June 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Jim Henson cult classic Labyrinth, and the team decided that it was a perfect opportunity to take a look back at this beloved example of dark fantasy. We're also taking it as an excuse to compare and contrast the state of children's media then and now, and to that end, Tim is joined by Cameron and Mandy, our two main experts on child development, and in Cameron's case, '80s movies. Before turning to Labyrinth, Mandy brings the recent buzzy film Obsession to our movie roundtable, while Cameron brings the recent buzzy film The Sheep Detectives. By request of Patreon supporter David G, Tim is looking at a pair of Canadian animated short films by Ryan Larkin, Walking (1968) and Street Musique (1972), which are neither recent nor buzzy, but are both quite amazing studies of movement and music.

The feds are investigating, and now state leaders have their focus on Atlanta's transit system; A massive data center that already got the green light has Marietta residents planning to crash this week's city council meeting; and America at 250: how the Jim Henson puppet Miss Piggy helps tell the nation's story through an Atlanta lens. Disney, The Muppets, and Jim Henson Disney just closed the Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios to make way for Monstropolis. But while Muppet Vision 3D, Jim Henson's Last Muppet project, is gone, the Muppets aren't leaving Hollywood Studios; they've moved into the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Is this a promotion or a demotion? To understand what's happening today, we have to look back to the deal that almost happened in 1989. In this episode, we explore the history and connection between Jim Henson, George Lucas, and Michael Eisner. We dive into the the handshake between Eisner and Henson that almost changed Disney forever, the tragic timing of Jim Henson's final project, and why it took Disney 14 years to finally close the deal. In this video, we look at: The commonalities between Jim Henson and Walt Disney. The George Lucas bridge that brought Jim Henson to Imagineering. The "Muppet Babies" connection to Marvel and Star Wars. The "Great Muppet Movie Ride" was planned but never built. Why the 1990 TV Special "The Muppets at Walt Disney World" was a bittersweet turning point. The future of the Muppets in film and in the Disney Parks. Matt and Jordan review Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, a straight-to-streaming title they are branding "movie Toferky." For Rec Seg, the duo finds comfort in the Paramount Plus vaults, with Jordan revisiting the Tom Clancy masterpiece that started it all, and Matt countering with a series sequel featuring Harrison Ford's bookworm Boy Scout desk-jockey. Then, a personalized recommendation request from listener Patrick sparks a highly volatile intra-pod war. While Jordan goes with a ‘70s screwball classic, Matt goes full "Muppet Radical" with his recommendation for a late-period Muppet movie over the Jim Henson-produced originals. Finally, Producer Sam hosts a trivia game called The Sum of All Jack Ryans, which ignites a flurry of deep pulls, culminating with a classic Jordan anecdote featuring Star Trek's Gates McFadden desperately trying to escape a cruise ship at the outbreak of the pandemic. Brim, Kim and Mr. Greer are back at it again. Apart from all the usual shenanigans, the gang chats about everything in pop culture with all the trimmings including the upcoming Stan Lee Presents project, Hell Michigan is for sale and Brimstone wants to own it, and why zombies are b!tches. They discuss the baby birds and bunnies, the Disney guest who jumped off the Kilimanjaro Safari to take a leak, and the one-hit-wonder Aqua broke up. The crew also chats about Billy Joel condemning the biopic about him, Jim Henson's Creature Shop now being open to the public, and how AEW giving fans extra bang for their buck inadvertently left hundreds stranded in Queens. The cast talks about lots of sporty things with Mr. Greer, and the guy who has been doing ‘play by play' of Knicks games for his sister who'd been in a bad accident. They talk about Baja Blast dogs and mutant pigs, the He-Man movie, Jared Leto's shortcomings, and the Pizza Planet pop-ups coming for Toy Story 5. You remind me of the babe! This week on 3 Guys and a Flick, we enter Jim Henson's strange, musical, puppet-filled fantasy world as we review the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. This episode takes us through Sarah's journey to rescue baby Toby from David Bowie's mesmerizing Goblin King, Jareth. Along the way, we talk Bowie's unforgettable presence, Jennifer Connelly's early performance, Henson's ambitious puppetry, the movie's darker coming-of-age themes, the soundtrack, the creepy factor, the Bog of Eternal Stench, and whether nostalgia does a lot of heavy lifting for this beloved fantasy film. Is Labyrinth a magical cult classic, an awkward 80s fever dream, or a technically impressive movie trapped somewhere between kids' film and adult fantasy? Grab your crystal balls, watch out for helping hands, and join us as we review the good, the bad, and the absurd.

Answer our 2026 Audience Census! "I wasn't an Imagineer because of the dollar. It's because I wanted to do something marvelous for people to enjoy." Captain Eo. Ghostbusters. Men in Black. Team America. Star Tours. The Muppet Movie. If you've ever fallen in love with puppeted characters that felt impossibly alive, there's a good chance Terri Hardin worked on them. A master puppeteer, creature builder, and performer, Terri has spent decades blurring the line between imagination and reality, helping bring some of the most iconic characters in film, television, and the Disney Parks to life. Thanks to the success and beloved characters of Jim Henson, puppets and fantastical characters were having a huge moment in the 80s and 90s. Studios depended on practical effects and humans to create and bring to life characters such as Stay Puft, the giant Marshmallow Man and Zuul, the Temple Dog in Ghostbusters, both of which Terri helped animate. Terri has such an impressive list of productions she's worked on that her bio below is a 22 page document full of references to beloved films and characters. We've also linked to some videos of her work below in the Resources section. Terri also worked as a sculptor and Imagineer at Walt Disney for many years. She is brimming with incredible stories about all the people she's worked with including Michael Jackson, Dan Aykroyd and Jim Henson, and Michael Eisner. Terri talks to us about how she prepared herself so that when any opportunity came, she was ready. I especially loved her story about how she created the Dragon's Lair attraction at Disneyland Paris. Terri is an absolutely remarkable character herself, and she had both me and David laughing through the entire interview. Beneath it all, Terry is a passionate artist who breathes life into all her creations. Whether you're a film buff, a Disney fan, a maker, or just someone who loves a good behind-the-scenes story, this conversation pulls back the curtain on puppetry as a craft. You'll never look at puppetry the same way again. The Michael Jackson biopic has hit the big screen — Dori wants scandal, Paulo just wants to know who plays Bubbles. One thing we must know by now is that when you say Michael Jackson's name three times in a row, you'll summon impersonator extraordinaire Corey Feldman — with his trusty sheer shirt allowing the world to see his disappointingly tiny nipples. That's not the only thing he has in common with Paulo — they both share the middle-aged problem of no longer being able to dance. We also discover that Little Golden Books have been publishing biographies about some of our favourite 80s-ites. We get that Jim Henson might be interesting for kids as the father of the Muppets, but what child has ever wanted a bed time story about Bruce Springsteen?Paulo reviews one of the most angsty movies of the 80s, Dori reminds us that no matter what you do, Madonna did it first, and “Two 80s Truths and a Lie” tugs at the Hulkster's heartstrings.Jump To:Michael Jackson Biopic "Michael" (00:02:12): https://www.eonline.com/news/1431238/michael-jackson-movie-controversy-what-paris-jackson-more-family-has-said?utm_source=chatgpt.comCorey Feldman's Michael Jackson Impersonation (00:09:18): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bWF4Tm_3SQLittle Golden Book Biographies (00:20:58): https://littlegoldenbooks.com/biographiesEddie and the Cruisers (00:27:29): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nXj8RkP7xQMadonna at Coachella (00:39:15): https://www.tiktok.com/@bitajoon26/video/7630563583402773791?_r=1&_t=ZS-95wUDLOe7KjTwo 80s Truths and a Lie: Hulk Hogan Edition (00:48:39)Hulkster in Heaven: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIoUkoaYPj8Pastmania: https://web.facebook.com/share/p/1JU1JZAGtV/#80s pop culture, #That 80s Show, #Michael Jackson biopic, #Corey Feldman, #Alien Ant Farm, #nostalgia, #early email services, #Hotmail, #Yahoo, #music biopics, #Bohemian Rhapsody, #Rocketman, #streaming music, #Michael Jackson music surge, #Shazam searches, #Little Golden Books biographies, #Prince, #Willie Nelson, # Betty White, # Jim Hensons, # Bruce Springsteen, #Eddie and the Cruisers, #Madonna Coachella performance, #Sabrin Carpenter, #Hulk Hogan documentary, #80s music, #celebrities, #80s movies, #pop culture discussions, #TikTok trends, #music resurgence, #iconic performances, #80s icons, #childhood memories, #entertainment news, #celebrity gossip.
Step inside the Goblin King's maze with this special live episode of Cinebuds! Recorded at the historic Oriental Theatre during the 2026 Milwaukee Film Festival, this episode celebrates the 40th anniversary (and 4K restoration) of the fantasy classic, Labyrinth. For this very special occasion, Dori and Kpolly enlisted some help from Steve Horton, Eisner-winning author of the graphic novel Bowie: Stardust, Ray Guns, and Moonage Daydreams. He shares a few fascinating insider stories about Labyrinth from his research, including how Bowie would use a puppet off-camera to charm baby Toby into staying calm during filming. The trio also dive into: Why Bowie was the perfect Jareth (and which other '80s icons almost got the part). A tribute to Jim Henson's timeless practical effects and the lovable "gentle giant," Ludo. Hilarious behind-the-scenes secrets, from the infamous "codpiece" to Jennifer Connelly's real reaction to the Bog of Eternal Stench. And it wouldn't be a live event without getting the audience involved, including a few brave souls who offer their questions and "hot takes."#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

Jes Battis' new book, It's Only Forever. Labyrinth (ECW Press, 2026) is a wild, intimate, and political deep dive into Jim Henson's 1986 classic starring David Bowie and its cast of lovable, gender-defying goblins. In the 40 years since Labyrinth's release, Jim Henson's cult classic starring a menagerie of goblin puppets, the conversation about it has only grown louder. Fans are still holding viewing parties and masquerade balls, and creating memes inspired by David Bowie's sardonic and sexy goblin king, numerous Etsy crafts, and even a Japanese video game. But what makes the film so enduring, beyond its technical mastery and clever script, is how it presents childhood as something dangerous, heroic, and even queer. It's Only Forever explores Labyrinth as an '80s time capsule that both reflects and challenges its era, offering its young audience an alternative to conservatism and soulless economics, at a time when U.S. president Ronald Reagan ignored the HIV/AIDS crisis, pushing queerness further into the shadows. As Sarah, played by a teenaged Jennifer Connelly, faces down the king and his destructive whims, she exclaims, “You have no power over me,” and in that moment she is everyone who has ever felt marginalized, who has instead turned to the goblins over social and political toxicity every single time. From the costuming to the twisting plot, this classic example of 1980s fantasy shows us that the magic and comfort of childhood never need to be discarded as we are forced to enter a world that may very well seek to destroy us. Instead, Labyrinth reveals a universal and beautiful truth: that our strength comes from what we have always known ourselves to be — beastly, loving, and wildly joyful. David Bowie stole a baby and we're here to talk about it. This week on Be Kind Rewind, Dave, Cody, & film professor Paul Walcher revisit Jim Henson's Labyrinth (1986), the cult classic that bombed at the box office, broke its creator's heart, and then became one of the most beloved fantasy films of a generation. We dig into what holds up (the puppetry is better than ever, Bowie is magnetic, that soundtrack still slaps), what doesn't (the story can't decide if it's a fairy tale, a space opera, or a dungeon crawler), and the surprisingly deep spiritual allegory hiding behind the glitter and goblins. Bonus: the guys break down the Taylor Frankie Paul saga and play the Movie Game.

When Puppets Get Grotesque: The Dark Crystal and the Gateway to Nightmare FuelKrissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell sit down with special guest Eric Weir—a tattoo artist and lifelong Jim Henson devotee—to tackle The Dark Crystal (1982), the film that proved Muppets could die on screen and parents could regret their viewing choices. One host comes in fresh with zero childhood nostalgia, while the other two grapple with how a movie this dark and grungy holds up against the comfort of Labyrinth. What Fuels the ConversationThe tension here isn't about plot—it's about whether The Dark Crystal still works when you strip away the rose-colored glasses or, conversely, whether it even lands if you never wore them. Eric makes a case for the film as a top-ten masterpiece, Nathan admits a soft spot despite rotating it out of the lineup, and Krissy finds herself surprised by how much she enjoyed a movie that seemed designed to keep her away as a kid. The trio wrestles with Jim Henson's ambition to make something intentionally less cuddly, the grotesque beauty of the Skeksis (each hideous in its own special way), and whether the absence of songs was a missed opportunity or a bold choice. They also dig into the puppet mechanics, the nightmare-fuel death scenes, and how this film became a visual gateway drug for darker fantasy. Why You'll Want to ListenThis one's warm, weird, and genuinely curious—spoiler-light enough to stay at the premise level, but rich with debate over nostalgia, artistry, and what happens when you ask Muppets to walk like humans. Whether you're Team Labyrinth or Team Dark Crystal, there's plenty here to chew on.LinksTruStory FMMembership (early, ad-free access + bonus content): JoinSocials: Facebook | Instagram | BlueskyLearn more about the hosts: Neighborhood Comedy Theatre | Squishy StudiosIf you could only show one Jim Henson project to someone who'd never seen his work, would you pick the cute and cuddly or the dark and crumbling—and why? ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member.

"Another world, another time, in the age of wonder." We watched "The Dark Crystal," directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, and that "other time" was back when they made movies for kids creepy as all get out. They really don't make 'em like they used to, and this movie is proof. The eerie Skeksis still haunt our dreams, the bohemian Mystics are living out our hippie desert dwelling fantasies, and the ethereal Gelflings are giving us fashion inspo for days. Henson and Oz stretched the limits of puppetry on film and created an entire handmade world without a human to be seen. The art of illustrator Brian Froud and his fantasy creatures is on full display, and The Dark Crystal transports us to a fantastic place that exists only in our memories— the 1980s. This year is the 40th anniversary of Jim Henson's beloved cult classic film Labyrinth, and author Jes Battis is on the podcast to discuss their new book on the film: It's Only Forever: Labyrinth (available April 7, 2026). Starring Jennifer Connelly, David Bowie, and a slew of goblins and goodies from Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the film is a storybook fantasy that transcended its original box office failure to become a fan favorite. It's Only Forever is both an analytical and personal text, and Battis discusses the book's reading of the film as a queer narrative released in a time of '80s macho orthodoxy. Hosted and produced by Justin Remer. Recorded remotely via Zencastr. If you like podcasts, maybe you enjoy audiobooks too. Please check out the Skylight Books Podcast playlist of audiobooks featured in our recent Skylit author interviews, on Libro.fm. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental)" by Duck the Piano Wire. This week we're losing ourselves again in the delightful maze of 80s fantasy, with Jim Henson's extraordinary Labyrinth (which, like our very own Rob, turns 40 this year...)Think of it less like a museum of childhood traumas, and more like a fun adventure with cool puppets and a brilliant - nay, magical - dance number. Now if we only figure out how to get inside…Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Pilot Month 2026 rolls on with this Jim Henson entry, which aired during the 1987 installment of CBS Summer Playhouse. Like at least one other pilot we have previously covered, this pilot dealt with the happenings at a children's TV show, as well as the personal lives off-camera. Like at least that one other pilot, it became a footnote in TV history.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Majora's Mask. We finally get into a dungeon and also talk more about tone, weirdnesses in the save system, and other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Past the Swamp Dungeon Issues covered: the horror of becoming a deku, the Lynchian lens, production realities and narrative, liminal spaces, archetypes, Nordic or Tolkienesque influences, turning down the audio, thinking about other Zeldas, being exposed to something edgy as a youngster, parenting influences, being unclear about how one beat a boss, not teaching the player, feeling punished, overindexing on character, trying not to blame the player, feeling the time pressure, layering gameplay on the world, the strange ways the faeries are hidden, discussing what persists, the notebook and the perfect day, being weird that you can leave and not knowing the rules, having to make a 60 hour game, revisiting the save owls, fast traveling (and a little diversion into game history). Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: American Werewolf in London, Twin Peaks/David Lynch, Drew, Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss, God of War: Ragnarok, Lord of the Rings, Stephen King, CalamityNolan, Outer Wilds, Groundhog Day, Death Loop, Deadly Premonition, Ultima (series), Dragon Quest (series), Hitman, Dwarf Fortress, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay spent the evening playing pool and arcade video games at the Foot Lair before jumping on to talk "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Andy kicks the episode off by talking about the delicious pizza in the movie, and how it reminded him of the time he was physically tossed out of a $1 slice joint in New York. Then the fellas try to make sense out of one of the most befuddling kids movies that for over a decade was the most successful indie movie of all-time. On paper, none of it should work, but thanks in large part to the genius design of Jim Henson's last effort in film, the ridiculously cool costumes brought the comic book-turned-cartoon to life. Pairing the turtle designs with Hong Kong's legendary Golden Harvest production team brought top tier martial arts to the big screen with a grimy rain soaked late '80s New York as the backdrop. Not only did Raph and the gang look lifelike, but they faced off against one of the coolest looking villains ever with Shredder's incredible design. Toss in Degen Cinema royalty, Elias Koteas, as the bulky Casey Jones, and you have an undeniable children's classic that has six year olds, and grown degens shouting T-U-R-T-L-E POWER.
This week, we turn once more to the wonderful world of media as we consider ten films for Changeling: the Lost inspiration. We did this previously with Changeling: the Dreaming (check out episode 50!), so it seemed like the right time to pull a similar for the other fae game. There are a couple crossover titles whose themes and plots and aesthetics work equally well in both, in our opinion... but otherwise, this list has a slightly eerier, horror-inflected vibe overall, we suppose? We've tried to keep the discussion as spoiler-light as possible, but for your edification, here are the deets and some trailers for the films we discuss in this order: Alice (Něco z Alenky) (dir. We also briefly discuss how well we are able to separate the art from the artist. So please join us. But remember…don't let us see you're afraid.
This week, your favorite former puppeteers blast off into the strange, slimy, and spectacular universe of Farscape—the cult sci-fi show that boldly asked the question: what if space opera had more puppets… and weirder ones?Created by Rockne S. O'Bannon and brought gloriously to life by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Farscape filled its galaxy with unforgettable alien characters—like the towering warrior "definitely-not-a-Klingon" Ka D'Argo and the delightfully grumpy Dominar puppet Rygel XVI.We dive into how the show fused ambitious science fiction storytelling with jaw-dropping creature work, why Rygel might be the most expensive fart joke in television history, and what it's like to act opposite a co-star who's operated by five puppeteers and a small miracle. Along the way, we celebrate the show's fearless weirdness and the way it pushed puppetry far beyond children's television and into the outer limits of adult sci-fi.It's tentacles, tyrants, and top-tier animatronics—a reminder that sometimes the most alien thing in the galaxy… is sculpted foam latex.Send a textJoin the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro https://www.taetro.com/

Tahra Zafar is a costume and creature effects designer. She designed the Paddington Bear puppet featured in the hit West End production Paddington: The Musical.Born into a theatre family, she grew up with an Armenian American father who worked as a choreographer in the first West End production of West Side Story, and a mother who moved from a career as a ballerina to theatre work around the world. Her interest in making began early, helping her father with practical projects such as restoring their house, even learning to build walls and spending her spare time model making, with Airfix creations suspended from her bedroom ceiling. After studying theatre design at Central Saint Martins, she began her career making theatre costumes. She spent some time at the Jim Henson creature workshop where she made some of the creatures for the first Harry Potter film including Hedwig the owl and Scabbers the rat. After her daughter was born, Tahra worked on some of the characters for In the Night Garden with her daughter, a willing judge of what worked for toddlers. In 2012, Tahra was in charge of 23,000 costumes for the London 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.
