This week we travel back in time to just after the dawn of PUNK ROCK (1978-1981)! We discuss bands influenced by the 1st wave who then took punk into various sub-genres. If you don't think Punk is for you based on secondhand information, we ask that you listen with an open mind and prepare to get out some aggression. This episode features songs with the shortest track length that we've ever played; it's PUNK ROCK people! Punk is where Kevin started down his path of music fanaticism. Although, that was more based around the hardcore Punk scenes. This is the lead-up to hardcore, and what would establish punk as a lasting genre full of variety and originality. Hope you dig the 2nd wave!Songs this week include:The Dictators – “Faster And Louder” from Blood Brothers (1978)Magazine – “Shot By Both Sides” from Real Life (1978)Chelsea – “I'm On Fire” from Chelsea (1979)The Stranglers – “Dead Loss Angeles” from The Raven (1979)GG Allin – “One Man Army” from Always Was, Is, And Always Shall Be (1980)Zounds – “Can't Cheat Karma” from Curse Of The Zounds (1980)Soggy – “Waiting For The War” from Soggy (1981)The Cheifs – “Liberty” from Holly-West Crisis (1981)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

For the 33rd installment of the Fanzine Podcast, we welcome Chris Coleman, former editor of at least two important ‘zines from the 1980s post-punk UK Midlands: Stringent Measures and What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen. The first of these zines straddled a vibrant local indie scene that included the likes of Eyeless In Gaza, In Embrace, Attrition, and the Glass Records label (about which Chris put together a special edition) along with Chris's evident excitement for early U2. What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, while maintaining the fanzine format, declared itself musically with a first issue featuring interviews with The Waterboys, The Alarm - and Johnny Thunders, to whom it later dedicated a special issue (as it did Marc Bolan). WANWTTS also put out physical vinyl – EP's and albums alike - that included the likes of The Jazz Butcher, Jasmine Minks, The Membranes, Mike Scott and Nikki Sudden, and which therefore continued to place the zine at the heart of the mid-80s indie music scene. To this day, Chris continues to release records of lost archived recordings on his Seventeen label.Chris spent a Friday night indoors chatting with podcast host Tony Fletcher about his fanzine experiences back in the day. Other fanzines mentioned in this episode include Bucketful Of Brains, Alternative Sounds and Adventures In Reality, and the conversation also diverges into the likes of R.E.M. and The Smiths. We get to hear how Chris's parents once collated and stapled and distributed zines for him while he was on holiday, and we find out which of the aforementioned musicians once commented to him, “You have great veins.” (Hint: it should be obvious.)Visit https://tonyfletcher.substack.com/p/what-a-nice-way-to-turn-seventeen for images of some vintage What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, to find similar posts and pages dedicated to earlier Fanzine Podcasts, and for Tony's twice-weekly writings. Thanks to Noel Fletcher for the theme music, and Greg Morton at Omnibus Press for the logo template. The Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is available from here. Mark Chester aka Ginnels released their first album in a decade, The Picturesque, on February 7. He talks about what he's been up to (becoming a dad of two, mostly), playing with Autre Monde and why they've come to an end, songwriting, nostalgia, Popical Island, and lots more. Buy The Picturesque: https://ginnels.bandcamp.com/album/the-picturesque --- Press release: Ginnels never let up. Though it has been, staggeringly, eight long years since the last irresistible jangle pop transmission under the Ginnels moniker, nothing much has changed in Mark Chester's approach when it comes to the practice of music making, even if much everything else for Chester has seen considerable flux – he's now a father of two, and most shockingly of all for an indie popster of his ilk, gainfully employed. “It definitely started the same way all Ginnels stuff starts,” Chester explains, “which is just me looking through five years of phone demos and going ‘that's a decent song' and ‘that's a decent song', and if you keep that up then you have a full album.” The man himself might be coyly committed to making his process sound as pedestrian as possible, but from the moment the delicate chiming introduction of album opener ‘The Body Was Gone' goes widescreen – revealing an expanded sonic palette richer in timbre and exponentially wider in scope than anything Chester has let out into the world thus far – it is apparent that “The Picturesque” is poised to be less than parochial in its sonic purview. From here, “The Picturesque” plays like a gauzy road trip Super 8 footage cutting between scenes of sunset at Monument Valley and B-roll from around middle-Ireland, entirely soundtracked by some enchanted mixtape of heretofore unheard B sides from REM, XTC and The Go-Betweens, unexpected guest appearances from the surprisingly together-sounding ghost of Johnny Thunders and snippets from your coolest friends' unreleased instrumental experiments. All liberally rippled with Chester's unique ear for melody and appetite for the unexpected when it comes to crafting guitar parts. And this, by design, feels like a Guitar Record, above all else. For all its effortlessly sticky lyrical and melodic twists, “The Picturesque” separates itself within the mighty Ginnels catalogue in both the dexterity in playing and diversity in tone on show across these 12 tracks. And 12, of course as we know, being the optimum number of tracks for any LP to have, so bonus points for that too.

Jesse Malin is about as New York as you can get. How New York is he? Well, he's in a Martin Scorsese movie for starters. Jesse got his start in the hardcore band Heart Attack before pivoting to the rough and ready D-Generation in the ‘90s. After that band's demise, Jesse made an even harder pivot when he turned to his acoustic guitar and released the Ryan Adams-produced THE FINE ART OF SELF DESTRUCTION — in effect, reinventing himself as a rock and roll troubadour and NYC ambassador. And then about a year and a half ago, Jesse suffered a rare spinal stroke that threatened his ability to ever walk again. But in true LIFER fashion —and with the help of his community and his friends— Malin has soldiered on and is gearing up for a pair of benefit shows at the Beacon Theater on December 1st and 2nd that will mark his return to the stage. It's a pleasure to have Jesse on the show this week to put some shit into perspective for us and talk about Johnny Thunders, CBGB's, Bruce Springsteen, Ian Hunter, “Bringing Out The Dead”, Green Day, Rickie Lee Jones and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with The Clash. The future is unwritten, everybody!

In 1977, Cynthia and B-Girls singer Lucasta met at post-concert afterparty, and soon after formed The B-Girls. Like several bands in those days, The B-Girls basically learned to play onstage. Soon they were traveling back and forth to New York City, for monthly shows atCBGB; They opened for Blondie, toured with The Clash and were huge in Japan. In this episode, Cynthia and hostess Pleasant Gehman discuss New York's Lower East Side punk scene, women in punk, the B-Girls' career, and Cynthia tells wild stores about Stiv Bators, Johnny Thunders, The Ramones and much more. So maybe more accurately we will be diving face first into Blackie's comically ridiculous codpiece.Blackie grew up in Florida and New York in the 60s and considered following his uncle into a career in professional baseball. But it was the stage that called young Lawless and he learned to play guitar. This episode features cameo guest star appearances from Ace Frehley, Kiss, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Arthur Kane, Killer Kane, Sunset Strip, Sister, Nikki Six, Motley Crue, Shout at the Devil, London, Izzy Stradlin, Steve Adler, Slash, Guns n Roses, Fred Coury, Cinderella, Los Angeles, MTV, White Anglo Saxon Protestant, Show no Mercy, Alice Cooper, Ryne Duren, Iron Maiden, Capitol Records, Mike Varney, Animal (Fuck Like a Beast), Music For Nations, Tipper Gore, Filthy 15, PRMC, Parent Resource Music Center, N.W.O.B.H.M., New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Dungeons and Dragons, Steve Gutenberg, Can't Stop The Music, Golden Raspberry Awards, The Village People, The Dungeonmaster, Ragewar: The Challenges of Excalibrate, Digital Knights, Troubadour, Sammi Curr, Trick or Treat, T1000, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Patrick, Crimson Idol, Demi Lovato, Holy Fvck, The Occult, MAGA, Qanon, Harvard, Donald Trump, George. Shred With Shifty
Def Leppard and Dive Bombs: Phil Collen on His Bombastic “Photograph” Solo

Shred With Shifty

The influential British shredder talks about how he formed his playing style and demonstrates how to rip one of his most iconic leads. To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history. He and Shifty talk through Collen's formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and John Petrucci all played a hand in Collen's high-flying fretwork. How did Collen fit into the '80s arms race of speedy guitar playing? His participation might have had something to do with Thin Lizzy's Gary Moore. Collen's solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren't many tricks to Collen's sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the '80s. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! “Tell Me This” opens with a winding Johnny Thunders-esque guitar solo, a Stones-like fury, and a lyrical nod to the Smiths. Vocalist and guitarist Peter Argyropoulos shares, “Tell Me This” was inspired by the intro guitar riff. It was a practice riff; something I came up with while doing guitar exercises. I fleshed it out with the chorus and brought it to the band. But it felt a little plain and we shelved it. Fast forward a few months. Marc Slutsky had joined the band and brought with him a wonderful energy, not to mention a thumping backbeat. I thought his playing could be a good match for Tell Me This. So, I brought it back to the band during our last rehearsal or two before recording the album. Marc dug in and did exactly as I has hoped, his spirit and chill intensity immediately lifted the song over the top. After reviewing rehearsal recordings that night, he called me and said he thought the song could be a single. Turns out he was right! First one from the album”. In addition to Argyropoulos the rest of the band's line-up includes keyboardist Brina Kabler, guitarist Kevin Haaland (Skillet,) bassist Adam Kury (Candlebox,) and drummer Marc Slutsky who has toured and/or recorded with Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, Peter Murphy, and Todd Rundgren. Runaway Emotions is Sons of Silver's first full-length following a pair of EPs in 2020's Doomsday Noises (which sported three spots on the Billboard Active Rock chart) and 2022's Ordinary Sex Appeal, to be released through their own 4L Entertainment and distributed by Universal Music's Group's Bungalow label. In all, the band's songs have collectively accumulated more than nine million views and streams. Self-produced by the group, the record was mixed by renowned producer/engineer Tim Palmer, whose credits include Robert Plant, David Bowie, and U2 to name a few. “These guys epitomize the essence of classic alternative rock,” says Palmer about working with the band. “Their music is fueled with both power and raw emotion, with genuinely profound lyrics. Their album is a treasure trove of well-crafted, memorable songs and I really enjoyed collaborating with them.” “For me, music is about capturing a spirit, an energy, a feeling,” says bassist Adam Kury. “The record is a warning, if we continue down this path, we're doomed,” adds Argyropoulos. “But if you look at it from a different angle, we share more than we realize, even if we tend to focus on what separates us. At its best, rock ‘n' roll brings us together, and celebrates what we have in common”.

It was fun.   Podcasting.      The evolutionary ladder.     Fascism. Kapo.     Johnny Thunders in Michigan.       Ken's Trump prediction. Cancel Culture.     Dave Chappelle.      David Feldman. Sweet memories.    Tony Shalhoub.        ChatGPT jokes. Anti-Comedy.     High Radio Criticism.

“Shambolic” maybe an overused word when it comes to my favorite band, The Replacements, but it’s an apt term for tonight’s show. Or at least the first ten minutes. Yes, it’s a mini-disaster. After airing this week’s selection for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” series by The Vibrators, I talked about the fact that you can now purchase the version I world premiered last week by Jeremy Porter at his bandcamp. (http://jeremyporter.bandcamp.com).  In fact, please go purchase it now, as all proceeds go to the Hater Kitty Army. But after introducing a re-airing the tune, my broadcast program decided to completely rearrange my playlist and a completely different tune aired for a few seconds. I quickly fixed the issue, though, and everything was fine after that. Tonight’s show is a collecton of tunes that I’ve been listening to in my spare time. There’s a set devoted to my favorite rock and roll couple, Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric, inspired by “Do You Remember This”, a clever little tale of their relationship that may or may not be true. There’s a set that sort of centers around Johnny Thunders, beginning with a couple of Kinks songs before heading into a […]

When you look back over Glen Matlock's career, the parts involving the Sex Pistols are relatively short blips. Yes, they're titans that cast a tall shadow on everything else, but Glen has carved a path for himself the last few years very much his own. He's become a go-to session guy for legends like the Faces and Blondie (who gave a triumphant performance at Coachella last weekend), as well as his own excellent solo career. His latest, Consequences Coming, is out on April 28th and contains all the vitriol an aging punk looking at the world today can muster. It's among his best work, solo or otherwise. We also get into Pistols reunions, playing with Iggy, Johnny Thunders, Ian Hunter and others and (finally!) the release of the Rich Kids album Ghosts of Princes in Towers from 1978 on Record Store Day on the 22nd. Enjoy hearing from a bona fide legend!  www.glenmatlock.co.uk www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
