In 2018, a man checked into a room at New York hotel for a one-night stay. Remarkably, he used the room for five years without paying another cent—exploiting obscure rent laws to hold on to it. His refusal to leave, however, eventually led to potential prison time for him. Like an unwelcome tenant who overstays, James warns us that the devil lingers in our lives when left unchecked. “Resist the devil,” James writes, “and he will flee from you” (4:7). The apostle emphasizes that our struggles often come from impure “desires” and “wrong motives” (vv. 1, 3)—things like pride, divided loyalties, and impure thoughts residing in our hearts. To counter such temptation, James offers two commands: “submit . . . to God” and “resist the devil” (v. 7). To submit means surrendering every part of our lives to God. Resisting the devil is equally active, requiring prayer, vigilance, and the wisdom of Scripture. Like a landlord evicting an unlawful tenant, in God’s strength we can refuse to let the temptation of the devil overtake us. As we resist him, God promises victory as James asserts: “He will flee from you” (v. 7). When we evict sin and the devil’s influence and “come near to God” (v. 8), we allow His peace, joy, and purpose to dwell more fully in us. The enemy can’t stay where God reigns!
Today on the Pseudoarchaeology Podcast, we pit The Odyssey against Treasure Planet in a movie match up to the death! Why these two disparate films (besides the vague pseudoarchaeological vibes inherent in both)? Because my daughter said she likes Treasure Planet better than The Odyssey. She might be right. Sunday August 2, 2026: What if the greatest work of the Holy Spirit isn't simply empowering us for ministry, but bringing every part of our lives under the joyful reign of King Jesus? In Week Two of The Lordship of the Spirit, Pastor Matt explores what it means to live beneath Heaven's government in the ordinary moments of life. Through the life of Jesus, this message reveals that true freedom is found not in self-rule, but in surrender to the loving lordship of Christ made real through Holy Spirit. This teaching will challenge the way you think about dependence, anxiety, the Kingdom of God, and what it truly means to live by the Spirit. More than behavior modification, the Holy Spirit is restoring us to the life we were always created for—a life governed by the goodness of the Father and marked by righteousness, peace, and joy.
Because our sovereign God reigns over all creation, believers can surrender their lives to Him, trust His promises without fear, and rest in the assurance that His purposes cannot be defeated. God is sovereign. Because He reigns over everything, believers can live with faith instead of fear. Bro. Matthew explains that God's sovereignty means He possesses absolute authority, unlimited power, and complete ownership over all creation. Unlike every created being, God depends on nothing outside Himself for existence—He has always been and always will be. God reigns over all creation. Nothing surprises God. God's sovereignty gives believers peace. Faith trusts God's promises before circumstances change. Jesus' resurrection guarantees God's victory. Everything belongs to God. Salvation clothes believers in Christ's righteousness. God desires a relationship built on freely chosen love. True peace comes through surrendering your will to God's.

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we continue our tour through Psalms 73–80, where the psalmists wrestle with one of life's hardest questions: Why do the wicked seem to prosper while God's people suffer? Again and again, these psalms remind us to shift our perspective and remember one unchanging truth—God is still King.We begin with Psalm 73, where the psalmist honestly struggles with envy and discouragement before declaring, "But God..." We explore how God's presence becomes our true strength and examine connections between this psalm and the New Testament, including Jesus' words about the "pure in heart" and Paul's language of those who were once "far off" but have been brought near.As we move through Psalms 74–76, we see God revealed as the righteous Judge of both Israel and the nations. Though evil may seem to triumph for a season, these psalms proclaim that God will judge wickedness, remain faithful to His covenant, and ultimately receive worship from all peoples. Along the way, we notice recurring images of shepherds and sheep, reminding us that God continually cares for and leads His people.Psalms 77–80 repeatedly look back to Israel's history, especially the Exodus, to remind God's people of His faithfulness in the past. Even in seasons of doubt, when it feels as though God has forgotten His chesed—His steadfast covenant love—the psalmists choose to remember His mighty acts. We also discover why knowing the stories of Genesis through Samuel enriches our understanding of these songs, as the psalmists continually draw from Israel's history to strengthen hope in the present. Finally, Psalm 78 challenges every generation to pass on the story of God's faithfulness. Parents are called to teach their children God's works and His instruction so that the next generation will place its hope in Him. The section concludes with Psalm 80, where Israel is pictured as God's carefully tended vine and the people cry out for a faithful leader—a hope that ultimately points us forward to the coming Son of Man.Throughout these psalms, we see a consistent message: when life is confusing and evil seems to prevail, God's people remember who He is, what He has done, and confidently place their hope in the God who remains in control. If you want the FREE hand outs that go along with this series, sign up for our newsletter at our website.
