CJ Plain has been eager to break down a favorite album for a long time, and we're making it happen this week in our chat lab. 2018's "Some Tough City" by former Rainbow keyboardist Tony Carey paints a hard rocking view of the streets, crimes and tent cities of East LA. Merging sounds sure to please fans of guitar-centric bands like Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick and Queen into a unique arena rock blend, Carey turns his experience with such legends as Ritchie Blackmore into a gem of his own. #Rainbow #tonycarey #ritchieblackmore #sometoughcity #coldwarkids #reachout #antisocialnetworkYUH Theme by David T and Mojo 3https://www.amazon.com/Insanity-Sobri...Some Tough City by Tony Carey on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/album/5xOXMBMX8vMT86wtTR9Z2o?si=QeDTSWIYQKObyIyhNrYESwThe Loud List on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/4C0llQ13OnXKezsMqKVPqyThe Noize Report on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/4nwjAECkWeJJd5tfjjkgQuAnti Social Network on Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1NrDN795E7qwmKL5wS6z7wYeah Uh Huh Social Stuff:Yeah Uh Huh on TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@yeahuhhuhpodYeah Uh Huh on Facebookhttps://facebook.com/YeahUhHuhPodYeah Uh Huh on Twitterhttps://twitter.com/YeahUhHuhPodYeah Uh Huh on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l716ljEQLeMMxwihoS?si=27bd15fb26ed46aaYeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yeah-uh-huh/id1565097611Yeah Uh Huh Website:https://yeah-uh-huh.wixsite.com/yeahuhhuhpod

Ritchie Blackmore is known as a guitar legend and as one of the more mercurial figures in rock. The Rock N Roll Hall Of Famer rose to power with Deep Purple and unleashed some of the most classic, hard rock riffs on the world, including the simple and ever-present Smoke On The Water. But Ritchie was known to be aloof, distant from his bandmates and would often fly into critical rages about their performance. After the departure of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, he was dissatisfied with the musical direction of the band. However, once he saw a diminutive American singer opening for Purple in a band called Elf, he started to devise a way out of DP. That singer was Ronnie James Dio, the powerhouse lead vocalist who would eventually move on to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath (and record two killer Sabbath albums, Heaven And Hell & Mob Rules) and fill arenas in the 80s with his own band, Dio. After recording what was supposed to be two sides of a single, Ritchie knew that Ronnie was his ticket out of Purple and onto his own project. So with his bandmates from Elf, they recorded Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow showcasing Ronnie and showing the world the Ritchie still had the goods. Songs like Man on the Silver Mountain and Snakecharmer are built on the power of Ronnie's soaring vocals and Ritchie's heavy riffs. But songs like Catch The Rainbow show an almost proggy, fantasy side of the band as well as Temple of the King and Sixteenth Century Greensleaves. Of course, before the first tour Ritchie fired or scared off the remaining members of Elf to replace them with Jimmy Bain and Cozy Powell which led to a triumphant Rising the next year. But to celebrate the real worldwide introduction of Ronnie James Dio (he appeared on albums with Elf but they received nowhere near the exposure of working with Blackmore) at 50, we reminisce on how we discovered Ronnie, Rainbow and it's legacy today. Hey now, music lovers. Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives. I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today, my guest is the legendary guitarist, performer and band-leader Jamie Holka. As a musician whose name is mentioned in hushed, reverential tones by his peers, Jamie has earned a reputation as a virtuosic guitarist and a fearless improvisor, whether he's playing blazing electric blues, fiery progressive rock, or effortlessly hip finger style jazz. The Niagara Falls native is well-loved across the Western New York region, but he's also caught the attention of many of the finest musicians he grew up revering. That's how he ended up as an influential member of the rekindled 1970s progressive rock/jazz fusion ensemble Captain Beyond, with whom Jamie performed between 2017 and 2020. And that's also how he befriended the brilliant rock drummer Bobby Rondinelli, a veteran of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Blue Oyster Cult, among many others. Jamie and Rondinelli teamed to create The Gathering, a new album of guitar-centered instrumentals that features heavy input from legendary guests like Deep Purple keyboardist Don Airey, and iconic bassists Billy Sheehan and Kenny Aaronson. Jamie, Rondinelli, Aaronson and friends will celebrate the release of The Gathering with a show at The Cave, 71 Military Rd in Buffalo, on Friday, June 6, at 7 pm. During our chat, I asked Jamie about the genesis of his love for the guitar, how it feels to be making music with his childhood idols, and what it means to be an eternal student of music.

Guest: BullAngus bandleader Larry LaFalce In this epysode, we take a deep dive into BullAngus' 1971 self-titled album, a raw and heavy classic rock gem that has long been overlooked. Featuring exclusive commentary by band leader Larry Lafalce, we explore the creation of the album, the band's unique sound, and the impact it had on the rock scene of the early '70s. Plus, hear why Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore once called LaFalce "a mother***er"(!!) and get firsthand insights into the tensions and triumphs that defined this iconic era of rock history. In this episode of Talk2TheHand, we dive into the wild and eccentric life of Screaming Lord Sutch, the rock 'n' roll pioneer who became one of Britain's most notorious political pranksters. From his early days fronting the horror-infused rock band The Savages to his countless bids for public office as the leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party, Sutch carved out a career that was equal parts music, mischief, and madness. But behind the flamboyant costumes and outlandish policies was a man with a deep love for shaking up the establishment. We'll explore his influence on the British music scene, where he rubbed shoulders with legends like Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, and Keith Moon. Despite never landing a chart-topping hit, Sutch's theatrical stage presence and macabre-themed songs left an undeniable mark on rock history. His early performances, featuring coffins, skulls, and bloodcurdling screams, predated the shock-rock antics of Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne by years, making him one of the genre's true pioneers. Of course, no discussion of Lord Sutch would be complete without delving into his political escapades. With policies ranging from mandatory pogo sticks for public transport to opening pubs for 24 hours, his satirical campaigns mocked the rigidness of British politics while endearing him to the public. But was he just a joke candidate, or did his absurdity hold a mirror up to the establishment? We'll examine the legacy of the Monster Raving Loony Party and how its spirit lives on in modern political satire. Beyond the larger-than-life persona, we'll also discuss the struggles that plagued Sutch later in life. Despite his public bravado, he faced personal demons, battling depression and financial difficulties. His tragic death in 1999 shocked fans and left many wondering about the toll of a lifetime spent in the limelight. Was his eccentricity a shield, or was he truly the eternal optimist he portrayed? Join us as we celebrate the highs, the lows, and the sheer lunacy of Screaming Lord Sutch—a man who blurred the lines between rock, politics, and performance art like no other. Whether you know him as the original shock rocker or Britain's most loveable political rebel, this episode is a deep dive into the unforgettable world of one of the UK's greatest cult figures. It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. In this special crossover episode, we're spotlighting Buffalo's 1973 Volcanic Rock—a raw, proto-metal gem that helped shape the sound of 80s Metal and 90s Rock. With primal riffs and fearless energy, Buffalo laid the groundwork for the heaviness embraced by bands like Metallica and Soundgarden. Picture it: the airwaves dominated by Dark Side of the Moon, Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, and Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Rock was entering its teenage years, shedding its innocence for something darker, more primal. Halfway around the world, Australia was a raw, untamed frontier where danger lurked in every shadow. Venomous creatures, desolate outback stretches, and a wild, unrelenting spirit shaped the people and their art. It was here, in this harsh and unpredictable landscape, that Buffalo unleashed their sophomore album, Volcanic Rock, on Vertigo Records. Like the searing sun, it scorched a path for heavy music, standing defiantly alongside its better-known contemporaries.Buffalo was no Zeppelin or Sabbath knockoff. This Brisbane-to-Sydney transplant created their own blend of bluesy grit and proto-metal menace. Formed initially as “Head,” their pivot to Buffalo was guided by a manager who believed that bands starting with “B” (Beatles, Beach Boys) were bound for success. A dart on a map landed on Buffalo, and thus began a name and sound etched in volcanic fury.Heavy as Hell, Raw as the OutbackVolcanic Rock lived up to its name—primitive, thunderous, and unpredictable. With Dave Tice's raw vocal delivery leading the charge, and guitarist John Baxter's primal riffage painting sonic landscapes, the album combined blues-rock roots with a proto-doom intensity that felt otherworldly. Songs like “Freedom” deliver nine-minute odysseys, meandering through psychedelic jam territory before crashing back into riff-laden crescendos.Yet, the record wasn't just music—it was spectacle. Its controversial cover art—a volcano shaped like a female torso spewing lava—reflected the wild creativity and raw edge of the band's ethos. It was shocking then and remains iconic now, an image as bold as the sound within.Misfits in a Golden AgeDespite their innovative sound, Buffalo never quite broke through. Opening for heavyweights like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, they faced the mischief of tour mates like Ritchie Blackmore, who infamously sabotaged their set. Still, they soldiered on, creating an album that influenced generations of grunge, stoner rock, and doom metal—long before the labels existed. But Buffalo's story is also one of commercial failure and creative frustration. Pushed by their label to pivot toward radio-friendly fare, they resisted, choosing instead to blaze their own trail. By the time their final album, Average Rock 'n' Roller, hit shelves in 1977, the band was running on fumes. Yet, Volcanic Rock remains their defining statement, a timeless blueprint for heavy rock adventurers. The Legacy: Why Volcanic Rock Still MattersSo why revisit Volcanic Rock in 2025? Because it's an artifact of pure, unadulterated rock energy—a raw, imperfect gem that prefigures everything from Kyuss to Queens of the Stone Age. Its primal simplicity, coupled with its audacious ambition, captures the essence of a time when rock was still dangerous.Want to know more? Graham Bonnet in conversation with David Eastaugh English rock singer. He has recorded and performed as a solo artist and as a member of several rocks bands including Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz, and Impellitteri. He is known for his powerful singing voice but is capable of also singing soft melodies. In 1979, Bonnet was approached to join Sweet to replace Brian Connolly. However, he was chosen by Ritchie Blackmore to replace Ronnie James Dio as the vocalist of hard rock band Rainbow. This was something of a musical departure for Bonnet, who had previously identified himself more as an R&B singer. Bonnet would later credit his time in Rainbow and his collaboration with Blackmore, in particular, as fundamentally changing his musical outlook to a more hard rock focus. He sang on the Down to Earth LP, which would become his most successful album. It spawned two hit singles in 1979 and 1980: "Since You Been Gone" and "All Night Long". During Bonnet's time in the band, Rainbow also headlined the inaugural Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park, Castle Donington.
From Ozzy Osbourne to Black Label Society to Zakk Sabbath to, most recently, his stint filling in for his old friend “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott in Pantera, Zakk Wylde has left an unmistakable mark on the hard-rock and metal music worlds. Fresh off performing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Cleveland Browns game in October, and paying homage to his boss Ozzy at the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Wylde joins this episode of Shred With Shifty to share his teachings from the book of rock. When he was learning to play, Wylde studied Frank Marino, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin along with Sabbath shredder Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, and “King Edward”—Eddie Van Halen—but Osbourne's original right-hand guitar-man Randy Rhoades was top of the crop. Little did Wylde know he'd go on to replace him after his tragic death, following up the work of Rhoades, Brad Gillis, and Jake E. Lee. He got to join his favorite band, but it wasn't an easy gig. “What's expected of you as an Ozzy player?” says Wylde. “The bar that Randy set was lights out.” After a quick pinch-harmonics tutorial, Wylde lays out how he used a Marshall JCM800 and Boss SD-1 with his “holy grail” bullseye Gibson Les Paul Custom to track the alternate-picking intensive on “Miracle Man,” a mix of “ingredients” from all the players Wylde loves. (“Pass the Ritchie Blackmore, boss!”) For those thinking of skimping and swapping in some hammer-ons and pull-offs, Shifty warns: “There are no shortcuts! Pick every note!” Along the way, Wylde discusses the inner workings of his tenure with Osbourne, including being the longest-running player in the group—like “working at the deli,” according to Wylde. And tune in to hear about Wylde's relationship to Ozzy's wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, who he refers to as “mom”—a role she performed well when she busted him at a nightclub while he was underage. This week we respectfully welcome back to the show Slamfest Podcast host: Mad Brad Rusthoven. He has called us out on a grave mistake of not having played Black Country Communion on any of our recent New Wave Of Classic Rock episodes. Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistakes: BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION Shoulda Been Huge”… scratch that: Should BE Huge!!! Celebrate this amazing supergroup with us. Apologies for a little hiss and background noise in the episode (our crack staff must have been smoking crack again). This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we mentioned before on the show and played an offshoot band from them. They contain some household names in classic blues and rock and have a hell of a pedigree, but unfortunately, their brilliance has yet to be recognized to the degree that it truly deserves. This is the bastard child of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin for the love of Lemmy! We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… Songs this week include:Black Country Communion - “Beggarman” from Black Country Communion (2010)Black Country Communion - “The Outsider” from 2 (2011)Black Country Communion - “The Great Divide” from Live Over Europe (2012)Black Country Communion - “Midnight Sun” from Afterglow (2012)Black Country Communion - “Sway” from BCCIV (2017)Black Country Communion - “Stay Free” from V (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

This week, we manage to talk about 7 songs in just over 2 hours - appropriately, all are versions of "Train Kept a Rollin'"! The original is by Tiny Bradshaw, a 1951 jump blues number that contains a rock n roll instro break that clearly caught the ears of the next crew, namely Johnny Burnette & The Rock n Roll Trio. They take Tiny B's joyous number and inject it with some wild hillfolk hiccupin' and hollerin'.' The train somehow made it to England by 1965, and Screamin' Lord Sutch (with Ritchie Blackmore) left the station at a fevered pace, but later that same year, The Yardbirds caught up. Keith Relf and the boys even did a follow-up rendition for the movie Blow Up which they titled "Stroll On," but the lyrics are super stoopid! We close off the episode with two garage versions that take passengers to places far off the usual route - dig The Rogues (these ones from Buffalo) and Steve Walker and The Bold and their hyperspeeds! Real gone!!!Screamin' Lord SutchThe Yardbirds (TKAR and "Stroll On")The RoguesSteve Walker and the Bold
Movie theaters are preparing for this year's gross out, make people sick movie for Halloween and it's called Terrifier 3...and someone has been scamming money from people by pretending to be Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore!
Patrick returns to Musical Chairs as the guys cover two more epic bands from the pages of rock's history book. For several weeks now, Patrick has made it known that he planned on covering Alice In Chains for his next band, and that would come to pass with this Episode. Formed in the late 80s, Alice In Chains rose to rock prominence in the early 90's with some of the most iconic songs from that entire era. Despite losing one of the most recognizable frontmen of that time frame (Layne Staley), the band has forged on and is still making great music to this day. Dave, on the other hand, covers Rainbow. After leaving Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore created Rainbow, and despite an ever-changing lineup of singers and band members, Rainbow certainly left its mark and became a staple of the early days of MTV. It's another great installment of Musical Charis that you won't want to miss.Today's hosts: Dave Ungar (@AttitudeAgg) and Patrick O' Dowd (@WrestlngRealist)Episode 5 of Season 4 of Musical Chairs focuses on Alice In Chains & RainbowAbout Chairshot RadioThe rebirth of Chairshot Radio will see a rotating cast of hosts delivering you a new show EVERY day.
https://youtu.be/nyav8Sk9Crc Exclusive Interview with Legendary Bob Daisley For over 50 years, bassist Bob Daisley has laid the foundation for some of the greatest rock and roll ever recorded. From blues and metal to ballads and progressive rock, Bob has worked with the biggest names in the music industry. Early Career At 21, Australian-born Daisley moved to London, joining Stan Webb's band Chicken Shack in 1972. In 1973, he joined Mungo Jerry, recording the hit single "Alright, Alright, Alright." Rise to Fame In 1975, Daisley co-founded Widowmaker, releasing two albums. In 1977, Ritchie Blackmore invited him to join Rainbow, featuring Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell, promoting the album Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. Blizzard of Ozz In 1979, Daisley met Ozzy Osbourne and formed Blizzard of Ozz with guitarist Randy Rhoads. Their debut album reached #7 in the UK charts and went platinum in the US, followed by Diary of a Madman in 1981, which also went platinum. Continued Success After parting ways with Osbourne, Daisley joined Uriah Heep and later rejoined Osbourne to record Bark at the Moon (1983). On the 53rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, rock journalist, author and fellow Pantheon podcaster, Martin Popoff review the 1981 rock album by Rainbow, "Difficult To Cure." Rainbow and was on its third incarnation by 1981. Rainbow was still led by one of the greatest guitarist of all time, Ritchie Blackmore. SIOL favorite Don Airey was still there on keyboards as was former bassist and chief lyricist, bassist Roger Glover. However, gone was drummer extraordinaire Cozy Powell and new singer Graham Bonnet, who only appeared on one album, the previously reviewed "Down To Earth", see Episode 25 of the Album Review Crew. Replacing Powell was American drummer, Bobby Rondinelli and replacing Bonnet, was another American, Joe Lynn Turner. JLT as he's known, gave Rainbow and even more commercial sound with his one of a kind melodic voice. Rainbow had come a long way from the Ronnie James Dio led Rainbow days. Ritchie wanted a more commercial band that could break through in America. Difficult To Cure's melodic sound was evident on the opening track, "I Surrender," another Russ Ballard song. The album featured a mixture of melodic, classical, hard rock and pop songs. There were two instrumental a signature of Ritchie Blackmore. The songs "Can't Happen Here" & "I Surrender" also received video plays, during the early days of MTV. The album was produced by Roger Glover and was the highest charting album in the UK for Rainbow and went Gold in the UK. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 51 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. So tune in to hear to hear a battle on instrumentals, Martin's hilarious dry sense of humor and a wardrobe discussion about whether something rivals early Bon Jovi tight jeans. The influential British shredder talks about how he formed his playing style and demonstrates how to rip one of his most iconic leads. To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history. He and Shifty talk through Collen's formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and John Petrucci all played a hand in Collen's high-flying fretwork. How did Collen fit into the '80s arms race of speedy guitar playing? His participation might have had something to do with Thin Lizzy's Gary Moore. Collen's solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren't many tricks to Collen's sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the '80s. Click below to subscribe to the podcast!
