In a special interview, Will chats with Gary Goldman, the screenwriter of 1986's cult classic Big Trouble in Little China. The setting of Gary's original story was very different than what we saw onscreen. Is there a future for this tale of ancient Chinese mysticism set in the Old West?Over the last several decades, Gary has written, produced, and otherwise improved a number of successful Hollywood films, including Total Recall, Minority Report and Basic Instinct. He's worked for every major film studio and collaborated on projects with directors Steven Spielberg, Paul Verhoven, John Carpenter, James Cameron, and Ridley Scott.0:00 - Introduction0:55 - InterviewFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1980snow.Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@1980snow

The hosts discussed the film's characters, particularly James Hong's performance as Lopan, and analyzed key scenes including the supernatural battles and optical effects. They compared the film favorably to previous episodes' selections like "Rawhead Rex" and "Transmutations," concluding that "Big Trouble in Little China" was more entertaining and well-executed. The podcast included technical difficulties with Ryan's Blu-ray player and audio issues, but they managed to complete their thorough analysis of the film's narrative structure, special effects, and cultural significance. Clive Barker Podcast Discussion Ryan and José discussed their podcast episode focusing on Clive Barker's Contemporary Commentaries for 1986, where they selected Big Trouble in Little China for comparison with Barker's film. Film Location and Production Planning José and Ryan discussed filming locations, noting that costs and logistics led to filming at the Fox Backlot in LA instead of San Francisco. Send us Fan MailIn this Cinemondo review, we're breaking down ONE PIECE Season 2 Episode 4—and wow… the tension, the betrayals, the fights—this is the arc kicking into high gear. From the deeper Baroque Works conspiracy to major character moments that hit hard, this episode brings serious stakes while still delivering that signature One Piece humor and heart. And let's talk about those action sequences
A sweet, elderly gentleman, David Lo Pan (James Hong), simply wants a date. He has a reasonable kink, green eyes. People laugh at him. Can't a (evil sorcerer) romantic find happiness? Meanwhile, Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) hangs out with his friend Wang (Dennis Dun) for a long night of drinking and an early airport run. Wang loses his love. Jack also loses his love, his truck. So much trouble! Is this story more about Chinese mysticism and world ending consequences or an old man's attempt at love? RTS learns that there might not be an “off switch” on the Lo Pan lamp. It's a thing! Jeremy saddles up and rustles up a “firm” howdy to Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall). La-Mar samples the cuisine over at Uncle Chu's (Chao Li Chi). Positive reviews! Collin teams up with Egg Shen (Victor Wong) and uses five out of the six demons in the bag. You better watch out; he's got one left for you! Brent brews and serves some gourd juice. You will now become smoke and dream. It will get, um, interesting. Check out this amazing John Carpenter flick! You need to remember that “you were not brought upon this world to ‘get it'” and listen to the Porkchop Express. Green flames!

Have ya paid your dues, Jack? Yessir, the check is in the mail. It must be Conflict-in-Asian-Enclave Week this week, as Andy joins us in checking out a couple of well paired and much loved cult classics: Big Trouble in Little China (1986), directed by the great John Carpenter, and Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991), directed by Mark L. Fair warning: we go into the plots of both films in some detail, including the endings, but we feel like these movies are somewhat unspoilable, so we won't be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for either of them. Few films have experienced reputational turnaronds like John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. Now a beloved classic, it was equally ignored by critics and audiences upon its release in 1986. Send a textA truck driver who can't stop asking questions, a friend who does the real fighting, and a sorcerer who waited 2,000 years for green eyes—there's a reason Big Trouble in Little China refuses to fade. We dive straight into why this cult classic still sparks debate: the self-aware camp, the electric synths, the rain-soaked neon, and the audacity of casting a swaggering, lovable bumbler as your poster hero.We break down Kurt Russell's Jack Burton as a brilliant misdirect—loud, lost, but weirdly brave—while Wang carries the narrative weight and the martial arts grace. That inversion lets John Carpenter poke holes in the American hero myth without losing the popcorn thrills. From practical monsters and the iconic knife throw to uneven but ambitious fight staging, we pull apart the craft that makes the movie sing. And yes, we talk about the moments that age poorly—forced flirtations, accented English used among Chinese characters—and how the satire lands alongside the stereotypes.Carpenter's fingerprints are everywhere: the synth-driven score that snaps scenes into focus, the pulpy color palette that turns Chinatown into a fever dream, and the long partnership with Russell that keeps risk-taking fun. We trace cultural ripples into 90s pop culture, Mortal Kombat parallels, and why this film bombed before becoming midnight-movie royalty. Two of us call it pure five-star joy; one of us gives it a thoughtful seven, intrigued enough to chase The Thing next. Whether you rewatch for the set design, the one-liners, or that thunder-lit ceiling shot, there's big charm in this little slice of cinematic chaos.Hit play, ride with the Pork Chop Express, and tell us: is Jack Burton a hero, a decoy, or the perfect mix of both? This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome newcomer Herbie to the show to discuss the 1986 adventure comedy Big Trouble in Little China. Once again we dive into the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell pool for some mid 80s fun. This movie mixes all the adventure of Raiders and all the wire fu of a good martial arts movie to meld into something else entirely. The hunt is on to find a woman with green eyes, which, as it turns out, encompasses half the females in the cast (although colored contacts were needed for both) and Kurt Russell is at his all time beefiness with his iconic tank top. Come along for this wild ride and enjoy the podcast.Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). Look for these signs: are your boys wearing red bandannas? Are certain words sneaking into their vocabulary? Words like “the first sovereign emperor” and “Ching Dai, god of the East”? Are they hanging around with the Three Storms and stealing trucks from Jack Burton?Well if so, my friends . . . Yup, we've got “Big Trouble in Little China this week in our “Cuz I Wanna (And You're Gonna Like It)” series, a John Carpenter film that didn't do so hot at the box office but found new life on home video. Does it squander that new life? How well does this forty-year-old movie about martial arts, Chinese mysticism, and Kurt Russell channeling John Wayne hold up? Give a listen . . . or this will really piss us off to no end!Poll question: what's your favorite movie that was ignored at the box office but found new life in some other form (home video, midnight shows)?
