Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is an important part of AC/DC's catalog to their fans around the world. However, when and what you heard on the album varied from country to country. Originally released in Australia in 1976 with a cover that looked like something Angus drew with crayons after school, DDDDC featured some all time anthems like the title track and Jailbreak. But around the world not only would the cover be different but the songs and lengths of certain songs were changed based on what had already been released in different territories. Perhaps most importantly, the US record company (ATCO) decided not to release the album as the band were unable to tour and therefore promote the album in the States. Five years later after the success of Highway to Hell, the demise of lead singer and character Bon Scott and the triumphant (and multi diamond selling) return of the band with Brian Johnson on Back in Black, AC/DC were in demand. So despite the protests of the band who didn't want it released as they had a new singer, new bass player (Cliff Burton had replaced Mark Evans) and new trajectory with that lineup, Dirty Deeds was finally released in 1981. Bon Scott's menacing lyrics and snarling vocals are in their full glory on this record with AC/DC classics like Problem Child, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and the fan favorite Big Balls as he talks about his fancy dance parties (or is he...) Malcolm's hammering the rhythm with those big AC/DC riffs but he lays down some bluesy stuff on tracks like Ride On and There's Gonna Be Some Rockin'. Angus Young is still about 21-22 at this point so while there are flashes of brilliance that would show he'll one day be regarded as an all-time guitar legend, there are some spots where he's still trying to catch up with his big brother. With 7 million in US sales, the record execs got what they wanted but did it hamper the next Brian Johnson album, For Those About To Rock We Salute You? It may have been a bit confusing at the time and the imported version is different than the one we grew up on but there's a lot of fun to be had on Dirty Deeds. Somehow, the driver avoids getting hit. The packages? Less fortunate.That leads to Moon remembering the extremely sensible combination of drinking in an Austrian castle and shooting crossbows, Rafe remembering a neighbor who got drunk and fired a crossbow inside his apartment, and everyone wondering exactly how legal backyard archery is when your “target practice” starts entering somebody else's ZIP code. Naturally, the conversation then arrives at Rizzuto's personal nemesis: a giant groundhog living next door.The groundhog keeps wandering onto Rizzuto's property and tormenting his dogs, while everyone else basically sides with the groundhog. Lern names him Justin. Moon suggests the animal may have been there first. Rizzuto reaches full Bill Murray in Caddyshack mode while attempting to figure out what animal control might actually do. At this point, Justin the Groundhog has representation and Rizzuto does not.O.J. Simpson's 2006 hidden-camera prank show, Juiced, was apparently intended as part of an O.J. comeback attempt, including a prank where Simpson posed as a used-car salesman trying to sell a white Ford Bronco with a fake bullet hole. He joked about the Bronco's “escapability,” talked about making the vehicle famous and somehow participated in a production where everyone apparently decided subtlety was for cowards.The crew digs into reports that people involved with the production may have had another motive: getting O.J. comfortable enough on camera to potentially say something revealing. Because apparently the history of television still had a few terrible ideas left in the tank.Crap on Celebrities brings even more entertainment gossip, including Ella Langley chasing a huge Billboard record, Tony Iommi remembering his final conversation with Ozzy Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne sharing another mysterious story from her youth, an unreleased early Van Halen demo, Jimmy Kimmel retirement speculation, John Mulaney potentially stepping into Get Smart, and the news that Lori Loughlin is back on the market — information Rafe handles with tremendous professionalism... Meaning none.There's also Nicolas Cage dealing with a massive sinkhole near his Malibu home, football finally returning, King Scott settling into new-dad duty, the crew scrambling to make their picks, and preparations for another round of Read My Lips.Apparently Quaaludes are back, because society looked around at everything currently happening and decided what we really needed was a pharmaceutical throwback. Reports that methaqualone — better known as Quaaludes or “ludes” — has been making an underground comeback decades after pharmaceutical production disappeared in the United States. That sends the crew straight into stories about the drug's 1970s reputation, The Wolf of Wall Street, Lern's bassist Richard remembering the old days in New York, and Rizz casually revealing that he once took what he believes was a Quaalude sometime around 1998 or 1999. How was it? He “lost the evening.” Good review. Very informative. Five stars.Of course, even Rizz admits he has no idea what he actually took, which leads directly to the episode's only useful public service announcement: no pills, no powders. Please do not go hunting for mystery pharmaceuticals because you heard the idiots on your favorite funny podcast talking about them.Then things somehow wander into Spanish fly, Bill Cosby, gas-station bathroom vending machines, Beavis and Butt-Head and a surprisingly detailed discussion about aphrodisiacs. We started with Quaaludes and ended up investigating an emerald-green blister beetle. Radio is an important medium. Thankfully, it's finally time to play Read My Lips.The rules are simple: somebody gets put into audio isolation, another member of the show silently gives them a word, and the isolated player has three chances to figure it out by reading their lips. Listeners bet on or against the contestant for prizes.Then Devon steps up and apparently activates a superpower nobody knew she had. She gets “fettuccine.” She gets “smart ass.” Campfire finally gives her some trouble, but that's only the warm-up. On her next trip into isolation, Rizz gives her “Worcestershire” — a word half the population can't pronounce while HEARING IT — and Devon gets it. Immediately.At this point, it temporarily becomes an investigation into whether Devon has been secretly reading everyone's lips for years. She follows Worcestershire by immediately getting “flapjack,” and suddenly Rafe is declaring that they've found Neo.Rizz gets his turn and manages to nail “chickenpox,” but “juxtaposition” sends him down a path involving blue jeans, trampolines and “justice of the peace.” Lern battles “burrito” before recovering with “blowtorch” and “horsefly.” Devon comes back for “ragamuffin” and gets impressively close before finally meeting her greatest enemy: the completely ridiculous word “skinflint.” Then comes Rizz's final performance. His word is “bonehead.” His guesses are not “bonehead.”Things only deteriorate when the next word is “deadbolt,” resulting in guesses that include “tadpole” and one answer that definitely demonstrates why lip reading should never be used as sworn testimony. By the end, Devon has established herself as the show's lip-reading legend, multiple listeners walk away winners, Rizz has discovered several new words that were never actually being said, and we've squeezed an unreasonable amount of chaos into less than half an hour.It's games, ridiculous stories, sarcastic humor and Rizz and the gang doing what they do best: taking something incredibly simple and making it unnecessarily complicated. Today's episode begins exactly where every respectable radio program should: debating canned chili and whether The Rizzuto Show should abandon broadcasting altogether to open a chili parlor. Because apparently decades of radio experience were merely preparation for serving questionable bowls of meat during a St. Louis summer.The crew gets into a disturbing local story involving two kittens rescued after being thrown from a moving vehicle, which launches a conversation about animal cruelty, punishment, and why there have been so many bizarre animal-abuse cases around the St. Louis area. The name Stevie Wright probably doesn't ring a bell. It should. Wright was the lead singer of The Easybeats, Australia's first international rock act and the band that gave the world "Friday on My Mind" in 1965. Then he made Hard Road.Released in 1974 and produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, the duo who would immediately go on to produce AC/DC's first six albums. Hard Road features Malcolm Young on guitar and a teenage Angus Young as the live touring band. The title track is, as patron Gavin Reid puts it, "Highway to Hell was a slower Hard Road." The blueprint was right here.And then there's "Evie," a 10-minute, three-part rock opera that hit #1 in Australia in 1974, one full year before "Bohemian Rhapsody." Despite the allusion in the title, today's song has no spiritual content or religious references. It's just a description of life on the road with a hard rock band that's paying its dues. And, as the band members would tell you, they were–and are–a rock band, not a punk band, thank you very much. AC/DC was formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young in their hometown of Sydney, Australia. The band name came from an electrical adapter on a sewing machine owned by their sister and not, dear reader, from the street slang that hints at one's sexual orientation. Within two months, the brothers Young were in the studio at their first recording sessions, and five months after that's they were touring Australia supporting and opening for Lou Reed. Their first lead singer, Bon Scott, joined the band in time to record their first studio album, High Voltage, in November 1974. That record was released in a limited market at first, but it did give the band its first Top 20 hit (“Baby, Please Don’t Go”) and their first radio play in the United States. The follow-up, T.N.T., led to an international deal with Atlantic Records in 1976. The next five years were undoubtedly the golden years for the band. Their third offering, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, was released in late 1976, and the band toured extensively around Australia, Europe and the Americas for the better part of the next three years. Put yourself in their shoes — 4 albums in as many years, with each album requiring at least 128 concerts a year — and you'd start to think of the road as being hellish. And that's the origin of the song we dive into in this episode.

Born on December 13, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa, and raised in a musical household, he started out playing cello and piano. 1990 is an odd time for a hard rock band from the late 70's to make a comeback.  Hair metal was declining rapidly, and music that would form the grunge movement was percolating up in the pacific northwest.  But that is exactly what AC/DC did with their album The Razors Edge.  The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 4 on the UK albums chart, and it would become AC/DC's third highest selling album behind “Back in Black” and “High Voltage.”After concluding their 1988 world tour the band had some changes and interruptions.  Drummer Simon Wright left the group to join Dio, and was replaced by Chris Slade who would be with the group until 1994.  Front man and songwriter Brian Johnson took some time off to finalize his divorce, which left brothers Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Angus Young (lead guitar) to write all the songs for the album.  They would continue to be the songwriters for the band through 2020.Critical reviews of the album were mixed, with negative comments revolving around the idea that this album was nothing new for the band. With the benefit of hindsight it may be that the consistency with AC/DC's previous works is actually a strength of the album.  In a period of big shifts in rock music, AC/DC provided a point of stability and a return to hard rock origins.Friend of the show Julie Doran joins us to bring us this high energy hard rock masterpiece with Rob. Are You ReadyThe anthem that leads of side 2 of the album reached number 16 on the US charts, and became the band's only number 1 hit in New Zealand.  It is used in a number of sports events and is also familiar as the official theme for WWE SmackDown on Fox.ThunderstruckThe lead off track and lead single to the album is a signature song for the band.  It started as a "little trick" Angus Young played on guitar, and Malcolm built the rhythm guitar behind that riff.  It has been performed in almost every live show the band has performed since its release. MoneytalksThis track reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first top 40 hit for AC/DC since Back in Black in 1981.  Interestingly, the song has not been performed live since the band toured The Razors Edge.   Part of the appeal of AC/DC on this album could have been the downturn in the economy at the time, striking a cord with blue collar employment struggles.  If so, money really does talk!The Razors EdgeWhile this song is the title track it was not released as a single.  This dark track talks about the fine line between success and failure, good and evil, life and death.  "You're running out of lives, and here comes the razor's edge." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Mel Torme (from the motion picture "Home Alone")This Christmas classic saw its debut from Judy Garland in the motion picture "Meet Me in St. Louis".  Mel Torme's version was used in the Christmas movie "Home Alone" which was in theaters in 1990. STAFF PICKS:Keep On Loving Me Baby by Colin JamesWayne starts out the staff picks with a Canadian blues singer-songwriter.  This cover from James' second album, Sudden Stop, is a high energy cover of a tune originally written by Otis Rush in 1958.  James benefitted from the blues revival of the time, as well as the soon-to-come swing revival in the early- to mid-90's.Chain of Fools by Little CaesarLynch brings us another cover originally performed by Aretha Franklin and written by Don Covay in 1967.  Little Caesar is a hard rock band formed in the late 80's which had a short career before problems with their label, and the eclipsing of hard rock by grunge contributed to their decline.  This cover from their debut single was their most memorableDiabolic Tastemaker by the Cherry Poppin' DaddiesBruce's staff pick is a deep cut off the Daddies' debut album "Ferociously Stoned."  This horn-heavy track first appeared on their 1989 demo tape before it was added to their album.  The band  at the time was an amalgam of punk, funk, jazz, ska, and swing at the time, thought future albums would move heavily towards swing.If You Needed Somebody by Bad Company Julie features the second single off Bad Company's ninth studio album, Holy Water.  It was their first top 40 hit since “Rock and Roll Fantasy” back in 1979.  The rock ballad hails from BadCo's days with Brian Howe as the front man, as Paul Rodgers had left the group in 1982 and was performing solo at the time.  Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction Rob finishes off the staff picks with the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual, and the biggest single, topping the Billboard Modern Rock charts for four weeks.  The dog barking is Perry Farrell's pet Annie, who was brought to the studio.  The barking was not planned, but the coincidence was included on the track. COMEDY TRACK:Do the Bartman by The SimpsonsBart Simpson closes us out this week with this lost epic.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device.
