Ocean container rates on the eastbound Trans-Pacific are falling by double digits in a surprise move from China carriers ahead of new US port fees. The ship tax, which begins next week, charges China-owned or operated ships $80 per net tonnage for each voyage to the U.S. and could cost major players like Cosco and OOCL as much as $2.1 billion in 2026. Autonomous trucking company Kodiak AI just debuted on the NASDAQ after successfully combining with Ares Acquisition Corporation II, resulting in a $2.5 billion valuation for the newly public company. Kodiak secured more than $275 million in funding through this de-SPAC transaction, which CEO Don Burnette noted marks an inflection point for the industry as self-driving technology matures toward commercial deployment. Additionally, the Senate confirmed David Fink, a former Pan Am Railways president and fifth-generation railroader, to lead the Federal Railroad Administration. President Trump nominated Fink, stating he would "deliver the FRA into a new era of safety and technological innovation". Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This episode features a conversation with Karl Amundson and Emily Fink about their musical: Falling Forward. Falling Forward is about Meghan, a queer 27-year-old sculpture artist who is leaving New York City, moving in with her mom in Michigan and giving up on her artistic aspirations. However, packing her apartment proves to be a noisy affair, as all of Meghan's belongings-- including a Bong, a Self-Help Book, a Vibrator, a Family Portrait, a smart-device, and more—come to life, forcing Meghan to reckon with her own role in her terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad year. Equal parts memory play, fever-dream, generational satire, and coming-of-age story, Falling Forward follows Meghan as she teeters on the brink of change, searching for certainty in her uncertain world. This episode features the songs “Guru Say!” performed by Karl Amundson, Emily Kristen Morris, Emily Fink, Danny White, and Kimberly Immanuel, as well as “If You're Smiling” performed by Kimberly Immanuel, Emily Kristen Morris, Karl Amundson, Emily Fink, and Michelle Coben. There's a quiet power in learning how to sit with your own feelings—and in this episode of A Fresh Story, we dig into that transformative work. Executive coach and licensed clinical social worker Laura Fink joins Olivia Howell for a conversation that goes far beyond therapy buzzwords, revealing the real, raw, and sometimes messy truth of what it means to be emotionally agile in today's world. From the endless swirl of social media comparisons to the guilt we carry over emotions we “shouldn't” have, Laura reminds us that the question isn't whether we'll face struggles—it's who we'll be when they arrive.Laura opens the door to emotional agility as both a practice and a lifeline. She shares how we often fall into one of three unhelpful patterns—bottling, brooding, or splashing our feelings everywhere—and explains why none of them lead to real relief. Instead, she guides us toward awareness, naming what we feel, and learning how to move through emotions without judgment. With vulnerability and clarity, Laura makes it clear that our bodies, not our racing thoughts, hold the deepest truths we need to hear. For anyone navigating divorce, single motherhood, or simply the everyday chaos of modern life, this conversation is a balm. Laura's perspective offers not just hope, but tangible tools for slowing down, checking in, and choosing emotional honesty over repression or chaos. It's an episode about courage, resilience, and the radical practice of honoring your own humanity—even when the world tells you to “calm down.”

Today, Hunter was joined once again by the Executive Director of North Dakota's Commission of Legal Counsel for the Indigent, Travis Fink. Last time, Travis joined the show to detail a bleak outlook for public defense in the state. Not enough attorneys in both the contract and full-time systems, inadequate pay, and crushing workloads left Travis with little choice. He drafted up a letter preparing to tell the courts the public defender would be taking no new cases, but before he could send it out, the legislature threw the system a lifeline.
