What the Riff?!?
1990 - December: AC/DC “The Razors Edge”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2025 46:59

1990 is an odd time for a hard rock band from the late 70's to make a comeback.  Hair metal was declining rapidly, and music that would form the grunge movement was percolating up in the pacific northwest.  But that is exactly what AC/DC did with their album The Razors Edge.  The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 4 on the UK albums chart, and it would become AC/DC's third highest selling album behind “Back in Black” and “High Voltage.”After concluding their 1988 world tour the band had some changes and interruptions.  Drummer Simon Wright left the group to join Dio, and was replaced by Chris Slade who would be with the group until 1994.  Front man and songwriter Brian Johnson took some time off to finalize his divorce, which left brothers Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Angus Young (lead guitar) to write all the songs for the album.  They would continue to be the songwriters for the band through 2020.Critical reviews of the album were mixed, with negative comments revolving around the idea that this album was nothing new for the band. With the benefit of hindsight it may be that the consistency with AC/DC's previous works is actually a strength of the album.  In a period of big shifts in rock music, AC/DC provided a point of stability and a return to hard rock origins.Friend of the show Julie Doran joins us to bring us this high energy hard rock masterpiece with Rob. Are You ReadyThe anthem that leads of side 2 of the album reached number 16 on the US charts, and became the band's only number 1 hit in New Zealand.  It is used in a number of sports events and is also familiar as the official theme for WWE SmackDown on Fox.ThunderstruckThe lead off track and lead single to the album is a signature song for the band.  It started as a "little trick" Angus Young played on guitar, and Malcolm built the rhythm guitar behind that riff.  It has been performed in almost every live show the band has performed since its release. MoneytalksThis track reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first top 40 hit for AC/DC since Back in Black in 1981.  Interestingly, the song has not been performed live since the band toured The Razors Edge.   Part of the appeal of AC/DC on this album could have been the downturn in the economy at the time, striking a cord with blue collar employment struggles.  If so, money really does talk! The Razors EdgeWhile this song is the title track it was not released as a single.  This dark track talks about the fine line between success and failure, good and evil, life and death.  "You're running out of lives, and here comes the razor's edge." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Mel Torme (from the motion picture "Home Alone")This Christmas classic saw its debut from Judy Garland in the motion picture "Meet Me in St. Louis".  Mel Torme's version was used in the Christmas movie "Home Alone" which was in theaters in 1990. STAFF PICKS:Keep On Loving Me Baby by Colin JamesWayne starts out the staff picks with a Canadian blues singer-songwriter.  This cover from James' second album, Sudden Stop, is a high energy cover of a tune originally written by Otis Rush in 1958.  James benefitted from the blues revival of the time, as well as the soon-to-come swing revival in the early- to mid-90's.Chain of Fools by Little CaesarLynch brings us another cover originally performed by Aretha Franklin and written by Don Covay in 1967.  Little Caesar is a hard rock band formed in the late 80's which had a short career before problems with their label, and the eclipsing of hard rock by grunge contributed to their decline.  This cover from their debut single was their most memorableDiabolic Tastemaker by the Cherry Poppin' DaddiesBruce's staff pick is a deep cut off the Daddies' debut album "Ferociously Stoned."  This horn-heavy track first appeared on their 1989 demo tape before it was added to their album.  The band  at the time was an amalgam of punk, funk, jazz, ska, and swing at the time, thought future albums would move heavily towards swing. If You Needed Somebody by Bad Company Julie features the second single off Bad Company's ninth studio album, Holy Water.  It was their first top 40 hit since “Rock and Roll Fantasy” back in 1979.  The rock ballad hails from BadCo's days with Brian Howe as the front man, as Paul Rodgers had left the group in 1982 and was performing solo at the time.  Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction Rob finishes off the staff picks with the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual, and the biggest single, topping the Billboard Modern Rock charts for four weeks.  The dog barking is Perry Farrell's pet Annie, who was brought to the studio.  The barking was not planned, but the coincidence was included on the track. COMEDY TRACK:Do the Bartman by The SimpsonsBart Simpson closes us out this week with this lost epic.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Sup VoiceHeads! We do a quick case study on the great Van Halen to look at the stellar advantages of matching lead tones!  Even the biggest David Lee Roth fans would admit Sammy Hagar had the superior vocal instrument- so why is the classic Van Halen era so much more iconic and beloved by fans? The easy answer is showmanship of course.  DLR is the split-jumping motor mouth macdaddy who seduced an MTV generation, but there's something more relevant to the music itself.I believe it's because David Lee Roth succeeded in matching Eddie Van Halen's lead guitar tone with his voice.  Almost all the great bands do this.  Joe Perry matching Steven Tyler, Robert Plant matching Jimmy Page, James Brown matching the lead brass, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson matching Angus Young's SG, Raymond Zarick matching Jim Morrison, Steve Vai and Randy Rhodes matching Ozzy Osbourne...It's a delicate art with various hard vocal techniques that we can acquire and master both to imitate the greats, and to create great art of our own!If you've ever wondered what makes the difference between seeing a band with the original line-up, or with changes made to the line-up and whether or not the fans feel like they're getting what they came for, this podcast episode is just for you!www.allvoicemedia.comIf you're interested in training your voice directly with me, check out All Voice Media: Backstage.  Reach out by email direct at ian@allvoicemedia.com

__________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Highway To Hell" wird im Podcast gesprochen: (12:31) – "Highway To Hell"(30:24) – "Night Prowler"(40:16) – "Girls Got Rhythm"(47:25) – "Touch Too Much"(56:37) – "If You Want Blood (You Got It)"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Highway To Hell" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/swr1-meilensteine-acdc-highway-to-hell-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Though AC/DC are one of the most revered and successful bands in the history of rock n roll, in 1979 they hadn't cracked the Top 100 in the US. The killer riffs laid down by Malcolm Young had gained them a strong following in Europe and their native Australia but they had yet to breach the great big U-S-of-A. So in 1979 they brought in a new producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange to give them an edge. And though they were all skeptical after giving Eddie Kramer a shot, once Mutt showed them he knew how to sing, how to get the most out of Angus's guitar and how to put together songs, they were all on board. However, though this would be their big breakthrough in America with Highway To Hell reaching the Top 20, the celebration wouldn't last as lead singer and primary antagonist Bon Scott would soon die while living that rock n roll life. But before he left he gave us some of his patented sexual innuendo (Walk All Over You, Love Hungry Man, Touch Too Much) and his description of his lifestyle in the title track. Cliff Williams had settled in on the bass after Powerage and the live album If You Want Blood You Got It and Angus Young came of age with the help of Mutt Lange in the studio. The result is some of their greatest riffs (Highway To Hell, If You Want Blood (You've Got It), fan favorites (Girls Got Rhythm, Shot Down In Flames) and controversy (Nightprowler). It marked the end of an era with Bon Scott but the start of working with Mutt Lange who would help their next album become the 2nd biggest selling album of all time. I remember this day vividly. November 1997, when I was still recording artist interviews to quarter inch tape, and using a razor blade to move stuff around and add in the perfect songs, to get the special ready for radio. In walked Angus Young. He wasn't alone. In fact, he was dwarfed by the presence of two people, sitting on either side of him, across the recording console. Their presence seemed to fade from my view as Angus and I got into his memories of the great Bon Scott, to whom AC/DC was paying tribute with the then forthcoming box set Bonfire, titled, in a way, by the former front man himself. Angus tells that story, and so many more about his and Bon's bond, and their rise together on the long way to the top. "Back in Black," the iconic album by AC/DC, emerged as a rock masterpiece during a challenging period for the band. Released in 1980, the album was a tribute to their late lead singer, Bon Scott, who had passed away earlier that year. Brian Johnson took over vocal duties, and the band decided to forge ahead in his honor. Recording took place at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange at the helm. The studio sessions faced emotional hurdles as the band coped with Scott's loss, but they channeled that energy into creating a hard-hitting, no-nonsense rock album. The title track, "Back in Black," became an anthem, showcasing Angus Young's electrifying guitar work. Other standout tracks like "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Hells Bells" contributed to the album's massive success. "Back in Black" not only revitalized AC/DC but also became one of the best-selling albums globally. Its enduring popularity is attributed to the album's gritty sound, infectious energy, and the seamless integration of Brian Johnson's vocals into the band's signature style. The album's impact endures, solidifying its place in the pantheon of rock history. #RockLegendsACDC #ACDC #RockIcons #HighVoltageRock #Thunderstruck #ClassicRock #BackInBlack #ACDCFans #AngusYoung #BrianJohnson #RockNRollPower https://www.acdc.com/ https://www.ac-dc.net/ https://instagram.com/acdc?igshid=NzZlODBkYWE4Ng== https://www.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=100047152025766 https://open.spotify.com/artist/711MCceyCBcFnzjGY4Q7Un?si=6vAfj0qYTrW0WF2_BFwnZA https://youtube.com/@acdc?si=dy_JAhOkao-gRQW6 Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup

In the forty-eighth episode of Making Mt. Rushmore, host/moderator/panelist Steve Riddle welcomes Ashley Cruse, Andy Atherton, Steve Bennett, and Aaron George to discuss which Lead Singers deserve a place on their respective lists. Is Freddie Mercury a no-brainer? What about Steve Perry? Does Mick Jagger grab a spot? Does Eddie Vedder or Jon Bon Jovi deserve a place? After that, they discuss which Guitarists will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that Eddie Van Halen shouldn't get a spot? Will Jimi Hendrix be included? Is Eric Clapton in the conversation? What about Carlos Santana or Angus Young?

This week is another episode all about bands playing other bands' songs… well one band in particular this time around. For those about to rock: we are paying tribute to the one and only; AC/DC! It only took a little thunder and lightning striking experience by way of Kevin's lack of electrician skills to prompt this appreciation!!! It may have taken a few years off his life, but at least we got this killer concept of an episode out of it. AC/DC is such a staple in rock, but perhaps these covers will put a new spin on their amazing songs! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Hard-Ons – “Let There Be Rock (featuring Henry Rollins)” from Let There Be Rock - single (1991)Lemmy & Jake E. Lee – “It's A Long Way To The Top (The Mission UK Remix)” from Remixed To Hell: AC/DC Tribute (2000) Halestorm – “Shoot To Thrill” from ReAniMate 2.0: The CoVeRs - EP (2013)Saxon – “Problem Child” from Inspirations (2021)Razed In Black – “Hells Bells” from Covered In Black: An Industrial Tribute To The Kings Of High Voltage AC/DC (1997)Iced Earth – “Highway To Hell” from Tribute To The Gods (2002)Dynamite Boy – “TNT” from Punk Goes Metal (2000)Joe Lynn Turner & Phil Collen – “Back In Black (Die Krupps Remix)” from Remixed To Hell: AC/DC Tribute (2000)Living Colour – “Back In Black” from Collideøscope (2003)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Martin Popoff may be the most prolific rock writer in the world with over 115 books to his name. Unlike other writers who prefer to delve into the gossip and tabloid portions of a bands history, Martin focuses on the music and the albums that we all love as rock fans. His latest, AC/DC at 50, is a beautiful coffee table book that features photos of the band on stage, in the studio, rare album covers and memories from their decades of dominance as the world's premier hard rock band. Martin tells 50 different stories throughout AC/DC's career that were important, inflection points or at a time when the band needed a hand. Brothers Malcolm & Angus Young may be private people but they've built a legacy that Martin has distilled to 50 points in time that you can read all the way through or pick and choose which stories you want to learn more about today. Martin even includes some personal history with the band like riding home on his bike from the record store with Let There Be Rock tied to the back. What are his favorite 3 AC/DC albums? What does he think their legacy is? We have a fun chat with Martin and he even indulges our questions about an article he recently wrote for Goldmine on supergroups. When she started playing guitar at age seven, Sunny War saw herself as the next Slash or Angus Young, a future shredder, certain to be a rock star, and definitely NOT a folk singer. And yet, here we are, it's 2023 and thanks to her excellent latest album, Anarchist Gospel, and a Triple A-radio hit single, "No Reason," she is finally getting well-deserved recognition as one of the most exciting folk singers of her generation. In episode 89 of the LSQ podcast, get to know Sunny's story, and how she went from playing in a punk band called Anus Kings and busking on the Venice Beach boardwalk to performing her ecstatic folk anthem "No Reason" on late night television and embarking on her biggest tour, to date. In the 1980s, AC/DC's biggest fan was a notorious serial killer. The band was an international best-selling hit machine, and members like the late Bon Scott and die-hard Angus Young became rock icons. But when the press caught wind of the disturbing fandom of the serial killer Richard “The Night Stalker” Ramirez, the news quickly dragged the world's most fun, pure rock ‘n' roll band straight down the highway to hell and into the center of a media firestorm around Satanic Panic and the inspirations of a murderer. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including graphic depictions of violence and sexual assault.
