to a program at Women & Infants Hospital. What happened after that, she said, she couldn't say — she never found out how the hospital assessed Clancy or why she wasn't admitted. That's where Reddington zeroed in, asking whether Jollotta knew the rejection stemmed from excessive medication, then reading a Women & Infants record stating the hospital had reached out to her and gotten no response. Jollotta flatly disputed that — she said she never spoke to Women & Infants, period. She also pushed back on any suggestion Clancy was chasing prescriptions, testifying she was trying to get off medication, not accumulate it, and noted she's personally treated five patients with postpartum psychosis, where hearing voices and visual hallucinations are documented symptoms.Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. His work centers on the legal rights of people impacted by AI systems and the organizations that use them.The legal ground under AI hiring is moving fast. In the past few months a state AI law got sued into a rewrite, a court handed down a ruling that shields bias audit data from view, and a new lawsuit opened a line of attack nobody was watching. If you buy, sell, or use AI hiring tools, this episode helps you stay on top of the shifting sands.Topics Discussed & Key Insights1. First, how to roll: governance before headlines.Marc's advice starts above the regulations. Your own governance is the key to successful risk mitigation. Get this part right and the rest gets much easier.* Before you track any law, ask why you want to use AI in the first place. If you have good answers, then ask how* Set principles for your organization — not for the whole world, for your organization. Let them drive your use cases, your vendor selection, and your evaluation criteria* Operate by them for real. A policy that lives on paper is worth nothing* Do this and you're already in compliance with most of the laws that could touch you. Everything below is what's shifting underneath that foundation2. Vendor liability is shifting fast — get ready now.For a long time, vendors selling hiring tools got a pass. How the customer used the tool was the customer's problem. That arrangement is breaking down.* In Mobley v. Workday, the court is letting claims proceed on the theory that the platform acts as an agent of its employer customers — which puts the same federal anti-discrimination laws that apply to employers on the platform* Plaintiffs go where the deep pockets are. Mega vendors like Workday and 8fold are the deep pockets* Employers are still independently on the hook. Vendor liability adds to yours, it doesn't replace it* Newer legislation points the same direction, and California's new regulations make bias testing itself evidence in court — more on that below* Since we recorded: the court refused to dismiss most of the remaining claims against Workday. The case keeps moving, and the core theory keeps surviving3. Bias audit data can be withheld — and that says a lot.A discovery ruling in the Workday case protected the company's bias testing data from the plaintiffs. Worth sitting with what that means.* The court held the data was privileged because lawyers curated it and the testing was done to provide legal advice — not for business use* Publicly advertising that you conduct bias testing did not waive the privilege* So the people alleging harm from the system may never see the data that would show whether the system harmed them* The bigger question: if the most important evidence about how these tools perform can be shielded, what does accountability actually look like? Proof may have to come from other directions4. There are new ways to hold these tools accountable.The Eightfold case shows creative lawyering finding routes into AI hiring that didn't exist a year ago.* The claim is built on the Fair Credit Reporting Act and privacy law — the argument is that AI-generated candidate scores are consumer reports, compiled without the required disclosures and consent* These theories don't require proving discrimination as a legal element, which makes them easier cases to bring* The target hasn't changed. It's still about how these tools treat people. There are just more ways to get there now5. Colorado is the cautionary tale: get aggressive, get crushed.Colorado passed the most rigorous state AI law in the country — mandatory risk management, impact assessments, a real duty of care. Then it got taken apart.* xAI sued to block the law. The DOJ intervened on xAI's side — the first time the federal government moved to invalidate a state AI law* The legislature rewrote the law under pressure. The replacement is a notice-and-transparency framework, delayed to January 2027* The lesson for everyone else: states that regulate AI aggressively are going to get sued by the federal government and the private sector. Plan around that reality6. Meanwhile, California quietly became the strictest.While everyone watched Colorado, California put real requirements on the books — and nobody has sued to stop them.* Under the FEHA regulations, conducting a documented bias test supports an employer's defense in discrimination litigation. Not conducting one supports the plaintiff. Records must be kept four years* The privacy agency's automated decision-making rules take effect January 2027: pre-use notice to applicants and employees, opt-out rights, and the right to demand how a system reached a decision about you* That last one matters. Can anyone actually explain how a frontier AI model reached its decision? For most of these tools, the honest answer is noFinal TakeawayThe laws will keep shifting. Colorado got rewritten, California's deadlines are coming, and the courts are redrawing vendor liability case by case. You can't chase all of it. Build the governance foundation, make vendors show you their evidence — your data, not just their study — and treat every recommendation a machine makes as the decision it really is. Good governance gets you more than 90% of the way there, as long as it's not just lip service. This is a public episode. Part 3 focuses on 1953-55, just as Rock n’ Roll was beginning to enter the mainstream. Matt The Cat digs up a great variety of styles this week as vocal groups, raw Rhythm & Blues, jump instrumentals, drinking songs and ballads take center stage. We’ll dig on some hits and misses from Amos Milburn, The Five Keys, Chuck Higgins, Gene & Eunice and Shirley & Lee. We’ll also hear some great debut records from Bobby Marchan and Sonny Knight, who would go on to greater success on other labels. A few rare vocal group sides are also featured. Bad Bunny is in the news this week for a mix of legal pressure, chart dominance, and a fresh wave of pop-culture reach. The biggest story is that Spanish-language coverage in El País says two lawsuits tied to the use of women's voices in his songs are now framing a broader debate over consent in reggaeton, with one case involving Tainaly Serrano Rivera and another involving Carliz de la Cruz, who is seeking $40 million over the phrase “Bad Bunny, baby.”[2][5] At the same time, his music is still performing at a historic level. Billboard-tracking coverage reported by Inkl says “DTMF,” the title track from Debí Tirar Más Fotos, has held No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs for 71 straight weeks as of the Aug. 8 chart, while “Nuevayol” remains right behind it at No. 2, showing that multiple songs from the album are still dominating streaming and radio conversations.[28] Spotify tracking from Kworb also shows Debí TiRAR MáS FOToS among his strongest albums by daily streams, with the album continuing to pull massive numbers even months after release.[12] His tour is also still making news. 20minutos reports that the Debí Tirar Más Fotos tour has become the highest-grossing tour in history never to visit the United States, with 3.1 million tickets sold across 55 dates and reported revenue of $467.5 million, which underscores how global his audience has become.[34] That same report says the tour has been a major marker for the international reach of Spanish-language music.[34] Bad Bunny is also expanding beyond traditional music spaces. Music and entertainment coverage notes that his track “EoO” has been included on the soundtrack for Spider-Man: Un nuevo día, linking him to a major Marvel release and keeping his name in the movie and soundtrack conversation.[22] Social and entertainment posts are also pushing his visibility around brand and culture moments, including recent attention tied to Adidas collaborations and a steady stream of fan-driven content across TikTok and Instagram.[24][36] There is also a political and cultural angle making headlines. Patrick Clancy sat in the witness box for the prosecution in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial — and by the time cross-examination finished, jurors had heard a very different story than the one that put him there. Plymouth Superior Court opened its first full week with a seven-minute 911 call, pajamas and exercise bands entered as physical evidence, and a fourteen-second phone call Patrick received after his children were already gone, with no idea what had happened on the other end of the line. The state leans hard on one detail: Patrick testified that the day before, Lindsay built a snowman with the kids and texted like everything was normal. Prosecutors call that proof she was lucid enough to plan. ADA Buckingham told jurors flatly that people with mental illness commit crimes every day and are still held responsible for them. Then the defense got its turn. Records showed Lindsay checked into McLean Hospital on New Year's Eve. She went to the emergency room. She told providers, repeatedly, about intrusive thoughts involving her own children. Women and Infants Hospital had already flagged overmedication and a possible misdiagnosis — a flag nobody ever answered. What the jury may not expect: both Patrick and Lindsay have filed separate civil lawsuits against the healthcare providers who treated her. The man testifying for the prosecution is, outside the courtroom, blaming the same system the state is asking jurors to look past. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta of Defense Diaries joins Tony Brueski to unpack what actually hurt the prosecution on cross-examination, what Massachusetts asks a jury with no medical background to decide, and what it means that the children's own father says the doctors failed first. In 1991, Larry Hardy founded the enduring Los Angeles-based label In the Red Records. Guided by Larry's personal taste for raw, "atonal garage music" and sonic extremes, the small operation has cultivated a catalog of over 300 titles, championing underground acts like Ty Segall, the Black Lips, and Jay Reatard. On August 21st, In the Red Records—in partnership with the newly revived Vengeance Records—will release Gravest Gravy by The Cramps. This previously unreleased 12-track album is sourced from the band's October 1977 sessions at Ardent Studios in Memphis, produced by Big Star's Alex Chilton. While those sessions produced early classics like Surfin' Bird and Human Fly, an entire album's worth of material had been shelved and lost to time. Larry recently discovered the original quarter-inch reels in the vault of Cramps guitarist Poison Ivy. Now, with preservation and restoration help from Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye, these legendary tracks are finally getting their first official release.

When an ancestor dies, most genealogists know the usual records to search. There's the death certificate, obituary, cemetery record, gravestone, probate file, and perhaps a church burial record. But there's another source that can be just as useful and is often overlooked. The funeral home. Funeral homes kept records for practical reasons. They needed to know who had died, where the person lived, where the funeral would be held, where the person would be buried, and who was responsible for the arrangements. Everybody comparing the Lindsay Clancy trial to the Nick Reiner case is comparing two people who spent years moving in opposite directions.Reiner's history, by his own public account, is one of leaving. Rehab from around age fifteen. Roughly seventeen stays by twenty-two per his 2015 People interview, some eighteen per The Hollywood Reporter. He told the LA Times he'd refuse to go or would walk out and live on the street.Clancy's history is one of asking. A postpartum program in late December of 2022 that, according to her lawsuit, noted her symptoms might be medication-driven, told her to taper the antipsychotic, and sent her home after a single day. A psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve. A last appointment with her psychiatrist that ran seventeen minutes.And there's a piece of the Reiner story almost nobody has picked up. Records reported by Fox affiliates show a yearlong conservatorship that expired in 2021. Nobody revoked it and nobody litigated it. When it lapsed, a man whose records reportedly include a schizophrenia diagnosis went back to two people in their seventies.Tony Brueski lays out why these are two entirely different failures, why fixing one does nothing for the other, and why the phrase everybody uses for both is the reason neither gets addressed. Four years after that order lapsed, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were dead in their Brentwood home and their son was in custody by nine fifteen that night. On the other coast, Lindsay Clancy's last appointment with her psychiatrist ran seventeen minutes, on January 23, 2023, according to her lawsuit. The following day is when her lawyers say she heard a voice.
