The Innovator's Matrix

Today on Ready for Change? Mike Jarmus interviews Joe Kim, the Vice-President of Innovation and the Chief Question Asker for Glory Global Solutions. Joe’s responsibilities at Glory include managing the long-term innovation pipeline, promoting a culture of innovation within the company, and aligning Glory’s innovation efforts globally. In this episode, Joe likens the world of innovation to the movie The Matrix, and explains what the Innovator’s Matrix is and how you can escape it.Mike and Joe discuss how the big challenge for innovators is breaking out of the current paradigms, similar to the plotline of The Matrix. Like the movie, each innovator needs to decide whether to take the red pill or the blue pill. There are five key aspects that define the innovator’s journey, or following the white rabbit:Curiosity and awareness: asking yourself what innovation isAcceptance: knowing it’s a journey and committing to continue to innovateUnderstanding: learning methods, tools and best practices around innovationAction: when trying new things, it involves mistakes that facilitate learningContinuous learning: the mindset and openness to learn new things alwaysThomas Edison’s famous quote epitomizes the mindset of an innovator: “I haven’t failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Most people would have given up and said it was impossible, but Edison’s mindset was different and he persevered. Companies that think they’ve figured it all out are really the most vulnerable, especially in start-ups and tech. The key to escaping the Matrix is to have the mindset necessary to overcome failure in order to keep pushing until there’s a breakthrough. Please subscribe, rate and leave a positive review of Ready for Change? podcast wherever you are listening! LINKS:Mike Jarmus, Host: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikejarmus/ Joe Kim, Vice President of Innovation & Chief Question Asker: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bigideajoe/ Learn more about Glory: https://www.glory-global.com/en-us/  Email us with questions or suggestions at: readyforchange@glory-global.com
