In this episode of the HVAC Know It All Podcast, host Gary McCreadie is joined by Jamie Kitchen, an HVAC expert, Training and Account Manager at Danfoss, to talk all about TX valves for heat pumps. Jamie breaks down how these valves work in both heating and cooling modes and why they need to handle refrigerant flow in two directions. They discuss the parts of a TX valve, how pressure and temperature control the flow, and why Danfoss uses stainless steel in their design. Jamie also explains how proper installation helps prevent common issues and why external equalizers are important in many setups. It's a must-listen for anyone working with heat pumps. Jamie Kitchen from Danfoss joins Gary to talk about TX valves used in heat pumps. Jamie explains how these valves control refrigerant flow when switching between heating and cooling. He breaks down how the valve parts work together, using pressure and temperature to open and close. They also talk about why heat pumps need special valves, and how check valves help flow in both directions. Jamie explains why Danfoss uses stainless steel bulbs and tubes to stop leaks and handle rough conditions. It's a helpful talk for techs who want to understand heat pump valves better and install them correctly. Jamie explains how TX valves in heat pumps work like traffic lights for refrigerants, letting it flow the right way in heating or cooling. He shows how the valve uses pressure from a sensing bulb, a spring, and the coil to open or close. Jamie and Gary talk about why using an external equalizer helps the valve work better, and how check valves let refrigerants move both ways. Jamie also shares why Danfoss uses stainless steel parts; they last longer and don't break or leak. It's a smart guide for techs who want to understand these valves and avoid system issues. Expect to Learn: How TX valves work in both heating and cooling modes. Why heat pumps need valves that flow in both directions. How pressure and temperature control valve opening and closing. Why using an external equalizer helps the valve feed right. How stainless steel parts make the valve last longer and stay leak-free. The Albany bulb is a beloved fixture of the East Bay shoreline. People visit for kite flying, dog walking and the culture of renegade art making. Today, we go out to the bulb with some former inhabitants to hear their story of a community that made the bulb a home.
Preserving the community and creative spirit of The Albany Bulb can be credited to one local group that stepped in when the future of the Bulb was uncertain.

This is The Digital Story Podcast #996, April 22, 2025. Today's theme is, "Night and Twilight Photography." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Daylight is great. The bulk of my photography happens when the sun is shining. That's also true for everyone else, however. So when I want to create something that's unique, and eye-catching, I wait for the sun to dip below the horizon. That's when the drama begins. I share some of my favorite tips for night and twilight photography on this week's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Glow, then choose Orton Effect in the submenu. Be sure to turn on Advance Settings to control softness, brightness, and warmth of the effect. Aside from being a terrific standalone app, Luminar is a powerful editing extension for Photos as well. The Orton Effect does a great job of counteracting digital over sharpening giving your night shots that magical look. Twilight Photography My favorite post-sunset shots are often while there's still color in the sky. I like the oranges and blues. And a great technique this time of evening is to work with silhouettes. For example, if you're in a popular place where folks are photographing the sunsets, such as Hawaii, step back from the crowd and get the people, trees, and other objects silhouetted against the colorful sky. It's often a far more interesting picture. Combining Live Photo and Night Mode This is a great technique if you have water in the scene. I combine Night Mode with Live View Long Exposure. Make sure Live View is turned on in the Camera App for the iPhone, then in Photos, choose Long Exposure from the Live menu. The effect can be quite impressive, especially considering that this is a handheld long exposure at night. Then apply the color correcting techniques I discussed earlier, plus a little Orton Effect, and you'll have a real winner. Live Composite on Olympus Cameras Live Composite is a high-tech version of Bulb mode, where the shutter stays open for an extended period of time, but you can watch the picture unfold before your eyes on the camera's LCD screen. This is particularly nice when you have moving lights in the scene. Begin by setting the camera to Bulb Mode. Then you can navigate to Live Composite. On the OM-3 you use the rear dial. Make sure the camera is steady, set your parameters, and watch the magic appear. Final Thoughts As much as I like the people and daytime landscape shots from Maui, I'm also loving the magic the twilight and night shots bring to the library. Seeing as it's now autumn, a number of bulbs can be planted in the garden. Here's a few of them: Tulip A fabulous early spring colour. There's some historical stuff with the Dutch making heaps of money out of often virus-ridden “varieties” (early 1600-s AD) selling them for Fl 3000.00 per bulb (while the average yearly wage of a skilled craftsman was around Fl 300.00) – the bulb bubble burst in 1637 AD. These days they are a bit cheaper and more reliable. They grow well in South Island with very cool winters – up north they need winter chilling (taking out of the soil and put in fridge for 8 weeks). In mild climates it pays to plant later in the year, in May or June. But in South Island, planting the bulbs can start in a few weeks; order them now! Great bulb outlets: Bulbs direct Garden Post NZBulbs Fiesta Bulbs Hadstock Farm in Springston Work the soil to 20 cm deep in sunny to semi-shade positions(bulbs prefer well-drained soils). Plant 15 cm spaced and 15 cm deep – in warmer climates, plant them a bit deeper (20 cm deep). A bit of mulch over the planting site will keep weeds down. Bulb fertiliser is recommended and after flowering, some blood and bone will feed the green leaves. Do NOT cut those green leaves after flowering: they gather sunlight (photosynthesis) for re-stocking the food reserves inside the bulbs underground. Narcissus Daffodils Prep the soil to 40 cm or so – daffodils' roots go way down! Plant them 10 cm deep and spaced to 10 cm apart. Well-drained soils work best – perhaps under deciduous trees. Hagley Park is a great example. Planting them in full sun is okay too. Mass planting works well, and the bulbs will come up year after year. They are not as fussy as tulips in terms of cool winter soils. Apart from the far north, the whole of New Zealand is daffodil country. Bulbs will multiply. Crocus: the lovely smelling spring flowers Plant the corms in autumn a couple of centimetres deep and closely-spaced for best effect – they are best lifted after the foliage dies down. Of course, Saffron is a crocus, but it flowers in Autumn (March). Leucojum, also known as snowflake It has a special place in my heart: we used to have a rare and endangered native species in the wetlands where I used to roam as a nature nerd in the Netherlands. Many different varieties now – flowering in early spring, planting in early April. Bulbs in containers Most of these bulbs do well in containers. Picture a terracotta pot with these plants massed together – you can shift them inside when they flower to enjoy, or put them on the patio so you see them through the ranch-slider. This week on The Garden Mixer, Leslie Harris, Marianne Willburn, and their guest, Scott Beuerlein from The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, continue to wrestle over the big topic of bulbs for the benefit of listeners who still have bags of obligation awaiting them in the garage. Big ones, little ones, early ones and late ones are discussed on their merits and – as Marianne is involved – their possible vulgarity. Sales are discussed. Vendors are endorsed. Scott once again endears himself to listeners by commiserating over post-bloom daffodil foliage, while Leslie issues judgement over braiding it, and offers alternatives. Meanwhile, Marianne talks about one of the problems of foliage that has nothing to do with looks but everything to do with successfully pairing bulbs with the rest of your garden. As usual, it's a fun and informative mix up of plants and points of view, with the promise of more sophisticated drinking choices in future episodes. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegardenmixer/support

In this week's episode of The Garden Mixer, Leslie Harris & Marianne Willburn stir up a spirited two-part discussion about all things bulb with their inaugural guest, Scott Beuerlein of The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Horticulture Magazine, and GardenRant. Whether you're going for naturalistic layers or the hypnotizing effect of thousands en masse, there's more than one way to make the most of what you've still got left to plant, and they've all three got an opinion over which is best. Scott and Leslie inevitably gang up on Marianne's design ideas and drink choices (even as Scott quaffs boxed red wine and admits some of his best displays are by accident); Marianne sexually harasses Leslie and snidely rejects her Bulb Spiral; and Leslie reveals her worst bulb planting mistake made while under the influence of inexperience (which they all agree is fairly common when you're just starting out). And what does a poached egg have to do with bulb planting anyway? Marianne thinks it makes for a profound analogy, even if Scott is irritatingly better at expressing it. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegardenmixer/support
