A nerd, a jock, a princess, a werewolf, and a gender-swapping journalist walk into 1985… This week, Jovial Jay and Shua take a nostalgic trip back to high school to celebrate the teen comedies that defined a generation on Enjoy Stuff Whether you were eating lunch in the library, building your dream girl, or skiing the K12, teen comedies in 1985 tapped into real adolescent emotions with totally tubular exaggeration. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Teen Movies! 1985 was a banner year for teen comedies, giving us characters we loved, related to, and sometimes cringed at. These movies didn't just entertain, they helped define Generation X adolescence. Why did these films resonate so much? Because the '80s were overflowing with disposable teen cash, hungry studios, and an army of rising stars like Michael J. Fox, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, and more. They gave us escapism, identity, and some truly quotable lines. Did one of these movies speak to you? Did you own the soundtrack? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Two Dollars!” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. John Hughes famously wrote the script for Weird Science in only two days, but it's likely that he was carrying around this particular fantasy in his head for at least a couple of decades. How else do you characterize a story about horny adolescents who create the perfect woman in their bedroom? Granted, most raunchy ‘80s teen comedies don't escalate the stakes into absurdity in the same way that Weird Science does, with nuclear missiles and mutant bikers spicing up the third act. So listen below - or find us on your podrelayer of choice - as Adam and Aidan take this one apart and reassemble it, Frankenstein-style, on the slab of their minds. Their mindslab. You know.

What if Anthony Michael Hall wasn't the face of 1980s teen angst? What if instead of starring in The Breakfast Club, he was flipping omelets at a diner or selling insurance in suburban Chicago? This week on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito, we dive into the alternate reality of one of the most recognizable faces from John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age films. Anthony Michael Hall — the original “geek” who made awkward cool — joins Jeff to talk about what could have been if Hollywood hadn’t come calling. Hall shot to fame with a string of unforgettable roles in Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club, becoming the go-to actor for every lovable outsider in 80s cinema. But he wasn’t just a teen dream. He broke molds again by becoming the youngest cast member ever on Saturday Night Live at just 17 years old — a bold move that showed his comedic range and fearless ambition. Over the years, Hall has shed the high school persona and proven his versatility in serious roles — from the gritty The Dead Zone to portraying Whitey Ford in 61 and even embodying a cold-hearted villain in The Dark Knight. But despite the evolution, one question remains: What job would Anthony Michael Hall be doing today if he never got that lucky break? Many stars have walked a thin line between fame and flipping burgers. Remember Kanye West’s stint at The Gap? Or Brad Pitt sweating it out in a chicken suit for El Pollo Loco? Hall might’ve ended up a music producer, a writer, or even a motivational speaker — but one thing’s for sure: he never saw himself as just a jobber.

“So, what do you little maniacs want to do first?” As embodied by Kelly LeBrock, Lisa was full of questions, answers, and (for unknown reasons) a variety of witchy powers in the 1985 classic, Weird Science. Written and directed by John Hughes, the movie was a perverted teenage geek's dream: building a woman to spec, controlling her, and using her to gain popularity among the cool kids. But now, nearly 40 years later, what in the name of Gloria Steinem is going on here? Is there any joy to be had in this Anthony Michael Hall of horrors? And just how convincing is Robert Downey Jr as a bully? The Old Roommates float an air biscuit and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Join them before their parents get home.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. News of note from Tinsel Town and beyond. AI can tell you what your dog is thinking but also will make stuff up. So, don't believe your dog when he says your brother has been visiting your wife and playing the tickling game every Tuesday and Wednesday starting 10 minutes after you leave for work... that's just AI hallucinating.
Send us a textThis scientific romp was part of the ultimate trio released in August 1985. Real Genius, Weird Science, and My Science Project were released within one week of each other and just one month after Back to the Future. With Martha Coolidge at the helm, this movie spared the usual sophomoric fare we all love the '80s for. I love those sentence-ending prepositions. I ain't know much, but I know what I like. And I likes me some Val Kilmer. With no pandering to the usual bully/nerd tropes, this movie was rewritten and executed in a way that reveres the nerds and underdogs, full stop.

While not the first, but perhaps the most memorable to highlight the life of teenagers, John Hughes made some of the most influential films of the 1980s. Two of those films, Weird Science (1985) and The Breakfast Club (1985) both dealt with teens finding out who they truly are and how to navigate adolescent life. Lets us know if these films stuck with you and if you identified with any of the characters. Also Play:Cinema Chain Game--------------------------------------------Subscribe, rate, and review:Apple Podcasts: Our Film FathersSpotify: Our Film FathersYouTube: Our Film Fathers---------------------------------------------Follow Us:Instagram: @ourfilmfathersTwitter / X: @ourfilmfathersEmail: ourfilmfathers@gmail.com

Description: In the summer of 2020, as Jen was beginning to process the loss of her 26-year marriage, there was one person walking her own similar but different journey, and understood many of the feelings of anger, grief, shame, and loss that Jen was just beginning to feel. Someone who knew how that disappointment felt. Jessica N. Tuner, founder of the popular lifestyle blog The Mom Creative, was a few months ahead of Jen in processing the loss of her 16-year marriage to her husband and father of her three children. Today, Jessica shared with Jen and Amy what the road to recovery has looked like for her, including grieving the end of the life she thought she would have forever, the change of her identity, navigating the messy false-starts, and clawing her way back from what felt like “the floor of hell”. Jessica compiled those hard-fought lessons into a book she's hoping will be a manifesto of hope to others, called I Thought It Would Be Better Than This: Rise From Disappointment, Regain Control, and Rebuild a Life You Love. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: Nothing about what I thought my life was going to be, is my life now. Now I feel like I walk around in the world and I feel grief and loss and disappointment and dismay from everybody. It's amazing how my eyes have opened. It was a big awakening to the loss people are living with everyday.–Jessica N. Turner When we made the decision to divorce, I felt like I was sitting on the floor of hell, everything was dust, everything was different.–Jessica N. Turner No matter how devastating the loss, the life you can still rebuild is astonishing. – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Say Anything film (1989) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098258/ Sixteen Candles film (1984) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088128/ Cameron Crowe - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001081/ John Hughes - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000455/ James Spader - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000652/ Some Kind of Wonderful film (1987) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094006/ I Go Crazy by Flesh for Lulu - https://open.spotify.com/track/2o1AevEuv39qZAVy6k2pmn The Breakfast Club film (1985) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088847/ Weird Science film (1985) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090305 Ferris Bueller's Day Off film (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091042/ Planes, Trains and Automobiles film (1987) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093748/ Uncle Buck film (1989) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098554 Pretty in Pink film (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091790 Beethoven film (1992) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103786 I Thought It Would Be Better Than This: Rise From Disappointment, Regain Control, and Rebuild a Life You Love by Jessica Turner - https://amzn.to/40yC1fF Outlander - https://www.starz.com/us/en/series/outlander/21796 Onsite - https://experienceonsite.com/ ONSITE COURSE [BOOK ORDER BONUS]: What now?
