Isn't it so annoying when people tease you with something they can't tell you about? Tom Brady is regretting his Roast, but one thing we can all agree on is that Nikki Glaser crushed it. If Vinnie starts to cry, Sarah will draw the line on making fun of him. Jackie Chan is still doing his own stunts at age 71, Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas are fighting, and a woman sues her company after being compared to Darth Vader. Jackie Chan says “Ding Ding” on set to remind his crew: stay sharp, keep moving, no dead time. I've been thinking… maybe life needs more of that energy too. Less waiting, more intention. Urgency, not the panic kind, but the alive kind. The kind that reminds you you're here to do something. Ding ding, let's go.
Our very first Jackie Chan movie is the second entry in his most beloved Hong Kong action series. Police Story 2 is often described as the least of the original trilogy. Is that actually true? Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. Parkour pioneer Sébastien Foucan can be credited for bringing Parkour to the masses. His seminal UK documentary, 'Jump London' (2003) - and its follow up, 'Jump Britain' (2005) - sparked a cultural phenomenon which would see youngsters take to the streets in wild, acrobatic, hair-raising abandon; running, climbing and leaping across their urban environment in scenes we still see on our streets today. For Sébastien, a movie career followed, with stand-out roles in action films including 'Casino Royale' (2006) and 'The Tournament' (2009). Those perceptive enough to see the inspiration behind his incredible physical abilities and derring-do would be quick to reference the work of Jackie Chan, whose stunt-filled films would prove to be one of the early catalysts for Sébastien and his friends to take to the streets of Paris, recreating what they saw in his movies. Today, Sébastien is an inspirational speaker and CEO of the Foucan Academy, teaching kids the art of movement and self-expression. His motto: "we play".On this episode - recorded live at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre in Canterbury as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season - Sébastien explores his love of Hong Kong action cinema (especially the films of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee), his experiences working in Hollywood, current attitudes towards Parkour, and much more. This conversation was recorded after a screening of the 1978 Jackie Chan classic, 'Drunken Master', and is co-hosted by the 'Life of Action' author - and friend of the show - Mike Fury. Jackie Chan is back in Hollywood (against his better judgment) and is joining a cavalcade of stars including Burt Reynolds, Dom Deluise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilu Henner, Shirley MaClaine and MANY MORE - including ol' blue eyes himself Frank Sinatra - in the cross-country race (?) comedy (?) CANNONBALL RUN II which brings back all the things you know and love(?) about the first film, and.. well, that's just about it. It's pretty much the same thing. Except there's an orangutan this time, and Jackie has been teamed up with Richard Kiel just to make sure we all know he's extra small and (once again) bafflingly Japanese. Listen to Liam's blood pressure rise in REAL TIME as he describes his time with the film. ENJOY! The post Episode 270 – We Do Our Own Stunts – Cannonball Run II (1984) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

This week, we sit down with our good friend Chris Caccese to talk about the fine line between perfectionism and madness. We dive into drifting and how it's the one place where all the anxiety seems to disappears. Executing a fight scene requires a lot of attention to detail, but spending time to get the right fight choreographer and stunt doubles to execute their vision can make for a rewarding watch. In the case of stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski, his directorial debut John Wick helped spark a franchise that moviegoers love due to its well-choreographed action. Although the series has become a common example of great fighting, there’s a whole host of other examples that date back decades. Hong Kong action cinema has given so much to the action genre, having helped popularize high-speed martial arts fighting for international audiences; through this style of filmmaking, audiences were introduced to filmmaker John Woo and actor Jackie Chan. Joining us to share their extensive knowledge of fight scenes are Tim Cogshell and Andy Klein. What do you get when you combine Jackie Chan, John Cena, Euron Greyjoy, six Chinese production companies, AND the 2013 winner of the China division championship of the Miss Bikini of the Universe pageant? Why 2023's Hidden Strike, of course! Dragon Luo (Chan) is the legendary leader of a private security company tasked with rescuing the kidnapped Chinese workers of an oil refinery in Iraq. For whatever reason his estranged daughter Luo Mei (Ma Chunrui) is also there, but she hates him because, like Gunner, he was busy being cool in some far off conflict zone instead of bonding with her after her mother's death. Meanwhile, ex-special forces soldier Chris Van Horne (Cena) is just kind of hanging around a Middle Eastern village entertaining children and feeling kinda bad about American military adventurism abroad. In an attempt to get water or something for the village, he teams up with some terrorists/mercenaries in this plot to kidnap the refinery workers. After 40 solid minutes of deadly serious action intrigue and ripoffs of Mad Max: Fury Road set pieces, Cena and Chan finally meet up and remember that they're both funny. The film shifts wildly into an action buddy comedy and stays that way. We liked the second half way more than the first. Plus there are bloops at the end!

Zo is in the famed Chinatown area of Los Angeles enjoying the sights, the sounds and, as it turns out, a bunch of commotion. Zo loves a good martial arts bout just like everyone else, but does a kung fu fight have to break out at the Chinese restaurant where he's at trying to enjoy egg fu young? It seems as though a well dressed Chinese man and a tall, lanky, goofy looking African American are in a full-on Hong Kong film fight with a bunch of unruly Chinese gangsters. At some point the tall goofy one, who's been talking non-stop during the fight, screams out "LAPD!," so these are supposed to be the cops? Instead of law and order they're causing an unacceptable amount of chaos smashing dishes, overturning tables and generally upsetting customers.
