Today we're diving into an absolutely wild romance scam involving a man accused of pretending to be a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver—or, depending on the day, an ultra-wealthy Swiss real estate mogul. Authorities say the four-year scheme targeted at least 26 women and brought in roughly $1.3 million. Apparently dating apps weren't stressful enough already.The details only get crazier. The alleged scam included social media accounts packed with 49ers gear, luxury cars and images designed to make the whole thing look legitimate. According to the story discussed on the show, some of the online material was AI-generated, and the fake identity became established enough online that search engines and AI tools reportedly started treating the guy like an actual football player.Then comes the fake wealth. Screenshots supposedly showed bank and investment accounts containing millions of dollars, and once relationships were established, an alleged accomplice would enter the picture as the “wealth manager.” Three-way calls, fake investment returns and promises of high-yield opportunities followed. When victims ran out of money or started asking questions? Suddenly their extremely successful NFL boyfriend became extremely unavailable.It launches the crew into a bigger conversation about romance scams, our weird relationship with wealth and just how easy it has become to manufacture an impressive-looking life online. Rafe points out that you barely need a real podcast anymore—you can film yourself in front of a microphone, dispense some motivational nonsense and convince the internet you've appeared on 400 episodes of something called The Alpha Wealth Mindset Experience.Okay, we made that title up. But you've absolutely seen that guy.Listeners pile on with stories of fake celebrities allegedly trying to scam people, including Martina McBride and Mark Harmon impersonators. If Mark Harmon suddenly slides into Mom's Facebook messages and needs $700 in gift cards, maybe call somebody.That's the kind of public service you only get from a funny podcast with absolutely no qualifications to provide public services.The show also tackles the old belief that celebrity deaths happen in threes and why our brains are so desperate to find patterns in random events.From there, we discover Goodwill is getting into the record-store business with a media-focused concept called Rewind. Vinyl, CDs, cassettes, VHS tapes, vintage audio gear and whatever forgotten three-disc CD changer somebody's mom finally convinced Dad to get out of the basement. It might be heaven. It might smell like somebody else's basement. Either way, we're interested.Then it's time for Crap on Celebrities, where things get wonderfully messy.The crew gets into music and entertainment news, including Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields Festival, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and Stevie Nicks. Love having time itself personally attack us.Elsewhere, an 85-year-old Donna Mills is reportedly making serious money on OnlyFans without full nudity, which sends Rafe into an impromptu financial analysis of the subscription business model. This is technically economics if nobody from an accredited university is listening.The entertainment chaos continues with Coyote vs. Acme, a creepy movie called Buddy that basically asks what would happen if a beloved children's mascot completely snapped, and news of Tom Cruise returning as Cole Trickle for a Days of Thunder sequel alongside Anne Hathaway.The crew also discovers a movie about the creation of Hooters is in development, accidentally invents an entirely different restaurant concept during the conversation, and immediately starts yelling “trademark” because apparently that's how intellectual property law works now.Finally, we get famous musicians trashing other famous musicians. Join me as I have an in depth, deep conversation with Kellii Scott from the band, Failure. Kellii Scott is the drummer for American alternative rock band from Los Angeles Failure.  During the 90's they  played countless live shows around the world and were revered as one the preeminent bands on planet earth. Sadly we would see the band break up in 1997.After Failures break up Kellii Scott became a drummer for hire and soon after  joined Blinker the Star for two albums, August Everywhere and Still in Rome, then joined Campfire Girls for their 2003 album, Tell Them Hi. Scott also played on a track titled ‘Best Friend' by Size 14 bassist Robt Ptak on his solo project Artificial Joy, Ptak put this on his own personal reverbnation page in 2013. As of 2005, he was playing drums for both Veruca Salt and Enemy. In 2008, his most recent band The Brontosaur released their self-titled album. From 2008-2012 Kellii could be heard playing on all Linda Perry's recording sessions, most notably Christina Aguilera's song “You Lift Me Up” and Courtney Love's “Letter To God”. And in 2013 he worked with the Dr Dre and a 72 piece orchestra at Capitol studios for a song on his upcoming album. In 2014 the world would see Failure return with all it's original members, tour the world and create what would be called by fans and critics far and wide one of the best records of 2015, The Heart Is A Monster. Currently, while awaiting Failure's return into the studio for their follow up record, he is lending his talents to teaching drums.

Courtney Love said she first crossed paths with Prince Andrew through Jeffrey Epstein in the early 2000s, describing Epstein as someone who moved easily through celebrity and elite circles. According to her account, she met Andrew at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse and later claimed the then-prince appeared at her Los Angeles home at around 1 a.m. “looking for sex.” Love said she rejected him, and her account was presented as another strange episode in the broader Epstein-Andrew orbit — not a formal legal allegation, but a celebrity recollection that added to the picture of Andrew's proximity to Epstein's world, his nightlife, and the social access Epstein was able to provide.The broader significance is that Love's claim fit into a growing pattern of stories about Epstein functioning as a connector between royalty, celebrities, money, and sexually charged environments. Andrew has repeatedly denied wrongdoing connected to Epstein and Virginia Giuffre's allegations, while Love's comments did not accuse him of assault. But the account still raised questions because it placed Andrew inside Epstein's social machinery and described conduct that, if accurate, was bizarre, entitled, and reckless for a senior royal already moving in circles later exposed as deeply toxic. THE NEW YORK OBSERVER — “I finally went up to Graydon and I said, ‘Hey, you know, I know you like me. I know you wanted me to be here, but I can also do covers.'” • • • That's today's guest, Mark Seliger. He's the same Mark Seliger who, at the moment of this exchange with Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, had already shot over 180 covers for Rolling Stone, where he was the chief photographer from 1992-2002. Seliger had been heavily recruited by GQ and Vanity Fair to move to Condé Nast. But, as he learned, the days of being Fred Woodward's go-to image maker were over. Once again, he was the new guy. And he saw an opportunity to reinvent himself. Fortunately, reinvention is Seliger's middle name. (Well, it's really Alan, but you get what we mean). For example: Seliger grew up in rural Texas, but decides to go big and moves to New York City to get into the magazine business. Reinvention #1. He gets early work at business magazines like Manhattan, Inc. In short time his portraiture lands him a few plum assignments at Rolling Stone. Reinvention #2. Unforgettable shoots and an immediate connection with Woodward lands him the title of chief photographer, and he picks right up where the legendary Annie Leibovitz leaves off. Reinvention #3. His exposure at Rolling Stone leads Seliger (along with his pal Woodward) to directing music videos for A-listers like Lenny Kravitz and Courtney Love, and Gap commercials with LL Cool J and Missy Elliott. Reinvention #4. When Covid hits, and publishing effectively shuts down, he pivots to documentary photography and produces an epic portfolio of an empty and still New York City that becomes the book, The City That Finally Sleeps. Reinvention #5. And somewhere in the middle of all of this, Reinvention #6: Seliger starts writing songs in his free time, and then forms the band Rusty Truck. And at the moment Seliger is reminding Graydon Carter that he knows his way around a cover shoot, Rusty Truck releases its first album, Luck's Changing Lanes, which is produced by Lenny Kravitz, Gillian Welch, Willie Nelson, Dave Rawlings, Sheryl Crow, T-Bone Burnett, and Bob Dylan. That's a lot. A whole lot. But for Seliger, it's all of a piece. Photography, music, work, life. He says it's all about following your curiosity. Observing. Not just looking but seeing. “For me,” he explains, “it's all about storytelling—the storytelling in photography translated well into the storytelling of songwriting. If you look on the cover of Hole's album "Celebrity Skin," you'll see her right away. Melissa Auf der Maur is standing to the left of Courtney Love. The 1998 album is the first one she recorded with the band. She joined in 1994 after bassist Kristen Pfaff died, and she played with them around the world, from a music festival in Australia to Tuktoyaktuk, a village in the Arctic Circle.But after a few years, Auf der Maur left Hole. She went on to have a highly successful career in music, including as bassist for the Smashing Pumpkins. She’s collaborated with many musicians and built a career as a solo artist. She’s also a photographer – a craft she studied in her university days. And now, she’s an author. Auf der Maur’s new book is called “Even The Good Girls Will Cry: A 90s Rock Memoir.” It chronicles her early life in Montreal and her time with Hole, and how she started making her own music. Melissa Auf der Maur is an acclaimed musician, photographer, curator, and producer, best known as the former bassist of rock bands Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. Her new memoir Even the Good Girls Will Cry covers those heady rockstar times of the 1990s, and is out now. She has also released two solo albums, Auf der Maur (2004) and Out of Our Minds (2010), the latter of which is part of a larger project that also includes a comic book and a short film. Melissa's photographs have been exhibited internationally, including at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and have appeared in such publications as Spin, Elle, Nylon, and American Photo.
