The radical '80s movie podcast hosted by the creators of the 1980s-themed comic Satan Ninja 198X.
Just in time for Easter weekend, Radicast 198X hops back to life with our thematically-appropriate discussion of the 1988 classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit. We also give an in-depth look at the 1981 book that inspired the movie, Who Censored Roger Rabbit? Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. All right! Our first Radicast Halloween Special--and we totally released it in time for Halloween! Right?! I’ve barely slept these past couple days in order to get this recorded and edited on time, so I can only assume that I totally succeeded. Fuck yeah! So, happy Halloween! We cover five (FIVE!) ‘80s horror films in this episode, from classics to delightfully terrible trash you’ve probably never heard of. We discuss and review Lifeforce (1985), Dolls (1987), Prince of Darkness (1987), The Lamp (1987, AKA The Outing), and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988). Probably our funniest episode so far. Certainly our drunkest. Jessica and I recently did that whole marriage thing, but instead of embarking on a honeymoon we sat down with Bob, one of my longtime best friends (ever since he discovered I had a Game Genie in 5th grade), to watch the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Predator. We also discuss another 1987 classic, Adventures in Babysitting (or, as you wacky Europeans know it, A Night on the Town). This is the first episode we recorded with our new microphone, so hopefully you can notice an auditory upgrade. However, it might not be too apparent as the three of us had to crowd around the one mic. Hopefully this podcast takes off so we can afford a totally rad multi-mic setup. This episode was also a beast to edit, since Jessica was drunk and Bob got progressively more hammered as the recording went on. Lots of drunken rambles, false-starts, and anecdotes, but it shaped up to be one of my favorite episodes. Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. This time we discuss two very iconic mid-'80s fantasy films that have a lot in common. They both bombed at the box office only to go on to become cult classics. They both star gorgeous "cold" brunettes. And they both are titled a single word that starts with the letter "L". I'm speaking, of course, of the 1986 Jim Henson directed Labyrinth and the 1985 Ridley Scott directed Legend.Other media we discuss in brief: The Dark Crystal [1982], Phenomena [1985], Seven Minutes in Heaven [1985] Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read our '80s-themed comic Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
In this week’s episode, our friend Caitlin joins us as we discuss two more films from 1986: the strange and whimsical horror fantasy Troll (pseudo-predecessor to the infamous “Best Worst Movie” Troll 2), and the Eddie Murphy action-adventure comedy The Golden Child.Other media we discuss in brief: Golden Boy [1995-1996], Ator l'invincibile [1982], Troll 2 [1990], Just One of the Guys [1985], Big Trouble in Little China [1986], Cobra [1986], Weird Science [1985] Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read our '80s-themed comic Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
Whoa! After waaaay too long of a break, we're back to weekly podcasting. We kick off our glorious return with this episode where we review two very different films from 1986: the bizarre high school gross-out comedy Class of Nuke 'Em High (Troma's second best movie), and the chick flick disguised as an action-adventure comedy, Crocodile Dundee. Other movies we discuss in brief: The Toxic Avenger [1984], Airplane! [1980], Robocop 2 [1990], Romancing the Stone [1984] Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read our '80s-themed comic Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com. We dedicate this episode to Matty (Australian Dude).
We thought we'd try something a little different this episode and cover three films, but in less depth than we typically do. We figure this would be a good way to feature things that we otherwise wouldn’t talk about since we'd be hard pressed to discuss them for an entire episode. Let us know if you prefer this format, or if you'd rather see us stick to one topic per episode. Currently, I foresee us doing a mix of both, but we'd like to hear your feedback. The three movies we discuss are all quite different, starting with the teen thriller The New Kids, then things shift from spooky to saccharine as we discuss The Care Bears Movie, and finally, we talk about the sex comedy that Johnny Depp is embarrassed to have starred in: Private Resort. Just about the only thing these three movies have in common is they were all released in 1985. Other movies we discuss in brief: Class of 1984 [1982], Zapped! [1982] Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
We have a mega-special double-length episode this week. Not only does it feature our first guest, the awesome Gregg Samsa, but it also features us discussing a movie that's incredibly important to me: Evil Dead 2. Of course, we also talk a lot about the original Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. We also discuss how horror movies in general evolved over the course of the '80s, and at the end of the episode, we tell the tale of how Gregg and the "vampire killer of Paris" are largely responsible for Jessica and I meeting. I also share a few anecdotes from my days as the singer of the horror-themed rock band The EverDead, including my very intimate encounter with a gay zombie. Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can check out Gregg's music here: https://soundcloud.com/greggorysamsa You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
We discuss the forgotten "Disney animated classic" from 1985, The Black Cauldron. Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
We feel that this is the episode where we hit our podcasting stride. Definitely the best one yet. We discuss Xtro, a bizarre 1982 British sci-fi horror movie made in the wake of E.T.'s mega success, in which we learn that some extraterrestrials aren't friendly. Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
Episode 3 is rad as hell. We discuss Police Story, a 1985 kung fu action comedy co-written, directed, and starring Jackie Chan. You should totally listen to it and learn all about our “Jackie Chan experience.” Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com.
We discuss the rather obscure 1985 teen movie Vision Quest. We also talk a bit about ‘80s teen movies in general. Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook. You can email us at 198666@satanninja.com, and you can read Satan Ninja 198X online at SatanNinja.com
That's right, we, the creators of Satan Ninja 198X (the raddest '80s-themed webcomic of all time), have jumped on board the podcast bandwagon. Or, actually, we're riding our skateboards while holding on to the back of the bandwagon, Marty McFly style, because that's way cooler than sitting in some fucking crowded bandwagon. For the past few years, Jessica and I have almost exclusively consumed media from the '80s (partially for our entertainment, and partially as research for our comic). After every movie or show that we watch, I read up on it and then we discuss it and give our ratings (out of five). So we figured we might as well turn those discussions into a short podcast (most episodes run about 30-40 minutes). The very first trial episode we recorded was actually after we saw the terrible 1984 Supergirl movie. However, we recorded it really late so Jessica was mega tired and it showed in the recording. We consider that episode zero, and instead of releasing it publicly, Jessica made it available to her patrons as a little bonus. For our first "official" episode, we discuss the awesomely terrible 1985 movie Death Wish 3. Intro and outro songs by Michael Cook.
