Welcome back, readers! We are getting close to Christmas! This week we will be picking up our books and reading Chapter 14, A Tree-jan Horse. Decker, Tinsel, and Bulb were heading towards the power plant the last time we saw them. This chapter's title is what is called a play on words. There is a legend of a great army trying to take the city of Troy. The city walls were so fortified that the army could not get in. So, they devised a plan to trick the city. They built a wooden horse and hid some soldiers in it. Then, the army sailed out to sea just past the horizon so that it looked like they left. The city took the horse, a Trojan Horse, as an offering back into its fortified walls. At night when the city had fallen asleep, the soldiers snuck out and unlocked the gate letting the Spartan army into the city. I live where it is hot most of the year, but at this time of year, the weather changes and for a couple of months we have perfect weather for being outside and enjoying nature. I hope where you are, the weather is as nice as it is here. This week we will be picking up our books and reading Chapter 13, which is called Hitching a Ride. Last we were with X-mas, his Chomping doll companion Netty, and Rex, X-mas described to Rex how to travel to the North Pole using the Power Plant Teleportals. Chapter 12 is titled “An Encounter in the Woods”. An Encounter means that something or somebody unexpectedly comes across your path. The last time we were with Tinsel and Bulb, they had snuck across the neighborhood street and entered the woods on Halloween night! The last time we were with Ty and Xmas, they had joined their forces by forming an alliance. Today, we pick up where their conversation had left off - How to get to the North Pole. There are two big words in this title Voltaic and Exposition! Voltaic is a fancy word for electricity that is produced by batteries and Exposition in this sense is a description of something that is hard to understand. Sometimes words can mean multiple things. This can make it hard to follow along if you are looking at just one word - this is when we as readers use what is called Context Clues to identify which meaning of the word the author is using. Exposition can also mean a big demonstration of something, like a show or presentation. If you are comfortable, I invite you to visualize with me having our hands full like agent Decker. First, Let's close our books and close our eyes. With them shut, hold out your hands and make a bowl, like you are catching snowflakes. Imagine with me that these snowflakes represent our commitments, or struggles, or even our thoughts. As they flurry down endlessly from the boundless supply of the universe, they begin to stack upon one another. Now, can you see they are beginning to spill over our hands! These commitments that once fit so easily within the palms of our hands have compiled into too much for our hands to hold. Now that we can't hold anymore, it is time to give these snowflakes - whether they are ideas, or cares, or even problems - back to the universe. Are you ready? We will do this by breathing in through our nose a big deep breath. One that fills our lungs all the way to the tippy top. Now, let's blow those snowflakes away!!! Ooops, it looks like there is still one on my fingertips. How about yours? Let's just do that one more time as we prepare ourselves to relax. I wonder how Agent Decker gets her hands filled? Chapter 7: Reindeer Games Today we'll be reading the next chapter. This chapter is all about two reindeer that are going for gold! Chapter 7 is “Reindeer Games”. Remember in the song how Rudolph was never allowed to play with the other reindeer because he was different. Sometimes, others are different than us in their opinions, values, or even what they look like. When we are in an environment with others that are different than us, that is called diversity. Think of a beautiful field of flowers. Is that field only one color? There are blues and reds, whites and golds, purples with a blanket of different hues of green grass in my field. The Olympics come every four years and a diverse group of athletes from around the world competes to be the best in the whole world. Many overcome great challenges to say that anyone, from anywhere, can be the best at anything. As we read the next chapter, let's think about the great training and challenge that these reindeer must have had to endure….
