In this engaging episode, we delve into the complexities and nuances of the animated classic "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" The film, released in 1988, serves as a nostalgic cornerstone for many, yet evokes mixed reactions from viewers, as evidenced by our own divergent perspectives. JJ expresses a profound admiration for the film's unique blend of live-action and animation, its rich character portrayals, and the poignancy embedded within its comedic facade. Conversely, Alec articulates a distinct aversion to the film, citing a lack of nostalgic connection and a sense of anxiety it imparts rather than enjoyment. This discussion not only underscores our contrasting viewpoints but also invites listeners to reflect upon their own experiences with this cinematic landmark, exploring themes of nostalgia, humor, and the interplay between childhood memories and adult perceptions.Visit Our Sponsor: https://dubby.gg10% Off Code: OURVERDICTSupport us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Send us Fan MailWhat happens when you take cartoon chaos and drop it into a gritty detective story that actually works? Who Framed Roger Rabbit might be one of the boldest movie swings of the last 40 years, blending slapstick cartoon madness with a noir mystery in a way that still feels surprisingly smart. We head to Maroon Studios and Cloverleaf Studios to break down why this 1988 classic still feels like a technical achievement, even in a world packed with CGI.We talk about what makes the illusion so convincing, from the practical effects and real-world interactions to the tiny details like shadows, dust trails, and the way the camera treats animated characters like actual actors on a physical set. We also dive into the performances, especially Eddie Valiant's dry frustration playing perfectly against Roger's nonstop chaos. On top of that, we explore how Robert Zemeckis's direction and Alan Silvestri's score give the movie that classic old Hollywood feel while keeping the energy moving.Beyond the filmmaking, we get into the movie's cultural impact. Seeing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny share the screen feels like a once in a lifetime moment, and we talk about why something like that feels almost impossible today. We also explore the darker side of the film, from Judge Doom and the nightmare fuel of the dip to Eddie's alcoholism and the freeway conspiracy that feels way more relevant than you might expect. By the end, we're asking a bigger question: if you didn't grow up on Looney Tunes or classic Disney cartoons, does Who Framed Roger Rabbit still land the same in the streaming era?If you enjoyed the episode, subscribe, share it with a movie-loving friend, and leave us a five star review to help more people discover the show.Apologies, there is a static sound during some of Anthony's parts.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

This week on The Video Store Podcast, I am recommending four movies built around one of the simplest and most reliable science fiction ideas there is, shrinking people down. It is a strong trope because every one of these films understands that once a character gets small, nothing has to be exotic to feel dangerous. A bloodstream can look like deep space. A shopping cart can feel absurd and threatening at the same time. A backyard can turn into a full scale survival story. The fun of these movies is not just the effect itself, it is the way each one finds its own tone inside the same basic setup.Fantastic Voyage starts this set in an old-style studio style. Richard Fleischer directed it, Raquel Welch was still early in her career, and the movie ended up winning Academy Awards for art direction and special effects. Isaac Asimov wrote the novelization, which helped give the film an added layer of science fiction prestige even though the movie was not adapted from one of his earlier books. It is still one of those sixties films where the production design does a lot of the selling. You are watching people turn the inside of a human body into a full cinematic world, and they do it with real confidence. The Incredible Shrinking Woman takes the same basic concept and pushes it toward satire. Lily Tomlin is the main reason to see it, and she is surrounded by exactly the kind of bright, slightly unreal suburban world that makes the jokes work. Jane Wagner wrote it, Joel Schumacher directed it, and the movie has a cast that includes Charles Grodin and Ned Beatty. There is also a nice eighties detail in the score, since Suzanne Ciani handled the music, which gives the film one more thing separating it from the older version of this idea. It is not the most famous title in this group, but it feels very specific to its moment, especially in the way it folds consumer culture and household products into the premise.Innerspace may be the easiest recommendation here because it is so good at being funny, fast, and a little chaotic without losing track of the effects work. Joe Dante directed it, Dennis Quaid and Martin Short make a very good mismatch at the center, and the movie won the Academy Award for visual effects. This is one of those late eighties studio movies where the effects are both impressive and funny. It also has that Dante who has a habit of making a mainstream movie feel just a little off center. You can sense the touch of Industrial Light and Magic in the technical side, but it never turns into a dry demonstration reel.Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a joy to watch. Joe Johnston made his live action directing debut with it, Rick Moranis is exactly right for the inventor at the center, and Disney turned a backyard into a full adventure landscape. It was a major hit, and for a while it stood as Disney's highest grossing live action film. Part of what makes it hold up is that so much of it was built around practical effects, oversized sets, models, puppetry, and carefully staged perspective tricks. It also had Tummy Trouble attached in theaters, so for a lot of people there was a Roger Rabbit bonus built into the experience. That is a pretty good rental memory to have. What I like about putting these four recommendations is that they show how flexible a shrinking movie can be. One plays it as a polished sixties science fiction trip. One turns it into satire. One uses it for special effects comedy with a little manic energy. One makes it into a family adventure that a lot of people probably first met on cable or VHS. Same basic hook, very different results. That is usually a good sign you have a real movie trope and not just a gimmick. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. (Spoiler Section Length - 10min 1sec)Many films have combined live-action and 2D animation before, some of which we've even covered here, such as Bedknobs and Broomsticks. But most of those films have a scene or two where the combination happens, or maybe it happens throughout but with only one character, such as Pete's Dragon. Those that make an effort to combine the mediums all throughout their runtime are few, and those who manage to do it successfully are even fewer. Since its release Roger Rabbit has been considered the king among these films, and today we determine once and for all whether or not it deserves that crown.

GASP! We explore how Imagineering balances IP integration, ride systems, and immersive details to turn Goofy and Max's chaotic road trip into a fully realized, high-energy adventure that fits seamlessly into the land.Along the way, we dig into miniaturized motion-simulator vehicles, visual anchors for dynamic scenes, and how careful story design keeps guests on track even as cars spin and tilt. Send a textWhat if the smartest way to fix a ride isn't to rebuild it, but to tune what fans already love? We set ourselves a constraint-heavy challenge—no bulldozers, no new IP, just targeted upgrades that sharpen story, comfort, and interactivity—and the ideas started to fly.We kick off with a crisp Summer Jam from Shades of Green, then dive into headliner debates. Tiana's Bayou Adventure gets a character remix as Louis leads a gloriously off-beat band hunt that resolves into a splashdown crescendo. Radiator Springs Racers earns a kinetic upgrade with dirt-track drifting through high-speed corners. Roger Rabbit gets gamified with a “spinometer” and Benny's delightfully passive-aggressive driving tips. Over in Epcot, we modernize Mission: SPACE into a SpaceX-flavored mission console where your timing matters, alarms blare, and teamwork lands you safely—no more dummy buttons.Comfort and clarity drive big wins. Jungle Cruise flips to forward-facing seating and stronger audio so every punchline lands. Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom deserves Disneyland's silky track and roomier vehicles. Indiana Jones trades dated projections for crisp animatronics, cinematic lighting, and denser sets. Ratatouille's queue transforms from hallway to Parisian street theater, with sizzling kitchen aromas and scale gags that sell the shrink. Spaceship Earth gets audible narration and playful “thank the Phoenicians” tags to carry smiles between eras.We future-proof the playful, too. Autopia goes fully electric through a living Tomorrowland city, guided by AI cars that coach your driving and score smoothness. Buzz Lightyear's blasters finally aim true and reward accuracy, not spam. Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway leans meta with flickering “set” glitches, prop gaffes, and a Chuuby short that deepens the payoff. Expedition Everest multiplies the mayhem with curious baby yetis and a brief “off the rails” jolt that turns first rides into legend. These are small, surgical changes with oversized impact: better queues, cleaner audio, sharper thrills, and more reasons to ride again. If you love Disney parks and believe classic attractions can evolve without losing their soul, you'll have opinions. We want them. Subscribe, share with a fellow park nerd, and tell us the one small change you'd make first.

This week we finish out our LA neo-noir series with the revolutionary Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Robert Zemeckis directed this adaptation of Gary K. Wolf's 1981 novel, Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, a hilariously smart satire that leads hard-boiled private detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) on a journey to prove one of Toon Town's biggest stars, Roger Rabbit (voice of Charles Fleischer) is not guilty of murder. Together they must clear Roger's name and save him from the dreadful Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd). Nominated for 6 Academy Awards and winning 3, the film was an astonishing blend of live-action and animation, creating new technology along the way. It is also the only film to include characters from both Disney and Warner Bros. together onscreen. We're off next week, but we'll be back with some holiday cheer in December!

It's our fourth episode of the increasingly-inaccurately-titled Patreon Request "Month" 2025, and in the longest official episode of this podcast to date, the randomizer is going all the way back to 1988 to pick ArthurCrane's request for, quite simply, one of the greatest cinematic triumphs of all time, a tour-de-force of animation, live action and pre-CGI special effects wizardry, wrapped up in a still-relevant metaphorical fable about civil rights and gentrification set in an impossible fantasy world that combines a gritty film noir aesthetic with off-the-wall cartoon zaniness. Directed by future Oscar-winning blockbuster visionary Robert Zemeckis at the peak of his powers, with animation directed by often-underappreciated genius Richard Williams, and representing a Disney studio with new management eager to swing for the fences and conquer the world, this masterpiece was truly a once-in-a-lifetime perfect melding of artistry, ambition and anarchy. And granted, the whole project was blown out of the water just a few years later by the even greater achievement that was Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, but this movie was still pretty darn swell too.
