On the surface, you probably wouldn't immediately think of time travel when you think of Christmas stories, and yet there is a distinct connection which is hard to deny. Nor does it date to when Dr Who regularly began to deliver Christmas special episodes - it goes far further back than that. For the final episode in this year's festive selection, the dragons dive into why Christmas is the perfect setting for a time travel story. From liminal spaces where impossible deliveries take place in a single night to the chance to go back a right a wrong, learn from a mistake or take a missed opportunity, Christmas magic and temporal mechanics go hand in hand. Under the mistletoe this week - The Chronicles of St Mary's, A Christmas Carol, Torchwood and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic
In this special double feature Christmas Drive-In episode, hosts Christian Ashley and Evan Garcia are joined by former host Nick Polk to dive into a festive discussion about "South Park: Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" and "Phineas and Ferb's Christmas Vacation." They kick things off by pondering how the secular world celebrates Christmas, exploring the hilarious yet poignant social commentary in the South Park episode, which feels as relevant now as it did back in the day. Nick shares his fresh perspective on the Phineas and Ferb episode, revealing it as his first viewing, while the trio reflects on gift-giving and the true spirit of the holidays. With witty banter and clever insights, they navigate through nostalgia, culture, and the quirks of holiday traditions, all while keeping it light-hearted and fun. Christian Ashley, Evan Garcia, and former host Nick Polk dive into a special double feature Christmas Drive-In episode that explores the delightful chaos of two beloved holiday specials: South Park's 'Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo' and Phineas and Ferb's 'Christmas Vacation'. The trio brings a mix of nostalgia and witty banter as they dissect how each show approaches the holiday spirit. They kick things off with South Park, a show known for its sharp satire and irreverent humor, where they discuss the timelessness of its messages amidst the absurdity of Mr. Hankey, a literal piece of feces who embodies Christmas cheer. The conversation highlights how the show's commentary on societal issues feels eerily relevant today, making it clear that while the humor is crude, the underlying messages about acceptance and the absurdity of holiday commercialization resonate deeply. Transitioning to Phineas and Ferb, they revel in the show's charm and creativity, praising its ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments. They discuss the brothers' whimsical approach to Christmas, which emphasizes giving and the joy of togetherness over materialism. The crew appreciates how the show remains accessible to younger audiences while cleverly incorporating jokes that resonate with adults, creating a rich tapestry of humor that appeals to all ages. They touch on the significance of family, friendship, and the importance of creating memories during the holiday season, making their analysis both insightful and entertaining. Throughout the episode, laughter is abundant as they share personal anecdotes and reflections on their experiences with both shows, creating an engaging atmosphere that captures the true spirit of Christmas: joy, reflection, and a touch of nostalgia. As they wrap up, the hosts leave listeners with a shared sense of warmth and camaraderie, reminding everyone of the magic of the holiday season through the lens of two iconic animated series.Takeaways:Christian Ashley, Evan Garcia, and Nick Polk dive into the holiday hilarity of South Park's Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo, revealing its timeless commentary on modern-day Christmas chaos and cultural clashes.Nick Polk shares his fresh take on Phineas and Ferb's Christmas Vacation, offering insights into the show's unique blend of humor and heart, making it a must-watch for fans of all ages. The trio discusses the delicate balance between holiday cheer and the complexities of faith, touching on how South Park tackles themes of inclusion and exclusion during the festive season.Listeners are treated to a witty banter about the absurdities of Christmas traditions, including a discussion on...

The Christmas season has a way of filling our homes with warmth and wonder—but what if your holiday décor could do more than make your home look festive? What if it could become a beautiful, daily reminder of the Gospel for your family—and especially for your girl? In this special Christmas message, American Heritage Girls Founder & Executive Director Emeritus Patti Garibay invites listeners to rediscover the meaning behind the decorations we often unpack without a second thought. Instead of centering December around tinsel, lights, and checklists, this conversation encourages you to fill your home with symbols that point your daughter to the Savior who came near. Through thoughtful reflection and practical ideas, this episode explores how your family can create a holiday environment that disciples your girl right where she lives. Whether it's a nativity set placed intentionally, Scripture woven into ornaments, or simple traditions that direct your girl's heart toward Jesus, you'll find fresh inspiration to transform your décor into a teaching tool—one that speaks quietly but consistently of hope, promise, and God's redeeming love. As the busyness of December pulls our attention in a thousand directions, this episode gently reminds parents to anchor their home in truth that outlasts the season. When your daughter looks around the room, what does she see? May she see more than glitter and garland—may she see a family committed to celebrating Christ Himself. With encouragement that blends creativity, Scripture, and practicality, you'll walk away with ideas your family can use immediately and a deeper sense of purpose for the atmosphere you cultivate. Scripture References: Luke 2:10–11: The joyful announcement of Christ's birth. Deuteronomy 6:6–7: Impressing God's truths on the hearts of our children. Isaiah 9:6: The prophecy pointing to the coming Messiah. Three Things to Remember: Your décor can be more than beautiful—it can be a discipleship tool. Small, meaningful symbols can gently shape your daughter's understanding of Jesus. A Christ-centered home environment helps your girl see the season through the lens of truth, not culture. Visit raisinggodlygirls.com for more encouragement and faith-based parenting tools. Learn how to find or start an American Heritage Girls Troop in your community at americanheritagegirls.org.

Tinsel and Rust: How Hollywood Manufactured the Rust Belt (Oxford UP, 2025) tells the story of Hollywood's role in the shaping of the Rust Belt in the United States. During the 1970s and 1980s, filmic representations of shuttered auto plants, furloughed millworkers, and decaying downtowns in the industrial heartland contributed to pervasive narratives of American malaise and decline--informing the wider cultural view of these cities and their people. Author Michael D. Dwyer (Arcadia University) untangles the complicated relationship between Hollywood and the Rust Belt, exploring how the sociocultural image of the region has become a tool to tell stories about America's mythic past, degraded present, and potential futures.Dwyer offers a reading in twofold: through the conventional lens of film and cultural studies, and through an interdisciplinary lens that pulls in elements of cultural geography and urban studies to understand the ways in which Americans learned to interpret the cities and towns of the industrial Midwest. Each chapter spotlights a different Rust Belt city--Johnstown, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Detroit--and considers how films and filmmaking processes helped shape audiences' cultural understanding of those cities. Over the course of the book, Dwyer also examines several films which offer notable representations of the Rust Belt, including Slap Shot, The Blues Brothers, Major League, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and It Follows. Finally, the volume highlights how in more recent years, cities like Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Cleveland have all attempted to remake their public image and revitalize their economies through film and media production. Send us a textWe hit “Go Live” to close our longest season yet and lean into a simple truth: growth beats perfect. Holiday crunch time made the choice easy—pivot, try the new thing, and share what's working for educators and parents who want less noise and more clarity. We review the milestone that mattered most this year—CPD credits for listeners—so your professional learning can count toward recertification while you collect practical strategies you'll actually use.Across the season, AI literacy became a defining throughline. We highlight four standout conversations featuring innovators who make AI useful, ethical, and human-centered. From Endless Studios and its free pathway for students to build real portfolios, to teacher- and parent-friendly guidance on boundaries, citations, and transparency, we map a path from curiosity to confident use. You'll hear about Notebook LM for source-grounded studying that turns dense readings into clear summaries and audio explainers, Canva AI for building interactive learning games in minutes, and InstaLesson for drafting adaptable, standards-aligned lessons that save precious time.We also talk candidly about moving to video, why showing the unpolished version matters, and how small rituals—at school and at home—keep everyone steady when routines fall apart. Parents get practical advice on setting expectations and modeling ethical AI use, while teachers get permission to start small, iterate, and invite students to use tools responsibly rather than banning them. Innovation, we argue, is about people first and tools second; relationships and good judgment turn new tech into better learning.Season four launches January 15 with more conversations, more practical resources, and more human stories from the brighter side of education. This week, we're embracing the other side of the holiday season — the messy, awkward, unintentionally hilarious side. In this special episode of Monologuing, I share your wildest holiday horror stories and the worst gifts you've ever received. Think:
A Victorian Christmas looks cozy on greeting cards—glowing candle-lit trees, shimmering tinsel, children gathered around the fire. But behind the snow-globe charm was a season of deadly house fires, toxic decorations, poisoned sweets, and experimental electric lights that turned “old-fashioned Christmas” into a very real nightmare. In this episode of Terrifying & True, we dig into the true history of how festive traditions nearly burned homes to the ground, poisoned entire families, and forced the world to rethink what “safe” even meant.Inside this episode:Candle-lit Christmas trees as ticking time bombs: How dry fir branches, open flames, and flammable Victorian fashion created instant infernos in parlors across Britain and beyond.Toxic snow, tinsel, and ornaments: From cotton “snow” that flashed into flame to lead-based tinsel and arsenic-dyed decorations that slowly poisoned anyone who touched or tasted them.Deadly toys and poisoned treats: The rise of arsenic greens, adulterated candies, and tainted puddings, and the chilling real-life stories of children who paid the price for “holiday cheer.”Early electric lights and new kinds of danger: How the “safe” alternative to candles—experimental electric light strings and overloaded wiring—brought shocks, sparks, and fresh fears to the Christmas season. From horror to reform: The fires, poisonings, and public scandals that pushed governments, scientists, and ordinary families toward modern safety standards, consumer protections, and fire codes that still save lives today. This Christmas, as you plug in your UL-listed lights and hang shatterproof ornaments, remember the people who learned these lessons the hardest way possible—and the ghostly echoes of Victorian Christmases that still haunt our holidays. We're telling that story tonight.

We bring facts to the show every morning, and we then have to guess which facts are real and which are fake. We were all in the Christmas spirit this morning so it seemed as every fact followed the same festive feel
On this Thanksgiving episode, Angel reflects on gratitude, family, and the deeper meaning behind the holidays, encouraging listeners to slow down and remember the true heart of Christmas—Jesus, love, and hope. The episode offers practical reminders—phones away, presence over presents—and comfort for those who are weary or missing loved ones, ending with a prayer and an invitation to prepare the heart for the season ahead.

On this episode of the OneHaas Alumni Podcast, learn how alum Liz Castelli went from a middle school science teacher to co-founder and CEO of Tinsel Experiential Design. After planning her own dream wedding, Liz wanted to pivot from education to the events planning space. With the help of her two friends, they launched Tinsel and quickly grew it from a boutique agency to a powerhouse experiential company working with clients like GitHub and Uber. Liz chats with host Sean Li about the evolution of Tinsel, the importance of having a clear vision when it comes to company culture, and why she wanted to pursue an executive MBA at Haas with an already successful business under her belt.*OneHaas Alumni Podcast is a production of Haas School of Business and is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:On Tinsel's early days“ How do brands connect with their audiences? This was sort of the beginning of experiential. And man, we were the redheaded stepchild. It would go through like capital A agency, it would go through create, it would go through digital, you name it, every other entity…And then they'd be like, I think there's $3 for experiential. And now it's wild. It's totally the opposite where everyone is thinking about how does the customer experience the product?”On why she wanted to pursue an executive MBA “ Well, if I'm going to be able to exist as this person who started a company and it is successful, I'd like to feel confident enough in a room of other people who run businesses and know what I'm talking about. And I do know for myself, but I've always done it by learning the hard way or by learning from other people that we've hired. And I think that I wanted to know that what I had done was right.”The surprising lessons she gained at Haas“ That's one of the greatest things that Berkeley gave me. I thought I was coming for the operations. I thought I was coming for the finance, but actually I was coming for politics and power and difficult conversations. And I can think of like 12 different classes where I'm like, oh my God, that's what I came to Berkeley for.”On where she's headed next “ I have always thought of myself more as a builder, then this like visionary, you know, futurist if you will. And so I know that my skillset is around building tinsel into a sustainable model at scale within this holding corporation. That's what I'm excited to do. I'm excited to see the right teams and the right people and things sort of moving in the right direction and taking it from where we were post acquisition, which was still nothing to sniff at, you know. But I think there's just a different level of complexity and growth that's there. And I wanna see it through and I wanna make sure that Tinsel is an entity that will stay on and continue.”Show Links:LinkedIn ProfileTinsel Experiential DesignSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

Ever spend the night in a murder room? Well, at the Oxford Hotel in Denver, you can do just that! Beware solo male travelers. There's a lady here who just may rough you up a bit. The Oxford Hotel is Denver's oldest hotel, so of course there are many more spirits who've taken up permanent residence here. Shadowy figures lurking in the basement, a lady in white, lavender-scented apparitions, spirits at the spirit bar, and even a spectral postman obsessed with delivering presents he never finished. How magical! And speaking of magic, there's nothing more traditional than telling ghost stories around Christmas time, so don't forget to email us your hauntings and ask everyone around you if they see dead people.

Umm, aliens? Hello? It's us, and we think you forgot your cow… This week we are unraveling the hair-raising yet hilarious story of the Rendlesham Forest UFO Incident—aka the UK's Roswell! This episode is packed with mysterious beams of light, high-strung farm animals, and bizarre encounters that left seasoned military officers scratching their heads. We explore the eerie details of the sightings, witness accounts, and the ongoing mysteries surrounding the event, including the psychological impact on those involved and the lack of concrete explanations… aka a lot of us screaming ALIENS! We dabble with the skepticism surrounding the events, but really, we are here to present some theories. Some may call them conspiracy theories… alien glyphs, ancient Egyptians, and a farmer who has a lady's scream. This topic has us scratching our heads and Sabrina dumbfounded as to why she still hasn't made contact. Oh well, I guess the aliens dropped the cow on this one (if you know you know).
