Wisconsin farms feature a lot of different crops and animals, but despite our diversity - it doesn't normally include reindeer. Reindeer, otherwise known as caribou, take center stage for a lot of stories during the holiday season. Ben Jarboe takes a fun adventure to find out more about what reindeer eat and need before their grand flight. He gets the details from Jeff Phillips, owner of Reindeer Games in Erin, Wisconsin. Phillips explains how the animals nutritional needs change from winter to summer, and how adapt they are to fit their conditions. Winds have started to pick up around Wisconsin and that will be the story today. Stu Muck says wind chills will be part of the conversation today with improving temperatures into next week. There's a lot of conversations happening about buy local and knowing your farmer. The Wisconsin Farmers Union committed to incorporating locally produced ingredients in their convention menu this year. Not an easy feat! Stephanie Hoff talks to Layne Cozzolino, director of special projects with the Wisconsin Farmers Union. The organization chose to "put their money where their mouth is" by reinvesting their convention budget directly into the hands of the family farmers they represent. For its 95th annual convention, one Wisconsin organization decided to transform the standard hotel meal into a direct investment in its own membership. They fed 280 attendees seven meals each. The event successfully sourced 70 local ingredients from 40 farmer members. Rather than asking the hotel to change its entire menu, organizers worked with Chula Vista’s chefs to swap local ingredients—like beef, eggs, and cheese—into the resort’s existing recipes to make the transition easier for the kitchen staff. By using "procurement partners" (such as Organic Valley and the Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative), the organization was able to aggregate products from many small farms into fewer deliveries, making large-scale local sourcing more efficient. Despite the convention taking place in December, the meals featured a wide variety of local products, including storage crops (potatoes and garlic), frozen roasted vegetables, legumes, mushrooms, and diverse dairy products. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "Reindeer Games" (2000), a late-90s/early-2000s crime thriller that lands squarely in the “fine, but flawed” category.Both Butler and Field agree the movie is watchable, but just barely. The plot quickly starts to unravel, relying on Ben Affleck's character, Rudy and our villain, played by Gary Sinise, to make a series of frustratingly dumb decisions. The central twist involving the true mastermind only makes things worse, hinging on an absurd amount of coincidence and lucky timing to work at all.That said, the performances help keep the film afloat, and the sheer ridiculousness of the story becomes part of its charm. The noir-inspired style, snowy setting, and hard-boiled attitude actually work in the film's favor, giving it a vibe that's more enjoyable than the script probably deserves.So while "Reindeer Games" never quite comes together as a smart thriller, it remains a curious, messy entry from its era that's easy enough to watch if your expectations are set appropriately.What's your favorite holiday action/thriller (that isn't "Die Hard")? “Making Merry with Andrew and Greg”The goal of this episode was to make merry. And who to help us do that but Andrew Gumm and Greg Henninger. I hired them both as teaching artists for children's theater back in the day, and they went to college with Shaun. Our connections run deep. Even if I haven't seen or talked to them in a while, all bets are off when we connect, and it's like no time has gone by. I cherish them both. To make more merry, they were quizzed on some Christmas movie quotes, and then some questions around Christmas.We actually ran out of time. Maybe you could tell we could have kept going for many hours to come. Hopefully you are as entertained as we clearly were. Whether we're talking about the merits, or lack of them for My Favorite Things as a Christmas song, or whether The Twelve Days of Christmas has too many birds, we covered as much as we could. Christopher Walken adds a sinister element as the businessman Max Shreck.Tim Burton's vision partnered with Danny Elfman's haunting score creates a mesmerizing Christmas classic set in Gotham City.The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) lives a quiet life as a schoolteacher until a car crash triggers memories of her past life as a deadly government assassin.Samantha hires private detective Mitch Hennessey (Samuel L. Jackson) to help her uncover her past and together they set out to find the truth. Their adventure is full of gunfights, treachery, and some of the best buddy-dynamic chemistry of the '90s. Davis transforms from warm suburban mom to hard-boiled operative with shocking believability and Jackson delivers one of his funniest, most charismatic roles.Written by Shane Black and directed by Renny Harlin, The Long Kiss Goodnight mixes holiday atmosphere with espionage to create one of the 90's most underrated action movies.Lethal Weapon (1987)Lethal Weapon redefined the buddy-cop genre and set the standard for all future buddy-cop movies. Set at Christmastime in Los Angeles, the movie pairs veteran detective Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) with newcomer Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson). Their investigation into a young woman's suspicious death spirals into a violent clash with drug traffickers and the psychotic Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey).Lethal Weapon is full of heart, which is what you want in a Christmas movie. Riggs who is spiraling out of control from grief and Murtaugh, a grounded family man, form a bond that is convincing from start to finish. Also written by Shane Black, Hollywood's king of Christmas action movies and directed by Richard Donner, Lethal Weapon blends holiday themes with explosive action, dark humor, and iconic one-liners. She has a lot on her plate preparing for the Christmas festival and keeps adding things to her to-do list. She gets a call from a mob-boss-level intense banker who insists she come see him today. We find out why when we see him staring at the ranch's current balance… it's bad. It's NEGATIVE $1,038.A guy named John calls—again—to try to convince her to sell the ranch. She's not interested. So he decides he's just going to come stay at the ranch anyway.She goes to meet with the banker. It's not good. There's been some shady money stuff involving someone named Sandra Flowers, and Carrie has until 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve to come up with $15,000. That's only 48 hours. Not great!She calls an all-hands meeting and breaks the bad news: no bonuses… and probably much worse. They all get to work trying to figure out a way to save the Christmas ranch.John keeps trying to talk to her about his offer, but she's not budging. He's like, “I can tell how much you love this place. What if I fund building a bigger lodge and you still run it?” He believes there's huge potential for growth. Carrie is like, “I don't totally disagree… but still no deal.”John does a little snooping and discovers the truth—they're really struggling and owe 15k. We also find out that it was the banker who told John about the ranch in the first place, promising him a great deal if Carrie can't make the money.But John genuinely wants things to work out for Carrie because he wants her to stay and run the inn.Carrie ends up raising the money. It's looking great. She brings it to the banker and he's like, “Well, it's a start… You ran out so fast that you missed the part where I said you actually owe $50k.” So that's… devastating.Carrie decides she just wants to enjoy the festival and have some fun. She and John compete in the Reindeer Games together and WIN big time.Everything's looking up—until she catches John talking to the banker and gets furious. “YOU KNEW!”John's excited to hear she's doing an auction—maybe this will save the ranch! But… it's not actually a fundraiser for the ranch. It's for charity.But guess who shows up… SANDRA FLOWERS. She explains she took the money to help her brother get surgery. In fact, the banker told her he'd pay for the surgery if she stopped paying the mortgage and emptied the bank account. The banker pops in with a “YOU LIE!”The final auction item is a cake—and that money actually goes toward the ranch. It's looking like they'll only get about $300… until John pipes up and bids $50,000.He says he wants to stay at the ranch and call it home—with her. And they kissssss. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss John Frankenheimer, a true expert of the craft and a man who could make any kind of film. Our B-Sides today include Prophecy, 52 Pick-Up, Dead Bang, and the HBO Film Against the Wall (for which Frankenheimer won an Emmy!) Our guest today is the great Blake Howard of One Heat Minute Productions. He's just wrapping up his podcast series Romin, in which Blake discusses Frankenheimer's late-period action masterpiece (and certified A-Side) Ronin with incredible film minds (and also two schlubs from The Film Stage). In this episode, I tell a fairly interesting first-hand story about original Ronin screenwriter J.D. Zeik! The superb interview book John Frankenheimer: A Conversation With Charles Champlin is referenced quite a bit throughout, as is this interview with Ben Affleck (which includes a funny memory of the temperamental Frankenheimer on the set of Reindeer Games). Frankenheimer's BMW Films short with Clive Owen comes up, as does underrated character actor Tim Reid. We admire the nastiness of 52 Pick-Up, the way that Against the Wall looks, and the ambitions of Prophecy, failed though they may be. Then there's Dead Bang, a deeply troubled production with a supremely strange William Forsythe performance. Additionally, Frankenheimer made his bones in live television, specifically being the lead director of Playhouse 90. One episode we talk about a bit is “Forbidden Area.”

She gets a call from her sister, who accuses her of avoiding their mom. Lucy isn't planning on going home for Christmas, but her mom tells her she's going to get her room ready, just in case. Her sister, Alexa, says she sent her a box of some random stuff—framed photos, including one from the first Christmas after their dad died. Alexa asks her one more time to please come home for Christmas. Lucy says she'll think about it. And she goes to think about it by playing pool with her assistant, but all she really wants to do is WORK!!!After a long day, she goes across the street to a diner. Right as she's about to go to town on some pancakes, a guy named Matt comes up to her and says, “LUCY?!?!” He sits down, and they catch up. They were friends in high school, and she gets an update on everything—from his failing Broadway career to his failing marriage. He asks if she's coming home for Christmas, and she says, “Oh no, I haven't been home in years.” He responds, “Same ol' Lucy.” She's like, “WTF does that mean?” He says, “Oh, you avoid the people who are closest to you, including me. I thought you knew that.” He asks if she ever thinks about what could have been had things turned out differently. She says, “No, I've literally never done that…YET!”After he leaves, a nosy waitress sits down and asks Lucy if she could do her life over again, would she? Lucy replies, “Nah, hard pass.” But as Lucy starts to look around the diner, she notices that everyone is with someone else but her. So, she looks up Matt on social media and accidentally likes an old picture. Her life is essentially over!She calls an Uber, and guess who the Uber driver is? NOSEY WAITRESS! The steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car, and Lucy's phone is set to military time… and that's just kind of the way things go sometimes.Lucy falls asleep in the backseat, and as they go over a bridge, her phone begins to glitch out. Suddenly, she's home. Not her current home, but her childhood home. In the moment of frenzy, she forgets her phone in the car.She goes inside and sees a dog that looks just like her childhood dog but thinks they must've just gotten the same breed. But when she wakes up the next day to “Kiss Me,” she knows something is off. She is fine without her glasses and has bangs… she runs outside to grab the paper… it's December of 1999!Her driver is out there and explains the rules: This is a Christmas gift for her, but she can't change anything or it will change her future. Enjoy 1999!She goes inside and sees her mom baking and realizes how much she missed that. She goes outside and runs into Matt, who is her boyfriend, and he tells her, “I'll see you tonight for the thing.” She has no idea what he's talking about, so she goes to talk to her old best friend, Nadine, who is also a sci-fi fan, and just tells her the truth. She convinces Nadine she's from the future, and Nadine is 100% on board for helping Lucy figure out why she's back. She thinks it's because she botched her first kiss with Matt. So Nadine encourages her to go kiss him ASAP!Lucy realizes that she might be sharing too much about the future when the letterhead of her partner letter goes away.So she goes to meet up with Matt and immediately kisses him, and more letterhead disappears. Her driver shows up and tells her to just relive the memories; don't try to change anything.And nothing says relive the memories like THE REINDEER GAMES! They win, ‘cause duh.Lucy realizes she's having an absolute blast with Matt, and it's causing more of her letter to disappear.She goes home and is shocked when her grandparents show up—she hasn't seen them in a long time and gets a little misty-eyed. Her grandparents warn her and her sister to prep for Y2K.Lucy goes to check on her mom, who is working like crazy in the kitchen, and she has to sit down. Lucy gives her mother great advice and lets her know that they're all in it together and grief isn't going to pass in a day. This causes more of her letter to vanish.Lucy keeps having heavy-hitting conversations one after another. When she sees her sister is struggling too, she goes and tells her that she knows she's into girls. She tells her to come out when she's ready, but her mom will be her biggest supporter. She apologizes for not being there for her when she needed her the most but tells her that she's proud of her. Naturally, this causes more of her letter to disappear. She goes to hang out with Matt, and they almost kiss again, but they don't. She sees that her letter is almost gone entirely.So she goes to talk to the driver and tells her that she wants to make sure she goes back to her life as it was—and she finds out that she just has to make it to Christmas Eve.She goes to see Matt in a play and quickly realizes why he didn't make it as an actor. He runs to meet up with her after the play and tells her that he really wants to make things work with her but can sense her pulling away.She goes to do what she always would do when she needed to think—she plays some pool with her grandpa. She asks if he would change anything about his life, and he says no—everything he's done, including the mistakes, has led to this moment right now. He wouldn't want to miss out on that.Lucy realizes she doesn't want to go back to her old life. She rushes to bring a mix CD to Matt and tells him that she loves him and wants to be with him forever. They kiss, and her entire new life flashes before her eyes—college, weddings, kids, Matt's surprisingly successful acting career. Suddenly, Lucy breaks the kiss and has her glasses back. She's back in the present, but everything is better than Lucy could have imagined—she's really with Matt! She's now an estate attorney. And she's so happy.As she's about to walk into her mom's house, she looks out and sees her driver, and she says THANK YOU!!!
