"Beneath the Lilypad" is singer-songwriter Alexandra Savior's third album, but her first in five years. Several years ago, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, type 1. That's a condition marked with manic highs that can last for weeks or months as well as crushing lows of depression, she's had both, you'll hear about that. She's also dealt with psychosis, and has spent time in an in-patient facility. That mental health journey has informed her work as a songwriter and a musician and inspired the songs on the new album. She just turned 30 but she's been performing since high school when she was more or less discovered on YouTube by Courtney Love who helped launch her career.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. The mics pop like champagne as we usher Miami OG Lea Black back for part 2 in Dallas. What follows is a glitter cannon of gossip, gratitude, and girdle-tight life lessons—all in under an hour. Glitter vs. Grit Lea opens her designer diary: she once slid to the side so “drop-dead gorgeous” Joanna Krupa could shine, and even loaned baubles to castmates “starring in rented houses and leased Jaguars.” She applauds Bethenny Frankel's rag-to-Skinnygirl rise while roasting fame junkies who'll chase a camera “to the opening of an envelope.” Hollywood Stories & Humble Queens Grab your autograph book. Lea bumps into Faye Dunaway disguised in Juicy Couture, the boys accept a curbside first edition from Dyan Cannon, and Pol' watches Zoë Saldana crawl on the boutique floor to play with puppy SnowWhite90210. Patrik fires back: mistaking Courtney Love for a “homeless lady,” then auctioning Pamela Anderson's lap for $10 K at a gala. The moral, via icons Betty White and Anna Nicole Smith: class never goes out of style. Skincare Royalty & the Chump Army We chat about Lea Black Beauty serums, masks, and miracle oil and Pol' confesses he ditched Obagi for Lea Black Beauty. Cosmic Signs & Coffee Grounds Pol's 2nd half of Lea's Armenian coffee divination crowns Lea “queen of limitless lanes.” Two new ventures shimmer in the grinds: an affordable-housing empire for son RJ and a hush-hush jewelry play. The trio compare destiny detours—from a Phuket flight missed before the 2004 tsunami to pilots grounding planes on “feng-shui feelings.” Hot Topics & Runway Rundown Headlines fly: Gene Hackman's carbon-monoxide tragedy prompts a detector PSA. Jeff Bezos plans to rocket Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, and Katy Perry into orbit—Lea yells “Prenup, please!”Fashion time: Pol' torches the RHOM reunion looks—Lisa Hochstein's iridescent foil (“Forever 21 clearance”), Larsa Pippen's emerald ruche, and Alexia's metallic mini—branding the set “Star-Wars prom.” By contrast, Greg Lotus's portrait of Lea in a bias-cut ivory gown is christened “Rich-Bitch Perfection.” Money, Morals & Mega-Billions Lea slams corporate layoff kings, privatized-FAA chaos, and royal PR spin. Her mantra: “Show me where you spend your money, time, and influence, and I'll show your values.” Love, Security & Limitless Hustle Coffee grounds confirm attorney/philanthropist Roy Black is Lea's steady North Star—“that box is forever checked.” With home secure, she juggles a dozen gigs and yearns for five more. Patrik crowns her the “Ozempic of people—one shot and your goals slim to what matters.” Lea's final words: “I feel naked—inside and out—but drape me in couture and 60 carats, darling!” This is another Hurrdat Media Production. This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

One of the most famous acoustic guitars in rock history – Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E – will go on show at the Royal College of Music Museum in London as part of a landmark exhibition exploring Nirvana's groundbreaking MTV Unplugged performance. Opening on 3 June 2025, the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will be the first time Cobain's iconic guitar has been shown in the UK. Booking for Kurt Cobain Unplugged opens on Wednesday, 30 April. Visitors can join the waitlist to be among the first to know when tickets go on sale and receive updates and event highlights related to the exhibition. Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition delves into the musical legacy of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. It traces the remarkable journey of this iconic guitar, which became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction in 2020 when it was bought for over $6 million by Australian entrepreneur Peter Freedman AM. Peter is the founder of RØDE Microphones, founding supporter of the Royal College of Music's Australia Commonwealth Scholarship and has generously loaned the guitar for this special exhibition. Peter Freedman commented: ‘When I purchased this guitar, my intention was to have it begin a worldwide tour of exhibitions, to support performing artists. I am delighted that this intent will be premiered at the Royal College of Music, London, with the first exhibition of its kind and will support talented musicians worldwide.'The exhibition also reunites the guitar with another piece of rock history – Cobain's famous olive-green mohair cardigan, worn during the 1993 Unplugged performance. This marks the first time these two legendary items have been displayed together. Alongside these items, a carefully curated selection of Nirvana memorabilia will provide insight into the band's influence, Cobain's songwriting, and the enduring legacy of Nirvana and their MTV Unplugged performance. Key highlights of the exhibition also include: A selection of Nirvana gig posters featuring a 90s punk/grunge aesthetic.A selection of collectible Nirvana vinyl in its original shrink wrap. The top portion of a Soundboard of another guitar from the same series. The exhibition has been curated by Alan di Perna – one of America's foremost rock journalists, and Royal College of Museum Curator Gabriele Rossi Rognoni. Alan di Perna's work has appeared in titles including Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Classic Rock and Billboard amongst others, and he has interviewed iconic artists including Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Courtney Love and Pat Smear. Alan Di Perna says, ‘I'm delighted to be a part of the Royal College of Music Museum's first-ever rock music exhibition. MTV's Nirvana Unplugged in New York was a landmark event—a stand-out performance by a group that changed the course of rock history in the 1990s.' Gabriele Rossi Rognoni hopes the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will extend the profile and reach of the work of the Museum and Royal College of Music, opening cross dialogues with students of different backgrounds and creating bridges between historical and contemporary music. He says: ‘One of the treasures in the collections of the Royal College of Music Museum is the world's oldest guitar. I am thrilled that this exhibition will build on our extraordinary heritage, connecting it with a monument of today's music such as Kurt Cobain. I look forward to the dialogues, musical encounters and new ideas that this exhibition will spark among our visitors and the top-class musicians that study at the College.' A series of events will accompany the exhibition including new works and performances by RCM students inspired by the guitar alongside family friendly workshops and concerts. Dr. Phil says "sayonara" to Rosie O'Donnell, Courtney Love, Ellen DeGeneres, and every shameful celebrity giving up on America rather than giving President Trump a fair chance.
For this episode we're joined by veteran music scribe Phil Sutcliffe to discuss his years on Sounds, Q and MOJO. We start by hearing about our guest's Beatles-obsessed adolescence in the North London suburb of Barnet, then follow him up to Manchester University and his subsequent apprenticeship on the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Phil explains how he got his foot in the door at Sounds in 1974, initially reviewing gigs on Tyneside before moving back to London to become one of the weekly magazine's key '70s writers. We discuss the paper's transition from Gentle Giant and Back Street Crawler to the Damned and the Sex Pistols — and to the interviews Phil did with County Durham punks Penetration and beloved Salford bard John Cooper Clarke. From JCC's visit to the Oxford Poetry Festival in 1980, we turn our attention to the week's featured act — politicised post-punks Gang of Four — and thence to the more controversially reactionary Eric Clapton. Clips from John Hutchinson's 1981 audio interview with the guitar "God" prompt conversation about his musical evolution and the infamous 1976 outburst that inspired the launch of Rock Against Racism. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Joe Harriott (1964), Miles Davis (1969) and Al Green (1973), Jasper takes us out with his thoughts on articles about Courtney Love (1991), Snoop Dogg (2003) and Cardi B (2019). Please note that this episode was recorded before we learned of the very sad passings of former Gang Of Four bassist Dave Allen and Malian superstar Amadou Bagayoko — along with Phil Sutcliffe's fellow Sounds contributor Sandy Robertson. Many thanks to special guest Phil Sutcliffe. Pieces discussed: The Beatles: I Was A Beatlemaniac, Penetration: Anarchy In County Durham, The Bard Of Beasley Street At The Seat Of Learning, Gang of Four: Dialectics Meet Disco, Gang Of Four: The Revolution Lightens Up, Andy Gill meets Andy Gill, Eric Clapton audio, Eric Clapton: Out of the Darkness, Joe Harriott: Jazz Abstractionist, Miles Davis: In a Silent Way, Hole: Calling the Tune, Snoop Dogg and Welcome to the Cardi Party.

On this week's episode, we are joined by Johnny Echols, who was part of one of the greatest bands of all time, the 60's band Love. We are also joined by Mike Randle, co-founder of the band Baby Lemonade and Love w/ Johhny Echols, who, alongside Love singer/songwriter Arthur Lee & Echols, helped find new audiences for Love's music before Arthur died in 2006. We discuss how for a long time the music documentary Love Story was the only way to glean information about the mysterious band, how Johnny and Arthur originally met, Arthur's (and Love's) ability to create larger-than-life myths within their legacy, their disappointment with Elektra Records, the pros and cons of being a band in L.A., how playing in cavernous rooms on the Sunset Strip helped inform the sound of their first LP, how Arthur described the music in his head to the band, how Echols transformed Love's classic ‘7 and 7 Is' from an acoustic ballad to a punk classic, Arthur being backed by The Knack, the creation of their seminal classic album Forever Changes and how Mike got Arthur to revisit the album long after he had written it off, how Forever Changes was intended to be a double album with Neil Young producing, why the original members left the band, how Johnny was only 19 when the band was breaking up, recording their last single, the fight between Courtney Love and Slyvetster Stallone at a Love show and much more.So Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip yeah on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!! We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Linda Perry. ABOUT LINDA PERRYSinger, songwriter, musician, producer, and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Linda Perry first made her mark as an artist, serving as lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the group 4 Non Blondes, which is best known for the Top 15 pop hit “What's Up?” Following a couple of solo albums, Linda emerged as a powerhouse songwriter and producer thanks to her work on P!nk's multiplatinum Misundaztood album. The debut single, “Get The Party Started,” which Linda wrote solo, was a global smash. She followed it up with another solo-written composition, “Beautiful,” which became a chart-topping ballad for Christina Aguilera that earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Subsequent chart success came with Gwen Stefani's debut solo single “What You Waiting For,” Alicia Keys's “Superwoman,” Ariana Grande's debut single “Put Your Hearts Up,” Miley Cyrus's “Hands of Love,” and additional singles for Aguilera, including the Top 10 hits “Hurt” and “Keeps Gettin' Better.” Recently, Linda collaborated with Dolly Parton on the soundtrack of the film Dumplin', including the song “Girl in the Movies,” which was nominated for both a Golden Globe and a Grammy award. Linda is a four-time Grammy nominee, including a 2019 nomination for Producer of the Year, making her the only solo female producer to ever earn a nomination for their work producing other artists. The long list of artists Linda has produced, collaborated with, or had her songs covered by include Adele, Courtney Love, Cheap Trick, Faith Hill, Britney Spears, KT Tunstall, Weezer, Pat Benetar, Solange, L.P., Joan Jett, The Chicks, Vanessa Carlton, Celine Dion, Elvis Costello, and Lady Gaga. In addition to her prolific songwriting and production activities, Perry is a multi-faceted music industry entrepreneur, having worked as a music publisher, manager, or mentor with artists such as James Blunt, Dorothy, and Natasha Bedingfield.
Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss. “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades. Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands. We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. After Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan is Courtney Love's all-time rock'n'roll hero. Todd Almond performed Dylan's songbook on Broadway. They join us for a deeply personal celebration of the legendary songwriter. An electrifying, bewitching singer who, in the words of The New York Times can simultaneously imbue a single sustained note with “a plea, a wound, and a threat”, Courtney Love occupies a singular place in the rockstar pantheon. Her friend and collaborator Todd Almond is a Broadway multi-hyphenate equally acclaimed as a performer, lyricist and playwright, who took us ‘heaven on earth' (The New York Times) as the star of Conor MacPherson's Broadway smash hit Girl from the North Country. We brought Courtney and Todd together to celebrate the work of the greatest American songwriter of all-time: Bob Dylan. Whether you're a Bobcat, a Dylanologist, or just an old romantic, tune in for a one-of-a-kind celebration of a singular American talent from two extraordinary performers with unique and personal perspectives on his life and art. Remember Ethan, the gay prep school kid Jack met on the train back from Boston? He's returned home again for Capefest, an ill-defined free music festival that seems to be mainly about camping on the beach. Though Jack is apparently not a fan of popular music, he is easily convinced to come hang out, making Jen come as backup. Also attending? Henry, a veggie burger-grilling, Bruce Springsteen-covering renaissance man who has absolutely no interest in Jen and her inconsistent attempts at platonic friendship. Nikki has embedded herself in the Capeside High film department, getting the extremely offscreen Mr. Jordan to break all the rules of equipment loans so she can use it to work on her latest project. When Dawson decides to take his righteous indignation to her house, it backfires into an invitation for dinner from the adorably proud Principal Green, and exposure to her bedroom and values causes Dawson to experience a crisis of...well, interior design. Andie has decided to volunteer as Assistant Director on the school production of Barefoot In The Park, partly as a distraction from her feelings about her breakup with Pacey, but her plans go to hell when she finds out the English teacher directing the play has recruited Pacey specially to be his male lead. Touched by an Angel was a hit show we'd never seen that aired for nine years. During that run, the show tackled racism with an episode in 1999 titled "Black Like Monica," in which a white angel turns black for a little bit to learn about racism. This involved Monica, played by Roma Downey, to be in blackface. This special episode had a special guest star: Rosa Parks. You can find the Women Supporting Women (Anna Nicole and Courtney Love embracing) sweatshirt at Pipe Dreams.Call us for shout outs and dedications. 347 450 4239Video episodes, bonus episodes and our premium series WAWU—we're currently recapping Hey Paula—on Patreon.Check out potential drama and our Diamond Girls on our Instagram. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

An episode that breaks the mold! Here's what's to come in this episode: * We kick off this episode by discussing Courtney Love and her candid acknowledgment of her autism in a 1994 Rolling Stone interview. While she's open about her experiences, some of her language is problematic—for instance, referring to non-speaking autism as "introverted."* However, we delve into how many of the judgments and perceptions surrounding Courtney Love may be rooted in ableism, influenced by her autism diagnosis.* We explore the inherent connection between musical subcultures and autism, highlighting how these spaces can become a refuge for those who feel ostracized elsewhere.* Next, we dive into the powerful intersection between punk ethos and neurodivergence, unpacking how these two worlds resonate deeply with shared values and traits. Punk celebrates nonconformity, rejecting the rigid societal expectations and hierarchies that often marginalize neurodivergent individuals. It embraces the idea that standing up for what you believe in—no matter how unconventional—is a strength, not a flaw.* This ethos aligns with the autistic experience of navigating a world that frequently misunderstands or undervalues difference. Punk fosters a sense of belonging by creating a community for misfits—a safe haven for those who've been excluded or overlooked in more traditional spaces. In this way, punk and neurodivergence together challenge norms, celebrate authenticity, and amplify the voices of those too often silenced.* Realizing you are neurodivergent doesn't erase your punk identity—it deepens it. Subculture isn't just about aligning with a particular music scene or fashion; it's a gateway to discovering and embracing your most authentic self.* We also discuss how loud music, often a hallmark of punk, can be soothing and sensory-stimulating for many of us on the autism spectrum.* Punk and punk-era band names are often defined by connotations of violence, aggression, sex, fetishism, turmoil, and eruption, with many even referencing disability. This rebellious language reflects the feelings of being "othered"—a sensation that resonates deeply with the autistic experience. Just as punk challenges societal norms and embraces marginalization, the association with disability within punk culture highlights how both the neurodivergent community and the subculture at large confront rejection, discrimination, and the struggle to be understood.* Punk intertwines with the refusal to be seen through the neurotypical lens, rejecting the pressure to conform to societal expectations. It's about resisting the influence of outside forces and voices that seek to define who you are, instead embracing self-expression and authenticity on your own terms.* We also discuss how body modifications, like tattoos and piercings, play into this idea of reclaiming autonomy and defying societal norms. For many in the punk and neurodivergent communities, these mods serve as a powerful way to express individuality, resist outside judgment, and celebrate personal identity on their own terms.* We discuss how autism is often framed through neurotypical-centric lenses, such as infantilization, pity, and the "superhero" trope, which limit our agency and self-expression. Punk, however, challenges these narratives by reclaiming our power and refusing to let society define or diminish us.* Punk embraces an anti-aesthetic that celebrates imperfections, rejecting the need for polished or conventional beauty standards. This ties directly to autism, as both challenge societal expectations of "perfection" and instead embrace authenticity, quirks, and individuality.* The culture of punk is, at its core, authenticity without apology—and that's exactly what autistic people desire: spaces and cultures where they can be their true selves without the need to mask or conform.“When I talk about being introverted, I was diagnosed autistic. At an early age, I would not speak. Then I simply bloomed. My first visit to a psychiatrist was when I was like three. Observational therapy, TM for Tots, you name it, I've been there.” - Courtney Love (the one and only!!)“You [an autistic person] can't just go into a space and say, ‘yes, I am perfectly at home here.'” No, you have to change it to fit your needs. And that's fairly punk, because punk doesn't show up and say, ‘yes, this is acceptable.' No, we are going to rage against the machine.” - Matt“Yes, we want you, you misfit toys, to fit in perfectly here. You are a part of our merry band of autistics and you are perfect just the way you are.” - Angela“Yes, punk is saying we are different and that's enough, like we are enough and this f*****g sucks at the same time. It's not saying, like, ‘fix me', necessarily. It's saying, ‘this is my identity.'” - Angela Did you notice the connection between punk, subculture, and the autistic experience? In today's episode, we explore how punk's defiance and authenticity reflect the autistic spirit. Thanks for tuning in! She also discusses how we can come to understand the identity of a decade retroactively, why some writers continue to be read for many decades while others fade from popularity and that this phenomenon has more to do with circumstances rather than being a final judgement on the quality of the writing, and reveals who would be a terrific actor to play Eve Babitz in film.

Little did he know, that his wife, Nicole Kidman, was behind the scenes making sure he didn't win the auction. Because SHE wanted to win it, so she could give it to him as a gift. And apparently, she made Keith sweat thinking he lost the auction, only to surprise him a bit later. Courtney Love says that her next solo album includes a duet with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and guitar work from Will Sergeant of Echo and the Bunnymen. Her last solo album, Nobody's Daughter, was released in 2010. Marilyn Manson has dropped the lawsuit he filed against Evan Rachel Wood and abandoned an appeal attempting to revive a different defamation claim. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers will pay tribiute to fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Patti Smith on March 26th at New York's Carnegie Hall. Kurt Cobain is a celebrated and defiant icon of Generation X. His wife, Courtney Love, was once the most hated woman in America. Courtney, like Kurt, was unapologetic, fierce, determined, ambitious, authentic, and a total hypocrite. They were both totally in love and for a minute shined brighter than most. They challenged gender norms and the music industry patriarchy and reluctantly played the roles of their generation's John and Yoko by way of Sid and Nancy all while making great music, but only one of them would make it out of the nineties alive.
