We're back in black… again! But in the place of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, in the place of Barry Sonnenfeld is F. Gary Gray and in the place of those New York-based besuited agents is MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL. Joining us to discuss the 2019 would-be franchise-rebooter is host and co-founder of Girls on Film podcast Anna Smith, and together we navigate the choppy production, the flattening Marvelisation of it all and the flickers of genuine chemistry that do end up making it through. Does Andy get to deploy ‘Nod Ya Head'? Listen to find out.You can follow Anna Smith on Instagram at @annasmithfilmcritic, and listen to her podcast Girls on Film wherever you get your podcasts. You can listen to The Robert J Hunter band's new single 'Left Me Yet' here: https://ffm.to/rjhleftmeyet And you buy tickets to their upcoming album launch show on October 10 here: https://events.talentbanq.com/events/talentbanq/2123808 Follow the podcast on Twitter, Bluesky and Instagram and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode! The year is 1980. The U.S. National Debt is a paltry $900 Billion, the word “yuppie” appears for the first time in print, the Pac-Man videogame is released in arcades everywhere, Mount St. Helens explodes in Washington state, and Cable News Network (also known as CNN) becomes a thing. In the world of metal, Iron Maiden release their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath reinvent themselves with new frontman Ronnie James Dio on vocals and release Heaven and Hell, and AC/DC regroup after the tragic loss of Bon Scott and release Back In Black featuring new vocalist Brian Johnson, an album that would go on to sell more than 40 million copies and become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Just as time and technology continued marching forward, the hard rock of the 70's continued its evolution into a new direction with a faster, heavier, and more aggressive sound beginning in 1980 that would become even faster, heavier, and more aggressive throughout the 80's. Get ready for a taste of “Something Haunted” from the “Necronomidonkeykongimicon” and find out why “you gotta watch for the flops” if you want to get in the spirit and enjoy the FIFA World Cup. Frank Castle returns, wreaking havoc on those who got it comin' in this action-packed, one-shot special on Disney+. Co-written by the man behind the skull himself, Jon Bernthal, One Last Kill finds Frank trapped in a high-rise tenement, dispatching bad guys after a bounty is placed on his head by an enemy with a personal score to settle. On the pod, we discuss how this special fits into the larger Punisher universe first established on Netflix, break down what works—and what doesn't—and spotlight a few of One Last Kill's guest stars, including a memorable appearance by Bernthal's own daughter. We also compare key plot elements in the special to The Raid 2 and debate how this version of the Punisher might fit into the MCU proper ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Spider-Noir es una historia de un Spiderman alterno en los 1930s. Well, you would have done well to heed Nicola Willis's warnings ahead of this Budget that there would be no spend-up, because there is no spend-up. There is no money for - well, there is money for the important stuff. You've got the schools and the classrooms, and the hospitals, and the Waikato Expressway, and Winston Peters' pet projects. But everywhere else, there is just no new money. It is tight. Now, that is exactly how it should be. And in fact, I would say this still doesn't go far enough. For the third Nicola Willis Budget in a row, it isn't tight enough because we haven't even hit our debt peak yet. We are still going up that peak mountain. That is still two years away, which means that interest payments are already at $9 billion and they're only going to go up. It's going to take us to about 2040, roughly, before debt is back to where Bill English left it as a proportion of GDP. And that is just the most optimistic scenario. The rest of the scenario is basically never getting back down to where Bill English left it. Nicola Willis is making a virtue today of the fact that she's getting the books back in black by 2028/29, which she says is earlier than expected. But that is a little bit of game-playing that's going on, because it was always going to be 2028/29 until December. Then in December it changed, then it became 2029/30. Now it's just been brought back again to where it was about six months ago. And that is only, by the way, because Nicola Willis is using a made-up measure, OBEGALX, which makes surplus appear a year earlier than the standard old measure, which basically would have had surplus arriving only in 2030 or thereabouts. And by the way, all of this is a broken promise, because Nicola Willis promised the country that if you voted for National at the last election, she would have the books back in the black. When? Today. This year. But after three Budgets, I think we've learned to temper our expectations on that front. Now, on the bright side though, she has decided to borrow $6 billion less than she had planned to. I will take that. And while there is a lot of poor spending that continues, at least there isn't new, more poor spending. And for that, I suppose you have to give the Budget a solid holding-pattern score of 6 out of 10. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Can you feel it? Summer movie season is rumbling down the tracks. And this week BFG Podcast host Neal Pollack puts his ear to the ground for the last major releases before the real blockbusters start.First up is Michael, the bizarrely popular Michael Jackson biopic that has the world forgetting how weird and sinister late-era Michael Jackson really was. This is a hero's origin story, from the beginnings of the Jackson 5 up until the near-tragedy of the "Victory" tour. Contributor Gillian Gaar joins Neal in breaking down why she thinks this movie is a flat highlight reel that doesn't really work, and compares it to other recent popular music biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody and Back in Black. Neal agrees with her mostly but really liked Colman Domingo as Michael's Machiavellian father, and has to admit the music scenes are pretty good.Stephen Garrett makes his regular stop to talk about The Devil Wears Prada 2, the sequel to a popular movie from the fashion industry from 20 years ago. Our critics agree that this sequel seems flat and unnecessary and they get very bitchy talking about music and fashion, which is appropriate. Neal did like Justin Theroux as a Jeff Bezos-style billionaire magnate weirdo, and Emily Blunt is also pretty funny in the sequel. But most of the goings-on are pretty annoying.Neal and Stephen clash on The Christophers, a Steven Soderbergh indie joint about the London art world. Soderbergh, who is 63, claimed to have retired 13 years ago, Ian McKellen is 87 at the end of this month and is not retiring any time soon. They agree that McKellen is wonderful as the lead, a dying 80-something former "Bad Boy" painter, and Neal tries unsuccessfully to persuade Stephen that Michaela Cole is NOT a film actress. They agree to disagree, as they always do.

"Back in Black" – The Song That Brought AC/DC Back to Life. The song "Back in Black" is proof that sometimes, the greatest art comes from the hardest moments. AC/DC took a devastating loss and turned it into something timeless — not by ignoring their grief, but by channeling it into something bold and alive. The song isn't just a rock classic, it's the sound of a band that refused to give up, and in the process, created history.

Send in your music story! We start where real hangouts actually start: life updates, side quests, and a Minecraft plan that gets weirdly serious. Chris and I break down our “civilizations” challenge with creative-mode rules, no item hoarding, no sneaky prep, and then a hard switch to survival where alliances matter. If you've ever turned a chill game into a competitive project with friends, you'll recognize the energy fast. Then we get to the main event: a Top 10 list of 80s songs that still hit hard today. We debate what makes a track timeless, argue taste, and dig into the stuff that keeps classics alive, big hooks, iconic intros, and riffs that are fun to play. Expect plenty of classic rock and pop culture staples like Take On Me, You Shook Me All Night Long, Billie Jean, Don't Stop Believin', Sweet Child O' Mine, Jump, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Livin' On A Prayer, Eye Of The Tiger, and of course Back In Black, plus a few movie soundtrack detours along the way.We also try a music game called “Opposite Song Titles,” and it collapses almost immediately, which somehow makes the back half even better. From there it turns into rapid-fire music talk, band trivia, and a deep dive into Queen and Brian May's guitar story. If you like music podcasts built on opinions, nostalgia, and actual laughs, this one is a solid ride.Subscribe for more, share it with a friend who still blasts 80s classics, and leave a review with your pick for the most unbeatable 80s song. Please check out our merch page! : https://hookandbridgepodmerch.printful.me/ Become part of our community! : https://www.patreon.com/cw/TheHookandBridgePodcastPremiumSupport the showPlease give us a quick rate and review. On the 74th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom & Zeus welcome back special guest, author, host of the new podcast 300 Favorite Albums & Hall Of Famer, James Campion, to review the 1967 classic Motown album From The Temptations "The Temptations With A Lot O' Soul." In 1967 the Temptations were hitting their prime with their "classic 5 lineup" just coming off their major breakthrough album Back In Black with their "classic 5" era lineup of singers, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Paul Williams. The Temptations With A Lot O' Soul made it to #7 on Billboard album charts and was their biggest selling album from their classic 5 era. The album featured hits like (I Know) I'm Losing You, All I Need, You're My Everything & more. The great Funk Brothers provided their music and Norman Whitfield writing and production was all over the album as usual. This album continued The Temptations unique one of a kind soul music and style. David Ruffin was solidified as the main lead singer, but valuable contributions and lead vocals was still provided by the other members. This was Zeus' pick and as usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. So tune in to find out all about Zeus' man crush on David Ruffin and why yesterday football stars from Tecmo Bowl and more like Warren Moon, Barry Sanders and Dennis Green make appearances! FULLY & COMPLETELY: REDUX"In Violet Light" - The Tragically HipEpisode Show Notes——————————————————————————————————Fully & Completely: Redux | "In Violet Light" - The Tragically Hip (2002)——————————————————————————————————Hey, it's jD here. Some albums don't just meet you where you are - they find you exactly when you need them. **"In Violet Light" is that record.** Released in June 2002, it's the one that pulled jD hard back into The Tragically Hip after a stretch of distance. And if you listen closely, it makes total sense why. This isn't a band trying to hold on - it's a band that has let go of every obligation and is just making music for themselves. **The result is one of the most quietly assured records of The Hip's entire career.**This week on Fully & Completely: redux, jD and Greg LeGros go track by track through "In Violet Light" - the eighth studio album from The Tragically Hip, recorded in the Bahamas with legendary producer Hugh Padham - and make the case that this record has no business being this good, this far into a career.——————————————————————————————————EPISODE OVERVIEW"In Violet Light" landed in a 2002 music landscape that included Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood to the Head," Queens of the Stone Age's "Songs for the Deaf," Beck's "Sea Change," and Broken Social Scene's "You Forgot It in People." The indie pop explosion was just beginning to blow the roof off Canadian music. The Hip were eight albums deep, the mainstream had largely written them off, and **they responded by making one of their best records.** No fat. No filler. Eleven tracks of lean, confident, beautiful rock and roll. The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas - the same studio where AC/DC recorded "Back in Black" and Bob Marley cut some of his most enduring work - with Hugh Padham, the producer behind the gated drum sound that defined the 1980s (Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," Sting's solo catalogue, The Police's "Synchronicity"). **jD and Greg break down why that combination - this band, this producer, this place - produced something genuinely special.**——————————————————————————————————TRACK BY TRACK HIGHLIGHTS**'Are You Ready to Love'** - The opener sets the whole album's thesis. jD hears the first verse as a direct response to the critics and mainstream fans who had written The Hip off. **"They're pulling the plug. They've got our whole dug." And then - the chorus arrives like a shrug and a fist at the same time: are you ready for love?** A great rock and roll song that doubles as a mission statement.**'Use It Up'** - Built on a lyric attributed to the booklet of a Raymond Carver collection, this is a track about seizing everything, wasting nothing, and making music for the love of it. Greg hears Radiohead's "OK Computer" in the verses and the Georgia Satellites in the chorus - **and somehow The Tragically Hip pull both of those things off in the same song.** A slow burn that rewards headphones.**'The Darkest One'** - jD turns up whatever he's listening to every single time this song starts. **"The wild are strong and the strong are the darkest ones - and you're the darkest one."** Greg calls it a safe place. A song about freedom of expression, comfort, and the strange intimacy of being fully understood. Don't let the Trailer Park Boys video fool you - this song could have broken them wide open.**'It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken'** - The centrepiece. The lead single. **Both jD and Greg pick this as their track of the record - the first time in the history of Fully & Completely that hosts have landed on the same song.** Named for a Canadian graphic novel by Seth and a phrase used by band staffer Molly Lorimer to describe life on the road, it's a song about mortality, aging, and the strange grace that comes when you stop fighting. Death is swirling all around it - and it's still one of the most uplifting things The Tragically Hip ever made.**'Silver Jet'** - The one that changes gears just right. Greg connects this song personally to the empty skies over the Danforth in the days after 9/11, and the feeling of the first plane cutting back through the silence. **A song about hope, fear, and the things that pull your gaze forward.** The wolves of Northumberland. An archipelago. A green star. Only Gord.**'Throwing Off Glass'** - Companion piece to 'Trick Rider' from "Phantom Power" - if that song is about his son, this one is about his daughter. A slow builder that rewards patience. **A soundscape that would fit comfortably on "Coke Machine Glow."****'All Tore Up'** - A great drinking rock and roll song. Dottie the bluegrass singer. Open concept. Getting a little happening with old friends. **No one else writes a lyric like this and makes it fit inside a song this well.** Turn it up.**'Leave'** - A waltz in 3/4 time. Beautiful backup vocals. A late-night phone call at three in the morning. **"You better be dying." And they were.** An emotional gut-punch that doubles as a permission slip - to leave a job, a relationship, a place that no longer fits.**'The Dire Wolf'** - A pseudo-history lesson disguised as a rock song. Tallulah Bankhead and Canada Lee, stars of Hitchcock's "The Lifeboat." Ann Harvey of Isle of Morts, Newfoundland, who rescued 163 shipwrecked souls in 1828. A poem called "Sea Surface Full of Clouds" by Wallace Stevens. **Greg pulls all of this from memory. It's an entire university lecture wrapped in six minutes of music that absolutely slaps.****'The Dark Canuck'** - The closer. Possibly the longest Tragically Hip song ever recorded at six and a half minutes. A time signature change halfway through. **Canadian soldiers as peacekeepers. Apple, Zippo, and Metronome as record labels. Jaws at the drive-in. The Dark Canuck playing second on the double bill.** Nobody at the drive-in is staying for it. And that's sort of the whole point.——————————————————————————————————WHY THIS EPISODE MATTERSThis is the album that brought jD back to The Hip in earnest - **the record that cracked open the second half of his relationship with this band.** It's also the episode where he and Greg pick the same song for the first time. And it's the one where jD, partway through discussing 'Leave,' pauses to talk about his mother. **Listen for that moment. It's what this podcast is for.**"In Violet Light" is a masterpiece with no business being this good eight albums in. And this episode earns every minute of its runtime. So there's that.——————————————————————————————————SOURCES & CREDITS• HipMuseum.com• This Is Our Life: The Tragically Hip in the 1990s (Michael Barclay)• "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken" - graphic novel by Seth• "Sea Surface Full of Clouds" - poem by Wallace Stevens• Ann Harvey of Isle of Morts, Newfoundland - historical record• Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas - production history• Raymond Carver - attributed quote in "Use It Up"——————————————————————————————————CONNECT WITH THE SHOW• Facebook: facebook.com/groups/tthpods• Instagram: @tthpods• YouTube: youtube.com/@tthpods• Email: tthpodcastseries@gmail.comThe Tragically Hip Podcast Series - Est. 2018#TheTragicallyHip #TheHip #InVioletLight #FullyCompletely #GordDownie #TragicallyHip #CanadianRock——————————————————————————————————Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/tthtop40/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Chipotle's negative sales year, Taco Bell's ongoing dominance, and the incredible growth in snacks. First up is Chipotle, which last week reported that its same-store sales declined 1.7% in 2025. CEO Scott Boatwright introduced a “Recipe for Growth” plan that has five steps to get the brand back in black, but the company also issued guidance for the year that shows it expects sales to be flat. Sam and Alicia discuss the unsurprising results and whether they think Chipotle's plan for growth — which includes increased usage of limited-time offers and demonstrating the brand's value proposition — will help reverse its fortunes. Next up is Yum Brands, which had mostly good results: Taco Bell continues to dominate in the QSR category, with its same-store sales up 7% in the latest quarter and evidence that it's taking market share from just about every other corner of the restaurant industry. Meanwhile, KFC enjoyed 1% growth — signs, perhaps, that its turnaround plan is working. Sam and Alicia discuss those positive results, but also dig into the myriad issues over at Pizza Hut, which saw sales decline last year and plans to close 250 units in the first half of this year. Finally, the editors turn their attention to snacks, which are enjoying a renaissance across the restaurant space and could drive continued disruption at brands big and small. For more on these stories:Chipotle unveils plan to ‘accelerate growth' after another negative quarterTaco Bell is taking market share from just about everywherePizza Hut is closing 250 U.S. locations in the first half of 2026
A listener threw down the gauntlet and we answered: Wax Wars, the ultimate rock album face-off. We're talking full-catalog giants and needle-drop staples—Fleetwood Mac versus Eagles, Zeppelin versus Floyd, The Who versus Queen, Clash versus Ramones, U2 versus R.E.M., and more—decided by a mix of song strength, cultural impact, and those stubborn memories that never leave. The fun isn't just in who wins; it's in how certain records force you to choose between a perfect side and a perfect song, between a life-changing first listen and the album that still works anywhere, anytime. We chart why Dark Side demands a full ride while Zeppelin IV shines in any shuffle. We revisit how Bohemian Rhapsody re-entered pop culture through a movie and stayed for good. We trace the shockwave of Nevermind, the summer-long dominance of Synchronicity, and the way Back in Black turned grief into an indestructible anthem machine.By the end, you'll have a fresh lens on classics like Abbey Road, Let It Bleed, Revolver, Pyromania, Blizzard of Ozz, and Elephant. You'll also hear why some albums are built for the long arc while others are engineered for constant replay. Jump in, keep score with us, and then tell us where we blew it and where we nailed it. This week we're bringing you a powerhouse series of episodes that celebrate some of the most formidable women to ever take the mic on Second Act Stories. These conversations are fueled by bold decisions, hard-won confidence, and the kind of reinvention that only comes after you've lived a little. From breaking the rules to rewriting the script, these women didn't just pivot; they claimed their second acts with clarity, grit, and momentum. Whether you're a longtime listener or tuning in for the first time, these episodes capture the fire at the heart of our show: fearless choices, earned wisdom, and stories that prove it's never too late to bet big on yourself. Stuckey's is a legendary and iconic thread in the fabric of Americana. Founded in Eastman, Georgia in 1937 by WS "Sylvester" Stuckey, Sr., Stuckey's grew into a roadside empire by the 1970s, with 368 stores in more than 30 states. Part of the charm that made Stuckey's so iconic were its ubiquitous billboards, more than 4,000 of them, which were dotted along U.S. highways. Stuckey's was an inextricable part of what became known as "The Great American Road Trip." Fast forward to 2019, Stuckey's was on life support. The brand had gone through hard times, and its former stand-alone locations, still identifiable by their teal blue roofs, were now relics of a bygone era. Some were abandoned and boarded-up; others became home to less-than-savory businesses. By this time the brand had changed hands multiple times and become an unprofitable line item on a bigger company's balance sheet. But Stuckey's was about to experience a surprising rebirth. In 2019, former Georgia legislator Stephanie Stuckey, a practicing attorney at the time, received a fateful phone call. Stuckey's, the brand started by her grandfather all those years ago, was up for sale. With no experience in running a business, 53-year-old Stephanie defied the odds (and the advice of virtually everyone she spoke to), cashed in her entire life's savings, and traded her future to buy back and revive the business bearing her family's name. Since then, Stephanie has become a legend in the business community. A perfect storm of scrappiness, shrewd business sense and passion, she's now a bone fide rock star with all the street cred to stage a successful turnaround. And she has the receipts to prove it. Under Stephanie's leadership, Stuckey's and its flagship pecan log rolls are back in black. In this episode, Stephanie discusses growing up with an iconic last name, her career as a legislator and attorney, her decision to lay it all on the line to buy back her family's business, how she's rebuilt the brand, and what's next for Stuckey's. Stephanie chronicles her life on the road at her Instagram account, @stuckeystop. Her new book, "UnStuck: Rebirth of an American Icon," is available at Amazon or wherever you buy books. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. A double tap on the new and improved Incus and the usual chasm of James's pop culture knowledge, followed by a few old and familiar friends, as our May 2025 adventures come to an end.
We roll into our 80s hard rock showdown, where we put ACDC's Back in Black, Van Halen's 1984, and Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction under the brightest light we know: track-by-track comparison. Jump meets It's So Easy; Panama squares off with Nightrain; Hot for Teacher tangles with Paradise City. The fun isn't just the score—it's how those matchups rewire your nostalgia. From there, we zoom in on live recordings that changed how we hear legends: Elton John's 1970 trio storm on 17-11-70, and The Doors' final Jim Morrison concert, a difficult night for him by all accounts, that closes on the aptly chosen "The End."Minute with Jimmy unwraps the shockingly modern birth of Little Richard's Tutti Frutti—those opening syllables were a drum part first—and why 1955 still sounds like tomorrow. We close on the Jim Carroll Band's People Who Died, a song that once felt like pure punk adrenaline and now reads like a roll call of lives that shaped us. If you love rock history, live albums, and the way songs become landmarks, you'll feel right at home.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldIf you enjoyed the show, follow, rate, and share it with a friend. “What's the one song that guarantees a bar fight—or at least a round of shots?” That's the question Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray tackle in this hilarious and surprising episode of The Ben and Skin Show. The crew dives into the Top 10 most-played bands on TouchTunes jukeboxes in bars across America, and the results will blow your mind. From ACDC at #1 (because nothing says pool and darts like “Back in Black”) to the shocking resurgence of Creed (“The Cowboys should book them for halftime again!”), this countdown is packed with nostalgia, laughs, and plenty of hot takes. You'll hear the gang debate why Nickelback secretly slaps when you're three beers deep, why Fleetwood Mac is the soundtrack for 2 a.m. stragglers, and how Lynyrd Skynyrd's “That Smell” might just be the anthem for bar brawls.

What's up everyone! This week I'm sitting down with Lydia Smith, and honestly, I'm blown away by this woman. She's one of the most consistently successful elk hunters I've ever met—killing big bulls year after year like it's no big deal. And here's the kicker: she's completely self-taught. No dad taking her out as a kid, no mentor guiding her through it. Just pure grit, determination, and an obsession with figuring it out. In this episode, Lydia breaks down her 2024 hunt where she spent 16 days solo in the backcountry chasing what she called "the growler bull"—a massive Idaho six-point that she'd been hearing bugle outside her tent for two weeks. We dive deep into her stalking tactics (spoiler: she barely calls at all), how she slow-plays opportunities most hunters would rush, and why she believes elk on public land are getting conditioned to human calling. But this conversation goes way beyond tactics. Lydia opens up about the emotional weight of taking an animal's life, dealing with criticism for showing her emotions on camera, and some seriously intense experiences in the backcountry—including a moose attack at 17 that could've ended very differently. We also talk about what it takes to go solo as a woman in the mountains, building confidence through experience, and why she chooses to live a life centered around hunting even when it means sacrificing the conventional path. If you're someone who's grinding it out on public land, trying to learn this game without a mentor, or just want to hear from someone who's mastered the art of patience and persistence in the elk woods, this episode is for you. Lydia's story is proof that you don't need anyone's permission or guidance to become exceptional—you just need to refuse to quit. OnX Hunt - The ultimate hunting app just keeps getting better. Timestamps 00:00 - Intro 03:45 - Lydia's background: Self-taught and starting at 18 08:30 - The 2024 hunt setup: 16 days solo in the backcountry 12:15 - "The growler bull" - Two weeks of hearing him bugle 18:20 - The perfect storm and the final stalk 24:40 - The two-hour chase and getting within range 28:50 - The shot and the agonizing overnight wait 32:10 - Finding him 300 yards away 35:45 - Why this bull was so special 38:20 - Solo hunting: The magic and the terror 42:00 - Her second bull story: Watching him take his last breath 46:15 - Dealing with criticism for showing emotions 50:30 - The moose attack at 17 and other backcountry close calls 54:20 - Her stalking philosophy: Why she barely calls anymore 58:40 - Daily tactics and being strategically patient 1:02:15 - Hunting new areas vs. local knowledge 1:04:30 - Outfitting business info and closing thoughts Three Key Takeaways Strategic Patience Beats Aggressive Calling on Pressured Elk - Lydia has found that on heavily hunted public land, elk are becoming conditioned to human calling and often respond negatively. Her approach focuses on silent stalking, using terrain and wind to her advantage, and only calling when she's within 75 yards of a herd bull. She'll pass on opportunities if the wind isn't perfect, understanding that pushing elk prematurely can blow them out of an area entirely. Time is the Ultimate Advantage in Public Land Elk Hunting - Lydia spent 16 days in the backcountry on this hunt, and she emphasizes that consistent success on public land archery elk requires dedicating serious time. She believes out-of-state hunters with only 5 days have less than a 10% success rate. The ability to wait for the perfect conditions, study elk patterns over multiple days, and be in position when everything aligns is what separates consistent success from occasional luck. You Don't Need a Mentor to Become Exceptional - Lydia is completely self-taught, starting elk hunting at 18 with no family background in it. She ate four or five tags before killing her first bull, learning entirely through trial and error, scar tissue, and refusing to quit. Her story proves that while mentorship is valuable, pure determination, willingness to learn from mistakes, and putting in the days can make you just as deadly in the mountains.

Mark Ronson (Night People: How to be a DJ in 90s New York City) is a Grammy and Academy Award-winning producer, songwriter, and DJ. Mark returns to Armchair Expert to discuss feeling the full circle moment returning to vinyl after coming up as a DJ in the 90s, the tangible difference between experiencing the sounds of records versus digital media, and not playing his own records because he wants to earn the crowd on merit. Mark and Dax talk about having a vague memory of Robin Williams waking him up as a child during one of his parents' parties, launching soggies from the 10th floor with Michael Jackson, and the lovely memory he created playing Wonderful Tonight during his mom and stepdad's wedding. Mark explains gigging at the holy love child of Broadway camp and total Times Square sleaze, the breakthrough moment he changed everything by mixing Biggie's The Benjamins with ACDC's Back in Black, and being so grateful he developed his craft in the era where you had to physically hunt down records to sample.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts.
