American girlfriend of Sid Vicious

Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong explores the disturbing case of Sid Vicious and the unsolved murder of Nancy Spungen. On the morning of October 12th, 1978, Nancy was found stabbed to death on the bathroom floor of Room 100 at New York City's legendary Chelsea Hotel — and the only suspect was the man she loved. Candice examines how two profoundly damaged people, bound together by trauma, addiction, and a relationship built on destruction, collided in a way that left one of punk rock's greatest mysteries permanently unsolved.Audible subscribers can listen to all episodes of Killer Psyche ad-free right now. On February 2, 1979, Sid Vicious — the sneering, self-destructive bassist of the Sex Pistols whose reckless persona became synonymous with the chaos and nihilism of punk rock — died of a heroin overdose in New York City at the age of 21, just months after the stabbing death of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, at the Chelsea Hotel. Together, Vicious and Spungen embodied the darkest extremes of the late-1970s punk movement: volatile, addicted, fiercely codependent, and consumed by a relationship that blurred the line between love and mutual destruction. Spungen, a deeply troubled young woman drawn to the underground music scene, became both muse and scapegoat within punk culture, while Vicious's meteoric rise from London misfit to international antihero masked profound instability beneath the sneer and swagger. Their tragic spiral through violence, fame, and heroin addiction culminated in one of rock history's most infamous deaths, cementing the pair as enduring symbols of punk's seductive rebellion and catastrophic excess. Nancy Spungen was a groupie and major figure of the 1970's punk rock scene. Her tumultuous relationship with Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols became so infamous that “Sid and Nancy” has become a moniker for bad romances. Their relationship was characterized by drug abuse, violence, and codependence, and ended with Nancy's murder in their shared hotel room. In this episode, Lena and Alissa discuss the controversies surrounding Nancy's death, her early years as a bad teenager, and being labeled “annoying.” This episode was first published on 07/08/2021. LISTEN WITHOUT ADS ON PATREON! www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Dopey Episode Summary This Week on Dopey! We open the show in full single-dad chaos mode—juggling pickups, tutoring, dance class, concerts, naps gone wrong, and trying to make it home in time for the Knicks game. He announces the upcoming Dopey Recovery Short Film Festival, then reads an extremely heavy anonymous listener email about sexual compulsion, addiction, shame, and finding support through SLAA. The episode then shifts into classic Dopey mode with a wild voicemail involving cocaine psychosis, being naked with a fork, a pheasant-feather hat, and a guy selling condoms on campus. We dives into Spotify and Patreon comments from the Andy Dick episode, reading praise, criticism, jokes, sobriety milestones, and fan reactions. Then the show turns into the main event: a long, gritty, hilarious and vulnerable interview with Zoe Hansen. Zoe talks about growing up in wealthy but emotionally barren Chelsea, London, getting kicked out of school, discovering punk rock, heroin at 15, and moving to New York at 17. She describes working in hair and nightlife before entering the sex industry to support her habit, eventually becoming a seasoned brothel worker and heroin addict in late-80s Manhattan. She tells incredible stories about brothel life, clients, police raids, methadone stash strategies, Lower East Side heroin stamps, speedballing in Hell's Kitchen, dying briefly after a cocaine overdose in the Chelsea Hotel, waking blind, and living in the room where Nancy Spungen died. Zoe also reflects on spirituality, trauma, recovery, old New York, and writing her memoir Going Down in Gotham. A true Dopey legend episode. On the morning of October 12, 1978, the Chelsea Hotel looked like it always did after a long New York night, with its hallways dim, its air heavy, and its secrets still clinging to the walls, but behind the door to Room 100, one of the most infamous mysteries in rock-and-roll history was waiting to be found. Inside, twenty-year-old Nancy Spungen lay bleeding on the bathroom floor, her life ended by a single stab wound, while just feet away, her boyfriend—Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious—stumbled through the room in a haze of drugs, shock, and confusion. What happened in those final hours would become more than a tabloid scandal or a punk-rock tragedy; it would become a case suspended somewhere between love story, crime scene, and cultural collapse, where every witness had a different version, every answer seemed to raise a darker question, and the truth, if anyone ever knew it, may have died inside that room.SOURCES: 1) "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored History of Punk" by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain2) "Why We Love the Chelsea Hotel" -- The New York Historical Society3)Punk Rock Romeo and Juliet: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen -- Crime Library4) Sid Vicious Accused of Murder -- Rolling Stone5) Flashback: Nancy Spungen Found Dead at Chelsea Hotel -- Rolling Stone6) The Arrest of Sid Vicious -- History Daily Podcast by Wondery7) Sid Vicious Biography Page8) Sid and Nancy: A Punk Mystery -- The Independent9) 16 Truly Disturbing Moments That Made Punk Rocker Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols Live Up to His Name10) My New York: Sid and Nancy -- The New York Post

In the wake of their final show, the Sex Pistols split, torn apart by addiction, betrayal, and manipulation. John Lydon returned to London, disgusted. Steve Jones and Paul Cook escaped to Rio to record with fugitive Ronnie Biggs. And Sid Vicious, already spiraling, began his final descent in New York. This is the tragic coda to punk's most dangerous band. From the Chelsea Hotel to Rikers Island, from a heroin-induced coma to an infamous murder charge. The Rise and Fall of Sex Pistols ends here, in blood and handcuffs, and headlines. In this final episode, Gina Birch and Steve Lamacq reflect on the cultural earthquake the Pistols triggered, the lives they changed, and the price they paid.Featuring archive interviews from: Nancy Spungen, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren and Sid Vicious alongside a new interview with Jah Wobble, childhood friend of Vicious and Lydon.Presented by Gina Birch and Steve Lamacq Written by Philip Smith, with additional writing by Steve Lamacq Produced by Angela Davies and Philip Smith Editor for BBC Audio Helen Hobday Assistant Producer for BBC Nariece Sanderson Commissioner for BBC Music Will WilkinA BBC Audio ProductionThe producers wish to thank all the contributors and archive interviewers and interviewees.
By the end of 1977, the Sex Pistols sat at the top of the UK charts… while simultaneously hitting rock bottom. Sid Vicious was imploding, his partner Nancy Spungen was fuelling the chaos and Johnny Rotten was growing disillusioned with Malcolm McLaren's toxic games.Still, the band pushed ahead with a final run of gigs, including an unexpectedly wholesome Christmas Day show for children of striking firefighters. No one knew it then, but it would be their final UK performance for two decades. Then came their first American tour. The Pistols were dropped into the heart of the conservative South. Sid carved into his own chest on stage and Rotten was nearly broken by paranoia. The tour descended into violence, vomit, and blood. And to the end, in San Francisco, with the band on its knees, Johnny Rotten stared down the crowd and asked: “Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?” With a literal mic drop, he walked off stage, signalling the end of the Sex Pistols.Featuring archive interviews from: Nancy Spungen, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Malcolm McLaren, Sid Vicious, Sex Pistols' roadie Stephen 'Roadent' Conolly.Presented by Gina Birch and Steve LamacqA BBC Audio Production

The Chelsea Hotel sits at 222 West 23rd Street in Manhattan…since it was completed in 1884, the place has been a hangout for some very colourful characters…most were New York eccentrics and bohemians who needed a place to live…but it also attracted some famous people. At one point or another, it was home to sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke who wrote a big chunk of “2001: A Space Odyssey” in his room…later, Stanley Kubrick, the producer of the movie version of the book would stay there… Other long-term guests included photographer Robert Mapplethorpe stayed there…so did included beat writer Jack Kerouac, playwrights Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Sam Shepherd, actors Dennis Hopper, Uma Thurman, Elliott Gould, and Jane Fonda…plus, for extra colour, poets William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg—not to mention Andy Warhol and some of his crew. The Chelsea was also a favourite haunt of musicians…Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits, Jim Morrison, Jeff Beck, Joni Mitchell, Alice Cooper, the guys in Pink Floyd, and many, many others. But the most notorious floor was floor 1…it was designated the “junkie floor,” the place where guests with drug problems were placed so that staff could keep an eye on things… This was where ex-Sex Pistol Sid Vicious and his American girlfriend, Nancy Spungen checked in…they were given room 100. It was in that room Nancy died…it looks like she was murdered...but by whom? ...Sid was charged with killing her, but did he?. This is “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…and this time, it's the wild story of the death of Nancy Spungen and the questions that still remain decades later…around whether Sid Vicious actually did it.

Ils enchaînent leurs tubes, “God Save The Queen” ou “I Wanna Be Me”. Christmas has been and gone, it's roast dinner farts lingering like slush on the street as we pitch towards New Year's Eve, and our extended festive holiday in New York draws to an end with “Ghostbusters II”. A film in which Nancy Spungen predicts the end of days; Bill Murray seeks psychiatric help from his own brother; and, once more, New York is portrayed as a festering hotbed of aggression, with a toxic sludge running beneath its streets. Much like the subject of our previous episode - “Ghostbusters II” came too late to ride the seismic wave of popularity the original generated. Unlike “Gremlins 2”, however, it doesn't particularly offer anything new, with many noting the similar story beats to the first film. Oddly for a tale about negative emotions feeding supernatural events, it's also softer and less cynical in its outlook, presumably part of efforts to aim it more for the kids who had unexpectedly embraced the original. For those of us young enough, it still holds an affectionate place in our hearts as we finally got more “proper” Ghostbusters, but, as far as the studio was concerned, this failed to catch the lightning a second time, and any further talk of sequels were shelved for nearly thirty years. Whist not a patch on the original, but with interesting moments, good gags, exemplary effects and great additions to an already perfect cast, “Ghostbusters II” doesn't deserve the poor reputation it's had over the years. Today, J.G. have the distinct pleasure of interviewing a true icon of independent cinema, writer and director Alex Cox. Known for his distinctive style and rebellious spirit, Alex Cox has made a significant mark on the film industry with his unique vision and uncompromising approach to storytelling. Alex Cox first burst onto the scene in the mid-1980s with his cult classic (that we watched here on TIR movie night most recently) "Repo Man," a film that masterfully blends punk rock, science fiction and dark comedy. He followed this with the critically acclaimed "Sid and Nancy," a gritty and poignant portrayal of the tumultuous relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Throughout his career, Cox has consistently challenged conventional filmmaking norms, producing a body of work that is both provocative and thought-provoking. Today we will not only be discussing Alex's past works, but his latest vision, “My Last Movie”. My "last movie" is a Western version of Nicolai Gogol's "Dead Souls' '. According to Alex, Dead Souls, “..is a great book, full of irony, mystery and meaning.” Alex is once again bypassing Hollywood by starting a crowdfunding campaign. Wherever you are listening to or watching there is a link in the description to contribute. Join us as we sit down with Alex Cox, a maverick filmmaker whose work has left an indelible impact on the world of cinema. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his films, this conversation promises to be a fascinating journey into the mind of one of the most original voices in contemporary filmmaking. Today it is a luxury hotel, but when it began, this was one of the first forays into attracting the upper class to rent apartments in New York City. The interior was grand and the upper floors were specifically designed to attract artists. The hotel has stood for nearly 150 years and has not only provided housing for some unique people, but it hosts many spirits. These include punk rocker Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. We begin the 9th Annual Month Of Bev by chatting about a cult classic that features punks, Reaganomics and odd automobiles. Repo Man was Alex Cox's debut (Sid And Nancy came 2 years later) and it was also very early in Emilio Estevez's film career. The man who would basically stop acting in motion pictures about 15 years later is just okay here. He's joined in this sci-fi/comedy by veteran character actors like Tracey Walter and Harry Dean Stanton. The movie still touches Bev's Gen-X heart, despite a clunky middle section and an unsatisfying ending. This is a weird flick, but you have to admire that everyone involved embraces the weirdness. Well, maybe not Stanton. So drive your Chevy Malibu across the country---no matter what danger the trunk contains---and follow the code as our 560th pieces through Repo Man. To Be Clear...: Gary Oldman's co-star in Sid & Nancy is Chloe Webb (playing Nancy Spungen). Also, Sy Richardson WAS indeed one of the writers of Mario Van Peebles' Posse.
