Play Episode Listen Later Jul 5, 2023 35:31

Rock Mysteries is BACK with Season 2, and our first episode revolves around one of the strangest and most troubling rock mysteries: the murder of former Elf and Rainbow drummer Gary Driscoll. Driscoll first connected with Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio) in 1965 and his career peaked with the first Rainbow album before Ritchie Blackmore fired him after that record's release. He then left the music business and became a working-class tile layer in his hometown of Ithaca, New York. In 1987, he was brutally murdered and the case is unsolved today. We welcome rock-n-roll historian and author Staci Layne Wilson to discuss this mystery and why it remains a cold case today. What role did Cobain's fellow rock star wife Courtney Love play in his demise? Play Episode Listen Later Jun 7, 2022 73:27

On our first show we explore the 1980 death of AC/DC lead signer Bon Scott. Known for his hard drinking lifestyle, Scott's energy and unbridled showmanship had helped drive AC/DC to the brink of massive stardom by the close of 1979. Yet Scott wasn't happy with the band or his party lifestyle. Having just scored their first true success in America with the "Highway to Hell" album and prime touring dates, the band set apart and Bon ended up hanging out in London. He'd never make it out alive. GUEST: Author Jesse Fink's updated biography of the enigmatic singer, Bon: The Last Highway, exhaustively researches Bon's time in the U.S. that previous summer and follows it through to his last moments in the backseat of a car in London. Fink's investigative work uncovers never-before heard statements and stories from key players who were present the night of Scott's death who all prove the rock icon didn't die from too much alcohol but a drug overdose instead. Also, Fink's research uncovers Scott's writing and contribution to the band's breakout album "Back in Black", released several months after his death. Could Scott's lyrics be on the album uncredited?
